My thoughts on all three volumes of The Black Hood comic series! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Sheryll Cashin, a law professor and former White House staffer, has spent nearly three decades grappling with US residential segregation and resulting racial inequality. Her most recent book, “White Space, Black Hood: Opportunity Hoarding and Segregation in the Age of Inequality” reflects these decades of examination and analysis. She recently was featured in an CNN.com analysis of affluent, majority-white Buckhead seeking to secede from Atlanta. At the invitation of Chairwoman Maxine Waters, she will be testifying on residential exclusion and what to do about it Fri, Oct 15. We talk with her on the next Port of Harlem Talk Radio. 2022 Episode 30 --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/port-of-harlem-talk-radio/support
Under-appreciated. It's a label that applies to many of the creators we have on this show, but never has it applied more than to today's guest: Rick Burchett. A journeyman penciller who's worked at virtually every publisher under the sun (including First, Pacific, Capital, AC and DC and Marvel, natch), Rick often changed his style to fit the content of the comic. Pre-DC, he worked on books like E-Man, American Flagg!, and The Phantom. He pencilled the adventures of most of the Justice League, including Batman, the Flash, Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern. He may be most recognized for his initial run on Impact Comics' Black Hood title and his long association with the animated Batman books, like the Batman and Robin Adventures. He even played a big role in helping someone named Jim Lee avoid becoming a doctor by breaking into comics instead. So, what we're trying to say is this: Rick is the man!__________________________________If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. In the Mood for Chaos: A Riverdale Roasting and Recap Podcast
Hello all, we've managed to extract ourselves from the 5-and-a-half feet of snow that dropped on us over the winter, and now that Miranda can open her back door and Evelyn can walk instead of wade through snowdrifts...it's time: At last, the first musical episode of Riverdale is upon us, and the question of the hour is, simply: Why? Why is Carrie a musical at all? Why was Riverdale a musical at all? Why was Carrie: The Musical chosen to be said musical - other than Roberto's weird Stephen King kink (Stephen Kink, if you will)? Why choose it if you don't show the two really important scenes? Why is a student directing the school musical? Why is there a drama department, auditorium, costumes, lights, and sets but no drama teacher? Why is everyone encouraging Jughead to be even more insufferable? Why is Alice in her daughter's school musical? Why is Chuck back? Why is Sheriff Dad wandering around the dressing rooms unattended? Why is Archie such a bonehead? Why is Hal back? Why is Casey Cott (Kevin) not singing when he's the only cast member trained in musical theatre? Why is Cheryl the perfect Carrie? Why does the Black Hood - surprise, he's back - care about ANY of this? And WHY is there a GIANT CHICKEN COSTUME!?!?! We have no answers. Only despair. Thank you, listeners, for your patience, as Evelyn finally gets her wish: She's made Miranda watch her first full episode of Riverdale ***Note: Due to a different recording location and set-up, there are two background noises that we've done our best to minimize, but are present for the first portion of the podcast nonetheless. One is the ambient background menu music, and the other is Evelyn's adorable cat trying to eat dinner. Our apologies.*** Screencaps & other fun stuff can be found on our Twitter: https://twitter.com/moodforchaospod Content Warnings: Alcoholism (brief mention) Emotional abuse/manipulation Fatphobia Murder Pedophilia (brief mention) Religious trauma Music: 'Imps' by Mark Revell
Residential segregation and unequal allocation of resources continues to play a profound role in areas of concentrated poverty, and conversely, high opportunity. Georgetown law professor Sheryll Cashin has spent decades studying housing and how geography is central to American inequality. In “White Space, Black Hood: Opportunity Hoarding and Segregation in the Age of Inequality,” Cashin traces the history of anti-Black residential caste, which she says manifests in three forms: boundary maintenance, opportunity hoarding and stereotype-driven surveillance. She joins to unpack her findings and to share strategies for abolishing state-sanctioned practices that further perpetuate inequities.
Candace and Tom meet with law professor Sheryll Cashin to discuss her new book, White Space, Black Hood: Opportunity Hoarding and Segregation in the Age of Inequality. In her book, Professor Cashin argues that the "ghetto", and all of our ideas about it, performs a political function that reinforces inequality and is used as a basis for further segregation, divestment, and surveillance.
When millions of African Americans moved from the rural south to northern cities, exclusionary zoning and restrictive covenants worked to constrain their space. Over time, these practices evolved into lending discrimination and then into urban renewal projects that displaced Black communities. Georgetown law professor Sheryll Cashin argues that geography is central to the American residential caste system, "The biggest myth in this country is that high opportunity living is earned and that ‘hood' living is the deserved result of bad individual choices. It's government systemic practices that created this landscape, that frankly, we're all ensnared in." Cashin's latest book White Space, Black Hood. Host Cyrus Webb welcomes author Sheryll Cashin to #ConversationsLIVE to discuss her new book WHITE SPACE, BLACK HOOD---and what she hopes readers take away from it.

In the Mood for Chaos: A Riverdale Roasting and Recap Podcast
Now that we've "killed" "the Black Hood" - no one's buying it - Riverdale has returned to commenting on how inequality is bad and we, like, really do live in a society. Groundbreaking. Some insults are tossed out that are wild even for this show, we meet a new cast member who is - you guessed it - a dark and edgy shadow of their comic book counterpart, Polly has chosen the dumbest baby names ever, and Penelope finds her calling. Evelyn takes immense pleasure in watching Miranda frantically try to make deductions, and is just delighted with Sweet Pea's change in wardrobe. Miranda goes off on Jughead and his authorial inspiration for the week, and can't escape Evelyn ominously whispering "it begins". On the bright side, they finally remembered to plug their Twitter on air! For today's episode, Tyrell and Daphne welcome Professor Sheryll Cashin, the Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Law, Civil Rights and Social Justice at Georgetown University. They begin the conversation by discussing Professor Cashin's professional journey from law clerk under Thurgood Marshall to author of five books (32:25). Next, they discuss the motivation behind her most recent book—White Space, Black Hood—which traces the history of anti-Black residential caste (40:00). They also have a conversation about the anti-black processes that reproduce residential segregation (45:40) and concrete steps that policymakers can take to enact racial equity (55:30). They close the episode by discussing her book, The Agitator's Daughter (1:17:05). In conversation with Richard Rothstein Sheryll Cashin's NAACP Image Award–nominated books on racism and inequality include The Failures of Integration, The Agitator's Daughter, and Place, Not Race. The Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Law, Civil Rights and Social Justice at Georgetown University, a contributing editor at Politico, and a member of the Poverty and Race Research Action Council, Cashin formerly worked as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and in the Clinton's White House. White Space, Black Hood, which Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. referred to as ''riveting and beautifully written'' and ''meticulously researched'', uses two decades of data to expose the ways in which the U.S. government fostered inequality through the creation of impoverished Black spaces and affluent white spaces. A distinguished fellow of the Economic Policy Institute and a senior fellow (emeritus) at the Thurgood Marshall Institute of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Richard Rothstein is the author of the bestselling book The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America and is a former national education columnist for The New York Times. You know what this show needed? It wasn't an illegal street race, but they sure added one anyway. Hey, remember how Clifford the Big Red Dad was King of the Drug Dealers? Well, now there's another one...oh, wait, no, scratch that. By the end of the episode it's all wrapped up. At least he's got a stupid name. Betty is DONE with the Black Hood's games...except when she isn't, Archie has another patented "good" idea, Jughead goes to ask his Dad for advice about keeping the peace, and Veronica indirectly causes a car crash. It's great that Skeet Ulrich is back, but Riverdale seems to be setting up the musical episodes early, by getting in a cheeky reference to Les Miserables via poor FP. We are...less than thrilled. Miranda shares some cursed lore, and reaches new decibels of rage in a cry so loud it caused problems with the noise equalizer. Evelyn has a theory about the Black Hood's continued incompetence, and conjures a conversation that changes the course of the show forever. Forget Archie and the gang, what matters now is the NEW star of Riverdale: Hildegarde, the tired receptionist. Studios); Intelligent Sentient? (Drawn and Quarterly); 566 Frames (Fanfare/Borderline); Love and Rockets: New Stories No. 7, Sweatshop, Saint Cole, and Displacement (Fantagraphics); Sculptor and Princess Decomposia and Count Spatula (First Second); Little Nemo: Dream Another Dream (Locust Moon Press); Girl in Dior (NBM); and Meanwhile #1 (Soaring Press).
