It's the Christmas finale episode this week. The girls sit down to discuss Ariana Grande's changing tone of voice over the years from her deeper 'Thank U, Next' era to her now more theatre vibe for Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked. Is this an Austin Butler circa Elvis situation? Or even a Paris Hilton baby voice? Clara brings a real humdinger to the floor with this absolute 'blowing the the case wide open' explosion; it's a deep dive on America's Next Top Model , the TV series hosted by Tyra Banks that dominated all of the ladies' TV screens in the early 2000s. This competition/reality show sounds like an experience from hell with Clara giving us the lowdown on some previous winners and contestants. TRANSCRIPT HERE WOW WELCOME TO EPISODE 50! So completely chuffed that we achieved this milestone! *FANFARE AND STREAMERS* The fabulously articulate (it's his job) Clinton McQueen joins us to unpack in great detail the legacy of Americas Next Top Model, specifically Cycle 11. We discuss how the series perpetuated beauty and body standards, and tackled issues of race, gender, sexuality, mental illness and disability. We also unpack how they portrayed the inclusion of first transgender model on the series (Isis King) and what it meant for the world. Because as you should know, trans women are women, and trans lives matter. To rewatch the ANTM season (if you so choose) click here! Please note we recorded this episode before the abhorrent Anti-trans and Nazi attended March occurred in Melbourne and only make note of the anti-trans movements occurring overseas. I very much wish I didn't have to make this note. CONTENT WARNING: body image and fat phobia, transphobia, homophobia, and sex work stigma, ableist language. Jay Manuel steps Behind The Rope. The Man, The Myth, The Legend. Checking in from his home in Connecticut, Jay is here to tell it all. Growing up, Jay was drawn to fashion at a young age. That led him to land in NYC, and the rest is history. Not so fast. Jay didn't take no for an answer during his early career in fashion, pounding the streets, portfolio in hand, which eventually landed him his first cosmetics campaign for Revlon. One day, Tyra's makeup artist missed their flight to NYC and Jay got a call to do Tyra's makeup last minute for the GQ Man of The Year Awards. He ran to her hotel room, she loved the way she looked, and voila, the two started working together consistently after that. Jay is no stranger to working with high profile clients and we discuss a few such as, oh we don't know, Jennifer Lopez. Jay details, and we slow him down to miss nothing, how the idea for America's Next Top Model came about and what his initial reaction was when Tyra ran the idea by him at 3am. We discuss casting and filming. Jay explains the evolution from Episode One when they were just figuring all out to his becoming the official Creative Director on the show, a transition which happened before our very eyes. Jay discusses what it was like to work with some of ANTM's judges such as Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker and J. Alexander. Ahh, Janice! Tune in now to our Part I sit down with Mr. Jay Manuel. He opens up about why he decided to leave the hit show in Cycle 8. He explains what his conversation with Tyra was like when he told her he wanted to leave the hit show and his fear that he may “never work in this town again”. Jay explains how he was convinced to stay after giving notice and the icy environment on set once he decided to stay for another cycle. Yes, Tyra Banks was not at all thrilled nor pleased. We discus the overall toxic environment on ANTM and what it was like to work in that environment for many many years. Jay chat about why he was really ready and really did leave in Cycle 18 of the show. Next, we discuss the book!!! The Wig, The Bitch & The Meltdown. We have so many questions, where to begin. Jay explains why he decided to write this book now and why he chose fiction as opposed to a memoir. We prod Jay to discuss what is fiction in this novel versus what is really, well, real on the set of Model Muse. We discuss some of the bigger issues in the book such as the attraction to fame, the cost of fame, and the abuse of power. Of course, we ask Jay if he has heard from Tyra since writing the book and, if so, what that conversation was like. We also discuss whether he has heard from Janice Dickinson, Miss J and Nigel Barker since the book hit the shelves. We discuss the creative process to writing a book and what Jay discovered about himself throughout the process. Finally, we discuss some of Jay's many other accomplishments such as the E! Red Carpet, which Awards Shows are his favorite, who he would love to sit down and have lunch with and last, but certainly not least, his iconic silver hair. @mrjaymanuel@behindvelvetrope@davidyontefBONUS EPISODES Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetropeBrought to you by BOLL & BRANCH - https://www.bollandbranch.com (15% Off First Set of Sheets - Use Code “Velvet”)Brought to you by BETTER HELP - https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope (10% Off First Month - Use Code "velvet rope") MERCH Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode Bonnie talks with one time America's Next Top Model contestant, author, MTV host, restauranteur, Wall Street bad ass, and long time friend, Kim Stolz. Their parents worked together at Goldman Sachs for 30 years, and Bonnie has watched Kim grow up and seen her many acts - always inspiring, uniquely and unapologetically herself, Kim has done more in her life before 40 than most will ever do. America's Next Top Model Second Runner Up, Eugena Washington, steps Behind The Rope. Checking in from her home in Los Angeles, California, Eugenia is here to tell it all and she DOES - NOT - HOLD - BACK! One day, Eugena saw an “Apply Here” casting call on the CW Website for Cycle Seven of America's Next Top Model. Always being called a Model in High School, she figured “why not” and sent her application in. That one click of a button led to an open casting call of over 2,000 Model Hopefuls. Over the course of two long days, those 2,000 were narrowed down to 50 and so on and so forth until Tyra Banks and The Executive Producers had their Cycle Seven cast chosen. Months later, she got the fateful call telling her to pack her bags and off to the infamous ANTM Model Apartment she went. As prepared as she thought she was, nothing could prepare Eugena for the reality of filming one of America's notoriously most pressure filled reality shows. Pressure filled from the other models as well as pressure filled from Producers who Eugena is clear to point out, “were not our friends”. The 16 hour days with no sleep and cameras in your face the second you woke up certainly did not help at all. Eugena explains how she and the other Models were manipulated by Producers to bring the drama, how everything they said could and would be used against them, and how stressful the weekly eliminations were. Eugena also discusses famed Creative DIrector Jay Manuel as well as judges Janice Dickinson, Miss J, Nigel Barker and Twiggy. Finally, we discuss the woman, the myth, the diva, the legend, The One, The Only, Miss Tyra Banks! We are only getting started. Lisa D’Amato, from America’s Next Top Model, steps Behind The Rope. For everyone who has not heard our Part I chat with Lisa, feel free to check it out on January 19, 2021. Holding nothing back, Lisa is here to tell - it - all!. Lisa D'Amato - Fan Fav from Cycle Five of the hit Reality Show America's Next Top Model, competing for the affection and approval of one Miss Tyra Banks. Lisa chats about what living in the model house was really like, the competitiveness of her fellow model contestants and the pressure she felt from producers while filming. She chats about ANTM judges Miss J, Nigel Barker, Twiggy and last, but certainly not least, Janice Dickinson as well as about Creative Director Jay Manuel. Lisa confirms and debunks many of the vicious rumors heard over the years about the tension on the set and the “my way or the highway” rumored attitude of Tyra Banks. Leaving no detailed spared, Lisa explains how she felt she was treated by Tyra and Producers, the good, the bad, the other. There was a lot of bad and a lot of other. We discuss! She chats about her status as “fan favorite” once the show aired, largely in part due to her outspoken nature. That outspoken nature found her back on ANTM, this time "All Stars”, Cycle Seventeen, which she won. She chats about how life changed as a result of winning ANTM and what came next. That next eventually included her Dare-U-Go! product pitch on Shark Tank, where she got a deal with the one and only Miss Barbara Corcoran. In this episode, my guest, Lisa D'Amato and I discussing very sensitive topics. Talking Points: How did you get on America's Next Top Model? What was your biggest challenge? If you’re comfortable sharing it, how did Tyra Banks used your childhood trauma against you? It’s been bothering you after the show, how did you decide to finally confront her and post the video? Did Tyra provide any explanation How did you come up with such a clever idea for Dare U Go What helped you to get on Shark Tank How was your experience? What lessons have you learned from being on ST How did you decide to learn pole dancing and use it for education Guest Lisa D'Amado @lisa_damato wife and mother of two boys. She was born and raised in Thousand Oaks & Los Angeles, CA. Lisa has been modeling and acting since the early age of 12. She has starred in commercials for GAP, H&M, and Coca-Cola before America's Next Top Model Cycle 5. During her cycle she was coined the phrase "Wild Child" where her image was fun but got distorted drastically. it has repeated consistently to this day even 15 yrs later all over American Television and internationally-being syndicated in over 180 countries. Like many of the other selected 336 contestants that competed on America's Next Top Model, Lisa has a similar story of many of the girls that were mentally manipulated by their childhood trauma during filming. Despite the consistent echo chamber of slander to her character and to say it jeopardized her public image drastically would an understatement. She still managed to take full advantage of the reality TV therapy shows like Celeb Rehab with Dr. Drew where she admits she went on the show for much needed therapy. She knew she needed therapy from childhood trauma AND for possible drug addiction prevention. From there it went down hill with even more vicious headlines due to the stigma of "therapy" and "drug addiction" and "rehab" associated her name in the press. She was never detoxing for anything. Fact, case and point. Switching gears, Lisa focused on her music. She went on to record 3 albums and tour the USA with her album "LA Puchinetta. With Club's Top 20 Hit list "Trainwreck", and "Ace of Spades". The "Can't Touch It" electro- rap singer landed her song on the opening of the hit show "Entourage". She soon fell in love with now husband Adam Friedman. Shortly after, ANTM came knocking at her door to compete in America's Next Top Model All-Stars. She later won a "very controversial" finale against finalist Angelea Preston. Lisa and her husband landed on We Network's "Marriage Bootcamp Reality Stars" and soon after that Bravo's "Interior Therapy" with Jeff Lewis. Lisa and husband have two beautiful boys Daxel, 7 and Venice, 4. She has last been seen on NBC's Shark Tank as the inventor and Ceo of Dare-U-Go!, Lisa landed a deal with Barbara Corcoran. Dare-U-Go! is a 5-in-1 solution to help parents feed their kids! It's a food grade silicone bib, food catcher, air-tight seal food storage unit, divider bowl, and comes with a spork that slides through the back. It's eco-friendly, kids love it and you'll love it even more when applied to your life. Super helpful. That's probably why it's in 21 countries in a little less than 3 years. During quarantine, you can find her on her IG teaching herself pole dancing with her sons. Yep you heard that right. She is learning pole dancing and her little boys as they are becoming pros at it too. "It's pole fitness" she says. Her and her boys are having family fun. She has also gotten political with her researched pole dancing videos that are based around specific topics like "Why do all Republicans have high SDO scores?" Even hitting heavy topics like Climate Change. Lisa D’Amato, from America’s Next Top Model, steps Behind The Rope. Holding nothing back, Lisa is here to tell it all. Starting her modeling career at the young age of twelve, Lisa learned many of the tricks of the trade, which would later help her when she applied to America’s Next Top Model on a dare. That worked out well and Lisa soon found herself on Cycle Five of the hit Reality Show, competing for the affection and approval of one Miss Tyra Banks. She chats abut how life changed as a result of winning ANTM and what came next. That next eventually included her Dare-U-Go! product pitch on Shark Tank, where she got a deal with the one and only Miss Barbara Corcoran. She takes us behind the scenes of Shark Tank and all the shenanigans taking place behind the scenes off camera.@lisa_damato@behindvelvetrope@davidyontefBonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetropeBrought to you by Better HELP https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetropeBrought to you by Trivia Star (a Super Lucky Game). Sarah and Anna were together right before the pandemic, like days before quarantine, and discuss what their last day together was like before never seeing people in person again. Also, we learned that she worked on a blueberry farm for 9 years! 9 years! This is a fascinating episode and I know you'll love it.
