On May 1, 2025, Sam Altman's identity project, now called World (formerly Worldcoin), launched iris and face-scanning locations in six U.S. cities. The goal? Prove you're human — and get a World ID in return. In this episode, Vicki Davis breaks down how the tech works, why it's free, and the serious ethical concerns for educators and parents alike. You'll learn the three major reasons this global ID push is happening: Stopping identity fraud and deepfakes Verifying age online to protect children Distinguishing humans from synthetic AI agents With connections to platforms like Match.com, Discord, and Reddit, and the backing of Visa, this story is about far more than tech — it's about privacy, control, and the future of our students. Kiosks are like robots that don't move. They replace people for high-volume, repetitive tasks like checking people in or issuing paperwork. Now the General Services Administration is looking for ideas for using kiosks to identify people or issue credentials, remotely. For more details, Federal Drive host Tom Temin spoke to Darlene Gore, GSA's director of identity, credential and access management.
Wednesday May 4, 2022 - Last year the IRS signed an $86 million contract with identity verification provider ID.me to provide biometric identity verification services. As soon as the deal was announced, there was an outcry - and the IRS seemed to backtrack. Yesterday IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig told a subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee that the taxpayer access to the online IRS depends on ."identity proofing." Something the current system just isn't good at. It appears from all the news, the IRS is backtracking again - going back to ID.me and biometric data of taxpayers. The public - along with many members of Congress - loudly objected to the invasion of privacy necessary to access their own records. Now, that the roar has quieted, the IRS is back at it, pushing ID.me on the unwary public. Attorney Steven A. Leahy revisits the IRS ID.me controversy on this episode of Today's Tax Talk https://fcw.com/digital-government/2022/05/irs-leader-explains-why-irs-went-idme/366516/ https://venturebeat.com/2022/04/15/the-irs-id-me-debacle-a-teaching-moment-for-tech/ https://www.reuters.com/technology/identity-check-contractor-idme-fires-dozens-fraud-team-congress-probes-2022-04-26/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/steven-leahy1/message
Building a digital identity platform from scratch in the “unbanked” population of the South African market poses significant challenges. The need for frictionless,customer-centric solutions, however, is not unique to any one geography, industry, or use case. In this week's State of Identity podcast, host, Cameron D'Ambrosi is joined by Shaun Strydom, Founder, Executive Head, and Identity Futurologist at Contactable to discuss the race for digital identity orchestration and federation. They go beyond the bells and whistles of biometrics and verification solutions and reveal how fully orchestrated onboarding solves for organizational complexities when servicing customer journeys digitally.

BioConnect is a biometrics security company with a different idea–that your identity is comprised of your unique biometric data. They believe that all individuals should be able to prove their unique identity through biometric data including their face, voice, and fingerprints, and use this to access their bank accounts and other secured information, phones, and more. To accomplish this, BioConnect works with large enterprise corporations to allow their clients to access their information using biometric security features. Individuals have the ability to use a variety of different biometric data to secure different data and actions, because security is contexual–for example, you may only want to use your fingerprint to unlock your phone, but you might want to require the verification of face and voice in order to transfer large sums of money out of your bank accounts. Though BioConnect already has thousands of clients worldwide, they see their technology becoming more important, as all smartphones will have biometric capabilities by 2020. This technology has direct implications and applications for cryptospace, and the upcoming launch of a developers portal will enable individuals to apply this technology to more use cases in the future.
