Featuring violent Afghan sport Buzkashi, plus naked golf and unfortunate scorpion bite locations
Imagine a sport that is like basketball but on horses and the ball is is a goat carcass. That's Buzkashi, the national sport of Afghanistan. It came about during the 10th century when nomadic tribes stole goats from each other and is incredibly popular in Central Asia. Kyle and Jheisson do a shallow dive into the sport and gab about their Thanksgivings, Korean BBQ and not getting covid.--Find Wiki U on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube under the handle @wikiuniversityMusic provided by Davey and the Chains

This week I discuss what's happening in week 15 of the NFL. NBA-Is the Anthony Davis more the problem with the Lakers being average? I set the record straight on his stats. Strange Sport-Would you try Buzkashi? Imagine polo but replace the ball with a goat. I discuss an AP report on Camel Pageants in Saudi Arabia. Seems cheating is found in even the most unique competetions.

This week we move on from the incredibly odd combination of brain power and brain damage that is Chess boxing to Central Asia to take a look at the interesting mounted sport of Buzkashi and its deep ties into history.
This week's episode of Down to the Wire is kicked off with our signature "OTW's" with entries such as "Built different moment of the week" going to a man who eats raw chicken and claims vegetables make you weak. Our Back Page news segments features stories such as, " Florida woman Is Accused Of Posing As Student, Sneaking Into High School To Promote Her Instagram", "What's the beef? Woman hit with meat package at Saint Euclid Walmart", "Doctors in London report fivefold increase in children swallowing magnets", and "Owners of Milwaukee bakery print burglary suspects picture on sugar cookies". While virus protection is keeping a large proportion of the world's population indoors and isolated, I thought it would be good to have an episode looking at a subject noted for community, good vibes, and exercise - sport. I talk about a recent run I had where I got queried by police (but not for being outside!), then about places I've gone to to watch sports around the world, including football/soccer, ice-hockey, AFL, and Buzkashi. For many people sitting on the beach with a margarita is their dream vacation, Matt West is not one of those people. With a passion to see the world and a strong aversion to “touristy” destinations he’s been to 72 countries, many on the US State Department’s Do Not Travel List, with no desire to stop anytime soon. His blog Conflict Zone Travel documents his exciting and unusual travel over the years, from being asked by a warlord to play Buzkashi in Afghanistan to almost being arrested when traveling through South Sudan, Matt shares his stories in hopes of inspiring others to step out of their travel comfort zone and broaden their horizons. In this episode of The Occupation Wild Podcast Courtney and Nick sit down with Matt to talk about the Every Passport Stamp Community, how he decides and plans what country to travel to, taking risks, travel advice and share some crazy travel stories!

Sam describes himself as a storyteller before anything else. He is passionate about stories and being able to bring them to life, so it's no wonder he's an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker. His film project, Buzkashi Boys, has garnered multiple awards and nominations and has been praised by film critics worldwide. The film is set in contemporary Afghanistan and revolves around two Afghan boys who strive to reach their dreams amidst their current situation in one of the most war-torn countries on Earth, all while participating in the Buzkashi, the country's national sport. "You're never going to know how you think about something until you get there." On this episode, Sam shares his experiences - especially the ones he went through while he was making Buzkashi Boys. He talks about living in Afghanistan and how Hollywood filmmakers are viewed to be these ridiculously rich guys, and how this is a total misconception. "Failure is only a temporary setback." A dark time, he shares, was when he was accused of mismanaging the funds for the film and the subsequent anxiety attack that he suffered due to the allegation. However, Sam bounced back up and proved all his detractors wrong. "I look forward to taking the next step." Today, Sam is currently in Bali, working on another story. We can't wait to watch the next film! Get in touch with Sam: sam@samfrench.com Facebook www.buzkashiboys.com www.dirtyrobber.com
