The Minneapolis trio Barbaro grows out of the American bluegrass tradition, but the key words there might be “out of”, as Barbaro doesn't race through banjo breakdowns and flashy fiddle solos, although they can do those things. The band is something of progressive version of bluegrass – using traditional instrumentation like fiddle and banjo, but drawing inspiration from electronic music and writing songs that may sound pastoral and folky but which often carry a bit of a bite. Barbaro plays new songs from their rootsy chamber music album, About The Winter, and chats about horse racing, in-studio. Set list: "Subtle Hints", "Gardens", "All My Friends"

So... I'm not the kind of person who uses the phrase, "...one of the best concerts I've ever been to...", lightly. That being said, last night's Infamous Stringdusters concert, at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, WAS literally one of the BEST concerts I have ever been to!!! There was no laser light show, no fancy stage set up, no gimicky distractions... Nope. Just a group of 5 INCREDIBLY talented guys doing what they obviously enjoy doing: PLAYING THE MUSIC THEY LOVE!! I felt their love, as did all the other attendees, which was shown through the crowds hoots, hollers and whistles of approval :) It was a performance not to be missed, and man oh man am I grateful I chose to attend ;) I do know that from this poing on I'll NOT miss any shows that are within a reasonable proximity to wherever I am! And I gently suggest you don't either ;) AND I just learned the "side guitar" is officially called a Dobro! This chick is still learnin' :) Here's to YOU becoming INFAMOUSLY STRINGDUSTED! This week we welcome Route 3 Bluegrass Band and The Temptations! From Southern Missouri, award winning Bluegrass Band ROUTE 3 is comprised of veteran musicians that have performed at venues all over the mid-west as well as nation wide. With a traditional sound, many originals, and great instrumentation, they bring a hard driving bluegrass sound. Route 3 are recipients of the 2020 Arkansas Country Music Awards, Bluegrass Artist of the Year Award. Members of the group include: Jason Jordan: When nine-year-old Jason Jordan met Bill Monroe, he got to play his mandolin, and his love for bluegrass music began. Shortly after that, Jason began playing mandolin in his first band, an all-youth band called The Parking Lot Pickers. Jason subsequently was a founding member of Just In Tyme. He started writing and arranging his own songs. Shortly after he received an invitation to join Brightwater Junction as their guitar player. Jason co-wrote the song Captain that was recorded and made popular by Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and also wrote seven of the songs on the Route 3 debut album. Doug Clifton: At the age of 12, Doug Clifton began playing bass at his home Church, Macedonia Freewill Baptist in the Southwest Missouri town of Purdy. Soon after, he and best friend Brandon Rickman, along with Brandon's brother Heath and dad, Gary, formed The Rickmans. In 2000, Doug was a part of New Reflections, winners of the S.P.B.G.M.A International Band contest in Nashville, Tennessee that year. Doug has played with multiple bands over the years including The Messengers, Breakaway, The Signature Quartet, The Kellys, The Drifters, Roaring River Sound and New Road. Gaylon Harper: In 1986, Gaylon started learning banjo at home and attending weekend festivals with friends. It wasn't long before he was playing with a local traditional bluegrass band, Jim Orchard and The Bressler Brothers. While traveling the bluegrass circuit with them, Gaylon met the Bob Lewis Family. Shortly after, he was given the opportunity to join their band. In 1994, Gaylon and wife, Katrina, started a group with his two brothers to form The Harpers. 2009 begin the biggest adventure with the Lord so far, when Gaylon and his family begin a full-time music ministry as The Harper Family. In 2010, The Harper Family won the S.P.B.G.M.A International Band competition. A highlight is when Crossroads Recording signed them to their Pisgah Ridge label in 2013. Gaylon came off the road and became music minister at First Baptist of Birch Tree, MO. Roy Bond: Roy attended his first bluegrass show at the age of 12 and was instantly hooked. He soon began learning to play guitar and study music. Roy has been performing on stage since he was 13. He became a member of the Current River Opry show for the last two years of its 45 year run at the age of 14. After that, Roy became a member of Jim Orchard & The Ozark Bluegrass Boys where he stayed for 13 years. He has also done a considerable amount of fill in and part time work with many Ozark based bands including The Bressler Brothers, The Baker Family, Kirby Clark, and many more. This week we welcome The Baker Family and Jason Coleman! From Birch Tree, Missouri, the Baker Family has become one of the most talked- about family musical ensembles in the country. They tour nationwide, performing around 100 concerts each year, and they have produced multiple CDs. The Baker Family is a past winner of the Entertainer of the Year award given by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America-Midwest. The band also received the Album of the Year honor from that same organization. In 2016, the Baker Family won the Youth in Bluegrass band competition at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. This competition is the premier showcase in the world for bluegrass musicians under the age of 21 and their parents. That same year, the group was named Bluegrass Band of the Year by the International Country Gospel Music Association. The family appeared on season 12 of the NBC television program America’s Got Talent. Producers of that program invited the group to audition for the program after seeing a YouTube video of their award-winning performance at the 2016 Youth in Bluegrass band competition. The group has also performed on the RFD-TV program The Bluegrass Trail. The Baker Family has also won the Oklahoma Bluegrass Band championship four times, and they won the Pickin’ In The Pines band championship in Arizona in 2013. The band includes mom Carrie Baker, who plays guitar and upright bass. Three of her four children are also in the musical group. Twenty one-year-old Trustin Baker plays fiddle and banjo, and he also sings lead and harmony vocals. He is a past winner of the Grand Master Fiddle Championship at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. This award is the most prestigious honor given to a fiddle player. He has also won more than a dozen other fiddle competitions in five states. Carina Baker, 18, plays mandolin and sings lead and harmony vocals for the family band. She is a past winner of the Mandolin Player of the Year award and the Female Vocalist of the Year award from SPBGMA-Midwest. Sixteen-year-old Elijah Baker plays bass and lead guitar, and he sings both lead and harmony vocals for the group. He is a past winner of the Oklahoma State Junior Fiddle Championship. Both Carina and Elijah have also competed and won other honors for their musicianship at festivals and contests across the country. You can check their website: TheBakerFamilyBluegrass.com; or on their Facebook page: Facebook.com/OfficialBakerFamily. Jason Coleman From a young age, it was evident that Jason had inherited his grandfather’s “slip note” touch at the piano, as it managed to “slip” its way into even the most elementary songs from his early piano lessons. Jason’s keen ability to play music by ear led to a childhood spent arranging his own renditions of the songs he loved, just as his “Grandad” did throughout his career. In addition to sharing the piano bench at home, Jason grew up performing with Floyd at his concerts and on national TV, and though he was only 12 years old when Floyd passed away, the close relationship they shared formed the foundation upon which Jason has built his own career in music. Jason made his Grand Ole Opry debut at age 17, and two years later, he was given the honor of playing for the Medallion Ceremony recognizing Floyd’s induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Since then, he has spent his career in the studio and on stage, producing a collection of his own piano albums and touring across the country in concerts that pay tribute to his grandfather’s enduring legacy and signature piano style. A Nashville native, Jason makes his home in Hendersonville, Tennessee, with his wife, Natalie, and their son, Avery Cramer. You can check Jason’s website: JasonColemanMusic.com; or on their Facebook page: Facebook.com/JasonColemanMusic

WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST Episode 25 The MilBillies ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ When The MilBillies set out to record their debut album, their goal was to capture the energy and drive of the stage performances that have made them a mainstay of the music scene in and around Milwaukee. The plan was simple. The string band’s five members worked with sound engineers at Milwaukee’s Silver City Studios to record the tracks “live,” setting microphones up in a circle to capture the natural sound of the bass, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo and dobro. The vocals were saved until the end. Otherwise, overdubs and re-takes were kept to a minimum. Rather than a slick studio artifact, the band sought to produce the sort of experience that can be had only when musicians are responding to each other in the moment, picking up on small cues and allowing their music to flow naturally. The results, evident on every track of this recording, more than justify the approach. The band members went so far toward capturing their essence that they decided to go with the simplest title possible: The MilBillies. With this stripped-down recording, fans who might not have seen the band live can now have essentially the same experience anywhere they want. But The MilBillies’ ambitions did not stop there. Besides reproducing the feel of a live show, the band wanted to draw further attention to its original songwriting, which has already led to a Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) nomination in 2020 for New Artist of the Year. Influenced as much by pop and classic rock as bluegrass, The MilBillies’ tunes feature hooks with universal appeal. The album’s 12 original tracks range from driving breakdowns to bluesy groovers to simple love songs. Their lyrics often pay homage to the city The MilBillies are proud to call home. Snippets of Milwaukee history receive a nod in the tracks “Ol’ Fred” and “Goodland,” while “Hoods” alludes to three local neighborhoods – and the difficulties of finding romance in each. Others, such as “Wild Turkey” and “High Class Low Life,” revel in the good times and raucous atmosphere that are a hallmark of the band’s shows. Equally noteworthy is the album’s artwork. For this, The MilBillies worked with the contemporary installation artist Jennifer Angus, a professor at UW-Madison, to find an ideal setting for the cover photo. The search took The MilBillies all the way to the Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh, where they found the perfect complement to their music: An exhibit meant to be experienced in-person to accompany a record offering so much of the essence of live performance. With COVID-19 having shut down most musical venues, The MilBillies’ debut album could hardly come at a better time. Listeners will not only be able to hit play on a recording reproducing the intensity of on-stage shows; they’ll also have a chance to delve into well-written songs that reward repeat listens with clever lyrics, solid musicianship and tuneful hooks that – once heard – will remain with them well into the future. Borne of the back woods of Appalachia, bluegrass became a distinct musical style when Bill Monroe combined elements of traditional Scottish, Welsh, Irish and English music with a uniquely American influence and took his show on the road for a career that spanned 60 years. Monroe played this style of music he'd largely invented until the time of his death in 1996. But there are other towering figures in the genre who are still performing in 2013 - currently an octogenarian, Ralph Stanley won a Grammy for his version of "O Death" from the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack in 2002 and is still going strong. Younger generations of musicians have followed in Monroe and Stanley's footsteps - sometimes expanding bluegrass and sometimes sticking close to the traditionalist style. Los Angeles' Rocky Neck Bluegrass Band is a new ensemble that falls more into the latter camp of tried and true bluegrass instrumentation, but also pushes its boundaries just a little by reworking some classic rock songs to fit into a more conventional bluegrass framework. The results bring a fresh kind of familiarity to new fans that might not know standards like "Pretty Polly" but do know Neil Young songs. Rocky Neck Bluegrass Band has one EP available, a full performance schedule and they took first place in the California Bluegrass Association's "Great 48 Showcase Showdown" in 2012.

Greg Norman started at a local jam session and later joined the Off the Line bluegrass band and singer-songwriter Janne Henshaw's band. Kent Todd was trained in classical violin, and was steered toward bluegrass by his father Scott, also a bluegrass musician; he has played with Bill Grant and Dehila Belle, Michael Cleveland and the Blue Hollow Band, Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers, and currently is also a member of the Troubled Waters Band. The youngest member of the NTBBB, Brady Stogdill, is a member of the original International Bluegrass Music Association's Young Acoustic All Stars; his father Dean was a great banjo player, and he has learned to play almost anything with strings on it.
