Born in Uganda and raised in Kenya, Sos has lived in the U.S. for ten years, learning about the system and how he can build a new life. Despite the challenges, he remains positive and focused on the opportunities and bringing joy through stories. He has written a children's book inspired by his interactions with African Americans. As a Black African, he brings a unique perspective to the Black experience and opportunities in America. Sos has retained his Anglican faith, although he has not found a comfortable Anglican community in Boston. His work in two conservative Jewish synagogues feeds his soul and has opened his heart to better ways of building community. Highlights:· His father had three wives with different religions – Catholic, Muslim and Anglican. Living together was happy and peaceful. · Anglican churches in Boston have a similar service to those in Kenya but worshipping in a mostly white congregation is more restrained. · The most difficult aspect of living in the U.S. as an African is the different system – how to buy a car or a house, and how to transfer his degrees so he can work as a journalist.· Working in the Jewish community soothes his soul. Seeing how the synagogues keep the community together and supporting the service inspires him.· African Americans can succeed in America and have opportunities worth pursuing. · It is better for African Americans to focus on the children's future, rather than the pain of slavery's history. Quotes:“To understand the system is the most difficult thing here in America, so it's not been easy.”“A Black Kenyan in America is not the easiest because African American will identify you as an African. And a white person will not tell if you're an American or you are African unless you speak.”“Praising or worshipping comes from the heart, and you know, me coming from Kenya, people are always smiling. You know, when they sing in church, you feel the joy, you feel the happiness.”“I actually just healed my soul being in those places because you get that spirit of love working there [in the synagogue].”“I'm going through a certain transition from the different system to another system, and I haven't found my system in this place, so Moses is taking me up.” Follow the podcast! The Living Our Beliefs podcast offers a place to learn about other religions and faith practices. When you hear about how observant Christians, Jews and Muslims live their faith, new ideas and questions arise: Is your way similar or different? Is there an idea or practice that you want to explore? Understanding how other people live opens your mind and heart to new people you meet. Jamie was a prominent stand-up comic before he drifted into political commentary, eventually becoming a leading voice among the social justice warrior crowd, with his radio show (Citizen Radio). That ended when he was accused of "inappropriate behavior" and he suddenly found himself the target of the same kinds of uncritical condemnation he'd directed at others. It's been a wild ride, but he's back on his feet, and wiser for it.

"The rejected stone is now the cornerstone..." - Guru Besides putting the sounds and notes together this month, there's been one extra task for the podcast happening in the background that's paid off - it's finally in the iTunes Store! For those of you on iPhones or with iTunes installed on your computer, it's now super-simple to subscribe, just search for the show and press the button. What anyone with iTunes can do - subscriber or not - that would really help is to leave a review (with a five-star rating). Write a five-star review, tweet/mail me when it's up and tell me which country you're from, and I'll give you a shout-out on the show! Some good current affairs/political podcasts, as promised; Citizen Radio, Radio Dispatch, The Black Guy Who Tips (lot of great jokes in this one, but knowledge too), Democracy Now, NWAP
The New Citizenship project wants to challenge the idea of an individual as a consumer - and replace it with the individual as a citizen, using the techniques of marketing and public relations(usually associated with consumerism) to do so. in this latest podcast from Civic Radio, Jo Barratt talks to Jon Alexander and Irenie Wilson, the Directors of the New Citizenship Project. Has the world of commerce encroached irrevocably on our civic spaces, and how much do we care? How much is civic exclusion growing because of what participation demands or expects of us? Civic Radio is on the road, seeking out the people and organisations that are exploring these topics in different ways. The New Citizenship Project is interested in how you create a shift in the dominant story of the individual in society from the Consumer to the Citizen. Subscribe on iTunes to Citizen Radio.. Produced by Jo Barratt. This is the latest podcast in the Civic Radio series. Other podcasts in this series can be found here: Launch of Civic Radio with writer and urbanist Adam Greenfield Social inequality and civic participation featuring Simon Willis, CEO of the Young Foundation At the service of the citizen:redefining civic tech conversation with tech activist Laurenellen McCann Re-imagining local government with Anna Randle of Lambeth Borough Council, London Aral Balkan on being a citizen Can public servants change the face of local government? with Dave Seliger, a New York civil servant. I’ve really fallen behind in getting Succotash episodes out the door so apologies to those of you who have been trained by decades of televison and radio with their regular release of content. I’d love to be more on top of the release schedule but I have a regular fulltime gig which, if I were just sitting here with an open mic and spitballing witty bon mots off of today’s headlines, I could probably pull it off. But on this show I try to bring you snippets and bits from comedy podcasts around the interwebs and around the world and that just plain takes time. So Epi38 is a clipless show BUT I do have a great interview with one of my favorite comedians. Andy Bumatai is from Hawaii and is IN Hawaii and made his name there as well. He gets to the mainland from time to time, which is how I first got to know him. We get into that story in the interview. I recorded my chat with Andy when I was in Honolulu back in September and I was hoping to have it up before now, because it’s got some plugs for a show Andy and some other bruddas from the islands did in the Bay Area and Southern California at the end of October. I was hoping to spread the word but it’s like my whole show is on island time of something. Anyway, you can see Andy regularly now on YouTube with his series In The Car with Andy Bumatai. (Note: Andy's show hit the web a good half year or so before Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee debuted online.) We talk about not just this current project of Andy’s but touch on many of the other shows he’s done over the years that helped to make him as much about Hawaii as pineapple, poi and pupu platters. Speaking of pupus, that’s one of the things mentioned on a t-shirt I’m giving away this episode! Seriously. It’s an artifact of Andy’s – a genuine black tee from a long-defunct live comedy show called Crack Up Thursdayz. The show was at Honolulu's East Side Bar & Grill. I even have a picture here of Andy wearing it. Bear in mind I have ONE, it’s a large and it’s well-worn. But it’s also been well-laundered – Andy left it in my rental car when I drove him to a show when I was in Hawaii in September. Wanna win this timeworn classic? Here's how. Send the number of miles (or kilometers for our metric friends) between San Francisco and Honolulu to me, marc@SuccotashShow.com. I'll draw one name from the correct guesses and mail the winner the Crack Up Thursdayz tee shirt. Be sure to include a mailing address with your emailed entry! I was going to do a show around the 8th Annual Podcast Awards, which the voting on closes November 15th. Perfect self-contained show idea, right? I thought I’d feature clips from the ten shows in the Comedy category but, again, no time. In lieu of playing those clips, here are the shows nominated: Beauty and Da Beast, Citizen Radio, Comedy Bang Bang, File Under Horrible, Metrobuzz, My Brother My Brother and Me, The Green Light Show, The Ramen Noodle, Walking The Room, and WTF with Marc Maron. So get up to http://podcastawards.com and vote before November 15th. (There are a bunch of other shows in other categories as well, but we really don’t care about them here on Succotash, the COMEDY Podcast Podcast.) With the elections upon us, don't forget that our inhouse political comedian and Ambassador to the Middle Will Durst has an ebook out! It’s called Elect to Laugh, a collection of his election year rants and observations, both from his act and from the syndicated column he does. You may even see a few familiar passages that you’d have heard right here on our Burst O’ Durst feature. Get over to Will’s site and grab it there. Early Warning: I'll be a guest on the Functional Nerds podcast next Tuesday night, November 13th, hosted by friend-of-Succotash John Anealio and Patrick Hester. Catch it at 10 PM EST/7 PM PST at http://FunctionalNerds.com or download it later from iTunes! Next episode not only we'll we have a full rack of clips, but I should be joined by special guest co-host Jabs from The DHead Factor podcast, Skypecasting with me from Australia! That's it for now. Until next we meet, please be sure to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

The Sydney Atheists Podcast is back, with a very special interview with comedian Jamie Kilstein. Download the show here Jamie is a stand-up comedian from New York who co-hosts the Citizen Radio podcast, featuring political comedy and stellar interviews. He is currently starring in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Sydney Atheists members often organise group trips to see Jamie's shows when he visits Sydney. This episode was recorded in Melbourne the day after Jamie's frenetic set at the Rise of Atheism: 2010 Global Atheist Convention. Performing before Dan Barker and Richard Dawkins, the set split sides and raised eyebrows. In an hilarious interview, Jamie shares his experience of gigging at the largest ever gathering of nonbelievers, his own path to atheism, his thoughts on the movement of organised atheists, the reception of his material in Australia, his tattoos and much, much more. This unmissable interview was recorded by Dave The Happy Singer for the Skeptic Zone podcast, who released an edited version in Skeptic Zone episode 76. The full uncut interview was too good to go unreleased so we're proud to release it here at Sydney Atheists by kind permission of the 'Zone. Find out more about interviewing Jamie Kilstein at the Global Atheist Convention on Dave's blog.
