Listen in to a series of conversations led by beloved Triple R broadcasters Lauren Taylor and Simon Winkler in conversation with our Walsh Street Music artists. For the final installment of our Walsh Street Music program, Gregor work his musical magic in a room of legendary architect Robin Boyd's famous Walsh St home. Melbourne prog-pop eccentric Gregor released his debut album Silver Drop via Chapter Music in late 2018, taking the restless, idiosyncratic spirit of his previous sketches and tunes and applying it to his own interior emotional world. Spacious and delicate, but peppered with acerbic pop moments and extended, loping grooves, the album drew together elements of Gregor’s eclectic influences, filtered through his increasingly personal vision. In 2019, Gregor was nominated for Best Album and Best Solo Artist in the Music Victoria Awards. His second album Destiny is due for release in November 2020. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MPavilion & the Robin Boyd Foundation bring you a six part series of live performances from the iconic Walsh Street house. Directed by Freya Esders and shot by award-winning cinematographer Edward Goldner, the series will place an eclectic roster of Melbourne’s favourite musicians in all corners of this architectural masterpiece. The Walsh Street Music Program features the soulful multi-instrumentalist and proud Kuku Yalanji, Jirrbal and Torres Strait Islander woman Kee’ahn, Chinese/Australian composer and guzheng virtuoso Mindy Meng Wang, the beautifully melancholic and ethereal Sweet Whirl, Sudanese born Melbourne bred rapper BabyT, the lo-fi soundscapes of unground cult lovers Sleeper & Snake, and finally Melbourne prog pop eccentric Gregor. Walsh St house is the dwelling that Australian architectural giant Robin Boyd designed as his own family home. As an exemplar of modernist Australian architecture that continues to influence architectural thinking, the house has been the subject of extensive media coverage both nationally and internationally. The house remains unchanged from the time it was first designed and occupied by the Boyd Family in 1959, furnished with pieces designed by Boyd’s associates Grant Featherston, Clement Meadmore and others and then photographed by Mark Strizic. Now home of the Robin Boyd Foundation, the heritage icon provides a unique insight into Melbourne’s design leaders of the 50s and 60s.

In part two of the series Lauren Taylor and Simon Winkler talk to Sweet Whirl. Sweet Whirl is the songwriting project of singer and multi-instrumentalist Esther Edquist. For the Walsh St Project she appears with guitarist Liam Barton and label mate Gregor – also on the Chapter Music record label. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MPavilion & the Robin Boyd Foundation bring you a six part series of live performances from the iconic Walsh Street house. Queer music in Australia is arguably louder and prouder in 2018 than it has ever been—but this modern strength and visibility did not grow out of a vacuum. From singular artists in the ’50s and ’60s to women’s music groups in the ’70s, plus dance hedonism in the ’80s, ’90s and beyond, Australia has a long and rich—but often neglected—history of openly queer music. This panel discussion at MPavilion is a vibrant reflection on Australian LGBTQIA+ musical expression across the decades, featuring renowned political singer and Federal Circuit Court of Australia judge Judy Small; Clitoris Band and Sheila musician Greadann Jack; academic, archivist and Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives volunteer Kathy Sport; DJ, producer, label-owner and club-night originator Gavin Campbell; and Nick Henderson, sound curator at the National Film and Sound Archive. Presented by @chaptermusic, this eclectic MTalks gathers a lineup of pioneering artists, archivists and historians for an afternoon that was half panel discussion, half live performance and DJs—and one hundred percent celebration. http://mpavilion.org/program/chapter-music-presents-australian-queer-music-history/
I was spending a frenzied night at home getting this episode ready and while I was uploading it, a thought came into my head: November 2017 marks the NINTH year of Random Old Records Podcast. Sure, I've taken a few months or even years off at times, but this show remains my favorite hobby in the world. A lot has happened in that time, but I still love finding amazing jams and cutting them together into hourish-long podcasts. Hope you have as much fun listening to them as I do making them! There isn't really a theme to EPISODE #60, except for a focus on newer music. It starts off with an anthem from Montana rockers Mordecai and a tense jangle bomb from Oakland's Rays, then features some non-one-word named bands like Erase Errata (PLEASE check out their reunion record from 2015) and Uranium Club, new tracks from shoegaze legends Lush and Slowdive, and a final section with classic 90s indie pop like World Of Pooh (also PLEASE check out the new reissue of their super-rare LP The Land Of Thirst, it is incredible) and The Spinanes. The other big news this time around is that I have finally rejoined the real podcast world, and you can now SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, and RSS. If you love the podcast and don't want to miss an episode, please click one of the links around the page and sign up now, then consider writing a nice review when you do! Older episodes will also be added back to the feed as time goes on. You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the episode below. Babaganouj: Starting in 2011, Babaganouj have become an absolute songwriting powerhouse in the last 5 years releasing too many singles and EP’s to name, as well as touring the east coast more times than we can keep track of. Their garage pop sound is always dripping with the glowing sunbeams you can expect from a Brisbane band, but what makes them unique is songwriting and vocal duties are shared equally between the three members Harriette Pilbeam, Ruby McGregor, and Charles Sale. They’ve even taken the extra step in this direction by recording three separate EP’s for release this year, with each one written solely by one member. And although they may share the songwriting duties, their songs are always catchy, upbeat, and there to keep the good times rolling. Recorded live at The Foundry in Brisbane on the 20th of March, 2015. Recorded & mixed by Tim Roberts. The Goon Sax: Like their name would probably indicate, The Goon Sax are a teenage trio who write songs about being an awkward adolescent, while still being that awkward adolescent. Their songs cover everything from home haircuts, ice cream, and not being able to work at target. Put simply, they have found a way to turn the mundane pieces of growing up in suburbia and write catchy, jangly indie pop songs about it. Their debut album ‘Up to Anything’, which came out on the Chapter Music label in March 2016, has seen them tour nationally and internationally, and even scored great reviews from international tastemaker publications Pitchfork and NME. Recorded live at The Woolly Mammoth in Brisbane on the 25th of June, 2016. Recorded and mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 11th September 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.

We are proud to present a performance by celebrated singer-songwriter Kath Bloom! Kath Bloom is a legendary American singer-songwriter from Litchfield, Connecticut. In the 1970s she collaborated with Bruce Neumann and recorded with avant-garde guitarist Loren MazzaCane Connors releasing multiple albums of fragile, simple folk and blues melodies that play heart strings and raw nerves like a shaman summoning a beast made of blinding light. She stopped recording new material for a few decades, choosing to raise her children, until Richard Linklater discovered her music sometime in the early '90s and subsequently featured her song "Come Here" in his 1995 film, Before Sunrise. Since then, Bloom has continued to write new songs and has released albums on Caldo Verde Records and Chapter Music. A tribute album entitled Loving Takes This Course was released in 2009 and features artists such as Devendra Banhart, Bill Callahan, and Mark Kozelek. Kath's new album Pass Through Here was recorded over the last three years in Los Feliz and will be released by Chapter Music (Australia) this fall. "Bloom sounds like a woman who has spent years in the wilderness… An earthy, unpretentious presence, she can snap a heart like a twig." – Pitchfork
Beaches: Beaches are an exceptional band – both on record and on stage, so it’s with some pleasure that we bring you an extract from their recent east coast tour of Australia in support of their killer 2013 record ‘She Beats’ that came out through Chapter Music. Mixing in the pysch of the 1970s with elements of shoegaze and straight up rock and roll seeping through, this quintet have been quietly building up a worldwide following over the past half a decade. Expect a dervish of musical escapades. This live recording comes from the band’s visit to Brisbane back in about June 2013 when they played at the Black Bear Lodge. Barbiturates: Barbiturates are Roland Hlavka and Elliot D’arcy, two musicians known for their work in Brisbane psych outfit Cobbwebbs. This particular project emerged from eclectic rehearsal room jams that didn’t quite fit the CV of their former band – and thus the side project was born! Still channeling their DIY roots, Barbiturates sway between pop and psych, adding in generous additions of almost trip-hop sounding beats. They’ve release a bunch of music, but 2013’s Shades was the first actually put out in some kind of material form. Recorded by Murray Paas Mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Zoo, July 2013. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 27 December 2013. Show production and engineering: Darragh Murray.
