I usually try to put something witty or informative here. But this week, Patreon backer Matt McThorn is back, and he asked us to read Neal Adams's mad dream, Batman: Odyssey. He didn't know what he was getting himself or us into, so we have forgiven him, but this one feels like an all-timer. We also read two Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams stories from the 70s, as well as a classic EC Comics story that we don't rank since it's not a Batman story, but ties in with what we're talking about, and you can read it on-line HERE: https://from-dusk-till-drawn.com/2016/05/02/master-race-by-bernie-krigstein-usa-1955/. It ties in with Night of the Reaper, so if you haven't read that and a reading along, I would suggest reading that before reading this story. But aside from that homework, get ready for dinosaurs, the hollow Earth, stream of consciousness and Jazz wizards. A Vow From the Grave (Detective Comics V.1 #410) Night of the Reaper (Batman V.1 #237) Batman: Odyssey (Batman: Odyssey V.1 #1-6, V.2 #1-7) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

C2R Spookums Edition is here! You might even call it…Son of Spookums?? We have a full month of goofs and spooks planned for you. To kick us off, we're continuing our Batman Odyssey (that is, watching Batman movies Angie hasn't seen yet) with Batman & Robin, which hit theaters in 1997 and stars George Clooney and C2R Hall of Famer Arnold Schwarzenegger. Think of this movie as the “campy” piece to our spooky season movie puzzle. Jeff has waited patiently for years to share what he calls “The Times Square of Bad Movies” with Queen Beas, and the time is finally right! We don't spend too much time on all 27 of Mr. Freeze's ice puns, but there's still plenty of Arnold-based fun to be had. We also stumbled across the creepiest Halloween-themed sitcom episode in the history of the universe: “Stevil” from season eight of Family Matters. We just had to share the horror with you. Flashback 2012 A Neal Adams Look At Comic Book History

On this episode of Word Balloon, legendary artist Neal Adams returned to discuss many issues of the 2012 comic book scene. From finding a neutral way to help Gary Friedrich's financial situation, without taking sides in the Disney-Friedrich-Ghost Rider ownership lawsuit, to DC and Marvel's new place in their corporate parents structures.Neal talks about that era's Comic Book films based on DC Marvel and Dark Horse properties, and asks why wasn't John Stewart in the Green Lantern movie, given his prominent place on TV's Justice League series, which had a built in audience of millions? (Adams was the co-creator of John Stewart) You'll also hear a good dose of comic book history. From Neal's point of view of the Pinoy artist invasion of the 1970's with guys like Tony De Zuniga and Alfredo Alcala, plus other Adams peers like John Buscema, and Gene Colan. We discuss Batman Odyssey and Neal's Dark Horse Presents serial Blood. Plus some current and future projects including hints at a new Marvel project. We wrap up with an interesting look at how the idea of the motion comic has evolved into Neal's work in animatics for the motion picture industry.

Supercontext: an autopsy of media

This comic book series by Neal Adams is a strange combination of talent and narcissism, along with the realization that its lead character and its creator aren't as in control as they want to be. We discuss gun violence, Expanding Earth theory, and generational conflict to try to make sense of this one-of-a-kind experience. Interested in the media we discussed this episode? In this episode, Ryan and Justin examine Volume 2 of Batman: Odyssey, in which we learn the safest place to stand in an explosion, Ra’s al Ghul is not a sportsball fan, Neal Adams believes some interesting stuff, and coping with traumatic news on the back of a giant bat is not optimal. Also, Justin wonders about IP law in the DC Universe, the podcast gets tough on (Ra’s al Ghul-related) crime, and Batman gets the subterranean telepathic cyclops blues. Discussed: Batman: Odyssey, Volume 2, #1-7 (2011-2012).

Ryan and Justin discuss this and an actual trainwreck, take controversial stances on superheroes shooting pistols into a train car of civilians and 19th-century pseudoscience, and establish that Gotham City is in Pennsylvania. Also, writing for the Riddler is hard, Batman is an angry Bill Nye the Science Guy, Bruce Wayne has some tough talk for Alfred, and it’s raining manta rays (Hallelujah!).
