In her new memoir, The Race to Be Myself, Semenya opens up about having her skill and merit challenged on a global stage and choosing self-love over it all. The commission says there are still many discriminatory hurdles that intersex persons must overcome. This as the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) made a ruling on the Caster Semenya's case in July this year. The court found that World Athletics is bound by international law and may not discriminate without compelling reasons for doing so. When Caster Semenya sprinted to victory in the 2009 World Championships, it should have marked her place as an athlete on the global stage. Instead, it opened the door to questions about whether she should be allowed to compete at all. Semenya was called for a gender verification test and it was leaked to the media that she was born with differences of sexual development (DSD), meaning she has elevated levels of testosterone. Since then, the two-time Olympic champion has been at the centre of a huge debate about gender in sport. This has played out entirely in the public eye, but often without Semenya's voice at all. Until now. I'm Mary Mandefield, and in this episode of Noted we'll hear Caster's story in her own words. As always, I want to hear from you on this. If we don't, then women and young girls will not choose sport. That is, and has always been, the Federation's sole motivation. “I make 800 meters. 800 meters does not make me. You must go back to the statistics. You will understand. If you look at my stats, you'll understand what I mean. So for me, I have no unfinished business in the 800 meters because I have done what I was supposed to do.” Caster Semenya is a two-time Olympic champion and three-time world champion in the 800 meters. She just released her book, The Race To Be Myself, where she opened up for the first time about the personal and professional effects of taking hormone-suppressing medication for six years following her win at the 2009 World Championships at 18 years old. Semenya is considered a female athlete with differences in sexual development (DSD) due to her hyperandrogenism, which leads to higher-than-usual levels of natural testosterone in her body. For the past few years, World Athletics has required DSD athletes to medically reduce their testosterone levels in order to compete in events from 400 meters to the mile. As a result, Semenya has not raced her signature event since 2019. Instead, a lot of her time in the past few years has been focused in the courtroom as she's taken on several legal battles against World Athletics to have the regulations overturned. Europe's top human rights court ruled in Semenya's favor that her appeal to a Swiss Federal Tribunal following the dismissal of her case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was not properly heard. She's awaiting a verdict from the European Court of Human Rights. World Athletics issued a statement to Reuters this week saying that the governing body has only ever been interested in protecting the female category. The book includes a gripping account of how she went to a hospital in South Africa expecting to undergo an anti-doping test only to realize later she was undergoing a gender verification test. Another test followed in Berlin before the World Championship final and then a media storm blew up when she learned about her condition along with the rest of the world when the results of the test were leaked. The book also includes some interesting and insightful recaps of her races at the London Olympics and the world championships that followed. I fully understand this is a hotly debated topic within the sport. This isn't going to be a debate but rather hearing more of Caster's story now that she's finally opened up about it and why her focus now shifts to fighting for others. Athlete. Icon. Activist. In this episode of Pagecast, Sias du Plessis, a media and communications consultant, chats with the phenomenal Caster Semenya. Aged eighteen, Semenya shot to fame on the global sporting stage for her blistering speed. But shrouding her monumental win were fierce rumours about her physical body rather than her phenomenal performance. Called ‘a threat to the sport' and ‘not woman enough', she found herself at the centre of the debate around the newly drawn line between gender and sport. Throughout the intense speculation, harmful rumours and long legal battle she has remained quiet, letting her running do the talking until she was banned from competing and defending her Olympic title in 2020. Now, Caster is ready to own her story and tell it in full. In this book, Caster speaks openly about growing up in a loving family and community that never regarded her as different, just Caster; of her early years understanding her agency, sexuality and athletic ability; and of her infectious spirit and tenacity to be the best. Told with conviction and humour, The Race To Be Myself is the story of a life lived in the spotlight, a manifesto for acceptance and change for all. This is the unforgettable story of one of the most recognisable athletes in the world, and of a woman's journey to run free.‘ A story that makes us all interrogate our humanity and the world we build with our actions every day.' Transgender athletes competing in women's sports have been a topic of controversy in recent years. The issue has been brought to light by several high-profile cases, including those of Riley Gaines, Lia Thomas, Laurel Hubbard, Fallon Fox, Janae Marie Kroc, and more recently Anne Andres and the Avi Silverberg competition. One of the main arguments against transgender women competing in women's sports is the potential for them to have a competitive advantage due to their biological sex at birth. This argument is based on the fact that male bodies tend to have certain physical advantages over female bodies, such as greater muscle mass, bone density, and lung capacity. In the case of Riley Gaines and Lia Thomas, Lia being a MTF athlete boasting incredible gains in their ranking, and Riley Gains being one of the few to speak out about it.Similarly, Laurel Hubbard, a transgender weightlifter from New Zealand, faced controversy when she became the first openly transgender athlete to compete in the Olympics.Fallon Fox, a transgender mixed martial arts fighter, faced backlash when it was revealed that she had previously competed in men's MMA before transitioning. Critics argued that Fox had an unfair advantage over her female opponents due to her past experiences as a male fighter.Janae Marie Kroc, a transgender bodybuilder, faced criticism when she competed in bodybuilding competitions, with some claiming that she had an advantage over her female competitors due to her prior male physiology. However, Janae wasn't competing against women. Why is that?Anne Andres and Avi Silverberg are the most recent addition with a biological male setting a weightlifting record that was previously set by a trans athlete.Caster Semenya, a South African middle-distance runner, faced controversy when the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) implemented new rules limiting testosterone levels for female athletes with differences of sex development (DSD). Semenya, who has a naturally high level of testosterone due to her DSD, was forced to take medication to lower her testosterone levels in order to compete.Biden, Wolrd athletics and several other sports board are trying to get a handle on this all... but how are they doing it all?In conclusion, the issue of transgender athletes competing in women's sports is a complex and controversial one. While there is some evidence to suggest that transgender women may have a competitive advantage over biological women, there is also a need to balance the rights of transgender athletes to participate in sports with the need for fair competition.Support the show@andrewPFM @PrideFitnessandMovement

For the 32nd Olympic Games, one of South Africa's modern icons, 800-meter champion Caster Semenya, will not be making the trip northwards. She has been barred from the Tokyo Olympics where she had hoped to defend a crown she won in 2012 and 2016. We discuss with Associate Professor Matteo Winkler the legal, sociological and ethical implications of this legal decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, or CAS. It targets women athletes like Semenya who are born with naturally high levels of testosterone, what's called “hyper-androgyny”. Winkler and fellow academic, Doctor Giovanna Gilleri, published a 40-page study deconstructing the controversy and what it reflects on the law, sports politics, transgender sexuality… and the West's sometimes uncomfortable position on femininity in the Global South. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleague Chris Baldwin on the WAAR Room on Angry Afro Radio. Videos of this discussion have also been posted on the Angry Afro Radio YouTube page. We spoke with her Thursday, July 1. We discussed defending the rights of all LGBTQ athletes, including Caster Semenya, the South African runner and two-time Olympic gold medalist, who was kept out of the Tokyo Olympics by the discriminatory policies of World Athletics against intersex athletes, and weightlifter Laurel Hubbard from New Zealand, who is set to become the first openly transgender woman to compete in an Olympics. We strongly defended their human rights, and those of all other athletes, to play, fight, train, and compete. The Tokyo Olympics are still set to start July 23, despite a new surge of Covid-19 cases in Tokyo and the rest of Japan, and even worse surges and lockdowns in many countries. We discussed how all these organizations which are involved in running what could very well be a major international superspreader event have betrayed the athletes and the public at large. We also discussed the weak slap on the wrist Russia received for its state-sponsored doping program, and how numerous Russian athletes are still slated to compete at the Tokyo Olympics. Plus, we slammed the theocratic and authoritarian Iranian regime for its ongoing attacks, threats, murder, and torture of Iranian athletes, and the forcing of Iranian athletes to throw contests to avoid facing Israeli athletes. Moving over to the lovely world of professional boxing, we discussed the upcoming trilogy fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder on July 24, which few people want to see. We discussed its most likely outcome, and how it seems that Wilder has become unhinged leading up to this fight and what that may mean when they do fight. In addition, we discussed the potential fight between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk, which has still not been officially announced, and what this means for the heavyweight division and a title unification fight between Fury and Joshua. And we talked about racism and white supremacy in baseball, social audio apps including Cubhouse and Spotify's Greenroom, and more. Double Olympic 800 metres champion Caster Semenya spoke about qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics Games in a new event after defending her South African championships 5,000m title in Pretoria, on Thursday. Semenya trimmed nearly 15 seconds off her personal best by crossing the line in 15:52.28 — 42.28 secs outside the Tokyo qualifying time of 15:10. The race was staged at an altitude of 1,339 m (4,393 feet) and Semenya is considering running the same distance at sea level, where the air is less thin and times generally faster. “If the guys in Durban (sea-level city) do something in May, I might run,” Semenya said after her victory. “I am pretty happy with how I ran (today) — it is all about having fun. I can’t really focus on Tokyo if I’m still building up myself at the moment.” Last year, Semenya announced she would pursue Olympics 200m qualification. But the three-time 800m world champion has changed her mind, believing distance races will lengthen her career. "I am 30 years old and if I were to do sprints it would be a risk to my muscles. In distance (running), there is more time to find consistency," said the three-time world 800m champion.

The CAS' decision comes in a challenge to the International Association of Athletics Federations' regulations for athletes with differences of sex development brought by Semenya, the Black South African runner who produces more testosterone naturally than has been deemed typical of cisgender women. The regulations that Semenya challenged would require her to artificially suppress her hormone levels in order to continue to compete in women's events. In the executive summary of the still-confidential full decision, the court explained that the “regulations are discriminatory but that ... such discrimination is a necessary.”
