Even Congress got in on the act, debating Satanic symbolism in songs by performers like AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne. “The country is in crisis!” screamed the pundits. After all, it was the height of the Reagan era and Nancy Reagan's “just say no” campaign was everywhere. But what this case revealed were bigger problems lurking at the heart of suburban America.Ricky Kasso wasn't a bad kid, but he was lost. To feel better, he started smoking pot, moving on from that to PCP and LSD. He ended up living on the streets and thinking he had nothing to lose. Gary Lauwers went from being a victim of bullying to using drugs to fit in, and finally robbery—but then he made the mistake of stealing from Ricky, and from that moment on, his fate was sealed.A few months later, Gary went into the woods behind the park with Ricky and two other boys. Only three of them came out.The subsequent police investigation and accompanying media circus turned the village upside down. Also an accomplished musician, Pollack's soundtrack work has been heard on Driving Jersey, an Emmy-nominated PBS documentary series. He is married with two children, three dogs, and a couple of cats. The first set of remains was discovered in 2010 while police were searching for another woman, 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert. It wouldn't be for another year when Gilbert's body would be found across the way on neighboring Oak Beach. Once Gilbert's body was recovered, the total number of bodies found was 11. Police said most of the women worked in prostitution and advertised on such services as Craigslist. When an independent autopsy was performed on Gilbert's body, they were able to determine she was killed due to homicidal strangulation. The reason for the second autopsy was the first one concluded Gilbert had died from drowning and drug overdose. The autopsy was able to show she did not die from a natural disease, drug overdose, or drowning. Gilbert had vanished after visiting a customer and was told to have freaked out and started banging on neighbor's doors, asking for help and saying people were trying to kill her. On June 19, 1984, seventeen-year-old Ricky Kasso murdered Gary Lauwers in what local police and the international press dubbed a “Satanic Sacrifice.” The murder became the subject of several popular songs, and television specials addressed the issue of whether or not America's teens were practicing Satanism. Even Congress got in on the act, debating Satanic symbolism in songs by performers like AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne. “The country is in crisis!” screamed the pundits. After all, it was the height of the Reagan era and Nancy Reagan's “just say no” campaign was everywhere. But what this case revealed were bigger problems lurking at the heart of suburban America. Ricky Kasso wasn't a bad kid, but he was lost. To feel better, he started smoking pot, moving on from that to PCP and LSD. He ended up living on the streets and thinking he had nothing to lose. Gary Lauwers went from being a victim of bullying to using drugs to fit in, and finally robbery—but then he made the mistake of stealing from Ricky, and from that moment on, his fate was sealed. Over 37 years ago Dakiea met the love of her life. 18 months later they were married. They shared a beautiful life together. In 2009 her husband got sick. The doctor's said he would not make it, but Dakiea did not lose faith. Her husband was eventually able to return home and Dakiea assumed the role caregiver. As time went on his condition worsened, but their love never diminished. 11 months ago, her husband passed away. In today's Moving Forward Moment, Dakiea shares her story of losing her husband, trying to find herself, and the most important daily things she does that are helping her heal and move forward.
