On this week's episode, we talk about the simple struggles we deal with on a daily basis. Finding the balance between work schedules and personal lives. https://podtasticaudio.com/easy https://www.kristinesmithdesigns.com/ Then we are joined by Clint Hatton. From being a former drug addict and divorced in his late twenties to a pastor to losing his 17-year-old son in a tragic plane crash to inspiring people to be courageous humans. He has lived a very layered life. At 12 years old he faced living with a mother that suffered from suicidal ideation, which on two occasions almost cost him his own life. During our 20-year marriage together, Amárillys and him have experienced a miscarriage and two sons born prematurely (Gabriel at 3 lbs 12 ozs & Liam at 1 lb 14 ozs) because of her life (and theirs) being threatened by a pregnancy disease. While giving birth to their middle son Joel, they had another close call as she had great difficulty waking up from the anesthesia. There have been many other scary moments and setbacks. There have also been some amazing experiences and victories! All of these challenges helped prepare him for the greatest blow of losing his oldest son to tragedy. There are foundational mindsets, values, and character traits he have lived by that have empowered him (and his family) to be resilient and thrive again no matter what life throws at us! From being a former drug addict and divorced in  late twenties to a pastor to losing his 17- year-old son in a tragic plane crash to inspiring people to be courageous humans. Clint have lived a very layered life. At 12 years old he faced living with a mother that suffered from suicidal ideation, which on two occasions almost cost him his own life. During his 20-year marriage together, Clint and his wife Amárillys have experienced a miscarriage and two sons born prematurely (Gabriel at 3 lbs 12 ozs & Liam at 1 lb 14 ozs) because of her life (and theirs) being threatened by a pregnancy disease. While giving birth to their middle son Joel, she had another close call as she had great difficulty waking up from the anesthesia. There have been many other scary moments and setbacks. There have also been some amazing experiences and victories! All of these challenges helped prepare Clint for the greatest blow of losing his oldest son to tragedy. There are foundational mindsets, values, and character traits he  have lived by that have empowered him (and his family) to be resilient and thrive again no matter what life throws at them.Clint's mission is to develop Courageous Humans that desire to live Inspiring Lives!https://www.bigboldbrave.us/book-clintThank you to BetterHelp for sponsoring this episode. We live in a world where pleasure and pain are constantly at odds. For many of us, trying to find the balance between these two extremes can be difficult, leading to unhealthy habits like binge eating, drug abuse, or out-of-control eating. The quest for pleasure and avoidance of pain may have us neglecting our own physical and emotional well-being. Jha Effect on Emotions On the fourth of July, we were in Florida, where my father-in-law lives. We went out on his boat and there were a bunch of boats right on the beach. My wife is Puerto Rican and there was music and six boats. There were all these Puerto Ricans singing and dancing and having a great time. All of a sudden I began to recognize that emotionally, I was really beginning to miss Gabriel. That's when mindfulness kicked in. I knew at that moment that I needed to feel what I was feeling. And because of what was going on all around me, I could do it without interrupting or affecting anything else going on. Everybody was either in a floaty right on the beach or in the shallow water. So I just bobbed 20 or 30 feet away from everybody, and nobody even noticed because of all the fun happening. And I put my intention on what I was feeling about my son, and I wept. I allowed myself to be intentional at that moment and just think about him and what I missed about him. Tears came down my face and that lasted for probably about 30 to 40 minutes. I used mindfulness to become present at that moment. So to me, it's a simple, but profound example of how mindfulness can really help you manage your life and even your emotions. Thoughts on Breathing There's a neuroscientist that I'm listening to, that actually has an episode that just came out this last week, and it's like a two-and-a-half-hour episode on breathing. I'm certainly no expert, although I've been aware for some time that the way we breathe is incredibly critical. If you're being mindful of what you're feeling as you're doing things, I can feel my chest even get a little bit tight, and my breathing changed a little bit. I grew up with asthma and had severe asthma up until my mid-20s. So I know what it's like to be in that position where you can't breathe at all and that weight that's on the inside of your chest. It's a very simple technique. I just breathe into my nostrils and blow out through my mouth. I just do that a few times. And I'm discovering now that I'm becoming a student of breath, that's actually one of the most effective tools that you can use to eliminate stress or anxiety. Suggested Resources Book: Peak Mind: Find Your Focus, Own Your Attention, Invest 12 Minutes a Day By Amishi P. Jha App: NSDR Protocol (Non-Sleep Deep Rest) Bullying Story I never got bullied myself but I do have a recollection of times where I bullied others. Back in those days, it wasn't this thing where I honed in on one person and bullied them every single day for months or years. It wasn't that, but also I don't want to belittle it. Even one time could have been enough to impact that person's life forever. Years later, I had an opportunity with at least one person through Facebook, I saw them, and I was able to apologize 20-30 years later for my part. Back in those days, I think some things were going on with my parent's marriage. If I'd had mindfulness, I think it would have made a huge difference, because I would have been able to just stop that angry emotion. And think through the consequence of punching somebody or just pushing them around or whatever the damage that could cause them. I have lived a very layered life. At 12 years old I faced living with a mother that suffered from suicidal ideation, which on two occasions almost cost me my own life. During our 20-year marriage together, Amárillys and I have experienced a miscarriage and two sons born prematurely (Gabriel at 3 lbs 12 ozs & Liam at 1 lb 14 ozs) because of her life (and theirs) being threatened by a pregnancy disease. While giving birth to our middle son Joel, we had another close call as she had great difficulty waking up from the anesthesia. There have been many other scary moments and setbacks. There have also been some amazing experiences and victories! All of these challenges helped prepare me for the greatest blow of losing my oldest son to tragedy. There are foundational mindsets, values, and character traits I have lived by that have empowered me (and my family) to be resilient and thrive again no matter what life throws at us!  My mission is to develop Courageous Humans that desire to live Inspiring Lives!

He has been coaching individuals and teams for over twenty years with a proven track record of helping people grow personally, achieve success, and build healthier marriages and relationships. Clint recently published his first book, Big Bold Brave: How to Live Courageously in a Risky World. It contains wisdom and strategies he's lived by to thrive despite his greatest personal loss. Topics include healthy mindsets, changing limiting beliefs, the power of collaboration, overcoming fear, making courageous decisions, and a commitment to health, fitness, and spiritual and emotional intelligence. In this episode we discuss: 1)  How when facing a personal trauma, even in those dark moments we still have a choice in how we choose to show up, be seen and how we respond to life in those moments.  This is never without pain, or numbing or avoiding the pain, it simply means that we can feel the pain of loss (not expecting it to disappear) and choose to respond in a way that can move us forward. 2) The power of finding gratitude even in the moments to shift and move us forward as well as the power of sharing our stories.  This is an incredibly powerful episode and example of sharing a difficult story and using that pain to create a purpose and a solution for others.  .
