Echt jetzt? Copyrights Cover: www.netcarshow.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Show #876   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 26th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   GM OFFERS FIRST OFFICIAL 2022 CHEVY BOLT EUV GLIMPSE IN TEASER "Chevrolet has released this brief teaser clip showing the Bolt EUV in profile, with an animated rendering of its evolution from the Bolt upon which it’s based." reports Autoblog: "GM told us the EUV has an extra 3 inches in its wheelbase, with that extra length going to rear passenger legroom. It’s also a little sleeker in its styling. GM has said in an official capacity that the Bolt EUV will be the first Chevy vehicle to get the partially automated hands-free driving system. Super Cruise is also getting improvements to add 70,000 more miles and new scenarios in which it can operate, and perform automatic lane changes initiated using the turn signal. According to Chevrolet, both the next-gen Bolt and Bolt EUV will go into production next summer."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/08/26/2022-chevy-bolt-euv-teaser-video/#slide-2252529   VOLVO XC40 T5 RECHARGE LONG TERM TEST "We’re testing the range-topping T5 Recharge model, which is, yes, a plug-in hybrid. with a three-cylinder petrol engine and 80bhp e-motor combining to drive the front wheels. We’ll delve more into the powertrain in coming months, but on first impressions it’s so slick and unobtrusive that you largely forget there’s a whole load of complicated stuff going on under the bonnet." writes Top Gear: "First impressions, too, are that the XC40 feels vastly solid and robust on the move, trading impish handling for the sense it could absorb a medium-sized missile strike with nary a shudder. On the optional 20-inch wheels, the ride can get a little clunky on really bad roads – which is to say, pretty much all British roads – so I’d be tempted to size down the alloys and embrace the squidge."   https://www.topgear.com/long-term-car-reviews/volvo/xc40/15-t5-recharge-phev-r-design-5dr-auto/report-1   RENAULT LAUNCHES E-TECH CAPTUR AND MEGANE PHEVS "Renault has launched the Captur E-Tech Plug-in Hybrid and Megane E-Tech Plug-in Hybrid models in the UK, with both PHEVs now available to order. The Captur E-Tech Plug-in Hybrid and Megane E-Tech Plug-in Hybrid both use a 9.8 kWh battery, able to be charged at up to 3.6 kW. This allows for a range of up to 30 miles on a charge for both models" says Next Green Car: "Captur E-Tech prices start at £30,495, with first deliveries expected in October. The Megane E-Tech's price is almost identical at £30,685, though first deliveries aren't expected until a month later. Both are available to order now."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8973/renault-launches-etech-captur-and-megane-phevs/   EUROPE IS MOVING AT TWO SPEEDS ON EV ADOPTION "Electric-car sales are surging in Europe, but only in richer countries, recent analyses have shown. The coronavirus pandemic has greatly slowed sales of gasoline and diesel cars, but it hasn't had the same effect on electric cars, according to a Politico report" picks up Green Car Reports: "While European EV sales appear robust, the surge is limited to richer countries. In the first three months of this year, 98% of European EV sales were in the 14 richest European Union countries, plus non-members United Kingdom and Norway, according to Politico. Strong electric-car sales are nothing new in Norway, thanks to aggressive government incentives and a receptive populous. While 26 of 27 EU member nations have some form of EV incentive program in place, some of the richer countries, such as France and Germany, have made electric cars a centerpiece of stimulus programs meant to lessen the economic impact of the pandemic. Not every country has undertaken such a stimulus program, and richer countries are also more likely to have money to invest in charging infrastructure, and consumers looking to buy new cars."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1129375_europe-is-moving-at-two-speeds-on-ev-adoption   EUROPEAN ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES SURPASS CHINA FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2015 "Sales of European passenger electric vehicles in the first half of 2020 exceeded those in China for the first time in five years. According to a report from Bloomberg, around 380,000 electric vehicles were sold over the 16 main European markets in the first six months of the year." according to CityAM: "Meanwhile, in China, which is widely considered the world’s largest market for such vehicles, sales dropped 44 per cent to around 330,000 models. A combination of new subsidy schemes for purchasing electric vehicles, as well as the rollout of a number of new models, was responsible for the increase in European sales in spite of the coronavirus pandemic."   https://www.cityam.com/european-electric-vehicle-sales-surpass-china-for-first-time-since-2015/   BMW EXPANDS I3 PRODUCTION WHILE VW LOOKS TO THE E-GOLF "In Germany, the increased purchase premium is boosting demand for electric cars. BMW and VW have now responded by expanding production of the i3 in Leipzig, while the VW e-Golf will continue to be built in Dresden until Christmas, contrary to initial plans." repotrs electrive: "BMW has cancelled the one-week summer break in i3 production, and the battery-electric vehicle is now in full production. This meant that almost 600 additional units could be built. Besides, BMW is now extending shifts and shortening breaks in ongoing plant operations to increase the number of vehicles per day from 114 to 125 to 130. VW is currently producing 74 units of the e-Golf every day, with the Group aiming for a moderate increase to around 80 electric vehicles per day. The deadline at Christmas is definite, however, as the Transparent Factory will be converted to the production of the ID.3 in January during a three-week production break."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/26/bmw-expands-i3-production-while-vw-looks-to-the-e-golf/   DELAWARE TRANSIT AGENCY TO POWER ELECTRIC BUSES WITH SOLAR ARRAY   "The Delaware Transit Corporation (DTC), which operates Delaware Authority for Regional Transit (DART), recently received a $2.5 million Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant that it will use to install a solar array at its operations and administration facility in Dover" says SmartCities Dive: "The solar energy produced will assist with powering the operations facility and DART's six electric buses in Kent County. Fourteen electric buses operate throughout the state, with two more expected to be added this year and four more next year"   https://www.smartcitiesdive.com/news/delaware-transit-agency-electric-bus-solar-array   TESLA IS HIRING, & ENGINEERS WANT TO WORK FOR ELON MUSK "If you have ambitions of working for Tesla, now would be a good time to apply. The company is on a hiring spree that could boost the number of its employees to about 65,000 by the end of this year, which would represent a 35% increase from the reported headcount at the end of 2019." says ClenTechnica: "Tesla has job openings listed on its Careers page, and they cover a vast range of fields and locations — the company is looking for engineers in California, construction managers in Texas, and vehicle technicians in China. Caixin Global also reports a “hiring spree” in China as Tesla preps for Model Y production at its Shanghai Gigafactory."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/25/tesla-is-hiring-engineers-want-to-work-for-elon-musk/   2021 FORD MUSTANG MACH-E FIRST EDITION WAS SOLD OUT, BUT NOT ANYMORE "Turns out the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E First Edition isn’t as “sold out” as we were initially led to believe. Ford has decided to re-open the books for the limited edition first year model, but it’s not doing it in a normal fashion." says Autoblog: "Instead of allowing customers to place reservations on Ford’s website, it’s going through popular social platforms. For example, you can reserve one on Uncrate, a website that bills itself as “the leading buyer’s guide for men.”. Ford never told us how many First Edition Mach-Es it was going to make originally, and when we asked this time, Ford again told us that it’s still not confirming an official number. This being the case, we’re totally clueless as to how many Mach-E First Editions are up for grabs on Uncrate. The site claims there’s a “limited number,” though, so it’s likely a low quantity."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/08/25/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-first-edition-available-again-uncrate/   You can listen to all 875 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)               PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)  PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJEEV NARAYAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. A female-focused multimedia platform, Svn Space is dedicated to educating the mainstream on the lifestyle benefits of Hemp, and how the plant can feed you, house you, clothe you, heal you and beautify you. “We were kind of dumbfounded when we realized how incredible hemp is — you know, it has over 25,000 known uses. Like our motto is: hemp is a plant that can feed you, house you, clothe you and heal you, which is pretty incredible that one plant can do all of that.” -Megan Villa, Cofounder + Creative Content Director of Svn Space On this week’s show, Megan breaks down more on why she and her cofounders are pushing to rebrand hemp, and give it a modern facelift. On their platform, they strive to showcase clear, easy-to-digest information, in an effort to “reverse stigmas, reveal the truth, and modernize the perception of this often-misunderstood plant”. In addition to sharing some of the 25,000 known uses of the hemp plant, Megan clears the air on some of the confusion around hemp and CBD when it comes to labeling amidst today’s minimally regulated space. The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: The hemp plant has 25,000 known uses “CBD: Isolate, Broad Spectrum, Full Spectrum. What’s the Difference?” “How To Read A Certificate Of Analysis” (COA) “Hemp is a bioaccumulator, so when it grows, it sucks all of the toxins and heavy metals out of the soil and into the plant, so that potentially can go into the product, so that’s why it’s of dire importance that hemp is grown organically and without chemicals.” Jungmaven, one of the pioneers in hemp clothing Brianna of ANACT Towels + hemp farming in Florida — listen to our show with her here > BMW uses hemp in the interior for their i3 electric car Hempcrete, a sustainable building material Wholistic Research & Education Foundation, dedicated to exploring the health benefits of CBD-rich therapeutics through funding medical and clinical research This week's episode is brought to you by Dough, a one stop shop to discover products by women-owned brands. Show #616   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 20th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to two new Patrons. Thank you to new supporter BILL BEINITZ. And a new PARTNER is always a very special moment. Welcome to EMOBILITY NORWAY. Since 2013, Jan Tore Gjøby has held over 200 courses and lectures on electrical mobility and charging infrastructure. In an engaging and easily understandable way, he talks about the transition to electric mobility and how it affects the environment, the economy and you. Jan's next course is in just a few days, on October 24th in Oslo.   Basic electric car charging What do laws and regulations say? What characterizes good charging systems? Electric car charging in condominiums and condominiums Payment models and systems Fleet charging strategies What the future has to offer, new cars, heavier vehicles, new charging solutions   Find out more at emobilitynorway.com. Also next Wednesday 23rd, Jan is going to visit next the first Polestar Space opening in Oslo.   ZIPSE PROMISES CONTINUATION OF THE BMW I3 "The new BMW boss Oliver Zipse continues the production of the electric model i3. After sales director, Pieter Nota had said in September that there were no plans for a successor to the i3, Zipse now put a stop to rumours of a possible production stop." writes electrive: "He made it clear to the local medium Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung: “The i3 will continue to be produced, no question about it. The car is already an icon today. Which car can claim this after only six years? Icons tick according to a different logic, they don’t have a classic successor, they always remain true to themselves in essence.” Today, the i3 is more in demand than ever and will “make another leap in battery and operating concepts”.   https://www.electrive.com/2019/10/19/zipse-promises-continuation-of-the-bmw-i3/   HUMMER REVIVAL AS ELECTRIC SUV COULD ACTUALLY HAPPEN "The Hummer brand has been defunct for almost 10 years now, but reports about its revival continue to surface. The most recent ones, however, may need future Hummer buyers to find charging stations instead of fuel pumps." according to Motor1: "In an exclusive report by Reuters, GM is said to have plans to build a new line of premium electric utes at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant at the end of 2021. With this new line comes the possibility of reviving the Hummer brand as an electric off-roading truck/SUV. This is according to the news organization's sources – people that are familiar with the said plan. The new line of premium electric utes will be called the BT1 electric truck/SUV project, Reuter's sources said. It will be the main subject of the $3-billion investment in the Detroit-Hamtramck plant to make electric trucks and vans, which is part of the four-year $7.7-billion umbrella investment in GM's U.S. plants – all enclosed within the proposed labor deal between GM and the United Auto Workers union."   https://www.motor1.com/news/377325/gm-electric-hummer-revival-report/   CALIFORNIA PLUG-IN HYBRID MAKER KARMA AUTOMOTIVE NOW ACCEPTS BITCOIN "Karma Automotive announced Tuesday that it will now accept Bitcoin at its flagship Newport Beach location. " says Green Car Reports: "In addition to dabbling in cryptocurrency for simple transactions, Karma will also explore theoretical blockchain applications outside of the that space, the electric-car manufacturer said in its announcement.  This move signals Karma's intent to expand its role as a tech incubator as well as an automaker. Many large-scale manufacturers have entered partnerships or established their own tech incubators to study green energy, mobility and other items outside of the traditional automotive sphere.  It also serves to further differentiate the new Karma brand from its roots in Fisker Automotive, from whose ashes the new company was formed. The Revero GT is the only carry-over product; two more models are planned along with a forthcoming in-house EV platform."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125562_california-plug-in-hybrid-maker-karma-automotive-now-accepts-bitcoin   HITACHI AUTOMOTIVE SYSTEMS STARTS MASS PRODUCTION OF 800V, HIGH OUTPUT EV INVERTER "Hitachi Automotive Systems, Ltd. has started mass production for its 800V compatible high-voltage and high-output electric vehicle (EV) inverter, which increases EV practicality and enables long-distance driving. The product contributes to both comfortable acceleration performance of the vehicle and faster charging times." according to Green Car Congress: "As most EVs are based on a 400V system, in order to increase the vehicle’s driving range, additional batteries with parallel connection are required. This results in increasing the battery capacity but also the charging time. However, an 800-volt system enables the battery to be charged with the necessary amount of energy over a short period, allowing for fast charging of high capacity batteries."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/10/20191019-hitachi.html   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS TOM RAFTERY The answer is simple. Stop spending money of subsidising fossil fuels. Two birds, one stone ☺ This would immediately make petrol/diesel more expensive, and therefore Evs more attractive! And the wider environmental effects of making fossil fuels more effective would cause a massive shift to renewables for electricity generation.   Peter Ferrett The government will save money by not subsidising oil as much, this should ofset the lost in tax from fuel.   Søren from Australia I suspect that stopping the subsidies given to the oil,  gas and coal industries would more than cover the lost revenues for petrol taxes.   OPHIR The best way to compensate for lost gas taxes is to stop subsidizing oil and gas companies!   DUNCAN ARMOUR I think the question only makes sense if you ignore what is going on around the industry. The UK government funds the fossil fuel industries to the tune of £490 billion (2014 - the government is very adept at hiding its funding). Worldwide subsidies for the fossil fuel industries are some USD5.3 trillion (2015). The nuclear industry additionally receives subsidies which dwarf those of the oil and gas industries. So, if we stop subsidising industries that are destroying us, we wouldn’t need to pay vehicle tax, and would be receiving huge rebates on our income tax (which would allow us to easily afford solar).   JERRY LEVY 1) Tax carbon emission of ICE cars from emission test result And 2) Tax electricity used by EV or even household if it is generated from fossil fuel.  This will force people to put pressure on local government and utility companies to generate electricity from renewable energy.   KIERAN KENNEDY Currently, EVs are exempt from road user charges, and this is currently our only form of EV incentive in New Zealand. The government has promised that they won't be charged road user charges until 1st January 2022 or when EVs make up at least 2% of the fleet, which ever comes sooner. It is looking like the 1st January 2022 will come sooner based on current trend, although uptake here is still impressive. When they do start to charge EVs road user charges, it makes sense to collect the revenue the same way we do for diesel vehicles currently. That is, road user chargers are bought in advance and displayed on your dash. This will have a higher administrative cost than taxing petrol currently, but wouldn't necessarily have to if systems were automated and done online.   DOUG VOWLES Here in Ontario Canada when vehicle registrations are renewed, the mileage is reported on the form.  So an equitable road taxation formula could be:   Yearly mileage X vehicle weight X vehicle type factor X “some constant factor” = $road tax   The vehicle type factor can be adjusted over time to reflect the increasing dominance of electric vehicles, being lower (but not non-existent) now, but rising as EV’s become the only type of vehicle on the road.    ED CORTEEN the answer is simple and fair (according to me!??), pay per mile driven, where driven and most importantly at what time of day, so city centres at peak times will be expensive, a quiet country road in the afternoon cheap. How can this be achieved? My 24kW leaf, now a 10 year old design already almost does this, from the app I can see how far we travelled every day, how much power used, how long the journey was and with modern telematics it should be quite simple to automatically gather the data required and send it in, (sadly)!   DAFFYD CHEUNG I’d suggest, the electricity supplied at public charge points could be taxed in the same way. The more you drive and the less efficient the vehicle, the more you’d contribute per mile/km. Since there’s a handshake between charger and vehicle. A count could be made, of how many kWh had been obtained from public chargers for your vehicle/s in the year or month. Home charging could also be taxed in a similar manner, if a fast charger is utilised   SHAWNE IN PORTLAND, OREGON Oregon has started a pilot "pay by the mile" program to replace paying at the pump. http://www.myorego.org/ I wonder if a tire tax would work. The bigger the tire, the heavier the vehicle,  the more road damage so the higher the tax.

Mach bitte weiter so. Show #463   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 5th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   BRIAN WEATHERALL I’ve already made the change to independent servicing in my 2017 Leaf, following a recommendation on the socials I found a garage on HEVRA.org.uk  The nearest was 40 miles away but for my leaf that’s quite a cheap and easy journey, they quoted £120 compared to the dealer at £199. Dropped the car off at 9am, had a few hours in a nearby café getting some work done on their wifi and was all done and back in the office after lunch.  No warrantee issues as they used genuine Nissan parts and followed Nissan service guidance, they even had my car plugged into a 7KW charger while they serviced it.  Also as you get 3 years recovery with Nissan for a new car I don’t lose that either, not for another year anyway.   CRAIG ROGERS I believe that independent garages will always be in high demand, as regular OEM dealerships continue to push their outdated and expensive service schemes as they try and rake in as much cash as possible. Look at Kia who are stating that the new Kia E-Nero is listed as needing a service EVERY year or 10,000 miles ……hahaha   I’ve seen many other comments on social media that state that Nissan, BMW, Mercedes are all doing something similar and charging huge amounts of money for servicing, until the customer questions exactly what has been carried on their vehicle! i.e. Diagnostic plug in check & Pollen filter change etc…. I would happily take my car to someone with a great reputation, like Cleevely EV, or another HEVRA registered company. At least I know that they have been properly trained on electric vehicles and know what they are doing. It more than I could say about OEM dealerships that are still concentrating on fossil car servicing.   RAJEEV NARAYAN The immediate future of independent auto repair shop, as they exist now, is indeed bleak. Items that need to be serviced in a pure BEV are fewer and in need of service less often. Also current specialty shops that specialize in mufflers, breaks, oil changes may all go the way of the phone booth. This threatens not only the independent repair shops and their non-dealer affiliated network of suppliers, but the dealership's repair and maintenance shop as well. As car computers get more complicated and telemetry data collection gets more robust and mainly shared with the dealer, it is quite possible the dealership will absorb a good deal of whatever maintenance and repair business is left, at the expense of the independents. I suspect the independent car repair/service business will continue to exist but change into something completely different, perhaps some sort of consolidated car wash/lidar inspection/safety check station that also will change your wiper blades and cabin filter, who knows.   GARETH FRANCE I feel there is certainly a place for after market servicing and repairs. My Leaf has covered 114k miles in 4 years and been rapid charged well over 4,600 times due to a previous life as a taxi. The battery is in perfect health however the charger failed during my first 6 months of ownership. Nissan wanted to charge a whopping £24k to repair this! I ended up actually repairing it myself at a cost of £500 using parts from a local breakers yard. However Indra Renewable Technologies would have only charged £1,500, a bargain compared to the dealer I think you will agree.   HOWARD SMITH I like the idea of other shops being able to upgrade or repair electric vehicles. I think the emergence of electric vehicles will breathe life back into automotive performance shops and parts suppliers especially as all electric conversion kits become available for classic car platforms.   KYLE HODGSON Think about all the phone repair shops. Sure some people take their iPhone back to the shiny genius bar, if it's in warranty- but where I live "u break iFix" shops are popping up in most neighborhoods now. We've used them ourselves with handed down iPhones that were out of warranty. I can't imagine the dealership service model working. Not enough regular maintenance. But, EV's still have windshields, tires, rims, wiper blades, windshield washer fluid, and on and on. I sometimes wonder looking under the hood of my Soul EV if someone with a healthy understanding of electrical safety could actually fix it more easily than our old ICE car? Simpler, certainly.   DAVID NYE Whilst the BEV service demands are much less than an ICE, I think it’s extremely important for other options to be available. There are also thousands of car repair shops employing many thousands of service people, and some of these will have to diversify to include EV’s. (I would imagine the same thing happened when horses were replaced by cars.) In any event, many smaller towns will not have dedicated company service premises for each brand of EV, so it’s really absolutely essential that manufacturers offer technical support, parts availability etc., to independent service providers.     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #431   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 31st March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Hello to MIA OPPELSTRUP who sent me a note to say she’s happy to be an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER of the podcast.   HOUSEKEEPING – UPDATE ON THE MINI ELECTRIC FROM PETER GLASS “I can assure everyone the Mini EV will be built in Cowley. Our EV group booked a tour for 15 of us last week to go around the BMW Mini Oxford plant. It's quite amazing in particular the first construction hall welding the steel pressings together called "Body In White", making 3 body shell types. This is a £500million recent investment with over a thousand £150k robots [work that out] and it's clearly going nowhere soon. The philosophy there is 'cell manufacture' not linear production line [final assembly is done in long lines] with separate cages of clusters of robots. While we weren't allowed anywhere near it, they were building the construction cells for the variation required in the Mini Cooper body, mainly the floorplate, to hold the batteries in a "T" under the back seat and former transmission tunnel.”   GERMAN CITY OF STUTTGART BANS OLDER DIESEL VEHICLES FROM APRIL 1 "A ban on older diesel vehicles in the German city of Stuttgart will take effect on April 1 and will include car owners who live in the city, the city said on Thursday, following a local court ruling last year." Reports Reuters this week. "The city said it would ban vehicles with engines conforming to the Euro 4 emissions standard from driving or parking in the city unless they are given an exception. Vehicles with engines conforming to the Euro 5 emissions standard will not be affected at the moment but a decision on whether to ban will be made after examining emissions results in mid-2019, the city said." As Kyle Hyatt points out though, Euro standards mean little to those listeners I have in the U.S.: "Essentially the Euro 4 ban encompasses all diesel passenger cars registered from December of 2010 and earlier. Euro 5a began in January of 2011 and Euro 5b ended in December of 2013."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-emissions-stuttgart/german-city-of-stuttgart-bans-older-diesel-vehicles-from-april-1-idUSKCN1R91P8   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/stuttgart-germany-diesel-car-ban-april-1/   NEW TOP GEAR MAGAZINE OUT NOW: ELECTRIC SPECIAL "Electric cars are no longer the ‘future of motoring’ – they’re already part of the mainstream. And what better way to prove that than with a features run solely devoted to the EV. So, in this month’s Top Gear magazine - out now - we take an in-depth look at two cars trying to make battery power cool. At one end of the spectrum there’s the retro-looking Honda E Prototype – a little city car with boxy styling and six screens in its interior. Then there’s the Pininfarina Battista. A 1,900bhp electric hypercar from the famous Italian design house, and further proof that speed-freaks will be catered for in the EV world. We also ask our man Paul Horrell to answer four of the biggest questions surrounding ownership of electric cars. How green are they really? Where will all of the electricity come from? Can I have one if I live in a flat? Find out the answers in the new issue."   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/new-top-gear-magazine-out-now-electric-special   BMW i3 SUCCESSOR SET TO BE MUCH CHEAPER "Aside from being BMW's first all-electric model, the i3 was special due to its carbon fiber construction something usually associated with high dollar sports cars not small city carse. Building the i3 with so much carbon fiber seemed like a great idea for weight saving but it caused production issues for BMW early in the car's life cycle. Carbon fiber is also expensive to produce, which contributes to the i3's high price." Reports CarBuzz.com: "If BMW does build a second generation, it will likely rely on more conventional lightweight materials like steel and aluminum. We know BMW plans to release 12 new electric models by 2025, so it will be interesting to see if a next-generation i3 makes the cut. Manager Magazine says BMW could use the 'i2' name, likely signifying that it will be cheaper than the current i3. The i2 could arrive in 2024 with a starting price of around 30,000 euros (approximately $33,821)."   https://carbuzz.com/news/bmw-i3-successor-set-to-be-much-cheaper   THESE USED ELECTRIC CARS ARE INCREASING IN VALUE As electric cars begin to become more and more prominent in the automotive world, the demand for small electric cars on the used market is increasing." Reports Dominik Wilde for Motor1.com UK: "Some models are even increasing in value according to the experts at automotive data company cap hpi, which says that some owners could even buy an electric car, run it for 12 months and still sell it on for a profit." Top 3 - Nissan Leaf, Renault ZOE and Mitsubishi I-MIEV   https://uk.motor1.com/news/315464/secondhand-evs-increasing-in-value/   LARGEST TESLA BATTERY STORAGE INSTALLATION IN ASIA FOR JAPANESE RAILWAY "Tesla has completed its largest battery storage installation in Asia in Osaka, Japan. The 4.2 MW / 7 MWh facility uses 42 Tesla Powerpack battery storage units, which were installed in just 2 days following their arrival onsite." Says CleanTechnica today: "The customer is Kintetsu Railway, whose electrified trains operate on 500 km (311 miles) of track. Many of those tracks pass through tunnels which can hamper rescue efforts if there is a power outage. The Tesla batteries can provide enough electricity for stranded trains to operate for up to 30 minutes — enough for them to exit those tunnels and perhaps reach the nearest station, according to ArsTechnica." "A report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance dated March 27 says, “the benchmark levelized cost of electricity for lithium-ion batteries has fallen 35% to $187 per megawatt-hour since the first half of 2018.” BNEF analyst Elena Giannakopoulou adds this insight: “Looking back over this decade, there have been staggering improvements in the cost-competitiveness of these low-carbon options, thanks to technology innovation, economies of scale, stiff price competition and manufacturing experience.”"   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/03/29/largest-tesla-battery-storage-installation-in-asia-for-japanese-railway/     NEW YORK CITY ORDERED 15 NEW FLYER XCELSIOR CHARGE ELECTRIC BUSES com says "The New York City Transit will expand its electric bus fleet by 15 low floor 60-foot Xcelsior CHARGE from New Flyer. The latest order – the biggest for articulated Xcelsior CHARGE buses so far –  includes also 16 150 kW Siemens DC fast chargers. The New Flyer’s buses are powered by XALT Energy batteries."   "“The order supports NYCT’s efforts to develop a cleaner, greener public transportation footprint, which focuses on building greater environmental sustainability, reducing emissions, and modernizing the MTA’s bus fleet. Each bus will leverage New Flyer’s CONNECT 360™ business analytics and reporting tool to optimize performance and operations.” “The 60-foot New Flyer Xcelsior CHARGE™ buses feature long-range, heavy-duty lithium-ion batteries. New Flyer batteries are designed specifically for rigorous 24/7/365 transit demands of New York City, utilizing American-based battery technology and American-based manufacturing supplied by XALT Energy. The award includes New Flyer providing sixteen (16) Siemens 150 kW direct current interoperable chargers with installation, testing and commissioning to be performed by the recently announced New Flyer Infrastructure Solutions™.”"   In the comments section, Dim says: "This is good news, as each electric bus will displace at least as much oil as 30 electric cars. So even such a small order of 15 electric buses, will have the same effect as 450 electric cars. When a single city like Shenzhen switched to using 16,000 electric buses, this displaced the same oil as 480,000 electric cars (or almost 5 years worth of Tesla’s production at 2017 levels and 140% of Tesla’s production at 2018 levels). Focusing political pressure on switching our cities to electric buses, will have really significant results"   https://insideevs.com/new-york-city-new-flyer-xcelsior-electric-buses/   APPLE HIRES TESLA’S HEAD OF ELECTRIC POWERTRAINS IN EFFORT TO BRING ELECTRIC CAR TO MARKET "Earlier this month, we reported on Tesla losing its VP of Engineering behind its latest electric powertrains; Michael Schwekutsch. We described his departure from Tesla as a big loss for the company since he is amongst the most experienced engineers who have brought electric powertrain programs to market, not just at Tesla, but in the industry as a whole." Says Fred at Electrek: "Now Electrek learns from separate sources that he joined Apple’s Special Project Group, which includes the Cupertino company’s Project Titan division. He is the latest of several top Tesla engineers to join the project, which was for a time thought to only consist of a self-driving system for vehicles after a scale-back of the plan. Now that Schwekutsch, who has exclusively worked on electric powertrains over the last decade, has joined Apple, it is becoming clear that the company plans to bring a complete electric vehicle to market."   https://electrek.co/2019/03/30/apple-car-tesla-electric-powertrain/   QUSTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   Emails then…     Neil 3 days ago Re question of the week. I currently drive a Toyota hybrid and I am currently looking at buying an EV so this is a question I have been thinking about. Generally I keep a car for between 4 to 8 years depending on how it holds up (I drive 25k a year I did put 200k miles on an ICE car with only routine servicing). I decided to estimate  the cost of ownership over 4 years. For instance going from my previous car to my hybrid saves me £600 a year. A rough guess going to an EV that could do 3 miles per kWhr would save £1500 a year assuming petrol prices stay constant. That is £6k there. Then there is reduced servicing (Teslas announcement this week caught my attention), reduced road tax, etc. The number gets large quickly.   Ashley Hill 3 days ago QOTW:  I can't give a perceived value here; as since researching into effects of breathing car exhaust and other pollution; I can't justify purchasing any other vehicle but full EV, because "I care about the air your breath" (think i might put that on a bumper sticker...)   Zoltán Kárpát 3 days ago (edited) EVs don't cost more than ICE cars. At least the cost of ownership is massively subsidized for gas cars. In 2018 it's estimated that in the US, big oil and big car got 1 trillion dollars in subsidies (800 billion in 2017) ... that's roughly a 4000USD/vehicle subsidy in just one year. In the meanwhile EV makers get about 5000USD/car in ZEV credits and buyers get 10000USD max, only once, for the life of the car. Long story short, if we eliminated all subsidies, then purchase price of EVs would be slightly lower than gas cars, but gas would be at least 4x more expensive than it is now.   Arnis 5 days ago I will pay 5 years of fuel(minus electricity bill). 2000€ per year. The 2019 BMW i3 now has 153 miles of range thanks to a bigger battery The BMW i3 is getting an upgraded battery — plus a bunch of other improvements —that will give the 2019 model about 153 miles of range. That's roughly a 30% improvement from the previous model. The boost in range is noteworthy, yet it still lags behind theChevy Bolt and the Tesla Model S, Model X and Model 3 vehicles. And it's only a smidge better than the much cheaper Nissan Leaf.

Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 19th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   NEWS IN BRIEF *VW's North American CEO, Hinrich Woebcken, told Autocar that it's future EV's, cars like the I.D. Crozz and I.D. Buzz would need to be built in North America rather than imported * The new Nissan LEAF is the best-selling electric vehicle in Europe for the first half of this year, selling 18,000, and that's now 37,000 it total for the new model Europe since last October * Volkswagen Motorsport, fresh from setting records with the I.D. R Pikes Peak racer, has urged World Rally Championship to find an alternative energy solution for the series, including electric drivetrains from 2020   TESLA MODEL S LOGS OVER 400,000 MILES IN THREE YEARS Congratulations eHawk! Tesloop, the shuttle service in California and Nevada, have a habit of christening their cars and it's eHawk which we're celebrating today, because 400,000 miles just ticked over on the clock. "eHawk has undergone three major services during its time with Tesloop" says Stephen Edelstein on Digital Trends: "The car’s front drive unit (this is an all-wheel drive “D” model with electric motors for the front and rear axles) was replaced at 36,404 miles. The car’s 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack has also been replaced twice: in August 2016 at 194,237 miles, and in January 2018, at 324,044 miles. "But the battery packs weren’t replaced because they were too degraded, according to Tesloop. The first replacement would not have been necessary if a firmware update had been available earlier, the company said. The car’s range estimator would decrease by 10 miles, even without any loss of charge, something Tesla attributed to an issue with the software that calculates range. The second pack was replaced when the car was brought in for an unrelated issue, Tesloop said." And in case you're wondering, yes Tesla did all that work for free. With an 8 year warranty, and at the current mileage, eHawk will be a million-mile Model S after 8 years.   https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/tesloop-tesla-model-s-90d-covers-400000-miles/   BMW i3 120AH RUMOURED TO HAVE A RANGE OF OVER 350 KM "The BMW i3 and i3s models will soon get a bump in range" according to the experts in know over at BMW Blog: "An i3 120Ah model is launching late this year – early 2019 for some markets – bringing a bigger capacity battery pack and implicitly longer driving range. Intensive preparations are underway in the background for the debut of a BMW i3 120Ah , which promises a standard range, according to NEDC, of over 350 kilometers – around 217 miles" Will BMW keep the range extender?   https://www.bmwblog.com/2018/07/17/bmw-i3-120ah-rumored-to-have-a-range-of-over-350-km   VOLVO XC60 EV VERSIONS HINTED WITH B4, B5 TRADEMARKS ANTHONY ALANIZ, Motor1.com USA: "Volvo trademarked both the XC60 B4 AWD and XC60 B5 AWD nameplates. Deciphering the trademarked names is easy. The B4 and B5 likely denote the XC60’s powertrain, which would be on brand for the automaker. You see, Volvo signifies its petrol powertrains with T – T5, T6, or T8 (plug-in hybrid). Diesel engines go under D4, D5, D6. If Volvo is introducing a new line of powertrains, then a new designation is needed. And if Volvo is pushing to sell electric vehicles, then B for battery almost makes too much sense."   https://uk.motor1.com/news/252974/volvo-xc60-b4-b5-trademarks/   GERMANY ORDERS TESLA DRIVERS TO PAY BACK EV SUBSIDY Imagine getting a free $5,000 subsidy off a new Tesla, having it on your driveway and using it every day, and then getting a letter from the government saying you have to pay back the grant. Because that's what has happened to Tesla owners in Germany. "Germany's Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control said in a statement on Tuesday that approximately 800 Tesla Model S owners who purchased their vehicles before March 6 must pay back a €4,000 (about $4,650) EV subsidy" as reported by Andrew Krok for CNET's Roadshow. The issue comes down to whether a base Model S can be bought for 60,000 Euro, which at Germany decided you couldn't then decide you could, and now seem to have decided you can't. Maybe someone at the government just needs to go to the Design Studio, select the base car with no options, see that it's under 60k and made a decision. It doesn't help that the grant is also paid for by other German car makers. Oopsie. TEsla said: "The arbitrary decision to temporarily remove Tesla from the list of vehicles eligible for the Environmental Bonus (Umweltbonus) was unjustified, contrary to the stated goals of the program, and unfair to our customers," said a Tesla spokesperson in an emailed statement. "We are appealing [the German government's] decision to take this action against our pre-March 2018 customers. To make sure our customers are not harmed by this decision, we will cover the cost of the bonus for them until the issue is resolved."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/germany-tesla-model-s-subsidy-payback/   LG CHEM TO BUILD $1.8 BLN EV BATTERY PLANT IN CHINA "South Korea’s LG Chem plans to invest $1.77 billion to build its second electric car battery plant in China to meet growing demand, a company spokesman said on Wednesday" Reuters reports: "The investment will be made by 2023 to increase its total output capacity to 32 gigawatt hours per year, or batteries for around 500,000 electric vehicles, the company spokesman said. LG will break ground on the new factory in October and expects to begin production in October 2019."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-northkorea-usa/pompeo-says-north-korea-deal-may-take-some-time-sanctions-to-remain-idUSKBN1K82HV   ELECTRIC CAR SUPERCHARGING HUBS FOR UK Pivot Power is the UK company building out a £1.6bn network of 45 grid-connected batteries with the added bonus of charging stations attached to them. Utility Week says: "Pivot Power has revealed more details on its plans to build an electric vehicle (EV) charging “superhub” with a 50MW battery on the outskirts of Southampton. The battery will have storage capacity of 50MWh and cost up to £25 million. Construction is expected to begin in March and be completed three months later in July 2019. The superhub will offer rapid charging for as many as 100 cars at a time and will be capable of supporting the fastest chargers currently available."   https://utilityweek.co.uk/ev-charging-superhub-with-50mw-battery-coming-to-southampton/   TESLA VIRTUAL POWER PLANT IN AUSTRALIA PASSES INITIAL TESTING Steve Hanley for Clean Tehnica is keeping up to date on the world's largest virtual power plant, 50,000 5kW rooftop solar systems coupled to 13.5kWh storage in Australia. "So far, the installation of rooftop solar and storage batteries has been completed on 100 homes and the results are everything Tesla expected them to be. In addition to completing the remainder of the Tesla Virtual Power Plant system, the Liberal government that came into power in March is expected to announce $100 million in grants to install battery storage systems on 40,000 more homes in South Australia. Other companies, particularly sonnen, will be involved in the battery storage aspects of the systems for those additional homes."   AND FINALLY  - LEAF DISCOUNTS Waded Malone at InsideEVs has news to put a smile on prospective Nissan LEAF buyers: "Nissan is now offering $2,000 cash back if you finance through Nissan Motors Acceptance Corporation (NMAC). So long as you live in a state that has adopted a ZEV mandate that is. As is usually the case for electric vehicles from traditional automakers, the best offers are relegated to a few states."       COMMUNITY YouTube comments   You can listen to all previous 184 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. 1. The first story we ranted about was the story of a Kia dealer in Vancouver who very blatantly pushed away a customer who was looking to buy a Kia Soul EV. The story is a really absurd one, but it's also a good demonstration for why Tesla doesn't trust dealers to sell electric cars. 2. That led us into a future in which we can simply skip the sketchy dealers and buy our cars online. Sure, galleries and test drives are still a must, but there's a lot of benefit to purchasing online. Aside from Tesla, one car company bringing us into that future is BMW. The news is that BMW is now selling its i3 on Amazon Japan. 3. Another interesting BMW i3 story we decided to discuss was based around recent information from BMW of North America. Basically, while many people think of the i3 and most other electric cars as city cars, the i3 is proving very popular with drivers outside of big cities in Texas, South Florida, etc. This actually matches really well with research I learned about at EVS27 which argued that people living in small cities would benefit from electric cars more than people living in big cities. 4. Then there was this story: 800 HP Zombie 222 Electric Mustang Goes 174 MPH At The Texas Mile. Yes, 800 HP. Yes, 174 MPH. Yes, the Zombie is back. 5. And a really, really fun one: Chris's test drive of the Tesla Model S P85D. You've got to listen for that one.
