This week on the podcast, our guest is Stephen Poloz, former Governor of the Bank of Canada, Author, Special Advisor at Osler, and recently appointed by Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to lead a working group to explore how to catalyze greater domestic investments by Canada's pension funds. This is Stephen's second appearance on the podcast. The first was in 2022 after he released his book The Next Age of Uncertainty. Here are some of the questions Jackie and Peter asked Stephen: What precipitated the thesis that Canadian pensioners are better off with more investment in Canada? What can you say about the pension investment working group, the deliverable you are working towards, and the potential timing? Why has inflation been so persistent in Canada and globally? What are your expectations for Canadian interest rate announcements in the future? Carolyn Rogers, senior deputy governor of the Bank of Canada, recently said in a speech, it's time to “break the glass” and respond to Canada's productivity “emergency” – do you agree that productivity is an emergency? How important is free trade with the United States for Canada's economy? What are your thoughts on the Canadian government committing tens of billions of dollars to support the EV sector in Canada? Are you concerned about Canada's ongoing deficit budgets and growing debt levels? India's heavy industries ministry wants to extend subsidies for electric vehicles under the FAME III scheme for five years. It also wants a higher allocation to support the growth of electric and alternate fuel vehicles. But the finance ministry is against it. It has reportedly questioned the rationale behind the proposal, saying major electric two-wheeler makers have benefitted the most from FAME I and II schemes and they don't need further support from the government. So should the EV subsidies continue? According to Mckinsey, electric two-wheelers are expected to account for 60 to 70% of new sales in India by 2030. But rural demand is not growing at a fast clip as expected. While sales of two-wheelers have picked up, signs of distress are still visible in the rural belt. So will the upcoming Diwali lift the spirits of people in villages? After Diwali, let us now turn our focus to another festival. The elections -- also known as festival of democracy -- begin today with voting in Chhattisgarh and Mizoram. Usually, state elections are a non-event for the markets. But, are the markets viewing the current elections the same way? In our next report, Puneet Wadhwa speaks to market experts on what Dalal Street is pricing in? And what should be your investment strategy ahead of the polls? While soaring benchmark indices may lift your spirit ahead of festivals, a look outside the window may dampen it if you are in north India. Financial capital's Mumbai's AQI too entered the red zone on Monday. But what is AQI? We explain it for you in this episode of the podcast.

Singapore stocks were little changed today, amid a mixed performance in global markets. In early trade, the Straits Times Index (STI) dropped 0.01 per cent to 3,215.09 points after 25.7 million securities changed hands in the broader market. In terms of companies to watch, we do have Nio, after the Chinese electric vehicle maker said yesterday that it had “no reportable capital raising activity”. This was in response to media reports that the company is considering raising around US$3 billion in capital from investors. Elsewhere from TikTok shopping facing headwinds in Indonesia to JPMorgan Chase's CEO comments of a worse-case scenario of rates hitting 7 per cent in the US, more corporate and international headlines remain in focus. On Market View, Drive Time's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian unpacked these developments with Toby Gresham, Investment Counselor Team Lead, Citi Private Bank.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Victorian government has cooked up a sneaky Appeasement Burger on EVs - apparently there’s going to be subsidies now. And taxes. Which is of course intelligence-insulting and absurd. And don’t the lobby groups just love it? PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=54778969You can now support these livestreams on Patreon. Any support is sincerely appreciated. It must seem strange to see a jurisdiction this backward, connected to the Internet. But I assure you I’m not making this up. The EV tax is still in, of course, but apparently there are also going to be EV subsidies now. So that’s not, like, robbing Peter to pay Peter, is it? It’s actually just so some minister can whip out the subsidies in press conferences to counter EV tax criticism from the dumb news media. There will be 20,000 subsidies - which sound like a lot, but isn’t. $3000 apiece for EVs costing less than $69,000 as part of a $100 million so-called ‘EV encouragement package’. It’s pathetic. It’s less than getting the GST back. And here’s where the lobbyists come in. Let’s do the Electric Vehicle Council, a credible-sounding name that really just represents a bunch of big businesses gagging to sell EVs and EV-related goods and services, like electricity and chargers, to you, in the public. “Only 0.1 per cent of Victorian cars are currently electric. The subsidies announced could help drive that figure up sharply and put a huge dent in Victoria's carbon emissions.” That's 20,000 EVs. According to the national Survey of Motor Vehicle Use, from Ausstats, for the 12 months to June 30, 2020, there are four million passenger vehicles in Vicwegia, roughly. This 'reduction' of about 450 parts per million (of Vicwegia’s CO2 production) means for every one tonne of CO2 emitted, these subsidies represent (at best) the reduction of 450 grams. It's insignificant.

Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz.Today we lead with news of a respite in global tensions.Wall Street is +½% higher today on the general news that trade tensions seem to be easing, and Middle East political tensions are as well. Overnight, European equities slipped on most exchanges, except London - a rare reversal.Yesterday, Asian equity markets were quite bullish. Shanghai was up +0.8%, Hong Kong was up +1.1% and Tokyo was up +0.5%. The Aussie equity market slipped -0.4% while the NZX50 was virtually unchanged. In Canada, businesses there are slightly more optimistic heading into 2020. Like consumers, they expect inflation will remain low. And they still expect to invest and hire at a similar rate to 2019.In China, even though it is the largest car market in the world selling more than 26 mln vehicles per year, they expect sales will decline -2% in 2020. Generous state subsidies for non-petrol/diesel vehicles will continue. This is having a flow-on impact as China's steel manufacturers continue output at record levels even as key customers are buying less. Beijing is alarmed at the rising losses. A big shakeout is coming. Australia is unlikely to ship as much iron ore in 2020 as it did in 2019. [Advert]And here is a message from our friends at Hatch. With Hatch, anyone can invest in the US share markets.Billionaire Warren Buffett says investors should stick to areas they know, so it’s no surprise that Kiwis are backing technology companies through our investing platform. Companies like Nvidia, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Disney and Tesla regularly feature as our most popular shares. Visit www.hatch.as/investing to buy any of these US-listed shares and learn more. In the Philippines, the Mt Taal volcanic eruption, while initially dramatic, is now expected to burst into a huge event soon. Large numbers of people are being evacuated. The fear is that it could have wide regional climate impacts. In Australia, the bush fire emergencies have changed the political views on climate change, and they are likely to get embedded following their Royal Commission inquiry into the disaster. Fossil-fuel-energy jobs will become the flash-point.And the wider financial markets are likely to be impacted, according to Standard & Poors. They said, "The recent bush fires will have a flow-on effect on local employment in industries such as tourism and agriculture, which could lead to debt-serviceability pressures for affected borrowers."The UST 10yr yield is now up to 1.84% and a rise of +2 bps overnight. Gold will start today down -US$11 at US$1,551/oz.US oil prices are lower again today now just over US$58.50/bbl and the Brent benchmark is down too at US$64.50/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is unchanged at 66.3 USc. On the cross rates we are slightly softer at 96 AUc. Against the euro we are at 59.6 euro cents. That puts our TWI-5 at 71.5. Beijing is still letting the yuan strengthen deliberately against the US dollar and its now back to levels we last saw in August 2019. It seems to be part of the Phase One trade deal.Bitcoin is also unchanged since this time yesterday at US$8,096. Show #569 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 3rd September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Wow a new PATRON signing up as new PARTNER GARETH HAMER! Thank you Gareth that's incredibly generous. SOUTH KOREA ANNOUNCES NEW EV SUBSIDIES FOR 2020 "In the coming year, the South Korean government will provide the equivalent of around 900 million dollars in subsidies for e-mobility. The money will not only be used to subsidise electric and fuel cell cars, but also the associated infrastructure." says Chris Randall for electrive: "The goal is to increase the number of battery electric vehicles on South Korean roads by 71,000 next year and fuel cell vehicles by 10,000. In concrete terms, BEVs will be subsidised by the state government with 8 million won (approx. 6,600 US dollars) in the coming year, each new FCEV will even be subsidised with 22.5 million won (approx. 18,600 US dollars). The significantly stronger support of the FCEV fits into the strategy of the South Korean government that sees hydrogen as a green and promising economic sector. In January this year, the government announced its intention to have 80,000 fuel cell cars on South Korean roads by 2022." https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/02/south-korea-announces-ev-subsidies/ BY 2023, MINI PLANS ADDITIONAL ELECTRIC VEHICLES "It’s hard to argue against the fact that the MINI brand has been extremely successful under BMW’s leadership. Ever since its rebirth in 2000, the MINI brand has grown to become one of the most important premium brands in the world, delivering impressive sales for the BMW Group." according to BMW Blog: "The MINI E was BMW’s first electric car made available to customers, and while it ran only as a pilot in the US and Europe, it paved the way for the BMW i3. Therefore, it’s hard to believe that it took MINI another 8 years to come up with another fully-electric model. Automobile Magazine reports that by 2023, we should expect three additional MINI electric vehicles. The EVs in question are rumored to be a “super-short-wheelbase MiniMINI, a more compact and prettier replacement for the mainstay three-door version, and a MINI crossover. All three are said to be FWD, use a skateboard-style chassis, and offer a choice of 35- or 50-kWh battery packs." https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/09/01/report-by-2023-mini-plans-additional-electric-vehicles/ WILL MILLIONS OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES DISRUPT GERMANY'S POWER GRID? "Over the coming decade, Germany's electricity grid will need upgrades to enable it to recharge tens of millions of electric cars. Rather than being worried, experts seem to be looking forward to the technical challenge." says dw.com: "On a quiet suburban residential street in Ostfildern, a town a few miles southeast of Stuttgart, 10 households are participating in an experiment that will help shape the future of e-mobility in Germany. The point of the 18-month experiment is to find out what happens when all the households on a typical German street, all of them on the same electricity circuit, drive electric cars. It's a model of the future. How do e-car recharging patterns typically unfold over the course of a week? When do peak loads occur? What kinds of battery storage solutions might be useful for stabilizing grid supply and demand? A 22-kW peak-capacity EV recharging unit was installed in a wall box at each house, and each household was given an e-car for the test's duration, with five VW e-Golf, two BMW i3, and three Renault Zoe e-cars in the mix. In addition, there's a Tesla Model S 75D, which each household will drive for three weeks." https://www.dw.com/en/will-millions-of-electric-vehicles-disrupt-germanys-power-grid/a-50258980 THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR THE BMW I8 "This, ladies and gentlemen, is the BMW i8 Ultimate Sophisto Edition – and it makes us really very sad indeed." says TopGear: "The principle source of our sorrow comes from the fact BMW has confirmed the Ultimate Sophisto Edition will be one of the last i8s ever, with production of the hybrid sports car coming to an end for good in April 2020. This is a real shame. The i8 remains a fantastic car, especially after its mid-life update. With a combined 374bhp from its electric motor and 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine the numbers aren’t huge, but the ride quality and feel are fantastic – plus, it’s just so different to anything else on the market. You’ll also notice a BMW i3S sneaking about in some of the photos above. That too is in the black/copper paint scheme, but for some reason is called the ‘Edition RoadStyle’. There are also no mechanical changes from the standard i3S, so we won’t bore you with any more details. For now, let’s stick to mourning the impending death of the i8. A carbon-tubbed, hybrid sports car that would do 0-62mph in just over four seconds and still offer 20-25 miles of electric range. Yep, we’ll miss it." https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/beginning-end-bmw-i8 TESLA MODEL 3 TRACK MODE: DRAINED 250 MILES OF RANGE IN 30 MINUTES "When Tesla first announced Track Mode for the Model 3, it appeared to be a pretty big deal. However, with Tesla, some topics stay hot for a long time, there's lots of talk from owners, we receive plenty of information, and CEO Elon Musk speaks to the topic repeatedly on Twitter. Other Tesla announcements seem to come and go rather quickly." reports InsideEVs: "In a recent video by YouTube channel Tesla Driver, we see extensive footage of a Model 3 Performance racing at Castle Combe Circuit in Wiltshire, England. The driver engages Track Mode and powers through a whopping 250 miles of range in a mere 30 minutes. While this sounds like a ton of energy use, it's not really that big of a deal. For ease of comparing, let's say the car used its entire battery capacity in 30 minutes (even though the Model 3 Performance has a range over 300 miles). People who spend time racing gas cars can tell you that it's not uncommon to get 4 to 8 mpg. Let's say a gas tank holds some 12 to 20 gallons. While this is far from scientific, in the best-case scenario (8 mpg and a 20-gallon tank), you'll be filling up after 160 miles." https://insideevs.com/news/367599/video-tesla-model-3-track-mode-burns-range/ DEUTSCHE POST SEES INTEREST FROM POTENTIAL PARTNERS FOR EV "Deutsche Post has received expressions of interest from potential partners for StreetScooter, its electric van business, board member Tobias Meyer said on Friday." and reported by Autonews Europe: "The German postal services group has produced 10,000 StreetScooters but is shying away from making large investments in StreetScooter or taking on risks tied to large-scale vehicle production. Deutsche Post has also installed charging over 13,000 posts”. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/deutsche-post-sees-interest-potential-partners-ev QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. China is offering more generous subsidies to customers that buy EVs, and it’s not just the central government offering them. One of the worlds largest oil and gas companies says diesel will be the number 1 fuel by 2020. Cadillac has really started the year with a bang. But the sales gain is coming exclusively from two new models. All that and more, plus we take a walk around the exterior of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the head of Jeep design.
A new study says that batteries in the Nissan LEAF degrade faster in hot climates. The Congressional Budget Office says that federal subsidies for manufacturing and purchasing EVs will cost taxpayers around 7.5 billion dollars through 2019. Audi revealed the 2013 S3 which gets a walloping 300 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. All that and more, plus a preview of Autoline This Week about whether using ethanol in gasoline hurts our food supply.
