And if this is too big of a commitment, I'm always thankful for a simple cup of coffee.]Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility, often shortened to Trans Day of Visibility (or TDOV).It was created by Rachel Crandall Crocker in Michigan in 2009, and it's now celebrated in countries around the world. Most estimates put trans and nonbinary people at between 0.5 and 1 percent of the total U.S. population, but some data suggests we may be as high as two percent. Personally, I think it's higher than that. I believe there are millions of closeted trans and nonbinary and gender-expansive and gender-questioning people in our country who don't have the necessary encouragement and resources to live authentically. I don't need to elaborate on how our political climate has been saturated with an ongoing campaign of fear and terror against trans people. That's why visibility is so important: it saves lives, it gives voice to the voiceless, and it offers joy and hope and comfort where scarce.I would not be alive today were it not for three primary blessings: 1) friends of all backgrounds who ensured I had love and safety and dignity, 2) the grace of a merciful and loving God who kept me buoyed through many difficult years of feeling incongruent with the world around me, and 3) every trans and nonbinary person whose visibility gave me strength and confidence to come out in my own time.I exist today in my authenticity because of the visibility of trans and nonbinary people whose selflessness and courage paved roads that have permitted me to navigate the world with an expansive liberation in broader society they never got to experience.I think of the closeted trans girl in Central Texas who once felt so alone and scared and ashamed of how I was born. For many years, I prayed every day that God would cleanse me of my desire to be who I really am, and it took a long time to recognize that being trans is a gift from God and part of my soul's commission.I thank God that I'm trans. I can't help but feel sympathy for the tens of millions of non-trans people in our country who are constantly burdened and tortured with struggling to meet the gendered expectations demanded of them by so much of society.I think many non-trans people struggle with how our culture successfully and cruelly controls them, forcing them to be who they're not, shaming them who they really are, all in service to a painful and unnecessary gendered framework that insists on an unforgiving rigidity solely meant to avoid discomfort based on irrational fear.I think non-trans people who hate those of us who are trans are really motivated by a taught fear of themselves. It has to be terrifying to suppress oneself, only to witness people who have rejected that painful suppression. Every transphobic argument can basically be boiled down to: "I actually don't know the science at all or have a good argument here, but trans people challenge my long held view of the world and it's very uncomfortable and everyone should be expected to move around my discomfort."There's obvious bigotry in that mindset, of course, but there's also an extraordinary and unyielding and obvious pain, too.Trans people are a constant reminder that there's an entire world outside of what most non-trans people have been aggressively and irrationally conditioned to accept.Today is about trans visibility and trans joy, to be sure, but I would also like to believe it can mean so much more. It can mean that non-trans people feel greater comfort and acceptance in embracing their own authenticity—however that may look—by the example trans and nonbinary people set.I want every trans and nonbinary child in this country to be safe and loved and empowered, and I also want that for every non-trans child. I want every trans and nonbinary adult to be safe and loved and empowered, and I also want that for every non-trans adult.I think that's an essential North Star worthy of any compass. That's why I'm visible, and that's what I wish for all of you, too.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. International Transgender Day of Visibility is celebrated annually on March 31 to celebrate the accomplishments and visibility of transgender people while raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide. This day is an opportunity to recognize the resilience and strength of transgender individuals and advocate for their equal rights and opportunities. My guest on today's episode of the Allyship in Action Podcast, Josephine Guckiean, a transgender woman and leader at Deloitte shares with us tools to be an ally year-round to the transgender community: The Power of Visibility: Josephine's story highlights the critical importance of being seen and heard, especially for marginalized communities. Visibility is not just about existing; it's about claiming space and asserting one's right to authenticity. Allyship as Action: True allyship goes beyond passive acceptance. It involves active intervention, speaking up against injustice, and amplifying the voices of those who are often silenced. The Impact of Societal Norms: The conversation reveals how deeply ingrained societal norms can shape individual experiences, leading to isolation, depression, and even violence. Challenging these norms requires courage and collective effort. The Importance of Education and Understanding: Many misconceptions about the transgender community stem from a lack of knowledge. Education and open dialogue are essential tools for breaking down barriers and fostering empathy. Humanity's Shared Experience: Despite our differences, we are united by our shared humanity. Recognizing this common thread is crucial for building a more inclusive and compassionate world. Actionable Allyship Takeaway: Be an active ally. If you witness or hear something that perpetuates harmful stereotypes or discrimination against the transgender community, speak up. Your voice matters, and it can make a real difference. Favorite quote: "Allyship is the foundation of our community. Because allies are in. We're not in. Allies are at table speaking our names when we're not there. Allies are defending us. When it matters." Find Josephine on LinkedIn and Julie Kratz at https://www.nextpivotpoint.com/ and on LinkedIn.

Darrell Castle talks about the Christian High Holy Day of Easter or Resurrection Sunday and how President Biden chose to use the day to honor Transgender Visibility Day. Transcription / Notes SPIRITUAL WAR Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. This is Friday the 5th day of April in the year of our Lord 2024. I will be talking about the Christian High Holy Day of Easter or Resurrection Sunday along with Transgender Visibility Day which tragically this year occurred on the same day thanks to the President of the United States. Yes, my beat is spiritual today although I admit that theology is not my strong suit, I will endeavor to do my best. Whether or not you are a Christian and whether you are a believer in the biblical account of creation, i.e. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” Genesis 1-1: there is a sentence that humanity has understood throughout man's time on earth until just a few short years ago. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27. That sentence says there are only two genders in the created order, two sexes, male and female. Sunday, March 31st was Easter in 2024, the holiest day on the Christian calendar. It is a day that Christians believe Jesus died to pay for the sins of created humanity not to celebrate those sins. It is the day when we Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, then he is still buried somewhere and we as Christians are lost and Christianity fails. God saw all of humanity, created in his image, condemned without a way of redemption so he gave his son as the sacrifice for that sin so we would not have to pay it. That, I argue, is the very essence of Christianity. This past March 31st was doubly tragic because it gave those who reject the created order of God a chance to celebrate that rejection through Transgender Visibility Day. I ponder this because its not as if this tiny section of the population is not already the most visible segment of people in America. The president, who says he is catholic, used the day as a chance to make political points with his base. I tell you right now folks that his base must be a pretty strange group of people if they still support Joe Biden after this. The president welcomed Transgender Visibility Day by saying “Today, on Transgender Day of Visibility, I have a simple message to all trans Americans: I see you. He went on later to say, “You are made in the image of God, and you are worthy of respect and dignity.” He went on and on about the travails of the group of people he celebrated. His official language concluded with this emphasis, “in the year of our Lord.” Many churches, corporations, and politicians joined him in celebrating his words and his proclamation. Apparently, the president did not come up with the idea of Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31st specifically to insult Christians but he simply chose not to move it or ignore it despite the fact that he would be spitting in the faces of Christians across the world. My understanding is that the day was started 15 years ago by president Obama who chose March 31st to set it apart from the Transgender Day of Remembrance in November and Pride Month which is the entire month of June. He also had to work very hard to keep from bumping into one of the many days already set aside to celebrate that condition. Let me just take a minute to list some of the days of celebration we already have: January Third Friday: International Fetish Day. February 12: National Freedom to Marry Day. February 25-29: Aeromantic Spectrum Awareness Week. March: Bisexual Health Awareness Month. March 1: Zero Discrimination Day. March 20-24: National LGBT Health Awareness Week. March 31: International Transgender Day of Visibility. April 6: Asexuality Day. April 22: Day of Silence. April 24-30: International Lesbian Visibility Week.

We are celebrating and recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility with a deep and meaningful conversation with Beck Gee. Beck is a master's level clinician with an undergraduate degree in Sociology with an emphasis on Gender & Sexuality and a master's degree in Addiction Counseling. Beck has worked in the mental health and substance use field for over 10 years in various capacities. The main focus of his work has been invested in the LGBTQI+ community, adolescents, and families. Over this decade, Beck has trained numerous facilities on LGBTQI+ best practices, has been a keynote and presenter at many conferences and has facilitated workshops about LGBTQI+, trauma, adolescents, gender and sexuality.   Beck grew up outside of Los Angeles and has lived in many states across the U.S. He got sober July 11, 2005, and believes recovery is the foundation of his success and gave him the ability to live authentically. Beck's superpower is using his platform to speak out about issues of social justice. International Transgender Day of Visibility (often referred to as TDOV or Trans Day of Visibility) is an annual event dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide, as well as a celebration of their contributions to society. The event began in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of LGBTQ+ recognition of transgender people, citing the frustration that the only well-known transgender-centered day was the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which mourned the murders of transgender people but did not acknowledge and celebrate living members of the transgender community. The first International Transgender Day of Visibility was held on March 31, 2009. ______________________________________ Resources: // The Trevor Project: If you are thinking about harming yourself — get immediate support. International Transgender Day of Visibility is a day of celebration, support, and love within the transgender community and among allies, and it is especially important amid the ongoing legislative efforts across the country targeting the lives, the health, and the well being of trans individuals.  According to the Human Rights Campaign, which is tracking anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced in statehouses across the country, just in these first few months of 2023, there have been a record number of bills that target transgender people specifically. We speak with Shelby Chestnut, Executive Director of the Transgender Law Center about the history of the day, and finding joy amid the ongoing harassment, discrimination, and political violence that trans people continue to face.

Today we're talking about diversity in our sport with Philly Race Director, Running USA Board Member, and owner of All Fitness Events, Kathleen Titus. Kathleen and I met last May at the Buffalo Marathon and remained in touch bonding over a passion for running and how to make a difference in the community. I invited her on the show as a friend and someone I admire and respect, but I had no idea we'd dive into this topic of inclusion in our sport and how leaders like her are working to ensure everyone feels represented at our races. As the city that loves you back, it's no wonder Kathleen was chosen as race director for the Philly marathon.  She is all about returning the love she feels for this sport and our athletes. I can't wait to share her with you! Please not that we will be covering the topic of transgender athletes in sport and there have been a few developments to this rapidly evolving topic since we recorded…including the World Athletics ban on transgender women from competing in female world ranking events  that goes into effect today March, 31st. Today, March 31st, is also International Transgender Day of Visibility. And while there is still much to learn when it comes to understanding the conflicting needs and rights between different groups, I believe everyone deserves to feel like they belong in our community and am honored to be connected with people like Kathleen who are dedicated to being a voice that inspires change for the benefit of those who need to be seen. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mayberunningwillhelp/message

This Friday, we celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility, an opportunity to celebrate the many contributions trans people have made to society as well as raise awareness for the work that needs to be done to achieve gender equality for all.  We are currently witnessing a wave of anti-trans legislation across the country, but the criminalization of trans people is nothing new. For over 20 years, Louisiana's Crime Against Nature by Solicitation law (or CANS for short) made offering certain sexual acts for money a felony, with penalties including up to 5 years in prison, hard labor, and mandatory registration on the sex offender database. These harsh penalties never applied to the state's other anti-sex work laws, and were specifically designed to target queer people, especially Black trans women. Louisiana strengthened CANS in 1992 and by 2011, 40 percent of people on the New Orleans sex offender registry were convicted under CANS. Of that, 75 percent were women, and 79 percent were Black. Our guests today have been fighting to make New Orleans a safer place for transgender and gender non-conforming people in the face of this pernicious law that targets and criminalizes them. In addition to building spaces for Black trans women to rest, learn, live and thrive, Wendi Cooper and Milan Nicole Sherry have dedicated their lives to repealing the law that once threatened their own lives. A recent documentary, "CANS Can't Stand," highlights Wendi, Milan, and others' fight against CANS and efforts to build community for trans women in New Orleans and beyond. We are so excited to speak with them all about their tenacious activism and the experience of releasing “CANS Can't Stand” at a time of such backlash against LGBTQ rights and representation.

You may have heard that we're changing things up. It's true: we're retiring ReCHARGE Your Life and dropping a brand new show very soon! In the meantime, we're looking back on one of our favorite episodes from 2021: a beautiful and important story from our guest, Valerie Paris.Summary:Ideas. Ideas. Ideas. Valerie Paris shares with us her favorite book on ideas. How they move through the universe, how they visit you and how they leave you. Profound words on the concept of ideas. And that is just the beginning of our conversation with Valerie. Valerie discusses her decision to transition two years ago. Her transition began when she asked herself the question: If you could live your life how you want to, and you could do anything, what would that look like? And she realized that she would be happier if she transitioned to a woman. She shares her story and, in particular, her fear that she would be fired when she told her company that she was going to transition. Throughout her story, Valerie illustrates her courage and how it manifested itself during her life. And, we talked about understanding our fear and how the world could change if we stop acting on fear. It is an incredibly personal story. And, we recorded it on International Transgender Day of Visibility (an amazing coincidence and we are thrilled the universe made that happen for us—beautiful!). Valerie Paris is a game designer with a background in marketing, community engagement, and immersive storytelling.
