It's November 30th. This day in 1999, the city of Seattle was the site of massive protests during the meeting of the World Trade Organization. Jody, Niki, and Kellie discuss how the WTO protests represented a new kind of coalition between populist and environmental forces, and more — and marked a new era of protest in this country. It's the 22nd anniversary of the direct action shutdown of the World Trade Organization (WTO) meetings in Seattle. The WTO is a transnational economic institution created to regulate and facilitate global (corporate) trade. Organized by a scrappy group of organizers, the shutdown kicked off an anti-corporate globalization moment in North America which challenged austerity and the capitalist political economy. Globally, those movements had already been fighting austerity and corporate power for decades. We talk with Nancy Haque, Stephanie Guilloud and David Solnit (@dsolnit)- three organizers that were all part of Direct Action Network to Stop Corporate Globalization (DAN), the body that organized the shutdown. Bios// In 1999, our three guests were all grassroots lead organizers and co-founders of the Direct Action Network to Stop Corporate Globalization which organized the mass action shutdown of the WTO in Seattle. Nancy was a labor-community organizer with Portland Jobs with Justice which uniquely bridged the labor movement with the Direct Action Network and mobilized hundreds of students and community folks from Portland. Now, Nancy is the Executive Director of Basic Rights Oregon (@basicrights), ensuring that all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer Oregonians experience equality by building a broad and inclusive politically powerful movement, shifting public opinion, and achieving policy victories. Stephanie was a student at Evergreen State College where she worked with the Labor Education and Research Center and with student groups that mobilized hundreds of trained organized students. Now, Stephanie is co-director of Project South (@ProjectSouth). Stephanie is the editor of two anthologies: Through the Eyes of the Judged; Autobiographical Sketches from Incarcerated Young Men and Voices from the WTO; First-person Narratives from the People who Shut Down the World Trade Organization. David was with Art and Revolution Collective in the San Francisco Bay Area, and moved to Seattle for 6 months to organize as part of the Direct Action Network. Now, David is an arts organizer with the Climate Justice Arts Project--working to center arts organizing and narrative with Stop the Money Pipeline, Build Back Fossil Free and the Poor People's Campaign. He edited/co-authored "Globalize Liberation"--a post-Seattle WTO global justice and anti-capitalist analysis and organizing anthology and "The Battle of the Story of the Battle of Seattle." About the Shutdown WTO Organizers History Project// On the 20 year anniversary, a small group of friends and fellow DAN organizers put together The Shutdown WTO Organizers History Project-a website of organizers and first person accounts and analysis and co-published a 20-Year-Anniversary series of articles with Common Dreams. --------------------------------------- Links// The Shutdown WTO Organizers' History Project: https://www.shutdownwto20.org/ Remembering the Battle for Seattle: Organizers Launch Project to Reflect on 20 Years of Lessons (https://bit.ly/3ljIOpL) WTO Shutdown: A Few Things From the WTO Shutdown I Carry Into the Future (https://bit.ly/3xC853d) Follow Green and Red// https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast Donate to Green and Red Podcast// Become a recurring donor at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. On November 30, 1999, thousands of protestors locked arms and marched into downtown Seattle. They surrounded a convention center where a conference organized by the World Trade Organization was set to take place over the next four days. Most of the demonstrators were peaceful but among their ranks was a small core of protestors dressed in black clothes and ski masks waiting for the right moment to unleash violence and mayhem. It was one of the largest acts of mass civil disobedience in US history and marked the unofficial start of the anti-globalization movement. On this episode of History of the 90s, host Kathy Kenzora looks back at the rise of anti-globalization and the Battle in Seattle. Acquired from the New York Mets after being drafted in 2018, Seattle is excited to have a young prodigy in the organization. We also went over his sports card market and the importance on investing in Kelenic Specifically. Tremendous upside for a young baseball player with not enough hype around him. The WTO protests in November 1999 put Seattle on the map in a way that grunge and tech never could. The World Trade Organization had planned a meeting in the city to discuss trade agreements for the new millennium, but then tens of thousands of protestors filled the streets. For days, activists overwhelmed the event and the city's police force, which responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. The protesters were there to condemn corporate power and the potential impacts of free trade on human rights and the environment. And while the WTO ultimately continued its work, the protest had a big effect on Seattle and the world. It influenced similar movements to come, like Occupy Wall Street. And it impacted how we think and talk about capitalism, globalism and economic equity. Now, on the 20th anniversary of the so-called "Battle in Seattle," we invited a panel of local leaders to the Crosscut Talks podcast to discuss what happened in Seattle in 1999 and what it means to our world today. The episode begins with former Seattle police chief Norm Stamper and activist John Sellers, who are later joined by activist Nikkita Oliver and Nowell Coquillard, director of the Washington State China Relations Council. The conversation was recorded at KCTS9 studios in Seattle on November 19, 2019, as part of the Crosscut Talks Live series.

We return to the Tatumverse for Battle in Seattle, a movie that is not an action flick, as we expected, but instead a film based on actual events that happened in the late '90s that neither of us had ever heard of. Things take a serious turn in this episode as we do our best to have an intelligent and informed conversation about protests, police brutality, censored journalism, patriotism, and how 9/11 shaped millennials. Also: Katie does laundry, finds a knife in her couch (??), and her sister Hannah cameos!
AAAAARGH! Another non-conference home loss to a Pac-12 team. Karnowski remains hobbled with back trouble and the guards are hobbled with a complete lack of shooting touch. Is it time to panic? Can we Panic?!! Please? Adam, Chris and Mard say NAY! Don't panic, but do engage in some grave concern. We take at look at the Battle In Seattle, give out non-conference player grades and enjoy yet another moment with Heister. Also, due to some technical difficulties this episode is not up to our usual standards, we apologize. But you'll listen anyway, because reasons. freeirabrown@gmail.com; Twitter: @freeirabrown Merry Christmas!
Battle in Seattle is a dramatization about real life events in the WTO protests in seattle where none of the characters are guilty of anything and everyone is fundamentally good and people still manage to fall in love in spite of the fact that everyone is hitting everyone else throughout the movie. I dunno. i think if i wanted to know about the WTO protests in seattle, i shoulda watched a documentary about it. but i do as FATON asks.

Inspired by the new video release of SELMA, we look at two older protest pictures with guest Jamie Dew of the great film podcast The Dew Over. The two older films of BATTLE IN SEATTLE and PRIDE have us debating when there is too much star power in supporting roles, and the always important social issue of men's hair. But first, an interview from Chris Maynard with SELMA actress Tara Ochs on her film career and work in Atlanta.
In November 1999 police battled with anti-globalisation protestors for control of the streets of Seattle. The demonstrators were protesting against World Trade Organisation talks taking place in the US city. Norm Stamper was the Chief of Police in Seattle at the time. Photo: AP
