In Part 2 of Episode 56, I'm thrilled to welcome Jenn Whaley, who's making her Next on the Tee debut. If her last name sounds familiar, it should—she's the daughter of Suzy Whaley, former President of the PGA of America and now President of Golf Nation. Suzy has been a wonderful friend of the show, and she's raised an equally wonderful daughter in Jenn. Jenn's passion for the game and her work with Top Golf and Callaway Brands comes shining through the energy in her voice. We chat about what it was like growing up in a true golf family and the golf lessons that happened at the dinner table. Jenn also shares highlights from her remarkable college golf career at Quinnipiac in Connecticut, along with her current role leading a program aimed at getting more beginners into the game and helping them stay engaged with it. Check out how she and the Top Golf are doing online at www.shop.topgolf.com. We'll round Part 2 with former Michigan State, Atlanta Falcons, and Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Mitch Lyons. Mitch helped Michigan State achieve some fantastic victories, including a win over #1-ranked Michigan at The Big House—a story he'll share with us. He'll also recall the day he set the Michigan State record for catches by a tight end. We discuss his experiences playing for an incredible array of coaches, from George Perles to Jerry Glanville, June Jones, and Bill Cowher. Naturally, we spend a good portion of the conversation on his time with the Steelers, where he reflects on what it was like to play for “The Chin,” and how special it is to play for the Rooney Family versus any other organization. Mitch is also a golfer and joins us from Arizona, where he's set to play in the Pro-Am before the Schwab Cup playoffs on the Champions Tour. Mitch is now in the financial management business. Suzy Whaley (T: @suzywhaley, I: mammawhales, FB: @suzypgapresident) has been successful at everything she’s ever done. In additional to being the President of the PGA of America (and the first female President ever!), she is also the current PGA Director of Instruction at the Country Club of Mirasol in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida as well as the PGA Director of Instruction for Suzy Whaley Golf. Her career is long and distinguished. After playing for the University of North Carolina women’s golf team she quickly moved on to become a member of the LPGA Tour in the early 1990’s. When that didn’t work out, she worked with the Jim Flick Golf Schools before becoming a Head Golf Professional at Blue Fox Run in Avon, Connecticut. She transitioned back into coaching & instruction and has received many awards along the way; 10x Golf Digest State Teacher of the Year, 2x Connecticut Teacher of the Year, LPGA Top 50 Instructor, Golf Digest Top 50, GOLF’s ‘Top 100 Coaches in America’ plus many more. During her career she somehow managed to juggle raising a family, run a golf business and still play competitively. In 2003 she played so well she qualified for the PGA Tour’s Greater Hartford Open, becoming the first female to play in a PGA Tour event in more than 50 years. After that she maintained her fine play by winning numerous local, state, and regional events, competed in the 2002 & 2005 PGA Professional Championship’s and to top it off, her and her husband, Bill, have raised two great girls that are both fantastic golfers. How does she continue being so successful and where does she find the time to do it all? In this episode we discuss that, how she views herself as a role model being the first female officer and President of the PGA and a lot more.

In many ways Suzy Whaley is just another Golf Professional. She struggles with many of the same challenges that PGA Professionals face every day. Parts of her story sound the same as many, many others. But on the other hand….Suzy is the head of the largest organization in sports, and not to mention, the first woman to ever do that. She holds one of the most powerful and influential positions in the game of golf. She’s a trail blazer. Not only has she played in LPGA tour events, but she played in a PGA Tour event. She’s probably done more media interviews than any PGA Professional in history. In part one of our conversation, we tackle a couple of age old issues with PGA Professionals. Time management and work-life balance. If you’ve been following along, you’ve heard about these topics on this podcast before. Partly because these issues are nearly universal in our business. And because they’re probably not addressed with practical solutions often enough. So what do you do if you get 600 emails a day? How do you handle the stresses of raising a family and succeeding in this industry? Suzy shares her methods and what’s helped her over the course of her career along with plenty of other great insights.

Jordan Spieth wins at the Australian Open by six strokes. Rich B competed in the North Florida PGA North Central Bonus Event Country Club of Orlando a field of 26. Rich B tied for 5th place. Bob Harig, ESPN.com, calls in to talk about the Hero World Challenge and Tiger's return to golf. Bob and Holly and talk about the new look of Tiger. He has a new teacher, Chris Como, that has a viewpoint that you should play golf but avoid injury. His swing looks different and he has a different posture when he swings. Bob said that Tiger looked pretty comfortable at the Pro-Am today and only missed a couple of greens all day. Rich points out that this is a home event for Tiger and he really knows the course after living at Isleworth for about 15 years. Bob said that it is really no advantage if you are familiar with the course if you are not playing well. Holly asks Bob about Tiger's new swing consultant Como. Bob says that the difference between Como and Foley that Como is not as into the Trackman numbers as much as Foley was. Some were of the thought that Tiger was too much into the Trackman numbers so it might be good since he knows about all of that, to tuck it away and move on. Both Como and Foley are big on Bio-mechanics and Bob Harig stressed that bio-mechanics equals injury avoidance, which everyone especially Tiger can benefit from. He couldn't do any more of what Foley was advocating, he felt that it wasn't working for him any longer. It was a very amicable split. Tiger felt he needed to make a change. Bob pointed out that with Tiger's back injury made it probably very hard for Tiger to work on his short game during that time and develop a bad habit. Holly asks Bob about Jordan Spieth's victory at the Australian Open and how he won with very consistent putting. Bob said that the Aussie Open is a good one for Spieth to win after playing so well all year. Spieth made a long journey home after the Aussie Open and endured a 16-hour time change to compete at the Hero World Challenge. Bob said that he likes Jordan Spieth to win the Hero World Challenge and Spieth's hot hand. Holly said that she was able to travel to Naples and watch the CME Race to the Globe and watch Lydia Ko win the Inaugural Race to the CME Globe. Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, calls in to talk to Holly G and the 2014 LPGA season and Lydia Ko's incredible win at the CME Tour Championship. Steve and Holly talk about Mike Whan's success with the LPGA. Steve said that the marketing was great but if he didn't have a great product like he had this year it wouldn't mattered. Steve talks about most of the players who win on the LPGA are college grad age so why not go to college and get that great experience. Holly mentions that there are now 32 LPGA events in the upcoming 2015 season. Todd Lewis, Golf Channel, calls in from the Hero World Challenge to wrap up the hour of intelligent golf talk. Todd was at the Turkish Airline Open and the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai the final two events of the European Tour season. Brooks Koepka, Florida State grad, picked up his first professional win at the Turkish Open. Holly asks Todd about Jordan Spieth and his win at the Australian Open at the young age of 21. Holly talks to Todd briefly about the PGA of America voted in Suzy Whaley as the Secretary of the PGA. The Golf Channel celebrates 20 years in 2015 and there will be a big celebration at the PGA Merchandise Show.Todd said that he loves working at the Golf Channel and that everyone at the Golf Channel wants to help grow the game.
