Kirsten Jones: Raising Empowered Athletes

The Hamilton Review

This week, we are happy to welcome author, podcaster and motivational speaker Kirsten Jones to The Hamilton Review Podcast! In this conversation, Kirsten shares a lot of valuable information from her book, "Raising Empowered Athletes" including helping our kids move through discomfort, leaning into the things that we value as parents and helping them get to the other side.    Kirsten and Dr. Bob also talk about youth sports, burn out and more.   Parents, this is a must listen conversation!   Kirsten Jones is a motivational speaker, author, podcaster and Peak Performance Coach. Along with Susie Walton (mother of former NBA player and coach, Luke Walton, and three other peak-performing sons), she is the co-host of the popular #RaisingAthletes Podcast, based in Los Angeles.   Jones is an empowered, successful athlete herself: she played Division I volleyball and is a member of the William and Mary Athletics Hall of Fame. She was a fifteen year executive at NIKE in both Europe and the U.S.   Ten years ago, Kirsten was certified through a Tony Robbins life-coaching program, Strategic Intervention. She started life coaching, doing motivational speaking, coaching youth sports teams and writing a monthly blog. Sports have been a constant in her life- whether player herself, coaching her children, or working with athletes and their parents as a Peak Performance coach.   Over the last five years, Kirsten has spoken to thousands of middle school, high school, and college athletes: parents; coaches; and sports administrators about the increasing pressure to compete both on and off the court-- and how to thrive as both an athlete and a human being while effectively coping with all that pressure.   She is the mother of three athletes. One played Division I basketball at Boston University and is now playing for DIII at Claremont Graduate University while getting his MBA; a second son, also a Division I basketball player, is a sophomore at Colgate University; and a daughter who just finished high school and played club volleyball throughout, is now a freshmen at Loyola Marymount University Film School. Kirsten's super power is helping people get out of their heads and into their bodies so they can feel their best and perform beyond what even they dreamed possible.      How to contact Kirsten Jones: Kirsten Jones Website   Kirsten Jones on Instagram   Raising Athletes Podcast   Raising Empowered Athletes Book   How to contact Dr. Bob: Dr. Bob on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChztMVtPCLJkiXvv7H5tpDQ Dr. Bob on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drroberthamilton/ Dr. Bob on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bob.hamilton.1656 Dr. Bob's Seven Secrets Of The Newborn website: https://7secretsofthenewborn.com/ Dr. Bob's website: https://roberthamiltonmd.com/ Pacific Ocean Pediatrics: http://www.pacificoceanpediatrics.com/

Empower kids to advocate for themselves. Creating is as important as consuming. We only get 18 summers with our kids. Adversity in sports teaches valuable lessons. Check in with kids about their dreams regularly. Model self-care and self-respect for your children. Every child is different; tailor your approach. Help kids set the table but don't feed them. Involvement is key for kids to own their process. Athletics should be a passion, not just a job. Burnout is a significant issue in youth sports. Lifelong athleticism is more important than competition. Success in sports can be defined in many ways. Parents should focus on the joy of sports, not just outcomes.

You've probably noticed it—whether or not your child is an athlete. You've heard the stories. Athletes burning the candle at both ends, playing multiple sports at high levels, trying to balance school and sports for hours each day while sacrificing sleep, eating well, and blowing off stress in productive ways. Parents, with their hearts in the right places, pushing their kids to edge up—work harder, get in front of the right people, get more practice, get the right positions, get more playing time—only to burn their children out, blow their bodies out, obliterate their interest in the very activities they once loved. But how could they now try? Their kid is so talented- they seem to adore it—it's not work, it's fun…until it's not. You know what I'm talking about, don't you? Let's discuss it today with Kirsten Jones. The post How to Raise Empowered Athletes and Resilient Kids with Kirsten Jones appeared first on Dr Drobyn Silverman.

Have you ever been so angry at a sports coach, program, or situation that you couldn't wait for a season to be over with…or you wondered how the heck you could have so much anger in your humanly heart about a situation? Or have you ever wondered how/why the “big business” of sport has trickled down all the way to youth athletics? Or have you ever heard the “psycho parent” who is just lighting-up the referee or coach to the point where YOU are actually embarrassed? (please don't tell me YOU are that parent. ☹). Haha.    You are in for a real treat today. Not only do I address some of these questions (and then some…), I have a fun, nostalgic conversation with Kirsten Jones, a fellow William & Mary alum and Hall-of-Fame volleyball player at the “College of Knowledge” on a topic both near and dear to our hearts today…sports & athletics. And the awesome thing is that Kirsten is not just a Mom of 3 athletes, she's a best-selling author on the topic, a speaker on the topic of “Empowering Youth Athletes,” and she has a podcast called “Raising Athletes” today. To say she is qualified to speak on the topic is an understatement. And her latest book, “Raising Empowered Athletes—A Youth Sports Parenting Guide for Raising Happy, Brave, and Resilient Kids” might just be her most prolific work yet.   Here are a few of the things Kirsten and I discuss on Ep. 324 of the IMPACT SHOW podcast: We take a trip down memory lane and look back at the good ole days at W&M. The '80s & 90's were a different ball game in youth & college sports. So I ask Kirsten to paint a picture of how we've moved from seasonal sports and backyard fun to a whopping $20 billion industry that's predicated on $$$, pressure, and stress? How did we get here? What do the “best” coaches do? What do the “worst” coaches do? I bring up the notion of the “NIL” era and the implications, good & bad.  I discuss and riff on “Is what Deion Sanders doing and saying a good thing for college sports?” Hmmmm….(more to come on this…) I ask her the question about if and when she believes kids should “specialize” in sports. We talk about the crucial “3 F's” of youth sports. Kirsten talks about what an 'empowered athlete' looks like and why it's so important to raise not just strong athletes, but extraordinary individuals… and how to do that. We talk about why she is the one carrying this torch. What's her story, and why did it have to be her who wrote this game-changing book? How parents can be “crazy” and actually rob kids of the joy of sport and ultimately burn-them-out and make them want to quit their sport at young ages.  Is “failure” in sport good or bad? How and why are these cheating scandals happening in HS & college sports. What's next for Kristen as an advocate for “Raising Empowered Athletes” at ALL levels and what she's doing to promote this to parents, coaches, and kids.   Enjoy the episode. I feel like I could do a very deep series on this topic as I'm passionate about it. Hi all! Jess here! Welcome to a new season! We are back with our usual #AmWriting content and I'm incredibly excited about this episode. Seven years ago, I was speaking in the school library of a small elementary school in California - the entire event was a favor for a friend - and met a reader named Kirsten Jones. I love small events because I get to spend so much time talking with the audience members at the book signing. One of the last people to get her book signed was Kirsten, a former NCAA athlete and aspiring writer. She had this idea, she said, a Gift of Failure but for the parents of athletes. YES, I said. Write the book. We need this book. Please let me know how I can be of help to you so this book can be in the world. Seven years later, here we are. Raising Empowered Athletes was born August 8, 2023. In this episode, Jess and Kirsten talk about the journey from a beautiful, scary, secret idea whispered to another writer at a book event to publication day and everything in between. Kirsten is a former college and professional volleyball player. In addition to providing life coaching to athletes and parents, Kirsten is also raising three athletes of her own, including a son who plans to play college basketball. We talk about some of the biggest challenges for parents raising athletes including parental expectations based on early athletic achievements, keeping sports in perspective, intrinsic motivation, the "sweet spot" for sports participation, and what to do when your kid wants to quit their sport.   Quotes from Kirsten "If your kid gets chosen for the 'B' team and they're ten, ask them some good questions. A lot of times, we decide whether that means success or failure for them...Parents project out their kid's whole life plan based on whether they made the 'A' team at ten!" "The self-talk that we're doing is so powerful." "We sometimes as parents have decided for them who we want them to become. And then things start not aligning. Or they don't make the team." "Really it's not about sports. It's about how we show up in life." "It's really about helping them create the life of their dreams." "That's how she got to be so good, because she had zero ego about asking for help." "So many times as parents we get caught in our ego about what level my kid should be or how good they are, what team they're on, and 'if they're on this team, it must mean I'm a good parent.' It has nothing to do with your parenting skills!" "We all need a break. You need to go hard. Your sleeping and your recovery are as important, if not more important, than when you're in work mode." "I think 80% of the game is the mental part." "Be creative. Be curious."
