In Part 1 of Season 11, Episode 49, I'm joined by two remarkable women: Suzy Whaley, the first female President of the PGA of America and now President of Golf Nation, and Missie Berteotti, one of Western Pennsylvania's top instructors and players plus LPGA Tour legend. Suzy Whaley is one of the most knowledgeable and gracious individuals you'll ever meet. She made history as the first woman to qualify (not through a sponsor's exemption) to play in a PGA Tour event since Babe Didrikson-Zaharias did it in 1945. Suzy was also the first female President of the PGA of America and now serves as the President of the exciting new golf platform, Golf Nation. In our conversation, Suzy shares her insights on the recent Solheim Cup, a thrilling victory for Team USA. We discuss the possibility of creating a Presidents Cup-style event for women, giving international players a stage to showcase their talents. Suzy also reflects on Nelly Korda's phenomenal season, the sometimes negative focus of media, and the innovative work happening at Golf Nation. Missie Berteotti is one of Western Pennsylvania's greatest golfers. She helped the University of Miami win a national championship and secured her first LPGA Tour victory at the 1993 Ping/Welch's Championship, defeating Dottie Mochrie in an epic battle that went to the 5th playoff hole. Today, Missie is a leading instructor in the game. Missie and I talk about a recent charity event where she teed it up alongside Steelers legend John Banaszak, and she shares her experience of going head-to-head with Mochrie to capture her first Tour win. We also chat about some of her favorite golf courses in the Pittsburgh area.to play.

She would be remarked as the first lesbian gold medalist in Olympic athletes but this she never confirmed for sure while alive.....

Born in 1911, Mildred Ella Didrikson Zaharias, who went by the nickname “Babe,” was a phenomenal, and confident athlete. Babe won Olympic gold in track and field, was an All American player in basketball, pitched in exhibition games in Major League Baseball, and won 17 straight women's amateur golf tournaments, before turning pro and co-founding the LPGA.In a society that didn't welcome women like Babe, she nonetheless forged her own path and won the hearts of fans along the way. I'm joined in this episode by History Professor Dr. Corye Perez Beene, author of the biweekly newsletter Awesome American Sports, who makes the case that Babe was the greatest American athlete who has ever lived. The 1978 CWSA Honda Cup Winner, Ann Meyers, and her ten brothers and sisters received parental support and encouragement in their sport growing up, and equally so, which was not always the case in the 60’s. Since no female sports were available on TV,  Ann’s dreams were carved from reading a book on Babe Didrikson Zaharias, an American athlete who excelled in golf, basketball, baseball and track and field. She later watched Wilma Rudolf and others in the Olympic Games and set her sights on becoming an Olympian. The values her parents taught her such as discipline, accountability and competition were lessons she also learned and practiced in the sports she played in high school and college.  Her basketball prowess opened doors to the rest of her life. First a college scholarship at UCLA where she was a four-time All American, led the Bruins to a national championship and selected the 1978 Broderick Cup winner (later known as the Honda Cup).  Ann played internationally and professionally and was only female to try out with an NBA team. She speaks to her career both in broadcasting and serving as general manager for a WNBA team. Ann believes women should not stay silent and is proud of the current messaging of the WNBA players. She is grateful for those who came before her and takes issue with the fact that their stories prior to NCAA competition have largely been ignored—she is a veritable history book as she reminds us of the early greats. Title IX meant the world to Ann and means so much to girls today. She handled multiple of responsibilities because she knew that education was important and she had to get a degree. Ann believes recognition, then and now, is important, be it in the media or with the Honda Cup. Host: Chris Voelz, CWSA Executive Director Podcast length: 39 mins. A co-production with the CWSA. What an honor to welcome two-time Pulitzer prize winning New York Times investigative journalist Don Van Natta Jr. to WRKO’s Pundit Review Radio. Don’s has written an amazing book about the best women athlete of 20th century, Babe Didrikson Zaharias. One thing that fascinates me about stories like this is how someone so famous can be so unknown a few generations later. There were so many aspects of Babe’s life that are completely relevant to today’s athletics. It’s all here, the money chase, the ego, the push and pull between amateur and professional athletics, using and being used by media, great successes and personal tragedies. In so many ways Babe was a modern athlete, brash, cocky and outspoken. She was the original trash talker and self promoter. You could say she was the first Chad Ochocinco, right down to referring to herself in the third person. Her story is incredible, her athletic feats even greater. Don has written an amazing book. I loved reading it and I hope that came across in the interview. The Pundit Review Radio Podcast RSS feed can be found here and you can find us on iTunes at Pundit Review Radio. My older daughter is twelve years old. Like many girls her age, she has spent countless hours on the soccer field. She has played volleyball and run cross-country at her school. She was the catcher for her Little League baseball team. Now she is taking up fencing. My daughter is not athletically gifted nor in any way competitive, but she takes the opportunity to play sports–any sport. It’s fun, she says simply. My daughter lives in a world that Babe Didrikson Zaharias helped to create. Later this week, June 26, 2011, will mark the 100th anniversary of Babe’s birth. Hopefully, the occasion will bring renewed and deserved attention to a woman who ranks near the top of any list of the greatest athletes of the 20th century. Although she died young, still in the midst of her career as a professional golfer, Babe’s accomplishments in sports were unrivaled. Some will never be topped, such as single-handedly claiming the team title in the 1932 national women’s track championships or winning 14 golf tournaments in a row. But far more than a natural athlete of astonishing, all-around talent, she was a woman determined to make a life in sports. In pursuing this goal, she was ahead of her time. In accomplishing it, she became one of the most influential figures in the history of American sports. Babe was also a colorful and complicated figure, and the fullness of her personality–the talent, the drive, the spark, and the conceit–is revealed in the new biography by Don Van Natta, Jr., Wonder Girl: The Magnificent Sporting Life of Babe Didrikson Zaharias (Little, Brown, 2011), winner of the 2011 USGA Herbert Warren Wind Book Award. A long-time correspondent with the New York Times and three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his journalist work, Don brings his talents as a writer to a story that is, at turns, exciting and poignant, inspiring and funny. Don’s biography of Babe is a masterly portrait of an extraordinary woman: a book that our sports-playing daughters–and sons–should read. Learn more about your ad choices.
