It's a sad day - our last edition of the Behind the Wheel Podcast. After ten years we've decided to focus on other areas of the business and that means our beloved podcast has to come to an end. Catch this last edition to hear some highlights over the past decade, including a look back at the very first edition of the show! From all of us here at Behind the Wheel thank you to our loyal listeners, it has been a great ride.
Toyota won the 24 hour Le Mans race for the first time last weekend. That’s pretty good news. What’s better is they’ve committed to building a road going version of the car that won the race. It’ll be a hypercar capable of beating promised hypercars from Mercedes Benz and Aston Martin. James Lang from Toyota will join us with details. BMW have launched a raft of new models recently. Lenore Fletcher will be on the phone with news on the new X5, an all new Z4 and a stunning new 8 Series. The Electric Vehicle council released their State of Electric Vehicle Report for Australia. It won’t surprise many of you that Australia is lagging behind the rest of the world. Behyad Jafari, CEO of the EV Council breaks it down for us. Joel Helmes has been driving a four-cylinder version of the Kia Stinger. Is it better then the twin turbo V6, or is there an even better Kia on the market? Simon Lai has had the keys to a funky new SUV - Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. It kind of looks like him, so we expect he'll want to buy one. We'll find out if that's true. Another enormous edition of Behind the Wheel… There’s been news from Porsche - their Mission E Electric Concept Car finally has been confirmed as a production car & it has a name. There's a new 911 Speedster concept too, Chris Jordan from Porsche will call in with all the details. Kia has unveiled an electric car called the Niro in Seoul. With a range of 400km +, wrapped in a body that looks like the current day Sportage, there's a lot to be excited about. Kevin Hepworth, Marketing Manager from Kia Australia has all the details for us. Joel Helmes has been driving an enormous van. More enormous than you could ever imagine. You'll need to tune in to find out how big. Simon has had the keys to the Alfa Romeo Guilia. It hasn't broken down once, and apparently its really nice. We'll find out why he thinks it's so good. Australia has had its first compulsory car recall due to the ongoing saga that is the Takata Airbag scandal. There are serious problems with these dangerous airbags. The ACCC are overseeing the recall that will involve anywhere up to one in five cars on Australian roads. Rod Simms, Chairman of the ACCC, joins us with details on what is wrong with the airbags, how many will be replaced, how to figure out if you're affected and what impact it might have on the Australian car market. Then after the serious stuff, we’ll take you driving at a frenetic pace in the Nürburgring conquering Honda Civic Type-R. Ford have been tweaking Australia’s most popular sports car - the Mustang. Damion Smy from Ford joins us with details on the what’s new for 2018. Chris Jordan from Porsche joins us on the show with details on the preparations - and he’s got a great story out of London that involves $10 million worth of gold bullion and three new Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo’s. Andrew Fraser - Nationals Member for Coffs Harbour, is pushing for driver education to be taught in schools for kids as young as twelve. It’s based on a model from CAMS. We’ll chat to Andrew and get the nuts and bolts of the plan. Joel Helmes has been at the Australian launch of the new Haval H9 – a seven-seat 4x4 that, on paper at least, shows a lot of promise. We’ll get all the details on how it drives and how much it costs. Victoria Police are in the process of renewing their fleet - starting with the Divy Vans. Their choice of vehicle is interesting and nowhere near as exciting as the car that will be replacing the Highway Patrol Commodores. Frank Melilli, Manager of the Victoria Police Transport Branch, has all the inside goss. The AAA (Automobile Association of Australia) is making a just call for the removal of tariffs on cars. Originally put in place to protect Australia's car manufacturing industry, obviously there's now no need to pay for an industry that doesn't exist. The AAA also think there could be another huge benefit other than the cost savings motorists would experience. Tune in the CEO Michael Bradley to hear their ideas. Lamborghini now have a new rear-while drive version of the Huracan available to Australian supercar buyers with the local arrival of the new Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2. Launched today at an event in Sydney, the new offering is essentially the same as the AWD Huracan, though it is significantly cheaper and is designed to be a lot more fun, according to Lamborghini. With a different weight balance and all the 426kW and 530Nm going to the real wheels, it goes without saying that the Huracan LP 580-2 is clearly aimed at Lamborghini drivers who like oversteer and a little 'drifting'. Also boasting more aggressive front and rear bumpers and unique alloy wheel designs, prices on the road in NSW start from $415,000 for the 2WD Huracan, that's a significant $50,000 less than the traditional AWD variant. Iveco Trucks get set to reach more customers in 2016. Just give us a go, that’s the message from Iveco Australia Marketing Manager Darren Swenson. Speaking at the launch of Iveco’s 2016 Australian campaign, Mr Swenson, who started with Iveco last year, says no other truck brands caters as well to the needs of drivers than Iveco, he says truck buyers just need to take a test drive to find out why. Australians paying thousands of dollars in toll fees and charges. If the rising cost of accessing tollways wasn’t already putting enough squeeze on Australian motorists, new reports say we are also paying thousands of dollars in extra fees and charges for late payments. The team over at The Big Smoke report that one motorist was even slapped with a $50,000 fine for late toll payments and extra fees, some motorists have even been threatened with prison sentences. Toll fines are getting out of control and its state governments that are reaping the benefits. We caught up with The Big Smoke founder, Alex Tselios, to find out more about the issue and how we are being stung by extra fees and charges every year by the tollway operators and state governments.

Car customizing expert Dave Kindig joins us for a chat. Dave Kindig has been labelled a miracle worker and if you look at some of the amazing projects that have left the doors of his business, we reckon you would have to agree. Dave has been building custom cars for twenty years and is the owner and operator of Kindig-It Design, a business that turns out one-of-a-kind vehicles for a wide range of customers, some, even quite famous! With a lifetime of experience in automobile restoration under his belt, master car restorer Wayne Carini has a resume that includes work on rare car collections owned by the likes of David Letterman and Ivan Lendl. Wayne's passion for cars started when he was a child, working alongside his father on such classics as Duesenbergs, Lincolns, Packards and Ford Model As. Then, at just 9 years of age, he experienced a life altering event: he went for a ride in his first Ferrari. Wayne was instantly bitten by the Ferrari bug and hooked for life; automobiles have been Wayne's passion ever since. Wayne learned the art of Ferrari restoration from his mentor Francois Sicard, a former Ferrari racing mechanic and his good friend Luigi Chinetti Jr., whose father Luigi Chinetti Sr. won Le Mans in a Ferrari in 1949. The RACQ has crunched the numbers and found that owning and running a car now is actually cheaper than it’s been for a number of years. The Queensland motoring club has released its annual Vehicle Running Costs survey which has revealed lower interest rates, cheaper fuel and more competitive insurance prices helped to reduce the upward push of costs in recent years. As reported at behindthewheel.com.au, the cheapest car to own and run in Queensland was a Suzuki Celerio, with the most expensive car a Nissan Patrol V8. Looking at all the expenses associated with normal car ownership, RACQ Executive Manager Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding joined Behind the Wheel hosts Chris Miller and Peter Hitchener to look at why the cost of owning some new vehicles has dropped by as much as $20 per week.

New app helps people learn how to drive. Technology is changing our cars at a rapid pace, now a learning top drive revolution is underway as well as novice drivers begin their driving careers on their smartphones. A new app available in the US from Aceable is helping people learn how to drive and it appears the concept isn’t that far away from being a major part of getting a driver’s license in Australia. The Aceable app courses include classes for defensive driving, driver’s education, employee training, corporate compliance and other similar tasks which people are now allowed to take online.
