The period of the "second slavery" was marked by geographic expansion of zones of slavery into the Upper US South, Cuba, and Brazil and chronological expansion into the industrial age. As The Reinvention of Atlantic Slavery: Technology, Labor, Race, and Capitalism in the Greater Caribbean (Oxford UP, 2020) shows, ambitious planters throughout the Greater Caribbean hired a transnational group of chemists, engineers, and other "plantation experts" to assist them in adapting industrial technologies to suit their "tropical" needs and increase profitability. Not only were technologies reinvented so as to keep manufacturing processes local but slaveholders' adaptation of new racial ideologies also shaped their particular usage of new machines. Finally, these businessmen forged a new set of relationships with one another in order to sidestep the financial dominance of Great Britain and the northeastern United States. In addition to promoting new forms of mechanization, the technical experts depended on the know-how of slaves alongside whom they worked. Bondspeople with industrial craft skills played key roles in the development of new production processes and technologies like sugar mills. While the very existence of such skilled slaves contradicted prevailing racial ideologies and allowed black people to wield power in their own interest, their contributions grew the slave economies of Cuba, Brazil, and the Upper South. Together reform-minded planters, technical experts, and enslaved people modernized sugar plantations in Louisiana and Cuba; brought together rural Virginia wheat planters and industrial flour-millers in Richmond with the coffee-planting system of southeastern Brazil; and enabled engineers and iron-makers in Virginia to collaborate with railroad and sugar entrepreneurs in Cuba. Through his examination of the creation of these industrial bodies of knowledge, Daniel B. Rood demonstrates the deepening dependence of the Atlantic economy on forced labor after a few revolutionary decades in which it seemed the institution of slavery might be destroyed. The reinvention of this plantation world in the 1840s and 1850s brought a renewed movement in the 1860s, especially from enslaved people themselves in the United States and Cuba, to end chattel slavery. Starting in the seventeenth-century Caribbean, enslavers developed the driving system to solve their fundamental problem: how to extract labor from captive workers who had every reason to resist. In this system, enslaved Black drivers were tasked with supervising and punishing other enslaved laborers. In The Driver's Story: Labor and Power in the World of Atlantic Slavery (U Pennsylvania Press, 2024), Randy M. Browne illuminates the predicament and harrowing struggles of these men―and sometimes women―at the heart of the plantation world. Ana Lucia Araujo's book Museums and Atlantic Slavery (Routledge, 2021) explores how slavery, the Atlantic slave trade, and enslaved people are represented through words, visual images, artifacts, and audiovisual materials in museums in Europe and the Americas. Divided into four chapters, the book addresses four recurrent themes: wealth and luxury; victimhood and victimization; resistance and rebellion; and resilience and achievement. Considering the roles of various social actors who have contributed to the introduction of slavery in the museum in the last thirty years, the analysis draws on selected exhibitions, and institutions entirely dedicated to slavery, as well as national, community, plantation, and house museums in the United States, England, France, and Brazil. Engaging with literature from a range of disciplines, including history, anthropology, sociology, art history, tourism and museum studies, Araujo provides an overview of a topic that has not yet been adequately discussed and analysed within the museum studies field. Museums and Atlantic Slavery encourages scholars, students, and museum professionals to critically engage with representations of slavery in museums. This discussion is with Dr. Ana Lucia Araujo, a Professor of History at Howard University in Washington DC. She is a social and cultural historian writing transnational and comparative history, her work explores the history of slavery and the Atlantic slave trade and their present-day legacies, including the long history of demands of reparations for slavery and colonialism. She has a particular interest in the memory, heritage, and visual culture of slavery. Her two recent single-authored books include Slavery in the Age of Memory: Engaging the Past (2020) and Reparations for Slavery and the Slave Trade: A Transnational and Comparative History (2017). She has been a member of the International Scientific Committee of the UNESCO Slave Route Project since 2017. She also serves on the Board of Editors of the American Historical Review, the editorial board of the Journal of Slavery and Abolition, and the editorial review board of the African Studies Review. in this conversation, we discuss her most recent book, Museums and Atlantic Slavery published by Routledge in 2021. Welcome to another episode of the Esoteric Negro!! This week our guest is Dr Peggy Brunache, a Haitian American archaeologist, lecturer, culinary consultant, and foodways specialist. Dr. Brunache grew up in Miami, Florida, and is the daughter of Caribbean immigrant parents from Haiti. Peggy found Anthropology at University, and later went on to earn her masters degree at the University of South Carolina at Columbia after having worked in cultural resource management for almost a decade. She then went on to gain her PhD from the University of Texas, where she focused her thesis on the narratives of enslaved women within Habitation La Mahaudière, Guadeloupe, Caribbean. Dr Brunache now lives in Scotland, and lectures on the History of Atlantic Slavery at the University of Glasgow. She is also a prominent member of the SBA (Society for Black Archaeologists). This was the focus of this week's episode as we discussed the experience of international travel and the cultural differences of dealing with race as a Caribbean-American woman in the U.K. From establishing new roots, to the restriction places upon her as an international travel into her new home country, our conversation with Dr. Brenache was enlightening as it much as it was informative to her unique experience. The main role of organized anti-slavery during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was to both legitimate and reinforce deeply rooted hierarchies which saw European states and their peoples position themselves at the moral and racial apex of ‘civilization'. Centuries of death and destruction associated with Transatlantic slavery firmly dispatched to the past, despite their continuing and catastrophic effects, thereby enabling Europeans to be reborn as abolitionists rather than enslavers. The foundational premise of organized anti-slavery – no one should be enslaved – would come to be primarily understood in terms of paternalistic ‘protection', with ‘civilized' Europeans justifying unprovoked wars of colonial conquest as ‘humanitarian' missions to prevent ‘savage' and ‘backward' peoples in other parts of the globe from enslaving each other. Appeals to moral and religious enlightenment (the ‘civilising mission') and altruistic sacrifice (the ‘white man's burden') proved to be hugely important. By treating their non-European subjects as ‘backward children', who were said to be unable to make decisions for themselves, Europeans were able to both justify and excuse any number of external actions and interventions. Tragically, these actions included countless examples of death, exploitation, extraction, violence and abuse, which exposed the fundamental hollowness of European pretentions towards moral superiority. Slavery would be banished symbolically via legal abolition while many of its defining features continued alongside everyday forms of violence and exploitation. In case after case, governments who congratulated themselves on abolishing slavery would continue to justify and defend numerous acts of violence and coercion directed against ‘inferiors' and ‘outsiders'. Monday, 22 March 2021, 7 – 8:15pm An online lecture as part of the Out of the Ashes Lecture Series, with Professor Ana Lucia Araujo, Howard University, Washington. This lecture examines the history of the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which was destroyed by fire in September 2018. Araujo explores the connections between the museum's building and the formation of its collections associated with the history of the Atlantic slave trade and slavery in Brazil, the country that imported the largest number of enslaved Africans (nearly five million) during the era of the Atlantic slave trade. The museum housed the oldest collection of African artifacts in the country. Several of these artifacts were given as gifts to the Portuguese Prince Regent (who later became king) by the king of Dahomey, in the context of transactions to facilitate the trade in enslaved Africans between Brazil and the West African Kingdom of Dahomey. In the past two decades, the museum, like a few other Brazilian institutions, was investing in reorganizing its exhibitions to bring to light the links between Africa and Brazil, a dimension that until recently remained absent from Brazilian museum institutions. Araujo shows that the destruction of the museum as a result of federal government's neglect reveals a reality that affects many other big and small museums whose collections derive from the country's long history of slavery. The event will also feature a short response to the lecture from Lar Joye, Port Heritage Director at Dublin Port, former Chair of the Irish Blue Shield, and a member of the board of the Irish Museum Association. About the speaker Ana Lucia Araujo is a full Professor of History at the historically black Howard University in Washington DC, United States. She holds a dual PhD in History/Social and Historical Anthropology from Université Laval, Canada, and École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, France (2007) and a PhD in Art History from Université Laval, Canada. (2004). The period of the "second slavery" was marked by geographic expansion of zones of slavery into the Upper US South, Cuba, and Brazil and chronological expansion into the industrial age. As The Reinvention of Atlantic Slavery: Technology, Labor, Race, and Capitalism in the Greater Caribbean (Oxford UP, 2020) shows, ambitious planters throughout the Greater Caribbean hired a transnational group of chemists, engineers, and other "plantation experts" to assist them in adapting industrial technologies to suit their "tropical" needs and increase profitability. Not only were technologies reinvented so as to keep manufacturing processes local but slaveholders' adaptation of new racial ideologies also shaped their particular usage of new machines. Finally, these businessmen forged a new set of relationships with one another in order to sidestep the financial dominance of Great Britain and the northeastern United States. In addition to promoting new forms of mechanization, the technical experts depended on the know-how of slaves alongside whom they worked. Bondspeople with industrial craft skills played key roles in the development of new production processes and technologies like sugar mills. While the very existence of such skilled slaves contradicted prevailing racial ideologies and allowed black people to wield power in their own interest, their contributions grew the slave economies of Cuba, Brazil, and the Upper South. Together reform-minded planters, technical experts, and enslaved people modernized sugar plantations in Louisiana and Cuba; brought together rural Virginia wheat planters and industrial flour-millers in Richmond with the coffee-planting system of southeastern Brazil; and enabled engineers and iron-makers in Virginia to collaborate with railroad and sugar entrepreneurs in Cuba. Through his examination of the creation of these industrial bodies of knowledge, Daniel B. Rood demonstrates the deepening dependence of the Atlantic economy on forced labor after a few revolutionary decades in which it seemed the institution of slavery might be destroyed. The reinvention of this plantation world in the 1840s and 1850s brought a renewed movement in the 1860s, especially from enslaved people themselves in the United States and Cuba, to end chattel slavery. This account of capitalism, technology, and slavery offers new perspectives on the nineteenth-century Americas. The period of the "second slavery" was marked by geographic expansion of zones of slavery into the Upper US South, Cuba, and Brazil and chronological expansion into the industrial age. As The Reinvention of Atlantic Slavery: Technology, Labor, Race, and Capitalism in the Greater Caribbean (Oxford UP, 2020) shows, ambitious planters throughout the Greater Caribbean hired a transnational group of chemists, engineers, and other "plantation experts" to assist them in adapting industrial technologies to suit their "tropical" needs and increase profitability. Not only were technologies reinvented so as to keep manufacturing processes local but slaveholders' adaptation of new racial ideologies also shaped their particular usage of new machines. Finally, these businessmen forged a new set of relationships with one another in order to sidestep the financial dominance of Great Britain and the northeastern United States. In addition to promoting new forms of mechanization, the technical experts depended on the know-how of slaves alongside whom they worked. Bondspeople with industrial craft skills played key roles in the development of new production processes and technologies like sugar mills. While the very existence of such skilled slaves contradicted prevailing racial ideologies and allowed black people to wield power in their own interest, their contributions grew the slave economies of Cuba, Brazil, and the Upper South. Together reform-minded planters, technical experts, and enslaved people modernized sugar plantations in Louisiana and Cuba; brought together rural Virginia wheat planters and industrial flour-millers in Richmond with the coffee-planting system of southeastern Brazil; and enabled engineers and iron-makers in Virginia to collaborate with railroad and sugar entrepreneurs in Cuba. Through his examination of the creation of these industrial bodies of knowledge, Daniel B. Rood demonstrates the deepening dependence of the Atlantic economy on forced labor after a few revolutionary decades in which it seemed the institution of slavery might be destroyed. The reinvention of this plantation world in the 1840s and 1850s brought a renewed movement in the 1860s, especially from enslaved people themselves in the United States and Cuba, to end chattel slavery.
