Johansson Sensei started Aikido in 1990 and has built up an impressive resume of teacher that he has actually studied under. Johansson Sensei is a seeker who is interested in not only the deeper philosophical aspects of Aikido but also the intricate details of the human body. The term bullshido first appeared in the mid-1990s. It is a combination of the words bullsh!t and bushido. While its meaning can vary depending on who you ask, most people in the martial arts community can agree that it refers to fraudulent martial artists who teach ineffective martial arts. The topic we're talking about today was inspired by my ruminations on Bullshido martial arts promo demonstration videos. These are the videos where a martial arts master shows off their skill in a patently fake demonstration, usually starting with breaking concrete slabs or wood and then progressing to a performance where they show how easily they can defeat all of their students who try and attack them. The really bad ones will pretend to channel “chi” (a fake energy) and knock down their students without even trying! The thing is that often the teachers actually believe they can really DO this stuff because the reactions of their students make them believe that it's real. And the students believe it too because of motivated reasoning (they WANT to believe), and they are influenced by each other. It's all one self reinforcing bubble echo-chamber of belief. There are two reasons I'm talking about this in terms of webcomics: 1. Bullshido is the origin of the amazing and silly martial arts and superhero moves and techniques in comics and animation and it's interesting to know where it comes from. and 2. this sort of stuff is why we have preconceived ideas about why a lot of pop-culture is good or bad: We fall for a sort of tribal thinking that's created by our tendency to follow the beliefs of others without examining them for ourselves. It's the sort of thing that results in cults, conspiracy belief, and our opinions on political figures. It's even why we believe that valve amps, Les Paul guitars, Stradivarius violins, and vinyl records sound magically better than the alternatives. In this episode, Hoots reviews another way to develop capabilities! Through radical candor feedback, teams can deliver feedback that is honest, kind, clear, and concise. Radical Candor feedback comes from a place of caring personally about a human being and challenging that human being directly. In this episode, Hoots reviews one of his favorite books called Radical Candor: How to be a kick ass boss by Kim Scott. Hoots raves about this book and her blog! Feedback can be both hard to give and hard to receive. From birth, we have been told ‘if we don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all.' This is total Bullshido and needs to be rethought. If we don't have something nice to say, ask yourself if it is constructive and if you care personally about the person that you are referring to, if both answers are yes then share the feedback! The other comment we've been taught our entire life is to ‘be professional.' Somehow, that means leaving your feelings at home and don't care about people. This also couldn't be further from the truth. Hoots suggests analyzing your relationships to help yourself understand where you are from a feedback standpoint for those who mean the most to you. We have to change our views on feedback to make sure that feedback is actionable. That is good feedback that helps us to learn and adjust moving forward! That is being lean!
