I recently aired a Tales of the Magic Skagit podcast episode about the life of Laurie Wells, whose parents, Hiram and Alfreda, settled in Mount Vernon in 1877.During the interview a reference was made to “Ridgeway” as the name of the area where the Wells' family home was located. I recalled that the Skagit County Historical Museum's archivist, Mari Anderson Densmore, had written about Ridgeway in her book, “Lost Cities” of Skagit — Rediscovering Places of Our Past, and I wanted to share that bit of our history with you all. So, here is my reading of “Ridgeway” from Mari's book.

In 'Meanwhile', Jacqueline Woodson and Catherine Gund weave together the words of literary legends to explore the intersection of art, grief, and social justice.Description: James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Muhammad Ali and Nina Simone are some of the artists featured in the moving new film “Meanwhile”, from National Book Award-winner Jacqueline Woodson and Emmy-nominated producer & director Catherine Gund. Their meditations on grief, art, breath and more are beautifully woven together as the film poses the question, how do you keep breathing amidst the chaos? Catalyzed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the police killing of George Floyd, Gund and Woodson tap into our shared existence. The artists featured in the docu-poem, with a haunting soundtrack by Meshell Ndegeocello, work through questions of race, political violence, resistance and identity — so much of what shapes our lives and relationships. “This is not a love letter to this country but to us inside this country,” says Woodson in the film. “We see us. We love us. We make eye contact and nod to us”. In this conversation with Laura Flanders, the trio of longtime friends discuss the film from Aubin Pictures, the losses they experienced in the 80s, and how the arts and poetry can compel us to enact change. Can we reclaim the “meanwhile”? All that, plus a commentary from Laura on hers.Guests:•  Catherine Gund: Producer & Director, Meanwhile; Filmmaker & Founder, Aubin Pictures•  Jacqueline Woodson: Writer & Performer, Meanwhile; Author, Brown Girl Dreaming; Founder, Baldwin for the Arts;  The Elders Project, ColumbiaWatch the special report released on YouTube May 16th 5pm ET; PBS World Channel May 18th, and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). Vedran preporučuje knjige: Material World: A Substantial Story of Our Past and Future, Ed Conway (pijesak, sol, bakar, željezo, nafta, litij) The Perfect Weapon: War, Sabotage, and Fear in the Cyber Age, David Sanger (cyber) This Is How They Tell Me The World Ends, Nicole Perlorth (cyber) The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-First Century's Greatest Dilemma, Mustafa Suleyman (o revoluciji u kojoj smo sada) Off Menu: The Secret Science of Food and Dining, Nell McShane Wulfhart (samo Audible, jako zanimljivo za ekipu koja voli klopati) Dosta Adam Granta - Originals, Think Again (broadly, leadership) How the World Really Works: How Science Can Set Us Straight on Our Past, Present and Future, Vaclav Smil (facts, facts, facts :)) Chip War: The Quest to Dominate the World's Most Critical Technology, Chris Miller (a must za svakoga u tehnologiji) Never Finished: Unshackle Your Mind and Win the War Within, David Goggins (možda malo granična, ali jako dobra priča o pomicanju ljudskih granica, iako David Goggins ima jaaaaako puno problema kao osoba) Flying Blind: The 737 MAX Tragedy and the Fall of Boeing, Peter Robison (za napraviti Boeing 737 treba manje od 9 dana, a random fact, izvrsna knjiga o promjeni kulture i utjecaju toga; imam puno tih povezanih s avijacijom, tehnologijom etc, ali ova je nekako poslovno zanimljiva također) Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity, Peter Attia MD, Bill Gifford (najdraža mi knjiga 2023.) The Culture Map, Erin Meyer (za increasingly global way of working, the business book koju mislim da svatko treba imati, poklonio sam ih barem 30 ljudima) A General Theory of Love, Thomas Lewis, Fari Amini (divna, jedina ovdje koja ima veze sa neuroznanoscu, da ne gnjavim previse) Podcasti: Another Podcast, Ben Evans (geek, ultra mega pametan) Prof G pod, Scott Galloway (tu i tamo, uglavnom jer pratim tržista kapitala) Acquired (duboke, duboke price o raznim biznisima, fascinantno - epizode o npr. Our journey began with a shared passion for understanding human behaviour and fostering positive change. Through countless sessions of therapy, coaching, and consulting, we have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of learning to be more self-aware, and understanding how to be more flexible, adaptable, and resilient. In today's society, traditional notions of masculinity are being challenged and redefined. This book emerges as a beacon of insight and guidance, offering a framework for understanding and cultivating a new kind of masculinity—one that is authentic, empathetic, and accountable. Our journey in writing "Making Good Men Great" has been driven by a profound belief that men have the potential to be compassionate, courageous, and connected. This book is not merely a theoretical exploration; it is a practical blueprint for personal growth and societal transformation. Through thought-provoking insights and actionable advice, we aim to empower men to transcend outdated stereotypes and embrace a more inclusive and holistic vision of manhood. We use the metaphor of surfing as central to our narrative. Just as surfers attune themselves to the rhythms of the ocean, men must learn to navigate the ever-changing currents of gender dynamics with grace and adaptability. Masculinity, like the ocean, is vast, dynamic, and ever-shifting. Our hope is to guide men in riding these waves with skill and integrity."Making Good Men Great" addresses the core issues that impact both women and men: patriarchy and its pervasive influence. We explore how patriarchal values—territoriality, hierarchy, acquisition, competition, and combativeness—shape and often distort the male experience. By redefining these values, we can foster a masculinity that is more inclusive, compassionate, and supportive. In this edition, we emphasise four core goals to enhance men's lives:Understand the difference between unhealthy masculinity and being healthyBeing the best man you can be in a relationship with yourself.Being a great man in your relationships with others.Being a great leader in the company of men. These goals are essential for men seeking to navigate the complexities of modern life. We delve into the psychological and social challenges men face today, from mental health struggles to evolving gender roles. By integrating knowledge from various disciplines such as psychology, anthropology, and history, we provide a comprehensive understanding of what it means to be a man in today's world."Making Good Men Great" is more than just a book; it's a call to action. It encourages men to embark on a journey of self-discovery and collective transformation, fostering a world where men are celebrated for their compassion, integrity, and dedication to positive change. As we stand at a cultural crossroads, "Making Good Men Great" offers a guiding light for men aspiring to contribute to a more equitable and compassionate society. As you listen to today's episode, we invite you to reflect on the legacy you want to leave behind. Think about how you can become not just a good man but a great one. **Recorded a day late **  Got to thinking about something, again, as I read my weekly readings from "The Traveler's Gift" by Andy Andrews.  This was the lesson about wisdom.  In the margin of the book, I wrote a comment awhile back that I got to thinking about how not only are our own pasts our best mentors, but so are the pasts of those people that we love.  Since our lives are so connected - what we go through with each other, does indeed connect.  I thought of my wife and kids, my parents, sister, grandparents, etc., our pasts do teach us valuable lessons that we can draw on all throughout life!  I find it powerfully amazing to remember this.  If I do my best today and I pile up a few "wins" of good choices, good actions, etc., that means my yesterdays become better.  This helps me also to have better tomorrows too.  It's all connected more than we know and all we have to do is to pause a little bit to understand the power of this.  I know it's an amazing reminder for me & I hope it is for you too. Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.

In the decades following the Civil War, African Americans reliably voted for the Republican Party, which had led the efforts to outlaw slavery and enfranchise Black voters; and white southerners reliably voted for the Democratic Party. When Black voters started to vote for Democratic candidates in larger numbers, starting with the 1936 re-election of FDR, whose New Deal policies had helped poor African Americans, Republicans began to turn their sights toward white Southern voters. By the 1964 Presidential election, Republican Barry Goldwater was actively courting those voters, winning five states in the deep South, despite his otherwise poor showing nationwide. Republican Richard Nixon successfully refined the strategy in his 1968 defeat of Democrat Hubert Humphrey. In the following decades, the Republican Party continued to employ the Southern Strategy, eventually leading to a complete realignment of the parties. Joining me for a deep dive on the Southern Strategy is Dr. Kevin M. Kruse, Professor of History at Princeton University, author of several books on the political and social history of twentieth-century America, and co-editor with fellow Princeton History Dr. Julian E. Zelizer of Myth America: Historians Take on the Biggest Legends and Lies about Our Past.  Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The episode image is a photograph of Richard Nixon campaigning in 1968; it is in the public domain and available via Wikimedia Commons. The mid-episode audio is the "Go, Go Goldwater" radio jingle produced by Erwin Wasey, Ruthrauff and Ryan, Inc. (EWR & R) from the 1964 presidential campaign; it is widely available on YouTube and is sampled here for educational purpose. Recognizing God As Be Sovereign in Our Past, Our Present, and Our Future : Reflections from Psalm 93 For many of us, it is easy to praise God as sovereign in our lives when it comes to the present or even the future as we trust Him.  But for some of us, it's more difficult to recognize God's sovereignty over our past.  Today we explore this topic and more, I pray it blesses you. Thoughts to Journal: Do you find it difficult to recognize God as sovereign in any of these seasons of your life?  Past, present, or future?  Why is that?  As you sit with this today, spend some time reflecting on God's sovereignty in your life and journal through any thoughts that are keeping you from admitting this fully. Today's Key Verse: Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity. Psalm 93:2   Hey friends, welcome to the Hearing Jesus Podcast.   Do you sometimes doubt if you are truly hearing God's voice or if it's really your own? Do you wonder how you can know the difference? Do you struggle to feel confident in your relationship with God and what He says in his word? Do you sometimes feel stagnant or like you hit a wall in your spiritual life?   Hey, I'm your host, Rachael Groll: missionary, author, pastor, and life coach. And I have been there. I, too, was doubting God's voice in my own life. I, too, felt insecure about the things I thought God might be calling me to do. I wanted to make a difference in the world and be obedient to what God was calling me to do, but I wasn't quite sure how to figure out what exactly that was. I kept telling myself that I was wasting time trying to figure it out or waiting for Him to show me. Or that I wasn't qualified to do the things I thought He might be telling me to do.   The answer for me was found in the pages of the Bible, as I learned how to understand what it was actually saying. If you are ready to grow in your faith and to step confidently into the calling God has for you, then join me as we dig deep into God's word so you can learn to live out your faith in your everyday life.   Friend, you are loved, you are cherished, and you are His.   The Hearing Jesus Podcast will encourage and equip you to step into the calling God has for your life, living out your faith in the everyday. Together we will break down walls that keep us from growing spiritually. We will dig deep into our Bibles to understand and connect the Scriptures to our lives. We will boldly obey what God calls us to do, walking through doors that only He can open.   Join me for your daily dose of faith, honesty, and prayer.   Need to chat one on one? Women often deal with feelings of insecurity and unworthiness, yet the lives of these women show that Jesus values us, wants a relationship with us, and can use us to further His kingdom. In her warm, conversational style, Rachael ties together her life experience, knowledge of the Scriptures, and her compassion for women to encourage us and enable us to become the women God has called us to be.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“What I'm positing is, is an ability to grapple with contradiction. So that's the paradox mindset that Wendy Smith, Maryanne Lewis and other scholars have shown that when we're able to sit with two conflicting things in our minds, for example that if we stick with the example in South Africa, it may be true that if I'm a student that my parents and my grandparents participated in actively supported apartheid and that they were also wonderful parents and grandparents, right? Like those two things can be true, and being able to sit with that contradiction gives me. Like emotional limberness to kind of, you know, push my way through the, the emotional slog of this is awful. This is awful. And to sit with terrible things happened, that's the only way you can do it.” So says Dolly Chugh, award-winning social psychologist at the NYU Stern School of Business, where she is an expert researcher in the psychology of people and goodness. Her first book is the wonderful, The Person You Mean to Be and she just released a second, called, A More Just Future: Psychological Tools for Reckoning with Our Past and Driving Social Change. Both books serve as inspiring, yet practical guides for those of us who seek to be better. A More Just Future builds on Chugh's first book, which equipped readers with the tools to be “good-ish” people who stand up for their values. In her latest, she offers a guide to reckoning with the whitewashed history of our country in order to build a better future.  The seeds of today's inequalities were sown in the past, she tells us, and it will take an extra dose of resilience and grit to grapple with the truth of our history and to make the systemic changes needed to mend the fabric of our country. Moving from willful ignorance to willful awareness isn't easy, leading to uncomfortable feelings of shame, guilt, disbelief, and resistance when we encounter revelations that run against what we have long been told. But it is possible to love your country with a broken heart, she says, imploring us to grapple with contradiction, employing the paradox mindset as we shift from the rigidness of “either/or” to the nuance of “both/and.”  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Wired for consistency… Light vs. heat-based change… Sitting in paradox… Belief grief… MORE FROM DOLLY CHUGH: A More Just Future: Psychological Tools for Reckoning with Our Past and Driving Social Change The Person You Mean to Be: How Good People Fight Bias “How to let go of being a "good" person—and become a better person,” TED Talk Check out Dolly's Website Follow her on Twitter and Instagram “The Truth About Rosa Parks And Why It Matters To Your Diversity Initiative,” Forbes To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices.
