On November 30th, 1999, a huge movement spanning labor, environment, human rights, fair trade and more literally shut down the World Trade Organization in Seattle. It was milestone in the growing anti-corporate globalization movement and broke apart the inevitability of corporate neo-liberalism. In a new series of episodes, we're looking at the 25th anniversary of the "Battle in Seattle" talking with a number of people who participated in the organizing and its aftermath. Our first episode is with Nancy Haque who was an organizer with Portland Jobs with Justice and the Direct Action Network. Bio// Nancy was a labor-community organizer with Portland Jobs with Justice which uniquely bridged the labor movement with the Direct Action Network and mobilized hundreds of students and community folks from Portland. Since 1999, Nancy works in philanthropy to support non-profit organizations in Oregon. Prior to her current role, Nancy was the executive director of Basic Rights Oregon, an LGBTQ policy and advocacy organization. Before that she was the Building Political Power Director at Western States Center. She also worked as a national field organizer for Jobs with Justice and as a program specialist at the AFL-CIO. ------------------------ Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by Moody Links// + WTO Shutdown Organizers History Project (https://www.shutdownwto20.org/) Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ + Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/uvrdubcM) +NEW: Follow us on Substack (https://greenandredpodcast.substack.com) Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR Our Networks// +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ +We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork +Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/) This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. We're in the midst of the 30th anniversary of one of the darkest moments in our state's recent history: the standoff at the Branch Davidian compount at Mount Carmel, just outside of Waco, which culminated in the deaths of dozens of men, women and children. This event captured the attention of the militant white supremacist movement then, and has served as a rallying cry for them ever since. Meanwhile, this weekend, former President Donald Trump is planning a rally at Waco in a blatant pledge of alignment with the paramilitary conspiracist fringe right, in an obvious move to rally them to his side. We've invited Lindsay Schubiner, Director of Programs for the Western States Center, to join us to recall the Branch Davidian tragedy, discuss its impact on the American right over the last 30 years, and ask the question: what are Donald Trump's real goals in connecting his campaign to Waco? Once you experience Eric Ward, a shift in your thinking and your soul is inevitable. An expert on authoritarian movements with deep roots in the United States, Eric argues that we have the power to counter them by building the most inclusive multi-racial democracy possible. As executive director of Western States Center he is pragmatic, providing training and tools for parents whose children are targeted by hate groups, preparing community organizations to operate in hostile environments and standing with local governments on the front lines of defending democracy. And he is visionary, convening culture-shifting artists and supporting legislators in working across the partisan divide to expel colleagues who participate in hate crimes. On this episode of Power Station, Eric explains how antisemitism became the driving conspiratorial narrative for white supremacist groups. This narrative is used to undercut the transformative achievements of the civil rights movement, which defeated a system of white supremacy, by classifying African American leaders and communities as pawns of the Jews. It is foundational to replacement theory, a fear-based notion that is animating social media, Fox News, and members of Congress. The antidote to this threat is the truth and our collective action.

Ryan Busse is a former firearms executive who helped build one of the world's most iconic gun companies, and was nominated multiple times by industry colleagues for the prestigious Shooting Industry Person of The Year Award. Busse is an environmental advocate who served in many leadership roles for conservation organizations, including as an advisor for the United States Senate Sportsmen's Caucus and the Biden Presidential Campaign. He remains a proud outdoorsman, gun owner, father, and resident of Montana. About the book.... A long-time former executive at one of the country's top gun manufacturers reveals how his industry radicalized a large swathe of America, and explains how it must change before we can reduce gun violence and heal as a nation. Ryan Busse has traveled a long, circuitous path along the American gun journey. As an avid hunter, outdoorsman, and conservationist–all things that the firearms industry was built on–he rose to the highest ranks of the rapidly growing, multibillion-dollar firearms industry. But replacing self-imposed decency with rampant fear-mongering, racism, hardline conservative politics, massive profits from semi-automatic weapons sales, and McCarthyesque policing have driven Busse to do something few other gun executives have done: he's ending his 30-year career in the industry to tell its secrets. He watched the industry change from its smaller, less corporate and far-less-powerful form to the partisan, power-hungry entity it is today. He thought he could go up against the power of the industry from within, and over the years had made small inroads toward sensible gun ownership and use. But that's simply not possible anymore. This book is an insider's call-out, a voice-driven tale of personal transformation, and a fast ride through wild times and colorful characters that populate a much-speculated-about, but little-known industry. It's also a story of how authoritarianism spreads in the guise of freedom, how voicing one's conscience becomes an act of treason in a culture that demands sameness and loyalty. Whenever women have raised their voices and demanded equity in our society, or whenever oppressive gender relations have been threatened, a vicious backlash or counterattack inevitably follows. Sometimes under the cover of religion, other times justified by appealing to culture, tradition, or science, male supremacy and misogyny are central and alarmingly consistent features defining the politics of the global far right. What is it about the worldview and overarching political project of the far right that makes the thought of gender equality and an end to traditional gender roles and hierarchies such a threatening prospect? And how has the crusade against “gender ideology” galvanized far-right politics around the globe? In this special series of The Marc Steiner Show, co-hosted by Marc Steiner and Bill Fletcher Jr., we will examine the rise of the right in the US and beyond, we will explore the different tendencies and motivations fueling today's surge in far-right politics, and we will engage with a range of critical voices who can help us understand how we got here and what we can do about it. In Episode Three of “Rise of the Right,” Marc and Bill are joined by Judith Butler and Alex DiBranco to discuss how, beyond the surface-level individual displays of misogyny among individual members of the far right, gender politics are a definitive feature of far-right ideologies and social movements.Judith Butler is a world-renowned philosopher and gender theorist whose books have been translated into over 27 languages. We are living in perilous times. Racism, homophobia, anti-immigrant violence and misogyny have been unleashed, normalized and embraced by elected leaders and regular citizens, from school boards to state legislatures and Capitol Hill. Organized hate groups are expanding their ranks by targeting an aggrieved citizenry and most recently children. Middle and high school students, who have been isolated and tethered to their devices throughout an ongoing pandemic are particularly susceptible to these manipulations. The Western States Center, acclaimed for its systems-based approach to building a 21-century civil rights movement, is standing up for these young people. It created a toolkit, Confronting White Nationalism to guide impacted schools in how to intervene when students are on the receiving end of abuse or are being recruited into the fold. Adrienne van der Valk, leads the training and is growing its footprint across the nation. She talks to Power Station about engaging students without shaming them, the pervasive role of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, the heroism of teachers who navigate these conditions without support and the obligation we all share to confronting hate.
The late Representative John Lewis (D-Ga.) speaks at a press conference at the House Triangle in Washington, D.C., to call for reforms to restore voting rights. June 25, 2019 marked six years since the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in Shelby County v. Holder. The decision gutted the Voting Rights Act, making it easier for states and localities to revert to discriminatory practices that restrict voting rights, with a particular impact on people of color, Native Americans, the disabled and students. | Image credited to Public Citizen is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 On today's show: 0:08 – How are the voting rights bills are shaping up in the Senate? This two-part series looks at the causes for, and ways to address, hate, hostility, and prejudice in our communities and across the country. Following up on the conversation with Ken Stern in May, we talk with Eric Ward, Executive Director of the Western States Center and a Senior Fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center. Eric has spent the last 30 years exploring the relationship between authoritarian movements, hate, and violence. A respected author, speaker, and activist, he talks about how and why white nationalism has become so prevalent and what individuals and communities can do to combat this dangerous trend. Eric cautions that we cannot ignore what is happening and that racial inequality and the deepening divide in the country are threats to all of our freedoms.
Eric Ward (@BulldogShadow) is the Executive Director of the Western States Center, a social change organization that works to strengthen inclusive democracy. We end by going through a playlist of Eric's favorite “courageous conversation” songs that got him through the pandemic. For a variety of reasons, students bring white nationalist and extremist ideas into schools. For most educators this is a challenge because this is rarely a topic for professional learning and this is an unusually difficult topic to address. The Western States Center recently published the 2nd edition of their Confronting White Nationalism in Schools Toolkit and in this episode we will meet one of the co-authors Jessica Acee. In our discussion we learn about white nationalism in general and how to use the toolkit in school contexts.

Monday, March 30th 8:00PM Eastern/ 5:00PM Pacific The Context of White Supremacy examines the Confronting White Nationalism In Schools toolkit. This report was published by the Western States Center and authored by a group of mostly White Women educators, Nora Flanagan, Jessica Acee, and Lindsay Schubiner. Ms. Acee has one White parent and one non-white parent. After detecting a surge in White children promoting Nazi propaganda and explicitly White Supremacist content, the authors/educators decided not to be spectators. Their toolkit offers specific examples of potential scenarios or racist conduct, and suggestions on how best to neutralize these problems. We'll ask for a distinction between overtly "White Nationalist" conduct and typical White behavior towards black people. We'll also ask where these young Whites are acquiring these White Supremacist ideas and why aren't their mothers and fathers outraged and committed to preventing their children from growing up into adult Racists. #RacistChild **Details for The C.O.W.S. 2020 Counter-Racist Yoga Retreat: Washington D.C.** #4MoYears INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Invest in The C.O.W.S. - https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. Eric has years of organizing against white supremacy, with a particular focus on white nationalist organizations. He details how antisemitism and racism are at the core of white nationalism and encourages us to understand the problem in order to address it. Eric explains how white nationalism is a growing social movement in the U.S. that is building political power and having a major impact on legislative policy. We’ve seen this with the current administration’s immigration policy and clear connection to white nationalism. Eric shares strategies Western States Center uses to organize, such as local research shared with civil rights organizations, coalition building, school-based materials, and trainings – and provides a variety of ways everyone can fight white nationalism. He also talks about how he got into this work. I hope you enjoy the conversation. www.westernstatescenter.org/ Twitter: @wstatescenter
