"Sailing Through Sounds: JRad's Revelations & Dylan Surprises"Larry Mishkin    discusses  JRad (Joe Russo's Almost Dead)  December 1st concert  at the Riviera nightclub in Chicago. He talks about the band's unique covers, including Grateful Dead songs, and their ability to recreate the sound of the original artists. He highlight the performance of "Foolish Heart" during a previous show, describing its musical construction and its significance in the Grateful Dead's live repertoire.Delving into the band members' backgrounds, emphasizing their musical talents and contributions to JRad. It provides detailed information about each member's musical history and collaborations, discussing Joe Russo's drumming, Marco Benevento's keyboards, Dave Drywitz's bass, Tom Hamilton's guitar, and Scott Metzger's diverse musical styles. He also reviews JRad's surprise performances, such as their rendition of Bob Dylan's "Tell Me Mama," a song exclusively performed during Dylan's 1966 world tour. Larry expresses surprise at how JRad, despite being younger and not following Dylan in 1966, managed to perform the song so well.Additionally, he briefly touches on the issue of marijuana prohibition on cruise ships, by criticizing the strict enforcement against cannabis use, considering the changing attitudes toward marijuana. The discussion also touches upon ticket availability for concerts by bands like Phish and rumors surrounding potential performances..Produced by PodConx  Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast JRADDecember 1, 2023The Riviera NightclubChicagoJoe Russo's Almost Dead Live at The Riviera on 2023-12-01 : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive Episode title:      JRAD Rocks The Riv in Chicago on 12.1.2023: channel Dylan and Dire Straits                                Happy Birthday Keith Richards (80!) INTRO:                  Foolish Heart                                Track #3                                5:45 – 7:17  SHOW No. 1:      Tell Me, Momma                                Track #4                                0:57 – 2:33 Tell Me, Momma is a song written by Bob Dylan and performed exclusively during his 1966 World Tour with the Band (then known as the Hawks). It was used to introduce the second half of a concert, when Dylan switched from an acoustic solo performance to an electric performance backed by a band. The song was not recorded on a studio album, nor was it ever performed again by Dylan in concert.Dylan's May 17, 1966 live performance of the song was released in 1998 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live 1966, The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert.[1] In 2016, all Dylan's recorded live performances of "Tell Me, Momma" from 1966 were released in the 36-CD boxed set The 1966 Live Recordings, with the May 26, 1966 performance released separately on the album The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert. He studied at the Dartford Technical School and Sidcup Art College. After graduating, Richards befriended Jagger, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, and Brian Jones and joined the Rolling Stones. As a member of the Rolling Stones, Richards also sings lead on some Stones songs. Richards typically sings lead on at least one song a concert, including "Happy", "Before They Make Me Run", and "Connection". Outside of his career with the Rolling Stones, Richards has also played with his own side-project, The X-Pensive Winos. He also appeared in three Pirates of the Caribbean films as Captain Teague, father of Jack Sparrow, whose look and characterisation was inspired by Richards himself. In 1989, Richards was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2004 into the UK Music Hall of Fame with the Rolling Stones. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him fourth on its list of 100 best guitarists in 2011. In 2023, Rolling Stone's ranking was 15th.[1] The magazine lists fourteen songs that Richards wrote with Jagger on its "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list.My favorite “Keith tune” in the Stone's songbook.  1978 version. "Before They Make Me Run" is a song by English rock band the Rolling Stones, featured on their 1978 album Some Girls.English musician, songwriter, singer and recording producer who is an original member, guitarist, secondary vocalist, and co-principal songwriter of the Rolling Stones. His songwriting partnership with the band's lead vocalist Mick Jagger is one of the most successful in history. His career spans over six decades, and his guitar playing style has been a trademark of the Rolling Stones throughout the band's career. Richards gained press notoriety for his romantic involvements and illicit drug use, and he was often portrayed as a countercultural figure.Written by guitaristKeith Richards, the song is a response to his arrest for heroin possession in Toronto in February 1977. The criminal charges and prospect of a prison sentence loomed over the Some Girls recording sessions and endangered the future of the Rolling Stones.[2]In the lyrics, Richards reflects unapologetically on his lifestyle up to that point. The line "it's another goodbye to another good friend" in the first verse can be interpreted as referring to Gram Parsons, Richards's close friend who died in 1973 from a drug overdose,[3] and/or to heroin itself: Richards had sought medical treatment for heroin addiction following his arrest in Toronto, and his resolution to overcome his addiction would be a significant factor in his upcoming trial.[4]Richards recorded the song in five days without sleeping.[5] Originally entitled "Rotten Roll", the song was recorded in a Paris studio in March 1978 during one of Mick Jagger's absences from the Some Girls sessions.[6] The completed track, "a high-energy rock & roller",[7] features Richards on lead vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, and bass; Ronnie Wood on pedal steel guitar, slide guitar and backing vocals; Charlie Watts on drums; and Jagger on backing vocals.Richards first performed the song in concert on the New Barbarians' tour of North America in 1979; it was not until the Steel Wheels Tour in 1989 that it entered the Rolling Stones' concert repertoireSHOW No. 4:                      Romeo and Juliet                                                Track #13                                                1:54 – 3:21 "Romeo and Juliet" is a rock[1][4][5] song by the British rock band Dire Straits, written by frontman Mark Knopfler. It first appeared on the 1980 album Making Movies and was released as a single in 1981.[6] The song subsequently appeared on the Dire Straits live albums Alchemy and On the Night, and later on Knopfler's live duet album with Emmylou Harris, Real Live Roadrunning (though Harris does not perform on the track). The song itself, written by Knopfler, was inspired by his failed romance with Holly Vincent, lead singer of the short-lived band Holly and the Italians. The song speaks of a Romeo who is still very much in love with his Juliet, but she now treats him like "just another one of [her] deals". Knopfler has both stated and implied that he believes Vincent was using him to boost her career. The song's line, "Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him," refers to an interview with Vincent, where she says "What happened was that I had a scene with Mark Knopfler and it got to the point where he couldn't handle it and we split up.  OUTRO:                                Hard To Handle                                                Track #17                                                5:00 – 6:45 Otis Redding recorded Hard to Handle in late 1967, shortly before his death. It was released as a single in June 1968. By 1969, it was being covered by a number of people, and surprisingly, the Dead seem to have been one of the first. If anyone were to think of the least likely groups in ‘69 to cover some funky new R&B, the Dead would probably be on that list. They hadn't shown any interest in picking up new R&B covers since mid-1967, when they started doing Lovelight – since then, they had focused on their original ‘acid-rock' material. Many old covers dropped out of their setlists, and from summer '68 through winter '69, their shows were almost exclusively devoted to Anthem & Live/Dead suite material, with a few new Aoxomoxoa songs dropped in.But by March 1969, they seem to have felt the need for something new – the Live/Dead album was in the can, and their repertoire had not varied much in months. Aside from a couple sluggish, misbegotten renditions of Hey Jude that winter, Hard to Handle was their first new cover song in over a year. Over the course of the spring, they would gradually bring in more cover tunes, bringing back many songs they had stopped playing in previous years, and the shows would start to reflect a wider set of influences.Pigpen probably emulated Otis, and of course this song would have matched his strutting stage persona; it may have been his idea to cover it. The Dead must have known they could not recapture the tight, snappy Stax horn sound of Redding's original, and they didn't even try. Instead they adapted it to their loud, heavy, lumbering two-drum, two-guitar style – of course adding a big guitar solo. Pigpen had a set way of singing the song from the start, closely following Redding's phrasing, which would vary little over the next couple years; but the band would go through some dramatic changes in the way they played the song. (The next year, a bit lighter on their feet, they would also attempt James Brown's ‘Man's World' – not one of his funkiest efforts – but would only play it for about five months.) The Dead had long been fans of Otis Redding – in 1966-67, Pigpen was performing his ‘63 song ‘Pain in My Heart.' (Though the impetus to cover it may have come from the Rolling Stones' version.)Redding came to the Fillmore in December '66 – musicians were clamoring to Bill Graham that he needed to book Otis. When he came, according to Graham, “Every artist in the city asked to open for Otis. The first night, it was the Grateful Dead. Janis Joplin came at three in the afternoon the day of the first show to make sure that she'd be in front… Every musician then into music came.” *The Dead opened for Redding on 12/20/66; the next two nights, other bands opened. (The Dead went to play in Santa Clara.) Bill Graham was permanently impressed: “By far, Otis Redding was the single most extraordinary talent I had ever seen. There was no comparison, then or now... That was the best gig I ever put on in my entire life.” * Janis also mentioned that Otis was a particular inspiration to her. (I believe Ralph Gleason also wrote a review of one of the shows for the Chronicle, which I'd like to see.)When Garcia & Lesh appeared on Tom Donahue's FM show in April '67, they played Otis' cover of ‘Day Tripper' and reminisced about the show. Otis had an 18-piece band with him, and Garcia recalled that Otis did his standard show, “where the band would get up and play some numbers, and a girl singer would come up” and warm up the audience before Otis appeared.Lesh: “It was kind of scary to work with Otis… He tore it up!”Garcia: “Otis is really heavy… He tore the place apart… When he came on stage, it was like the whole place got about six times as big, and the band just got real snappy – it was so fine, and the music was really good.” The Dead debuted Hard to Handle at the Black & White Ball (Hilton Hotel, S.F.) , 3/15/69 – the very first song of the show! In their eagerness to tackle it, they perhaps neglected to rehearse it a few more times… They have trouble keeping together in the precise arrangement, and sometimes stumble around erratically before syncing up again. Garcia plays swooping slide throughout, but seems to have little idea what to do with it, so there's not much of a solo and they just sort of stagger forward aimlessly for a while. Pigpen is also a little confused about the verses. At the end the band thinks Pigpen's finished, but he continues with another verse, so they bring it to an abrupt end. Last played on December 31, 1982 at the Oakland Civic Auditorium.  Played it a total of 120 times.   Other stories:Cruise Ships have a very strict NO CANNABIS rule.  That sucksPhish tix for the Sphere are out. How Workday Adaptive Helps ENMAX with Forecasting CapabilitiesThe Big Themes:Workday Adaptive Planning helps ENMAX discover a single version of the truth: With this software, everyone in the company is working off the same data set and can be used for whatever purpose is necessary.A single view across three applications: ENMAX utilizes Workday Adaptive Planning, Workday HCM, and Workday Financials in congruence, which has removed constraints associated with effective planning.Flexible solutions that empower users: Workday Adaptive Planning can be easily edited or updated and provides users with the information they need, when they need it, to do their jobs effectively. The Big Quote: "Adaptive, that was a real game changer for us, because nobody really questioned the data anymore. There was one source of truth, it didn't matter if you wanted to know what was going to happen next month, or in 2024. You went to the same place, the same version, and everyone edited a single version. So that was really key to us, because now we're able to take all that information disseminated out to the different business areas, and they can use it for whatever purpose they need. The second change was, we have the same characteristics on the data for both our actuals and our plan. And that's one of the benefits of being on Workday for both planning and financials. So the data that's actually reflective of historicals plus board looking looks and feels the same. And so it's a little bit easier to interpret. And so that's been very helpful for us as well."

CDO Matters Ep. 16 | The Death of the Single Version of the Truth with Jeff Jonas

CDO Matters Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 26, 2023 50:40

The truth isn't always black and white. Sometimes, it requires more context and background when attributed to different scenarios and situations. The same can be said about your data and whether a “single version of the truth” can be properly applied to multiple use cases for your business. In this episode, Malcolm interviews Jeff Jonas, the Founder, and CEO of Senzing — a software company on the leading edge of developing “entity resolution” solutions — which solve the growing challenge of uniquely identifying people or objects across multiple systems of duplicate, low-quality data. Malcolm and Jeff discuss how advances in technology are fueling more modern forms of entity resolution, where companies are now able to implement more context-centric approaches to complex matching, particularly within their master data management (MDM) programs. As technical as “entity resolution” may sound, the two uncover the global effect this technology has on people each day — including the job of the Chief Data Officer (CDO). Also known as “disambiguation” or “fuzzy matching,” effective entity resolution allows software systems or data stewards to decipher whether records for Richard Smith and Dick Smith may represent the same person, even when it is not overtly suggested by the data.Jeff describes how entity resolution sits as a foundational component of data within MDM, customer relationship management (CRM), know your customer (KYC), supply chain and every other major business process that relies on accurate, trustworthy data. Jeff correctly notes that aside from horrible customer experiences that may arise from a lack of effective entity resolution, “it creates a lot of waste for companies to think you are two or three people instead of one.” Citing a person's example of having their name represented three distinct times in a hotel loyalty club database, he emphasizes the toxicity that comes with a lack of focus on entity resolution for companies who are trying to be both customer and data-centric. While many companies — particularly those already investing in AI/ML — may be attracted to implementing DIY solutions for entity resolution, Jeff notes that it's “super expensive to build”, especially given the complexity and diversity of data, and even language itself. The ability to understand meaning across objects, cultures, languages and even alphabets is at the core of reliable entity resolution and building bespoke solutions for tackling these complex problems — at scale — is beyond the capabilities or budgets of an overwhelming number of companies. When considering a “single version of the truth”, Malcolm unpacks the 30-year history of large, monolithic enterprise resource planning (ERP) suites that created the mindset of master data only living in a singular place within the organization. Thanks to the democratization of IT, the “single version” mindset is shifting both as a practicality and as a business need. Today, master data can be sourced from a single location while supporting multiple versions of truth based on the use case of that data. In talking about the evolution of large-scale entity resolution, its use in MDM to enable multiple versions of the truth and the legacy requirement to have data stewards manually review records, Jeff notes, “There are definitely times…when you want a human to take a look and make an adjudication. But, I will tell you, in large-scale systems, you don't have enough humans.”Rather than adding more people into data stewardship roles to support higher confidence matching, Jeff advocates the approach of widening the pool of data used by entity resolution processes — beyond just name and address — to make match decisions, including the possible use of third-party data sources. The last few minutes of the conversation go deep into AI/ML, and how these new technologies are used to augment human data stewardship processes. Jeff makes a great case to suggest that most stewardship tasks could be mostly automated, but that many companies are unable to duplicate pure human judgment. Throughout the conversation, Jeff and Malcolm take extremely complex technical issues and make them digestible and relatable to CDOs — consistently refocusing on how using entity resolution is critical to establish truth in an organization, especially when using MDM systems to manage said truth. CDOs who want to have more informed conversations with their technical staff about the role of entity resolution going beyond just “fuzzy matching” will find this episode of CDO Matters highly insightful. Key Moments[3:42] Entity Resolution Defined[7:50] The Impact of Poor Data Quality[11:23] The Death of the ‘Single Version of the Truth'[15:45] Entity Resolution Failures[24:03] Understanding Unique Entities[26:13] The Cost of Being Wrong[29:10] Human Intervention vs. Trust in the Algorithm[32:05] Gaining New Insights with MDM[35:09] Valuing Human Judgment [40:03] The Future of Entity Resolution in Digital TransformationKey Takeaways What Is Entity Resolution? (1:58)“Entity resolution is recognizing when two things are the same…it's [also] called ‘fuzzy record matching', ‘link detection', ‘disambiguation', ‘match/merge' and lots of names. It's been congealing into this term ‘entity resolution' and is being more used. And really, the definition that I would have for it is recognizing when two identities are the same despite being described as different.” — Jeff JonasThe Cost and Complexity of Efficient Entity Resolution (5:15)“This problem [with poor entity resolution] is ubiquitous, and it turns out, is super expensive to build. People think you can hire a little team and do some AI/ML and think you are going to match well. And I am telling you, you cannot create something competitive in five years for twenty million.” — Jeff JonasIs the ‘Single Version of the Truth' Dead in 2023? (13:07)“There are still many people saying you need a single version of the truth…At an operational level [within a company], there are multiple versions of the truth. The way a marketer would define a customer is different than the way somebody in finance may define a customer, particularly B2B, where one would be a ‘sell to' and the other is a ‘bill to,' and they are both correct. A lot of people still think that is what MDM is, and it can be that if you want it to be that, but it doesn't have to be.” — Malcolm HawkerWorking with Multiple Versions of the Truth (14:12)“I think the ‘single version of the truth'…those are the dark ages, the dark days. The truth is you really want systems that can present truth to the eye of the beholder. It's about who the recipient is. But there are two forms of truth: One is about separating ‘who is who?' from which attribute is the best attribute…and how many entities does the organization have? Do you really want marketing to have a different [data] account than finance?” — Jeff JonasHuman vs. Software: The Role of Human Judgment (29:38)“There are definitely times/cases in data when you want a human to take a look and make an adjudication. But I will tell you, in large-scale systems, you don't have enough humans. Second, I will tell you, ‘How does the human do it?' The human is using additional data. It's either data stuck in their head or they're searching it up somewhere…but a lot of times, you have to actually do research…so making these decisions on records with some human intervention is about adding data. And one of the things that we propose is that there are kinds of data that is the initial data needed.” — Jeff JonasAbout Jeff JonasJeff Jonas is not only the CEO and Founder of Senzing but also the Chief Scientist. Since 2016, the organization has provided fast and easy API for accurate data matching. For more than 30 years in the field, he has been at the forefront of solving big data problems for both companies and governments. The Myth of Single Version of the Truth

Steve reads his Blog

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 2, 2022 7:09

I've heard this term bandied about for many years now, "Single Version of the Truth". As Jack Nicholson once said, "You can't handle the Truth!" I would paraphrase that as, "You can't afford a Single version of the Truth, and you wouldn't want it anyway!". So, let's see how many of you I can get to agree on this one :). What is Implied? From a business standpoint, "Single Version of the Truth" or SVT, is often pimped as this utopian idea that all of your data, about everything to do with your customers and your business is in one place. providing the coveted 360-degree customer view. First, no such Utopian application can be subscribed to from anyone on this planet today. However, you can subscribe to several applications and potentially spend an enormous sum of money and time to wire them all together, giving the illusion of a SVT. While some of you might be sad to hear that SVT is not "push-button", I will try to cheer you up by saying you would not want it anyway. Silos are Bad! Yes, if you read back on my blog, you will see me also preaching that data silos are bad. In fact, I used the same post image for this post. But that was then, and this is now. Back in the days before the Power Platform, when all we had was Dynamics 365, we also sang Microsoft's tune of the time that "You want all of your data in one place", meaning in a Dynamics 365 database. This was a strong argument for a customer who was considering multiple point solutions made by vendors other than Microsoft. And we had a great deal of success consolidating those multiple point solutions under a single Dynamics 365 umbrella. But to call that a SVT was a stretch. Maybe "Fewer Versions of the Truth" with a 245-degree view of the customer was a more realistic goal, as that was typically the outcome. Dynamics Silos Even under the Dynamics 365 brand there were, and still are, silos. Dynamics 365 Sales runs on top of Dataverse, while Dynamics 365 Business Central or Dynamics 365 Finance run on their own databases. Dual-write is an ongoing effort to create the SVT illusion. Power Platform The Power Platform arrived and blew up the whole concept of SVT. Even Microsoft started singing a different tune, promoting their Center of Excellence "COE", so you could more easily manage the possibly thousands of environments (aka Data Silos) that users could now create in your enterprise tenant. So, is SVT dead? The problem was never with "Point Solutions" and their siloed data, it was with "Point Solutions" and silos from other vendors. With the Power Platform, Microsoft created a rocket engine to crank out "Point Solutions"... but these would be "inside the wall". Silos are Good! So now let me be my own devil's advocate. I will take our own organization, Forceworks for example. The Sales side of our business watches over AppSource prospects and website prospects etc. You can probably imagine that with over 50K users of our RapidStartCRM app, that means there were way more prospects than that, who did not move forward. So, we have thousands of prospects and most of these will never amount to anything, of course. Not unlike any other business where the number of prospects is typically exponentially higher than the number of actual customers. The Services side of our business works with our actual customers, not every RapidStartCRM user becomes a customer. Our customers are organizations who have engaged us to support or customize not only RapidStartCRM, but also Dynamics 365 or anything Power Platform related. So, our Service database is a fraction of the size of our Sales database. In our case, Sales runs on a customized version of RapidStartCRM in one environment, and Service runs on another customized version of RapidStartCRM in another environment. The rationale? Why should the service team have to navigate around thousands of irrelevant records?  If they are not customers, they don't need to be in the Service silo. But what about Synchronization! Much of "Synchronization" is unnecessary hype. Yet many organizations pay us tons of money to try to achieve it. Flow can handle 90% of what is actually useful. For example, when a prospect in our Sales solution becomes a customer, a simple flow creates the record in the Service solution. If a service customer asks about a new app or service, a simple flow in the service app updates the record in the Sales solution. Unintended Consequences If you have not yet built a flow that acted beyond the scope of what you intended... you have not bult enough flows. Both of our environments have multiple flows, many quite complex, automating a bunch of things. Were all of these in a single environment, the chances of a Service flow accidently scooping in some Sales records for example is much higher. So, flow development becomes much more complex. But what about my 360-degree view of the Customer? Let's face it, you are not going to get around the fact that you will have multiple sources of data. At least with Microsoft, it is possible to have all of those data sources under one roof, which I do not believe can be provided by any other company today. If you really want that 360-degree view, yet another application can give you that, Power BI (Microsoft's Business Intelligence app). Power BI can not only connect, munge together and regurgitate beautiful charts and graphs using data from all of your Microsoft sources, it can bring in most of your external data sources as well. I would still argue that the "360-Degree view" is over-rated, the only positions that might actually need that are very high senior management, and we all know they don't look at data anyway... unless it supports a personal agenda. So that's my take on this. If you are looking to shovel money to someone in pursuit of this dream, hit me up. Or if you just want business applications that "work" for your business, you can also hit me up. Feel free to leave any comment you like, as long as it supports my personal agenda, I am a CEO after all :)
