Ep 142 – Canadian Voice Actor Paul Milando Is the voiceover business different north of the US? Our guest this week is a Toronto-based talent who began performing on camera before transitioning solely to voiceover for the past seven years. Paul Milando shares his experiences so far with agents and auditions and how he balances a seasonal job as well. About Paul Milando: First of all, I would like to thank the Academy…. Film, television, radio, public speaking, and playing “dress-up” have been passions of mine since childhood. From voicing cartoon characters, to having fun with Halloween costumes, to being the joker at family get-togethers; this has always been a part of my life. At University, I hosted a couple of radio shows and a good friend of mine suggested that once I moved back to Toronto, to find an agent and do some of this stuff as a “cultural release.” I shifted my focus from “in front of the camera”, to “in front of the mic” and I couldn't be happier in my accomplishments in VO. My engaging and warm speaking style is a favourite with television broadcast and film producers seeking a sincere, educated and friendly voiceover artist and narrator. Clear enunciation and articulation, in a pleasant baritone speaking voice, is present from commercial and corporate scripts to character voices and Audiobooks, and is fundamental to my interpretation of professional scripts. My professional home recording studio allows for timely and efficient narrations. With the crisis in Gaza right now we are hearing many different voices. One voice I wanted to hear was from Palestinian Canadians. In this episode I share an interview I made with Ehab Mustapha, a Palestinian Canadian from Mississauga, Ontario.
We launch our sixth season with Tamara Lorincz, environmental and feminist peace activist and Linda Thyer, founding member of Doctors for Planetary Health - West Coast and a discussion on the interconnected impacts of war and occupation on both people and planet, the costs of Canadian militarism and our involvement in NATO and the possibilities for global cooperation, peace, and climate justice in times of conflict. Reflecting on the twin impacts of conflict on climate in Gaza and Ukraine, Lorincz says: “The Middle Eastern region has suffered from drought and from excessive heat. This genocide in Gaza is just horrendous for the people and it's exacerbating the climate emergency as well. These fossil fuel powered weapon systems that Israel is using, not just fighter jets, but attack helicopters and tanks. And the fact that Canada took over two and a half months for us finally to support a ceasefire, but we've been continuing to send weapons … we're prolonging the genocide and we are contributing to a climate emergency. Canada is doing the same thing in Eastern Europe by continuing to send arms to Ukraine. We're prolonging a conflict instead of calling for a ceasefire …We are contributing to human suffering, to a lot of death and destruction and contributing to the environmental harms.” Thyer says of our military spending: “Canadian military spending around $36 billion per year recently. So this is a massive amount of money, could certainly be much better … used to mitigate climate problems, used in new technology ... And could be used to help recoveries internationally as well as locally from these extreme weather events that we're seeing. In some of these war zones, people are being conscripted against their will to fighting. In Canada, our conscription is through our taxes that we are paying for this militarism, for the harms that are being done to the planet and to other people through our taxes every year.” About today's guests: Tamara Lorincz is a PhD candidate in Global Governance at the Balsillie School for International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University. She has a Masters in International Politics & Security Studies from the University of Bradford and a Law degree and MBA specializing in environmental law and management from Dalhousie University. Her research is on the climate and environmental impacts of the military. She's a member of the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom-Canada. Tamara is also on the advisory committee of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, and the No to NATO Network. She's a long-time environmentalist, feminist and peace activist and a mother with two teenage boys. Linda Thyer is a mother of 3 youth, practicing family and sport medicine on traditional Coast Salish territories. She is a founding member of Doctors for Planetary Health - West Coast and active member of several community and medical organizations working towards peace and a healthy living home. She is grateful for the many healing and nourishing gifts of Mother Earth and works towards restoring health and peace for all. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded February 4th, 2023. Last month, the German government of Olaf Scholz relented to NATO pressure, agreeing to donate Leopard 2 tanks to the Kiev regime's war effort. The United States was quick to follow, delivering the first 60 of a promised 109 Bradley M2A2-ODS Fighting Vehicles to Ukraine. Canada's Trudeau administration in the last week too pledged tanks, the minister of defense, Anita Anand saying four Leopard 2's would be given over, including ammunition, parts, and a deployment of Canadian soldiers to "train" Ukrainian tank crews. This while countries like Turkey work for a ceasefire agreement to end the near year-long conflict between Ukraine and its neighbour, Russia. Glenn Michalchuk is chair of Peace Alliance Winnipeg, and president of the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians. Glenn's been active in the peace movement since the Dirty Wars of Ronald Reagan in the 1980's. Glenn Michalchuk in the first half. And; throwing tanks, ammunition, spare parts, and soldiers onto the fires of a hot war is not the only evidence of Canada's new self-understanding as a warrior nation. In January too the contentious purchase of a fleet of American F-35 jets was approved by the Trudeau government. A press release from Public Services and Procurement Canada reads in part, "Through Canada's defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, the Government of Canada is acquiring modern military equipment to keep Canadians safe and protected, and to support the security of our international allies and partners." The release did not explain just how expediting nuclear winter makes Canadians strong, safe, or protected. Tamara Lorincz is a fellow with the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute, member of Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, and a PhD candidate in Global Governance at the Balsillie School for International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University, where her thesis focus is climate and the environmental impact of the military. Tamara's also served on the advisory committee of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, and contributed her knowledge and talents to the organizations World Beyond War, and the No to NATO Network. Tamara Lorincz and militarism's two ecological doomsday scenarios in the second half. But first, Glenn Michalchuk and Canada's all-in move on Ukraine. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded June 25th, 2022 Last week British Home Secretary, Priti Patel did what was expected of her and signed off on the extradition to the United States of political prisoner, Julian Assange. Assange you may recall has languished in London's maximum security Belmarsh Prison, enduring the harshest conditions allowable under British law, since being dragged from asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy April 11th, 2019. But as deplorable as his treatment by British authorities has been - treatment that would illicit howls of protest were it discovered to be inflicted on a caged dog - central to Assange's defense against extradition is the prospect of an even grimmer fate at the hands of American Justice. Steve Poikonen hosts Slow News Day on Rokfin, the pre-news news place you go to get hip BEFORE the s*it hits the fan! Steve's also an activist, documentary filmmaker, and contributor to the Union of the Unwanted and MCSC Networks. He's also been an organizer with Action4Assange, co-host of the #FreeAssange Vigil, and has gone to the streets for Assange's release in his home country, the United States of America. Steve Poikonen in the first half. And; next week NATO, the 73 year-old alliance to defend Europe against Soviet Russia, will hold its annual summit in Madrid. NATO says it's meant to, among other things, present and endorse the war organization's "New Strategic Concept". Across Europe peace and civil society groups are set to demonstrate against the death and devastation created by NATO's existing concept and protest the prospect of more of the same. Meanwhile in Canada, coinciding with the Madrid meet up, the Peace and Justice Network here is mounting Days of Action, a coordinated effort to: Stop the Weapons. Stop the War. And, Stop NATO. Tamara Lorincz is with Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, who last year led the No Fighter Jets days of action held across Canada. She's also served on the advisory committee of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, and contributed her knowledge and talents to the organizations World Beyond War, and the No to NATO Network. Tamara Lorincz and Days of Action to Stop the World's greatest purveyors of violence and war in the second half. But first, Steve Poikonen and the the next turn of the legal screw for Julian Assange. FRED KEATING "Just got off the stage on April 27, Saturday night from hosting the 45th annual Rosie Awards for AMPIA. The organization of professional Alberta producers, directors, craftspeople, digital teams, film & television distributors as well as exhibitors. I started volunteering for them in about 1979 or so. I became their only performer member for about 15 or more years. There are still very few performers who are members of the association and/or willing to volunteer some time on AMPIA’s sponsored events in order to create and nurture personal and professional relationships with the busiest producers, directors and media companies in Alberta." - Fred Keating "Play the long game. Promote your pals. Those good deeds will come back to you! It’s a marathon not a sprint." - Fred Keating "Find out more about how you can get involved in AMPIA. Call Bill Evans, AMPIA's Executive Director, and tell him “Fred told me to call”. If you don’t have enough of a track record to become a member, at least get on the volunteer call list and make yourself available to meet some of these people. Get OUT there so you can get IN there. Staying in the game is half the battle. Social media didn’t even exist when I was first trying to network. That central switchboard of opportunities you have today would’ve been a godsend when I was just getting started in the business," shared Fred. Tamara also strongly opposes the role of the Canadian government in the illegal war against Syria.

We talk about some news/drama, new releases, and mainstream-metal interactions. Namely Dallas Toler-Wade leaving Nile and getting replaced with Brian of Enthean. Then Cynic drama following the recent release of their demo tapes. Then some new music. Galactic Empire (and Anchorhead), Dodecahedron, Artificial Brain, Body Count, Linkin Park, Reaping Asmodeia, Ogarya, John Frum, Born of Osiris. Of course we talk about the dude singing Necrophagist at Canadian Voice. And the Grammys, namely Megadeth and Metallica. Post-recording note: New Nile lineup is awesome. I'm stoked now. That fist bump was amazing.
I went down to Victoria's Canadian Forces recruiting centre to talk to some of the people observing VOWS' annual day of demonstration. VOWS is calling on the Canadian Government too: "Substantially reduce military expenditures and re-allocate them to urgent social and environmental needs." They say: "The federal government should invest in programs that will reduce poverty and help our country transition to a low-carbon, green economy and NOT on combat missions overseas and buying new warships and fighter jets." National and international events are organized on this day by the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace and the International Peace Bureau. What does it mean to be a global citizen? 15-year-old filmmaker Kasha Slavner is traveling the world this Spring to document the answer to that question, by filming people who wake up every day with a desire to make the world we live in a better place, not only for themselves, but for their communities and all life that shares this planet. At 8 years old - after seeing Craig Kielburger, the founder of Free the Children, give a talk on the work of his organization - Kasha decided she was ready to start making a change in the world. Kasha became quite active very quickly - joining social justice clubs, raising funds for issues she was passionate about, and participating in campaigns for a variety of charities. In March, 2013 Kasha was selected as a youth delegate by the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace to attend the United Nations for the 57th annual session on the Commission of the Status of Women. Now, Kasha is taking a giant leap to make a difference by starting The Global Sunrise Project and convincing her mother, Marla, to let her take a semester out of school to travel the world using her love of photography, film and change-making to create a short documentary and book on global citizenship. The duo is seeking support and funding from others who believe in the project, through their Indiegogo Project for the documentary - "The Sunrise Storyteller©" -which will focus on stories of hope and resilience where people, despite what challenges they may face, are doing good things to make a difference in their own lives and in their communities - people who are "being the change they wish to see."She and her mom, Marla, will begin their 6-month trip this Spring. They will experience a completely different side of life from what they’re used to in their home of Toronto, Canada — the adventure will take them to corners of the globe where life isn’t always so easy, and they’ll be living out of one small bag with just a few changes of clothes.Kasha's mom, Marla, believes all of this experience is part of what she calls "educaring" for Kasha - which goes beyond just a traditional education.Join Julie Ann as she hosts both Kasha and Marla on ConsciousSHIFT, to explore the choices we each can make to positively impact change.
