Originally only available on YouTube. East Coast DNA: On The Road now available on all platforms. Join East Coast DNA co-host Darcy Walsh as he visits Shoebox Cantina, in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, for a chat with Antigonish based indie rock band Gardener. Stay until the end of the episode for live performances of their brand new 2023 single Captain and I'm Broke (from their 2022 album Nothing Changes). Gardener is the garage rock project of Nova Scotian indie-folk musician Landon Morris. Starting in November of 2021, Gardener provided Morris with an outlet to write louder, more experimental music, while still retaining the fundamentals of his solo material - catchy melodies, intricate songwriting, and simple arrangements, met with walls of fuzz and distortion. With a true DIY ethos, the music is recorded on home equipment, often spawned from jam sessions with friends. When playing live, Gardener consists of musicians Nathan Langley (bass), Alasdair Cameron (drums), and Magnus Labillois (lead guitar), while Landon plays rhythm guitar and sings. With hints of Weezer, Built To Spill, and Alvvays,"Captain" turns the Gardener project into a new direction; stronger melodies, more careful arrangements, and more intricate songwriting. The newest release from the Nova Scotian garage rock project details a dream of being a captain lost at sea, accepting his fate as the waves rise high over the ship, and seeing an apparition of his newly-departed lover in the storm clouds. The song's driving drums, smooth bass, impassioned vocals, jangly lead guitar, and thick walls of fuzz blend together to create a layered song that feels as loud as it does melancholy; but in the waves, making peace with your fate is liberating --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/east-coast-dna/message
EX52 - Amanda Marshall - It takes years to learn how to play like yourself - Fall From Grace and I Built This House Amanda Marshall steps back into the spotlight with new album It's been more than two decades since Canadian singer Amanda Marshall released new music, but the wait is finally over for her fans. Marshall is perhaps best known for her 1995 self-titled debut album, which featured hits like “Dark Horse” and “Let it Rain.” It is one of only 24 Canadian albums to achieve diamond certification in the county. Marshall followed it up with two more multi-platinum albums before disappearing from the music scene. Now, 20 years later, Marshall is back. She's re-emerging with her first album since 2001 and a nationwide tour to go with it. “I said to someone the other day, ‘it's sort of like slipping back into a warm bath, but you're shocked the water's still warm' ... so that's kinda what it's been like,” she told CTV Atlantic's Katie Kelly. Marshall says her hiatus from music began in 2002 after she fired her manager. “It triggered a landslide of legal issues that went on and on and on,” she says. “I was sort of at lose ends; there was considerable questions as to whether or not I was going to come back and make music publicly. I was always writing and recording and I knew that I had this record in my back pocket.” Marshall says words of encouragement helped her get back into the music game. “I had one friend in particular who said to me, ‘you're too young to retire and you're too good not to try, don't waste your gift,' and that really stuck with me.” Marshall's brand new album “Heavy Lifting” will be released on June 9. Earlier this year, fans got a taste with the album's first single -- “I Hope She Cheats.” “It's just been shocking to me, the level of enthusiasm with which it has been received,” says Marshall. “It's truly been just amazing.” Marshall will soon hit the road on her “25 & Counting: The Heavy Lifting tour” in support of the new album and in celebration of her past releases. She says she's excited to see the country again, especially the East Coast. Marshall lived in Halifax for three years between the ages of 10 and 13. “I have a trove of memories of living in Nova Scotia, those were really, sort of, my early tween-formative years,” Marhsall says. “I remember everything from first school dance, my first boyfriend, my first kiss -- my first everything.” Marshall's tour kicks off at Casino New Brunswick in Moncton, N.B., on June 11 and ends Aug. 5 at The Jubilee music festival in New Glasgow, N.S. She says she is looking forward to reconnecting with old fans and making new ones. “That's what every recording artist that I know aspires to -- to look around the room and see generations of people singing these songs back to you. It's amazing,” she says. “And the new stuff has gotten such a warm reception so far that I'm so happy that the people around me talked me into putting it out and coming back and giving it an opportunity to be heard.” Songs Featured: Amanda Marshall - Fall From Grace Amanda Marshall - I Built This House https://www.amandamarshall.com/ ___ Add To My Playlist Website

Dr. Gail Tomblin Murphy is the Vice President of Research, Innovation and Discovery for Nova Scotia Health. And she describes what this initiative is all about, and how it can be helpful to some of the other systemic challenges that have been amplified by the global pandemic.
A drama about civil rights icon Viola Desmond by Andrea Scott. Viola has the magic touch of making other women look their best, and her beauty products for Black Women are selling like hotcakes. She's an independent woman travelling all over Nova Scotia selling goods when her car broke down in New Glasgow one fateful day in 1946. She decides to take in a movie to pass the time and inadvertently sits in the ”‘all-whites” section of the theatre, changing the course of her life and history.
Nine years before Rosa Parks galvanised the American civil rights movement by refusing to sit at the back of a bus, Viola Desmond sparked the mobilisation of a Nova Scotian community when she refused to be moved from a 'whites only' section in the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. Her actions inspired generations of Black Canadians in not only Nova Scotia but across the entire country who fought and won the right to be seen as equals in an unequal Canadian society. While at the time Viola's struggles were nearly forgotten today she is considered a person of historical significance and is the first Canadian woman to ever appear on a Canadian dollar bill. Your hosts today. Lynn Desjardins, Levon Sevunts, Terry Haig and Marie-Claude Simard (listen or watch video of show at the bottom) UN expert warns of a coming 'climate apartheid' A man walks through land in Bhola, Bangladesh where his home was washed away by rising water. Scientists project seas will rise an average of around one meter this century. Just 65 centimeters would swallow about 40 per cent of the country’s productive land, according to the World Bank. (Shahria Sharmin/AP Photo/Nov. 17, 2015) A United Nations expert says the world is risking what he calls a “climate apartheid” scenario where the rich can pay to escape heat, hunger and conflict while the poor are left to suffer. Climate change threatens democracy and human rights, says UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Philip Alston in a new report. To get some Canadian reaction to his use of such strong language, Lynn reached Philip Loring, professor of geography at Canada’s University of Guelph. Washington and Tehran at impasse as Trump threatens Iran with 'obliteration' Iran on Tuesday sharply criticized new U.S. sanctions targeting the Islamic Republic's supreme leader and other top officials, saying the measures spell the "permanent closure" for diplomacy between the two nations. For his part, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani described the White House as "afflicted by mental retardation." Photo taken in Tehran, Iran, Tuesday, June 25, 2019 (Iranian Presidency Office via AP) Tensions between the United States and Iran reached new highs U.S.when President Donald Trump threatened this week to obliterate parts of Iran. And Iranian officials called White House actions "mentally retarded." All this posturing and tough talk came after new US sanctions against Iran.On Monday President Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions against Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior figures. The moves came after Iran shot down a U.S. drone on June 20. The US was about to launch a retaliatory strike when Trump called it off at the last minute, saying too many people would have been killed. The US is sending additional forces to the Persian Gulf and Iran has threatened that if attacked it will inflict a lot of pain on the US all across the region. For more on, this Levon spoke with Bessma Momani who teaches at political science and international relations at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. He asked her what did she make of this latest round of tough talk and name calling. An anonymous gift sparks a lot of love in a Nova Scotia town A Nova Scotia community has been warmed by an anonymous gesture from a stranger who placed $100 bill and a message of positivity in a town park. The treasure was found by New Glasgow town employee Doug Miller while setting up for a funding announcement over the weekend. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/HO, Geralyn MacDonald) A random–and anonymous–act of kindness has residents of the Nova Scotia town of New Glasgow feeling pretty good about themselves and life in general these days, says Terry. The good vibes began over the weekend of June22, 2019 when town worker Doug Miller began setting up for a funding announcement in a local park. It was cold and dark and Miller was working alone when he noticed something: a baggie…with a $100 bill and a note inside. Terry called Miller to find out what exactly happened. In November, the Bank of Canada introduced a new $10 bill featuring the image of Viola Desmond. Viola Desmond has often been compared to Rosa Parks, the U.S. civil rights activist. But Viola Desmond’s act of defiance in a New Glasgow movie theatre in 1946 is just one aspect of a remarkable life as a businesswoman in Nova Scotia. Wanda Robson is Viola Desmond’s sister; Graham Reynolds is professor emeritus and the Viola Desmond Chair in Social Justice at Cape Breton University. Together, they co-authored Viola Desmond: Her Life and Times, just released by Fernwood Publishing.
