On this day, all around the world, women (and some men) marched in solidarity with The Women's March on Washington: a grassroots effort to protest the Donald Trump Presidency, one day after his inauguration) and to stand together in solidarity and to recognize that vibrant and diverse communities are a strength.The sound of a public march has always been moving to me: inspirational chants, solidarity slogans, cries of anger, echoes of hope. In this Ottawa women's march, you hear the slogans ‘no limits for women', ‘the people united will never be divided' and ‘tiny hands, tiny feet, all Trump does is tweet-tweet-tweet'. Hopefully we won't have to protest again on January 21st, 2025.(Ottawa River)Now let's move now to the mighty Ottawa River or the Kichisìpi as it is known in the Algonquin language: This recording was captured on January 29th, 2017, at 1.34pm. Now the Ottawa river is very large: 1,271 kilometers in length with a drain area of 146,300 square kilometers. You're listening to a recording I made west of downtown. The current is strong here and the sound is a deep rumble of rushing water and breaking ice. The recording also includes the high-pitched sound of cross-country skiers along a path by the river. Shall we go inside?(Elevators and office sounds) Ottawa is many things, including a city of office towers and bureaucrats. I love office tower sounds: hums, clicks, echoes, voices, drones, rhythms, patterns, etc. This recording explores the spaces where people enter and exit the building. I love transitions like this. You hear going up and down stairs and elevators, which btw ‘talk' both French and English.(skating on rideau canal)How's about a skate on the infamous rideau canal skateway? It's January 26th, 2017, and we're skating at a rapid pace. Can you feel the wind on your face? Can you feel the rumble of the ice under your feet? The Rideau Canal Skateway is the largest skate way is 7.8 kilometers long). However last year it did not open due to warming temperatures in Ottawa, which is a sign of the times and the reason why I dedicated a lot of my time to promoting the role of art in the climate emergency. Mike Ross is a Canadian announcer and broadcaster. He is the current PA announcer for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He is also news director and a host on AMI-audio. He graduated from École secondaire publique De La Salle in Ottawa and went on to study at Carleton University[1] and volunteered at CKCU, Carleton's campus radio station, where he got his first taste of doing sports on the radio. Soon after, he began working in the promotions department at Rawlco's Energy 1200 and Majic 100 in Ottawa. In 1998, 1200 AM went all sports and Ross became the morning show producer and co-host on OSR 1200. In 1999, when CHUM Limited bought Rawlco's Ottawa stations, he was moved to the afternoon drive show with Duke and the Dandyman. In 2001, CHUM launched a national sports radio network, The Team and hired him to produce the afternoon drive show from Toronto as well as serve as a general sports reporter covering the NHL, CFL, NBA and Major League Baseball.[4] In 2002, when CHUM pulled out of the national sports radio project, Ross moved over to television as an associate producer for Rogers Sportsnet. Ross joined XM Canada's "Home Ice" hockey channel when it launched in 2005 (renamed Sirius XM NHL Network Radio in 2013) [as the producer of the midday show with Jim Tatti and Gary Green. Soon thereafter, Ross became the show's back-up host and co-host who filled in for Tatti or Green. In 2008, Ross became co-host of the main afternoon show, In the Slot with Phil Esposito. From 2009 until 2015, Ross hosted Hockey This Morning along with Peter Berce and Shawn Lavigne. The show was heard weekdays from 7am to 11am. As part of a restructuring of SiriusXM Satellite Radio's NHL Network Radio channel lineup, Ross was let go on October 5, 2015 and replaced by Stellick & Simmer hosted by Gord Stellick and Rob Simpson. From February 2016 until late 2019 Ross hosted Live From Studio 5, a current affairs morning show on AMI-audio for AMI Canada. The show was simulcast on AMI-tv beginning in the fall of 2018.[8] Ross moved behind the scenes to become AMI's news director in December 2019. He continued to host as anchor of The Gazette on AMI-audio,[10] until September 2021 when he became co-anchor of AMI-audio's daily news show, The Globe and Mail Today. In February 2010, Ross was the guest PA announcer for the Ottawa Senators. Earlier in his career, he was also the stadium announcer for the Ottawa Lynx and the arena announcer for the Ottawa 67's. He was also the PA announcer for the 2015 World Junior Hockey Championships at the Air Canada Centre. Ross became the fourth public address announcer in the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs, beginning with the 2016-2017 season.

CKCU's Susan Johnston sits down with Booker Prize nominee Alison MacLeod to discuss Tenderness , an ambitious, spellbinding historical novel about sensuality, censorship, and the novel that set off the sexual revolution. On the glittering shores of the Mediterranean in 1928, a dying author in exile races to complete his final novel. Lady Chatterley's Lover is a sexually bold love story, a searing indictment of class distinctions, and a study in sensuality. But the author, D.H. Lawrence, knows it will be censored. He publishes it privately, loses his copies to customs, and dies bereft. Alison MacLeod recreates the novel's origins and boldly imagines its journey to freedom through the story of Jackie Kennedy, who was known to be an admirer. In MacLeod's telling, Jackie—in her last days before becoming first lady—learns that publishers are trying to bring D.H. Lawrence's long-censored novel to American and British readers in its full form. The US government has responded by targeting the postal service for distributing obscene material. Enjoying what anonymity she has left, determined to honour a novel she loves, Jackie attends the hearing incognito. But there she is quickly recognized, and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover takes note of her interest and her outrage. Kingston's Wayne Grady returns to the Festival for a conversation with Susan Johnston, host of CKCU's Asking for A Friend, about his latest book, The Good Father, his first contemporary novel. Told in alternating perspectives, it comically and tragically reckons with a father and daughter's estrangement, the failures brought on by hubris, the limits of perception and the price we pay for second chances. Every story has two sides, two perspectives. And when it comes to a relationship between a daughter and her father, separated first by divorce and then by both generational gaps and physical and emotional distance, those perspectives can colossally diverge. Such is the case with Harry Bowes and his only daughter, Daphne. Harry is a mild mannered journalist turned teacher turned wine merchant who is content to putter around his home in Toronto eating things straight out of the fridge that both his doctor and his second wife, Elinor, would disapprove of, and procrastinate calling his daughter even though he senses something is amiss. Meanwhile, in Vancouver, Daphne seems intent on a course of nihilism, having gone from being a loving girl to a top student to a hostile young woman who is determined to destroy her life and relationships by self-medicating with drugs and alcohol. When a catastrophic event wrenches them out of their states, one of stasis and one of chaos, Harry and Daphne are forced to examine the ways in which their self-absorption has eroded their connection and discover whether a family's bond is truly ironclad or if their damage is irreparable. Monday was Election Night, and the end of a long campaign that was only 40 days long, but was a tough-fought slugfest that took no prisoners on the hustings, or in the radio booths, of the nation. It's much to the relief of a nation that it's over (for now!), but there was some great stories and insights on CFRU on Election Night that demand to be preserved. From 7 pm to midnight on Monday night Scotty Hertz, Christopher Currie and I were live to air with all the results from coast-to-coast-to-coast. There were a lot of surprises, and some not-so-surprising developments; a lot of bizarre asides, and some interesting side notes along with way as we reached the inevitable conclusion that this is a Liberal minority government, and that's going to have all sorts of implications in the weeks and months to come. On Monday night though, it was all about the vote. Aside from some of the analysis of who won and who lost, you will also hear a discussion about the history of the Communist Party in Guelph, a bit from when Juanita Burnett, the Communist Party candidate herself, stopped by the studio, and you’ll also hear my appearance on the national coverage out of CKCU community radio in Carleton, when I talked to hosts Brendan McLoughlin (co-host of The Filibuster) and Luke Smith (CanQueer: Canada’s LGBT Community Talk Show) about the election from Guelph’s perspective. He has been working within the Montreal Inuit community since getting M.Sc. in Physics. Sara Breitkreutz is a doctoral student in Social and Cultural Analysis whose research interests include theories of place and belonging in the city, anticolonial approaches to Indigenous community-based research, and the role of new digital media in shaping contemporary practices of storytelling, community-building, and self-representation. Nipivut means “our voice”, and is a radio program by and for Inuit of Montreal. It is broadcast partly in Inuktitut, and partly in English. The radio program promotes the Inuktitut language in Montreal and provides a forum for Inuit to publicly discuss community life and issues in the city. This initiative also raises the profile of Inuit among the non-Inuit community in Montreal; creating a positive outlet for cultural awareness in the city. Listen to Nipivut every second Tuesday 6 - 7pm In addition to Sara and Nally, you heard a live performance by Charlie Tumic of his song “I miss you dearly.” Charlie has since passed away and is remembered as a former member of the Charlie Adams band and well-respected local Inuk musician. On the "Traveler's Tips" segment with Norma, we talk about the things you should have in your carry-on luggage that will help you to better travels or even survive the disaster flight. Bring wipes. This summer, as much of the country celebrated Canada 150, there has been much needed discussion about the place of Indigenous people within that context. There has been growing recognition that the ‘founding of Canada' narrative is not accurate and shows disrespect for the real founders of this country — Canada's Indigenous people. Complicating the equation even more, there are many people in this country whose heritage is both Indigenous and settler. Today we're going to hear from three people who question where they belong within that continuum. And to finish off, we'll hear from the founder/producer/host of the Media Indigena podcast, which explores these questions and much more. 1.) Braden Alexander – Braden was the rabble podcast network's 2017 intern. Braden is living in London Ontario and is about to start school at Fanshawe College in a month's time. He is of Metis heritage but doesn't know much more than that because he's adopted. He agreed to talk to us about how this ambiguity and his heritage has affected his life and his journalism. 2.) Heather Majaury and Myrriah Gomez-Majaury – Heather is the writer and performer of This is My Drum, a one woman play that explores questions of identity and belonging, resistance and surrender, partially in dialogue with her late Anishnaabe grandmother (Kokomis). It was performed in Kitchener/Waterloo in 2015.  Victoria Fenner did a documentary with Heather and her daughter for The Green Planet Monitor in 2015.  Today's show features an excerpt of that piece. You can hear the entire documentary here. 3.) Rick Harp – Rick is the founder, producer and host of the Media Indigena podcast. In 2015, rabble.ca invited Rick to be a panelist at the rabble podcast network's 10th anniversary celebration to talk about indigenous podcasting. He didn't have his own podcast at the time, but we could tell he was thinking about it. Less than a year later, he launched Media Indigena. A host/producer with the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network for many years, Rick has also served as Artistic Director for the Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival, was a host and producer for CBC Radio and also worked at CKCU, Carleton University's campus based community station in Ottawa.
