Show #569   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 3rd September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Wow a new PATRON signing up as new PARTNER GARETH HAMER! Thank you Gareth that's incredibly generous.   SOUTH KOREA ANNOUNCES NEW EV SUBSIDIES FOR 2020 "In the coming year, the South Korean government will provide the equivalent of around 900 million dollars in subsidies for e-mobility. The money will not only be used to subsidise electric and fuel cell cars, but also the associated infrastructure." says Chris Randall for electrive: "The goal is to increase the number of battery electric vehicles on South Korean roads by 71,000 next year and fuel cell vehicles by 10,000. In concrete terms, BEVs will be subsidised by the state government with 8 million won (approx. 6,600 US dollars) in the coming year, each new FCEV will even be subsidised with 22.5 million won (approx. 18,600 US dollars). The significantly stronger support of the FCEV fits into the strategy of the South Korean government that sees hydrogen as a green and promising economic sector. In January this year, the government announced its intention to have 80,000 fuel cell cars on South Korean roads by 2022."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/02/south-korea-announces-ev-subsidies/   BY 2023, MINI PLANS ADDITIONAL ELECTRIC VEHICLES "It’s hard to argue against the fact that the MINI brand has been extremely successful under BMW’s leadership. Ever since its rebirth in 2000, the MINI brand has grown to become one of the most important premium brands in the world, delivering impressive sales for the BMW Group." according to BMW Blog: "The MINI E was BMW’s first electric car made available to customers, and while it ran only as a pilot in the US and Europe, it paved the way for the BMW i3. Therefore, it’s hard to believe that it took MINI another 8 years to come up with another fully-electric model.  Automobile Magazine reports that by 2023, we should expect three additional MINI electric vehicles. The EVs in question are rumored to be a “super-short-wheelbase MiniMINI, a more compact and prettier replacement for the mainstay three-door version, and a MINI crossover. All three are said to be FWD, use a skateboard-style chassis, and offer a choice of 35- or 50-kWh battery packs."   https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/09/01/report-by-2023-mini-plans-additional-electric-vehicles/   WILL MILLIONS OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES DISRUPT GERMANY'S POWER GRID? "Over the coming decade, Germany's electricity grid will need upgrades to enable it to recharge tens of millions of electric cars. Rather than being worried, experts seem to be looking forward to the technical challenge." says dw.com: "On a quiet suburban residential street in Ostfildern, a town a few miles southeast of Stuttgart, 10 households are participating in an experiment that will help shape the future of e-mobility in Germany. The point of the 18-month experiment is to find out what happens when all the households on a typical German street, all of them on the same electricity circuit, drive electric cars. It's a model of the future. How do e-car recharging patterns typically unfold over the course of a week? When do peak loads occur? What kinds of battery storage solutions might be useful for stabilizing grid supply and demand? A 22-kW peak-capacity EV recharging unit was installed in a wall box at each house, and each household was given an e-car for the test's duration, with five VW e-Golf, two BMW i3, and three Renault Zoe e-cars in the mix. In addition, there's a Tesla Model S 75D, which each household will drive for three weeks."   https://www.dw.com/en/will-millions-of-electric-vehicles-disrupt-germanys-power-grid/a-50258980   THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR THE BMW I8 "This, ladies and gentlemen, is the BMW i8 Ultimate Sophisto Edition – and it makes us really very sad indeed." says TopGear: "The principle source of our sorrow comes from the fact BMW has confirmed the Ultimate Sophisto Edition will be one of the last i8s ever, with production of the hybrid sports car coming to an end for good in April 2020.  This is a real shame. The i8 remains a fantastic car, especially after its mid-life update. With a combined 374bhp from its electric motor and 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine the numbers aren’t huge, but the ride quality and feel are fantastic – plus, it’s just so different to anything else on the market. You’ll also notice a BMW i3S sneaking about in some of the photos above. That too is in the black/copper paint scheme, but for some reason is called the ‘Edition RoadStyle’. There are also no mechanical changes from the standard i3S, so we won’t bore you with any more details.  For now, let’s stick to mourning the impending death of the i8. A carbon-tubbed, hybrid sports car that would do 0-62mph in just over four seconds and still offer 20-25 miles of electric range. Yep, we’ll miss it."   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/beginning-end-bmw-i8   TESLA MODEL 3 TRACK MODE: DRAINED 250 MILES OF RANGE IN 30 MINUTES "When Tesla first announced Track Mode for the Model 3, it appeared to be a pretty big deal. However, with Tesla, some topics stay hot for a long time, there's lots of talk from owners, we receive plenty of information, and CEO Elon Musk speaks to the topic repeatedly on Twitter. Other Tesla announcements seem to come and go rather quickly." reports InsideEVs: "In a recent video by YouTube channel Tesla Driver, we see extensive footage of a Model 3 Performance racing at Castle Combe Circuit in Wiltshire, England. The driver engages Track Mode and powers through a whopping 250 miles of range in a mere 30 minutes. While this sounds like a ton of energy use, it's not really that big of a deal. For ease of comparing, let's say the car used its entire battery capacity in 30 minutes (even though the Model 3 Performance has a range over 300 miles).  People who spend time racing gas cars can tell you that it's not uncommon to get 4 to 8 mpg. Let's say a gas tank holds some 12 to 20 gallons. While this is far from scientific, in the best-case scenario (8 mpg and a 20-gallon tank), you'll be filling up after 160 miles."   https://insideevs.com/news/367599/video-tesla-model-3-track-mode-burns-range/   DEUTSCHE POST SEES INTEREST FROM POTENTIAL PARTNERS FOR EV "Deutsche Post has received expressions of interest from potential partners for StreetScooter, its electric van business, board member Tobias Meyer said on Friday." and reported by Autonews Europe: "The German postal services group has produced 10,000 StreetScooters but is shying away from making large investments in StreetScooter or taking on risks tied to large-scale vehicle production. Deutsche Post has also installed charging over 13,000 posts”.   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/deutsche-post-sees-interest-potential-partners-ev     QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week.   What’s your favourite EV experience, or experience you’d like to have?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 245 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #504   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 18th June 2019. Welcome to a new PRODUCER DAVE GINNANE.   Hello to Richard Graham: "By the way, what would you think about doing a Model 3 delivery day special? i.e follow a Tesla customer on their delivery experience and post delivery first impressions etc. I would volunteer myself but I suspect my M3 might only be delivered July/August so the excitement may have died down by then."   NEW NISSAN LEAFS AVAILABLE IN EUROPE "The latest versions of the Nissan Leaf are now available for purchase in Europe. This includes the longer range Leaf e+, as well as the conventionally updated Leaf. First deliveries have already begun." says electrive: "The Leaf e+ has already marked over 8,000 orders since it’s January reveal. With a 62 kWh battery, provided by AESC, and a 160 kW electric motor. The starting price here goes for €45,000. The basic new Leaf starts at a price of €35,400 and features a 40 kWh battery for 40% less range compared to the larger version. Both vehicles still charge using CHAdeMO with 70 kW standard charge and a 100kW peak. Following the “Rapidgate” charging scandal, the software for the vehicles was undated to ensure longer and more stable battery life."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/18/new-nissan-leafs-available-in-europe/   TESLA’S OWNER-VOLUNTEERS FROM CHINA MOBILIZE TO HELP END-OF-Q2 DELIVERIES "Tesla’s second-quarter deliveries in China are getting a rather unexpected boost, thanks to a number of electric car owners who are volunteering their time to help the company hand over as many vehicles as possible before the end of the month. Tesla is currently attempting to set new delivery records this Q2, and it would take every one of its delivery teams across the globe to dig deep to achieve its goal of beating Q4 2018’s numbers. The fourth quarter, after all, was a time when Tesla delivered more than 90,000 vehicles globally." says Simon at Teslarati: "As could be seen in the efforts of Tesla owners in China, this willingness to help the company is not only true for electric car owners in the United States. Even in a place such as China, where the Model 3 only started deliveries earlier this year, owners are volunteering their time to help out the company. "   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-china-owners-help-model-3-deliveries-q2-2019/   NORWAY UPDATES: SUBARU, MAZDA, & FORD SALES PLUMMET "Norwegian Twitter user Tesla Driver tweeted an article from the daily Norwegian business paper Finansavisen (behind a paywall) that highlighted more bad news for car companies slow to electrify in Norway." according to CleanTechnica: "Subaru sales are down 66% in 2019, Mazda sales are down 45% in the last 3 years, and Ford sales are down 50% in the last 10 years. In case you missed it, last month we reported on layoffs at a leading Mercedes dealer due to its lack of competitive products. Automakers and dealers slow to electrify are suffering. Toyota and Hyundai have stopped selling hydrogen cars in Norway. The manufactures were forced to get loaner cars to the few people who had purchased hydrogen cars, since all the hydrogen fuel stations are closed while the government investigates an explosion at a hydrogen fueling station."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/17/norway-updates-subaru-mazda-ford-sales-plummet-hydrogen-car-sales-frozen-tesla-sales-jump/   GERMANY TO SUPPORT THREE BATTERY CELL ALLIANCES "Germany will support three company alliances with earmarked funds of 1 billion euros for the domestic production of battery cells in an effort to reduce carmakers’ dependence on Asian suppliers, Economy Minister Peter Altmaier told Reuters." says an article today on Reuters UK: "Among the more than 30 companies that applied for state funding at the German Economy Ministry are carmakers Volkswagen and BMW, as well as German battery maker Varta and Swedish battery manufacturing startup Northvolt. France and Germany have already asked the European Commission to approve state subsidies for a cross-border battery cell consortium including carmaker PSA, its German subsidiary Opel and French battery maker Saft."   https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-europe-batteries-germany/germany-to-support-three-battery-cell-alliances-economy-minister-idUKKCN1TJ1LC   2020 MINI COOPER S E ELECTRIC CAR'S REVEAL DATE ANNOUNCED "Although we've pretty much seen the production 2020 Mini Cooper S E electric hatchback, we've been in the dark about when the car, and more importantly its specifications, will officially be revealed. But now the company says we'll see it on July 9, just a few weeks away." write Joel for Autoblog: "We're most anxious for confirmation on performance specifications. In our prototype drive, we learned that the motor is based on the one from the BMW i3S, so it should make about 181 horsepower, just 8 shy of the gas-powered Mini Cooper S. But the range estimate given during the prototype drive was a rather low 120 miles."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/18/2020-mini-cooper-s-e-electric-car-reveal-date/   PORSCHE CEO PRAISES TESLA In USA Today, Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Porsche North America writes: "Tesla has made inroads, but now I believe we are approaching a turning point. In coming years we will see more widespread adoption as volume producers including General Motors, Nissan, and VW join with premium brands like Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche to launch numerous battery-only models. As more Americans experience the instant power and sporty handling that electric cars provide, more will want this new generation of electric vehicles. First, Tesla has proven there is significant demand for cars that combine sustainability with performance and design. Last year, the Model 3 outsold any other premium sedan in the U.S. We know that American consumers embrace new technology, especially if it delivers a new experience. And once a technology catches on, consumers respond well to expanded choice as competitors enter the field. Just look at how many models of SUV you can buy today, or the proliferation of smartphones since Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007.”   POLESTAR 1 PROTOTYPE REVIEW "The Polestar hybrid set-up with the limited lifespan is based on a 2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged, supercharged petrol engine. On its own it produces 304bhp – although an integrated starter-generator adds a useful extra 67bhp and tries its hardest to improve response." says evo when reviewing the Polestar 1: "Then at the rear, there’s a pair of electric motors, delivering four-wheel drive and another 228bhp again. The final tally? Some 599bhp. The powertrain can operate in a number of modes, including that pure-electric focus, a hybrid setting where the car manages the mix and focuses on efficiency, and a performance configuration that uses all available power sources. The system can also top up the battery while on the move, allowing you to build up enough charge during a long journey for zero-emissions running at your destination."   https://www.evo.co.uk/polestar/22796/polestar-1-prototype-review-a-hybrid-alternative-to-the-bentley-continental-gt   LEVC REVEALS NEW RANGE-EXTENDED LIGHT COMMERCIAL VAN LEVC’s new commercial vehicle, a zero-emission capable light van, draws on more than 70 years of knowledge from the same company that manufactures the world’s only purpose-built range extended electric taxi. Based on the same architecture and proven e-City range extender technology as LEVC’s TX taxi, of which there are now just under 2,000 on the roads – the vast majority in London – this second vehicle from LEVC will give operators and drivers huge amounts of flexibility with an electric range of 80 miles and a combined petrol and EV range of 377 miles. Targeting those who travel around 100 miles a day, LEVC’s LCV will offer ‘distribution to door’ – not just last mile – providing the link between out of town depots and city centres, capable of collecting goods outside of a major city in range extender mode, before switching to EV mode in an Ultra-Low Emissions Zone. This is currently a sector of the market dominated by one tonne medium size diesel vans.   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube…   What’s the best way to spread the word about EVs?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 223 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. The massive vessel is estimated to be carrying around 3,000 Model 3, which are expected to start an electric disruption in Europe’s passenger car market. At the same time, the arrival of the highly-anticipated sedan also means that deliveries to reservation holders in the region are about to begin. Soon, social media posts from the Tesla community revealed that the first Model 3 deliveries in Europe were already underway. That said, it did not take long before Tesla became unable to deliver as many vehicles as they estimated." On Wednesday, Elon Musk took to Twitter to apologize for the delivery delay in Europe." elonmusk: "Sorry, many unexpected challenges with cars coming through Zeebrugge first time. Cars will start moving out in volume tomorrow." Look, it's a three year wait, another day is fine. People just like to have a moan online because they got bumped by a day. Also this was a self-made problem. Tesla brought forward the delivery dates, some by quite a way, and then had to delay by a day causing disappointment. In on a way Tesla could and we love them for it.   Meanwhile Kyle Field at CleanTechnica was one of the first to pick up on a Tweet from the first owner to get his car: "The first European customer has taken delivery of his Tesla Model 3 today after what felt like an endless stream of delays since it was first announced nearly 3 years ago. Fred is from Oldenzaal in the Netherlands and has been a long-time supporter of Tesla, even going so far as to travel to the Tesla “mothership” at its automotive factory in Fremont, California, to lobby for the Netherlands. Opening up its higher end configurations of the Tesla Model 3 to European and Chinese customers allows the company to continue building higher margin vehicles as it puts the finishing touches on the Standard Range vehicle."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-logistical-challenges-europe-deliveries/   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/07/the-first-european-customer-takes-delivery-of-a-tesla-model-3/   GM ELECTRIC VEHICLES COULD BE PROFITABLE EARLY NEXT DECADE, SAYS CEO "Incentives, credits, and compliance schemes can only get the electric vehicle market so far. The real test of its success will be when large, established automakers can get to a point when they can call them profitable." says Green Car Reprts: "On Wednesday, on a call with analysts to discuss the company’s fourth-quarter 2018 financial results, GM CEO Mary Barra said that’s a distinction could come in the early 2020s.Barra reiterated yesterday that GM believes in an all-EV future, and noted that the company is being repositioned “from one that was trying to be all things to all people in all markets to a very strategic, agile, and profitable company.”"   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121379_gm-electric-vehicles-could-be-profitable-early-next-decade-says-ceo   ARCIMOTO STARTS TAKING ORDERS FOR ITS THREE-WHEELED EV "Arcimoto has started taking orders for its three-wheeled electric vehicle. The Fun Utility Vehicle (FUV) Evergreen Edition will set you back $19,900 before tax credits and rebates, which is a far cry from Arcimoto's target of $11,900, though it aims to push down the price over time." reports Engadget: "Arcimoto plans to deliver 100 Evergreens by the end of June in Oregon, California and Washington. It will later expand delivery to other states, and hopes to fulfill all US pre-orders (more than 3,000 of them) by the end of June next year. It's requiring a non-refundable $5,000 deposit from anyone who orders one now. The Evergreen offers a 75 mph top speed and a range of 100 miles of city driving on a single charge"   https://www.engadget.com/2019/02/07/arcimoto-fuv-evergreen-edition-orders-open/   KIA NIRO EV ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SELLS OUT IN UK: NEW DELIVERIES DELAYED "The number of e-Niro allocated to particular markets is limited while deliveries could be significantly delayed, according to the latest news In the UK, for example, the initial batch of 900 e-Niro was ordered within several weeks and customers probably will need to wait until the end of the year to order some from another batch (probably for delivery in 2020)." accrding to Mark Kane for InsideEVs. AutoExpress said: "“Deliveries for the new Kia e-Niro were supposed to commence in April. However, as a result of the e-Niro’s popularity and the production bottleneck, buyers who managed to snag one of the initial 900-model run may have to wait until the end of 2019 before taking delivery. John Hargreaves, Kia’s head of fleet and remarketing, said the battery pack supply chain issue is likely to remain “a restraining factor for at least another 12 to 18 months.”"   https://insideevs.com/kia-niro-ev-e-niro-sold-out-uk/   KIA STUDY REVEALS FLEETS READY FOR EV TIPPING POINT Meanwhile, and you really couldn't make this up: "Demand for electric vehicles is reaching a tipping point for fleets, according to a new study by Kia. Furthermore, it seems as if public perspectives are also having a huge impact on fleet decisions, with 71 per cent of respondents saying that their organisation is nervous about purchasing a petrol or diesel car that isn’t EV/PHEV up five percent from the previous report."   https://fleetworld.co.uk/kia-study-reveals-fleets-ready-for-ev-tipping-point/   DRIVENOW TO BOOST ELECTRIC CAR SHARING FLEET "Car sharing firm Drivenow has announced that 130 new BMW i3 electric vehicles (EVs) will be joining its London fleet. The company, owned by BMW Group, says the new i3s will join 50 older examples of the model until the latter are phased out in April." according to Business Car: "Drivenow says its aim is to have a fleet that is 80% electric by 2025. The new i3s - which offer a 160-mile driving range between charges - will take the company's total current fleet to 720 vehicles, operating in nine London boroughs: Barnet, Brent, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Westminster. The lack of camouflage suggests that the market launch is close. It’s a smart move for the German manufacturer, as BMW 530e iPerformance is already the best-selling plug-in hybrid model for the brand."   https://insideevs.com/bmw-530e-touring-phev-spied/   BMW I7 ELECTRIC WITH RANGE OF NEARLY 400 MILES IN THE WORKS And also: "One of the new all-electric models in BMW‘s pipeline is the BMW i7. That’s according to BMWBlog’s sources in Munich. There is no official announcement about the i7. However, at least the trademarks from i1 up to i9 were registered in 2012 and then renewed in 2018. It’s expected that the i7 could be an all-electric version of the next generation 7-Series. Furthermore, it’s believed that it will get an electric range of up to 600 km (373 miles)."     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. BMW’s “i” vehicles are more than just cars, they’re rolling automotive think tanks with electrification and carbon fiber passenger cells. For 2018, the i3 gets a little sportier with the i3s model that adds a little more power and cornering fun. Tom Voelk checks this avant-garde four-seater out to see if it’s worth the $58,695 (before tax incentives) price tag.

Tuesday 1st May 2018. FIRST DRIVE: BMW i8 ROADSTER Both of BMW i Series cars are unique in terms of having nothing obvious to compare them to. And when I say both maybe I should say three – as the BMW i3S is not a thing, being lower, wider and with a bit more squirty. And if I’m going that, we should four models, because the BMW Roadster in i8 form is an updated car with a missing roof, for full wind-in-you-hair / bald patch driving. As first seen at the LA Motor Show in 2017 we now know what it’s like behind the wheel. It’s interesting when a slew of articles all drop into my Google Alerts inbox at the same time, it normally means a car maker has had an embargo on magazines running their reviews before a certain date. And so it was yesterday with the i8 Roaster. So let’s take a look my three favourite reviews I’ve read, and picked out the highlights for you: BMW BLOG: “The three-cylinder, 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine is untouched, mated to an electric motor and six-speed automatic gearbox, powering the rear wheels. While an electric motor powers the front wheels, thus giving it real-time torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. The capacity of the lithium-ion battery has been increased, now at 34 ampere-hours instead of 20, and gross energy capacity now 11.6 kWh, up from 7.1. This permits an increased electric-only driving range up from 20 to 33 miles.” AutoExpress: “In the four years since BMW launched its i8 Coupe, the company has sold 13,000 examples of the carbon-tub, petrol-electric hybrid. That improved battery range is instantly noticeable, too. Whereas in the original Coupe the electric motor could be easily side-lined by the turbocharged petrol engine, now the electrified elements of the powertrain are far more willing and able to take on longer and quicker driving duties” EVO: “Away from the battery cell improvements, the big technological change to the i8 Roadster is the one made to the car’s structure in turning it from a coupe to a convertible. With the roof down the electric motors that is all but mute in the coupe gains a voice – admittedly a bit of a whiny voice, but if you’re a sci-fi fan you’ll probably think you’re an extra in Tron as the sound intensifies as speeds increase. If you’ve ever been to a Formula E race (honestly, give one a go) it’s not far off the noise the single-seaters make when accelerating out of slower corners. Talking of which, another benefit of the larger-capacity battery cells is that the i8 Roadster will now happily drive along under electric power alone at speeds up to 75mph.” So there you have it. Want one? That will be £125,000 please. I won’t do the conversion to US$ because I always mess up the taxes and VAT. But you get the idea, you need to be making bank to pop down BMW and buy one. You could have a Jag F-Type for seven grand less, or a Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster for a mere £111,000, but why be cheap. Go big and get a proper fast EV hybrid.   http://www.bmwblog.com/2018/04/29/first-drive-bmw-i8-roadster-its-all-about-the-journey/   http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/i8/103352/new-2018-bmw-i8-roadster-review   http://www.evo.co.uk/bmw/bmw-i8-roadster/21184/bmw-i8-roadster-review-new-open-top-hybrid-sports-car   TESLA MODEL 3 ACCELERATION SHOWCASED IN HIGH-SPEED AUTOBAHN SPRINT   “A Tesla enthusiast from Germany has taken the Model 3 to the Autobahn to observe the acceleration and high-speed performance of the compact electric car" report Teslarati. The top speed reached was 130mph and of course done legally as you can on certain stretches of the German roads. It was Tesla Marcus who live streamed it over the weekend. He observed the acceleration was not quite on par with Model S. But hey, neither is the price! I'll put a link to the Teslarati article in the show notes as it's only fair to send traffic to them but they link through to the video. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-acceleration-high-speed-autobahn/   SF MOTORS BRINGING NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLE R&D FACILITY TO SILICON VALLEY There’s nothing better than seeing announcements turn into reality, and new companies making a go of the thing Elon says nobody should ever try – launch a new automotive company. One of those is SF Motors and today they announced the opening of a new R&D facility in McCarthy Creekside, California. Do any of our California listeners know it? The company currently has R&D facilities in Santa Clara, Calif.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; and Stuttgart, Germany. The company CTO, Yifan Tang, will oversee R&D and low volume manufacturing at the 130,000 sq/ft facility. “Adding to our existing R&D labs, this new facility will conduct extensive design validation testing and low-volume manufacturing necessary to ensure smooth transition to mass production of our batteries and electric powertrains, which are key components of our vehicles,” says Tang. “Drawing on our global business model and decades of manufacturing experience, locating this facility near our Silicon Valley headquarters will strategically ensure quality and efficiency as we prepare to bring our intelligent EVs to market.” A reminder they’re targeting 200,000 units per year but I don’t know when, in context, the established Model S and Model X lines will do around 60,000 units each per year, and obviously dwarfed by Model 3. https://ngtnews.com/sf-motors-bringing-new-electric-vehicle-rd-facility-to-silicon-valley   UK INSTAVOLT CHARGING NETWORK FREE IN MAY In the UK electric vehicle (EV) charging company InstaVolt is making its rapid charging stations completely free to use for the entire month of May as a celebration of the company’s 100th charger going live. InstaVolt’s charging stations are available to use on a pay-as-you-go basis, with no subscription or membership required.  Drivers simply tap their contactless credit or debit card, charge up and go. There’s no minimum spend and no connection fee.  This month, start your charge as normal by tapping a card, but you won’t be billed. And it’s unlimited. “The UK needs a solid public charging infrastructure and we’re working at a rate of knots to make that a reality” said InstaVolt CEO Tim Payne. “We’re switching on new rapid charging stations every week and we’re thrilled to have hit this important milestone of 100. It’s our pleasure to share that celebration with EV drivers across the UK and offer them free charging throughout the month of May.”   PSA'S DS BRAND WILL ELECTRIFY THE PREMIUM SECTOR PSA Group's premium DS brand said that all its new models from 2025 will have only full-electric or hybrid drivetrains, and that it will present its first battery electric vehicle at the Paris auto show in October. “Our ambition is very clear: For DS to be among the global leaders in electrified cars in its market," DS CEO Yves Bonnefont said in a press release yesterday. " PSA will offer 40 electrified models across its five brands -- Peugeot, Citroen, Opel, Vauxhall and DS -- worldwide by 2025, CEO Carlos Tavares told the Automotive News World Congressat the start of this year. I’ve added a link to that press release on the show notes. Another big announcement, and time for another reality check, 7 years is a lifetime away. 7 years ago the world was totally different, and 7 years before than in 2004, there was no such thing as YouTube or Twitter, and Mark Zuckerberg was in his dorm room at Harvard writing code for The FaceMash, the website that as a precursor to TheFacebook. So yes, 2025 is a long way off. http://int-media.dsautomobiles.com/en/all-future-ds-models-will-be-exclusively-electrified-versions   U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ANNOUNCES $19 MILLION FOR ADVANCED BATTERY AND ELECTRIFICATION RESEARCH Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $19 million to support twelve new cost-shared research projects focused on batteries and vehicle electrification technologies to enable extreme fast charging. The projects announced today will help advance DOE’s research on batteries and electrification aimed at reducing battery pack cost to under $100 per kilowatt-hour, increasing range to over 300 miles, and charging in under 15 minutes or less by 2028. All investment is welcome, who wouldn’t love $19m, but split between 12 projects? We'll hear tomorrow how much Tesla lost in Q1, if it's in the ball park of USD$700m it would seem OK, so if you want to see what's really at the sharp end of battery R&D, you might need to spend a bit more. https://www.energy.gov/articles/department-energy-announces-19-million-advanced-battery-and-electrification-research-enable   MERCEDES-BENZ KILLS ITS ‘TESLA POWERWALL KILLER’ That's a great headline from Electrek. And it's sadly true, whenever anyone launches a product up against Tesla, whether it's in the car or energy space, the headline writers will call it a Tesla killer. I did it without realising a couple of months back talking about the Mercedes S-Class electric equivalent, the EQS. And so often other companies look at Tesla, and say anything you can do, we can do better. Except, they can’t. Mercedes Benz had their own version of the Tesla Powerwall, selling solar and battery packages alongside Vivent. But GreenTechMedia got a statement saying: "It’s not necessary to have a car battery at home: they don’t move, they don’t freeze. It’s overdesigned." Maybe that's true, but it was also woeful compared to the Powerwall. The Merc modular system was 2.5kWh at the smallest capacity, starting at $5,000. It was too much compared to the dollar cost per kWh of Tesla. https://electrek.co/2018/04/30/mercedes-benz-kills-tesla-powerwall-killer-energy-storage-device/   BLOCKCHAIN COULD REVOLUTIONISE EV CHARGING Question: do you understand Blockchain? Properly understand it? No me neither. "Using blockchain technology, peer-to-peer networks have established marketplaces to connect EV drivers so they can share charging stations with each other" says EnergyFuse: "Residential and commercial EV owners can make a profit by allowing others to access their chargers, and drivers have the flexibility to charge their vehicles at different locations. Companies in banking, finance, insurance, oil trading, and utilities have been moving to blockchains—decentralized distributed ledgers that record online transactions—to improve efficiencies" “It’s Airbnb for EV charging,” Preston Roper, COO of eMotorWerks, told The Fuse. eMotorWerks, a California-based firm that focuses on EV charging technologies, was the first company in the United States to establish a peer-to-peer network in its partnership with Share&Charge. I get how that works, but I still don't get how the blockchain makes this possible. Do I sounds like those people who first saw the internet in the 90s and said 'what IS it'?  http://energyfuse.org/blockchain-electric-vehicle-charging/   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
