Put on the heating, grab a hot chocolate and slip on your comfiest slippers, its time to settle down for your favourite entertainment podcast. As Britain braces itself for the big freeze, we highlight some of the latest content that is sure to warm your cockles. James presents a triangle of streaming shows including She Said, The Menu and Bastard!! Heavy metal, Dark Fantasy. Meanwhile Dan reviews cosy crime drama Three Pines and relationship drama Tell Me Lies. In the world of Reel news, the Golden Globes returns with some surprising nominations, Avatar gets positive early reviews and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman future looks to be in peril under James Gunn's DC reign. For our main review we pivot away from typical blockbusters to filmmaking originality and award winning success as we discuss a film that the majority of people are unlikely to go and see. Triangle of Sadness scored big at the Cannes film festival this year winning the coveted Palme D'or but is it just another tedious art house film? Or is perhaps worth altering your cinema going habits to give way to something a bit different?

In this December 7, 2022, edition, the @Dan_N_JoeSportsShow hooligans go from the Gridiron to the Pitch to give a recap of the World Cup and preview the great quarterfinal matchups between Argentina - Netherlands, France - England, Brazil - Croatia and most shockingly Morocco - Portugal. Meanwhile Dan recaps his love for Argentine futbol and culture and his hope that this finally the year Messi brings home an elusive WC Title which would put a cap on his storied career. We also put the USMNT run to the Rd of 16 where they lost to an experienced and solid Netherlands team into perspective and look at what their good showing with a young team foretells about its chances of making a real run when the US hosts the WC in 2026 In a less upbeat subject we go from the thrill of success on the world stage to the embarassment of a Vesuvius explosion in the New Orleans Saints late 4th Quarter collapse and blown lead to Brady and the Bucs. We talk Dennis Allen's costly decision to kick a FG to go up by 13 instead of go for it and win the game with The GOAT on the other side of the field and the trajectory of the Saints program in Allen's first year as HC. James reviews Under the Banner of Heaven and The Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power. Meanwhile Dan gives his thoughts on The Resort and Fall, a film that will likely not draw a box office crowd, but does it deserve to? Reel News focuses in on the recent purge of negative reviews for Amazon's most expensive show of all time and we give credence to the rumour that Taika Waititi may not be retuning for another Thor instalment.  For our main review, in the absence of anything worth our time, we resort to a film that's been out for months but still shows no signs of running out of fuel. On this episode of the Board Game BBQ, Sarah is joined by Def and Dan to talk about heavy games, light games, and everything in between. In our Sizzling Games, Def wows us with the epic Gaia Project, Dan (and his son) battle the undead in Zombie Kidz Evolution, and Sarah has been trying to get everyone onto her wavelength in, er... Wavelength. We also introduce a new segment: Beyond the Board, an interview series where we speak to interesting people in the board gaming community. This week we spoke with Oliver Millan, a Melbourne board game designer who has been working on his pet project, Matchbox Empires, for over two years. We discuss his inspiration for the game, and learn about its mechanics, but also enjoy a greater discussion about prototypes and playtesting. We reveal the winner of the most recent Board Game Bracket: Aeons End Legacy vs Azul, before announcing the next match-up: Through The Ages vs Dead of Winter. It's Dan vs Def in this one and only one game can be victorious. Make sure your favourite goes through to the next round by casting your vote on all of our socials. There's not a lot of Kickstarter action between the team this week, so instead Def breaks down the heavily-backed Nemesis for us. Meanwhile, Dan has backed the fun-sounding Roll Camera!: The Filmmaking Board Game. Swear An Oath is such an important segment - it's when out team stand before each other and our listeners and vow to honor the Board Game Gods by playing a game from our #shelfofshame. Which is why it is so disappointing when one of our own fails to respect the code and fulfill their oath. Okay, that was a bit heavy-handed - basically Sarah didn't have time to play Race For the Galaxy: Alien Artifacts this week. But she does make amends by doubling-down on her oath and adding Papayoo to the list. Meanwhile Dan played both Stuffed Fables and Fox In The Forest Duet, and Def played Tzolk'in. The lads then add Back In Time (Dan) and Viticulture (Def) to their oaths. Dan talks to Liz Miele, who started performing stand-up when she was sixteen. Liz talks about what it was like to start out, why she started, and how her parents supported her. She shares how her comedy has changed over the course of time, although she’s still exploring very similar premises. Dan and Liz explore the balance that new comics must find between taking advantage of every opportunity and being honest about what you’re ready for. They agree that comics need to be brutally honest with themselves at all times, for the sake of becoming a stronger performer. Liz explains why it helps to have friends who can give you honest critical feedback. They discuss the challenge of recognizing when an audience sucks versus admitting that your own act needs work, and agree that even a shitty audience can provide an opportunity to have a rewarding performing experience. Liz speaks about the importance of self-care, and staying mentally healthy. This, it turns out, is crucial for better, more grounded comedy. Dan sees this as the correct response to the way that some comics seem to revel in being mentally unhealthy. Liz talks about a new joke she is working on about her mom. The challenge of the joke is that it touches on the theme of child abuse, but she also talks about learning to see her mother as a wonderful person. Meanwhile Dan has an idea for a joke about turning down social interactions with friends so that he can stay home and experience the illusion of hanging out with people via YouTube.

Dan Saladino looks at our long and tangled relationship with spaghetti. Both carbs and meat are under scrutiny and Mintel, which monitors consumer behaviour around the world, says we're eating less pasta. With that in mind Dan explore the past, present and future of a much loved British classic, Spaghetti Bolognese. Food historian Polly Russell uses the British Library's archives to help plot Britain's love affair with pasta, and goes in search of some of the earliest references and recipes for 'spag bol'. The food writer Daniel Young of Young and Foodish takes Dan on a tour of spaghetti history with lunch at The River Café, not the world famous restaurant but a traditional British café of the same name run by an Italian family who arrived in London in the 1950s. Spag Bol has been on their menu for nearly half a century. Meanwhile Dan's dad Liborio, who arrived in the UK in the mid 1960s finds out if his Britalian style spaghetti Bolognese sauce has enough to impress Giorgio Locatelli. The historian, John Dickie, author of Delizia, explains how making a television series for Italian television, Eating History (for SBS Food), led him to the world's first ever pasta factory. Dan also visits Italy's biggest pasta factory, owned by the Barilla family, where miles of the 'Spaghetti No.5' shape flows off the production line. Jacob Kennedy, chef and owner of Bocca di Lupo, together with Daniel Young, help Dan stage a pasta pop-up event at which the authentic Tagliatelle al Ragu Bolognese is pitched against a 1960s style Spag Bol. Have British eaters become too sophisticated for the home grown and will they vote for authentic Italian tradition instead? If this programme doesn't make you want to sit down to a big bowl of pasta and ragu, nothing will!

Mary originally hails from the Harrisburg comedy scene, but is currently pursuing her dreams in Los Angeles. And like everyone who pursues their dreams in Los Angeles, she has concerns about the food. She and Dan discuss the difficulties of being crowd worked by other comedians. Mary talks about why she moved to LA, and about the many logistical difficulties involved. Dan digs into his file of old jokes that never worked and finds one idea based on a time he sat through a panel discussion about comedy etiquette wherein one of the audience members loudly clipped his nails. Mary wants to write a joke about scammy websites, but in the process shares a story about being taken in by a scam that severely stresses Dan out. They see potential for comedy in the idea of building some sort of ongoing relationship between Mary and the scammer. Dan also wants to write a joke about being in ambulances as a sick form of entertainment.

Jordan Levine is a man of many talents, though as an improv artist he is currently between troupes. He discusses the development of his world-famous opening catchphrase, much to Dan’s delight. The two reminisce about working on a bad joke together at an open mic. They talk about using comedy to make a point, and about how important it is to put effort into performing no matter how small the audience is. Dan shares a brand new, completely untested joke idea about becoming invested in the drama of comments written inside bathroom stalls, and he and Jordan consider the bathroom stall as perhaps the least nuanced form of political discourse. Then Jordan shares a whole string of milk jokes, and Dan finds the bit to be solid, though he offers some ideas on a cow-related bit. It’s easy to make jokes about vegans, but what happens when a vegan makes a really dark joke about depressing animal cruelty videos? It may not sound like a recipe for comedy, perhaps until you hear it in the voice of beloved Baltimore comedian Dark Mark. The joke lands really hard for Dan, but they acknowledge that a regular audience might find it too disturbing to laugh at. And yet Dan thinks that, framed as a plea for veganism, Mark could still pull the joke off. Dark Mark has been hosting the legendary Sidebar open mic for around four years. Dan and Mark talk about the nature and perils of crowd work, and whether certain interactions with an audience should even be considered crowd work. They discuss various approaches to joke writing, whether it’s carefully planning every syllable in advance, or going onstage with a vague idea and letting the audience guide you to the finished joke. Regardless of the comic, there seems to be value in trying different approaches. Dan asks Mark about a specific joke involving dogs and bees, and learns a little about how the joke was developed. Speaking of dogs, Mark is working on a doozy of a joke about dog cruelty. Mark reveals in the setup that being a vegan has changed his Facebook feed, with the end result that he is now subjected to numerous disturbing videos. A small but brutal observation turns the bit into a joke, although he and Dan explore how to make the joke work for a general audience. There seems to be potential. Meanwhile Dan wants to make a joke about the time he went to college with Kurtis Blow, the rapper (true story). He and Mark kick a few different ideas around, and Mark challenges Dan to take the story onstage at a mic and work the bit out in front of an audience.
