This year has seen an explosion of film and TV releases – as sound stages fill with productions, following the end of lockdowns that threatened the industry. But if you're like us, this summer you might just be taking a breath and getting a chance to catch-up on the things you missed throughout the last year. So with that in mind, we've invited writer and critic Clem Bastow to share some of her favourite releases. She'll be joined by the editor of The Monthly, Michael Williams, in a discussion that spans teen drama, the church of latter-day saints and yes, a Star Wars series that might just verge on being real prestige TV. We've kept it relatively spoiler free, but be warned, there's a couple of moments we get close to the edge.

'When you don't understand something that important about yourself, [diagnosis is] almost a kind of cheat code to go back and understand things that you've been through.' Each month we celebrate an Australian debut release of fiction or non-fiction in the Kill Your Darlings First Book Club. For August that debut is Late Bloomer: How an Autism Diagnosis Changed My Life by Clem Bastow, out now from Hardie Grant. Clem Bastow grew up feeling like she'd missed a key memo on human behaviour. She found the unspoken rules of social engagement confusing, arbitrary and often stressful. It wasn't until Clem was diagnosed as autistic, at age 36, that things clicked into focus. With wit and warmth, Clem reflects as an Autistic adult on her formative experiences as an undiagnosed young person, deconstructing the misconceptions and celebrating the realities of Autistic experience. First Book Club host Ellen Cregan spoke with Clem about the book and the experience of writing it at a live online event hosted by Yarra Libraries. Our theme song is Broke for Free's ‘Something Elated'. Sound production by Lloyd Pratt. Further reading: Read CB Mako's review of Late Bloomer in our August Books Roundup. Read about Clem's favourite books and reading habits in this month's Shelf Reflection. Clem wrote for KYD in 2015 about women screenwriters and 'the obligation to represent'. Late Bloomer is available now from your local independent bookseller. (more…)

Girl, written and illustrated by theplanetsdreamer (and whose real name is Kimberly Kotschi). This is a relatively new webcomic, a mix of sci-fi and fantasy, and plays upon the alien abduction convention. After that they check out Jackarais's Bicycle Boy, a work that has been going on for over 5 years. However, the narrative is well-paced and with incredible art. This is also a sci-fi story, but one set in an a post-apocalyptic future with a cyborg as its protagonist. The Two Guys wrap up the episode with the already-completed Broken Telephone, a unique series of interconnected storylines that become more solidly interwoven as the webcomic progresses. Ryan Estrada is the writer of all the storylines, but with each installment, 18 in all, he uses a different artist or artistic team to express his narrative vision.

As much as entrepreneurs can go on extolling the virtues of a great marketing strategy or knowing your target customer, at the end of the day, it's all about having something worth selling. No matter how great your advertising campaign may be, if you don't have something that people want to buy then you simply don't have a business. And yet, entrepreneurs all too often tend to gloss over this fact. They'll focus on everything else, but somehow forget to question whether or not their product is a winner, or even if it's a good idea in the first place. This is where Janna Bastow of ProdPad steps in, because she, more than anyone else in the world, knows exactly why effective product management is so instrumental to your startup's success. For Bastow, effective product management is when you're able to find that delicate balance between what's technically feasible, valuable for the customer, and profitable for the business, and define a roadmap on that basis. Ever since launching ProdPad in 2012, a tool that lets startup teams formally gather ideas, pick out the best ones and turn them into profitable products, Bastow has helped hundreds of startups and entrepreneurs in finding out what their perfect product is. More than anyone else, she knows how just difficult this process can be and why you shouldn't take it for granted. In this interview you will learn: What a product manager is and why you need one as part of your startup The best way to talk to customers and figure out what they actually want Step-by-step instructions on how to design a product roadmap Why you need a user story and what it means How to manage a remote team as a bootstrapped startup & much more!
