South suburban politician Tiffany Henyard threw a party over the weekend that included a heavy serving of damage control. “Let me make sure I'm crystal clear about this: I ain't never took a goddam thing in my life,” Henyard told Facebook viewers during a livestream from the outdoor gathering. The event was promoted as the “Friends of Tiffany A. Henyard Picnic,” which immediately set off alarm bells among her opponents, who noted that “Friends of Tiffany A. Henyard” is also the name of the embattled politician's campaign fund. Trustees in Dolton – where Henyard is the mayor – and in Thornton Township – where she's the supervisor – tried to block efforts to have public money pay for the gathering. However, WGN Investigates noted food boxes from the township were given away to attendees and the event was held at a Dolton skating rink Henyard built; but a rink that critics say is rarely used.

In this week's episode of the Get Lit Minute, your weekly poetry podcast, we spotlight the life and work of poet, W.E.B. Du Bois. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was an American sociologist, civil rights activist, and historian. Throughout his career, Du Bois was a founder and editor of many groundbreaking civil rights organizations and literary publications, such as The Niagara Movement and its Moon Illustrated Weekly and The Horizon periodicals, as well as the hugely influential National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and its monthly magazine The Crisis. An adamant socialist and peace activist, his writing for these journals was pointedly anti-capitalist, anti-war, and pro-women's suffrage, on top of his core pursuit of the dismantling of systemic racism and discrimination. Possessing a large and hugely influential body of work, Du Bois is perhaps most notably the writer of the authoritative essay collection The Souls of Black Folks (1903) and his monumental work Black Reconstruction in America 1860–1880 (1935). Du Bois never stopped fighting for and evolving his beliefs, joining the Community Party at the age of 93. This episode includes a reading by Austin Antoine of Du Bois' poem, “The Song of Smoke” featured in our 2023 Get Lit Anthology.“The Song of Smoke”I am the Smoke KingI am black!I am swinging in the sky,I am wringing worlds awry;I am the thought of the throbbing mills,I am the soul of the soul-toil kills,Wraith of the ripple of trading rills;Up I'm curling from the sod,I am whirling home to God;I am the Smoke KingI am black. I am the Smoke King,I am black!I am wreathing broken hearts,I am sheathing love's light darts;Inspiration of iron timesWedding the toil of toiling climes,Shedding the blood of bloodless crimes—Lurid lowering 'mid the blue,Torrid towering toward the true,I am the Smoke King,I am black. I am the Smoke King,I am black!I am darkening with song,I am hearkening to wrong!I will be black as blackness can—The blacker the mantle, the mightier the man!For blackness was ancient ere whiteness began.I am daubing God in night,I am swabbing Hell in white:I am the Smoke KingI am black. I am the Smoke KingI am black!I am cursing ruddy morn,I am hearsing hearts unborn:Souls unto me are as stars in a night,I whiten my black men—I blacken my white! What's the hue of a hide to a man in his might?Hail! great, gritty, grimy hands—Sweet Christ, pity toiling lands!I am the Smoke KingI am black.Support the showSupport the show
How does China terrorize Christians? ChinaAid President and founder Bob Fu recently sat down with Higher Ground to expose some of the extreme steps the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is taking to “erase Christianity from China,” including crippling fines and imprisonment.Plus, Finnish politician Paivi Rasanen's “1984”-esque nightmare continues to unfold, as she's punished for sharing Bible verses, among other free speech issues. In a plot seemingly ripped from the pages of an Alfred Hitchcock script, Ms. Rasanen, a member of the Finnish parliament who previously served as the nation's interior secretary, was brought up on “hate crimes” charges for simply expressing her Christian beliefs.Hear these stories on this week's "Higher Ground With Billy Hallowell."FOLLOW BILLY ON SOCIAL MEDIA:- Follow Billy on Twitter- Follow Billy on Instagram- Follow Billy on Facebook

Today I talked to Andrew Small about his book No Limits: The Inside Story of China's War with the West (Melville House, 2022). Winston Churchill famously described Russia in 1939 as “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.” But as Andrew Small correctly argues here, China's path forward has often been laid out quite explicitly by its authoritarian leader Xi Jinping in speeches to the Community Party and elsewhere. The totality of those proclamations is that a real battle lies ahead, perhaps even in military terms. Will China continue to back Russia? Will China ultimately invade Taiwan? Why should Western companies be singularly allowed to decide whether to share their advanced technology with China? Where to draw the line between economic reward and risk in a global economy that is nevertheless splintering in significant ways. Those and more topics get covered here by a guest who is currently based in Berlin but has spent considerable amounts of time in Beijing. Andrew Small is a senior transatlantic fellow with the Asia program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States. His previous book, The China-Pakistan Axis, received broad praise from the likes of the New York Review of Books, The Economist, and Foreign Affairs. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of ten books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. (https://www.sensorylogic.com). Founded in 1985 , The Community Party contested the 1985 Local Elections for Letterkenny UDC and had a Councillor elected. This episode also covers the debate around slot machines in Donegal in that period.
Scott Morrison and Peter Dutton are keen to mention the Community Party of China at every opportunity and how terrible they are – ignoring the fact that China is Australia's number one trading partner and Australian athletes recently competed at the Winter Olympics in Beijing (so surely it can be all that bad) – and making the link between bad China and the Labor Party, especially its leader, Anthony Albanese. And creating that link between Albanese and pinko-communist-leftist-Maoist-Guevarian-socialist thoughts, all because (allegedly) he glanced at the Communist Party of Australia's newspaper, The Tribune, at some point in 1992. The Liberal Party support team at News Corporation did fall short of calling for the execution of Albanese for thought crimes against the state, but the sentiment was there. An incident between an Australian Defence Force aircraft and a Chinese vessel in international waters in the Arafura Sea was magnified in the media and by the federal government – we still are not sure what occurred – but who's got time for the facts when there's an election to be won. And if the electorate tires from hearing about ‘China', there's always an opportunity to drag Australia into the Russia–Ukraine conflict, even though it's not within Australia's field of interest.Yes, we need to be concerned about Russia's invasions in Ukraine, but it's a complex situation based on old Soviet Union politics, history, imperialism, economics and control of resources. But that doesn't matter: it‘s an opportunity to push Australia towards a ‘khaki' election, which the Coalition believes it has a stronger chance of winning, as well as being about to promote the idea that Albanese is ‘weak on border protection'. But will it work? The Liberal Party seems to be at war with everyone and when they've cycled through the usual suspects – China, communists, the Greens, Labor, pensioners, welfare recipients, the poor – they return to an old and trusted enemy: the unions. A shutdown of Sydney's train system was caused by the NSW Government, with the intention of blaming the unions.Australia is poorly served by its mainstream media, and the Sydney Morning Herald provided a fine example of this when they pushed the idea that it was strike action caused by unions (no, it was a lockout by the NSW Government), and this provided attack points for Morrison over the next few days against unions – it's a pity that it was all incorrect, but that was never the point. It allowed Morrison to push the message about life under an Albanese government – train strikes every day of week; misery; inconvenience; something about communism and the left.In Morrison's dystopia, there are no shades of grey, just Neanderthal simplicity: Scomo, good. Albo, bad.And David Lewis catches up with Ryan Bruce, who is the candidate in Aston for The New Liberals: we find out about his campaign, and what The New Liberals are all about and what the future holds for them.
Australia is considering not sending any government officials to the Beijing Winter Olympics next year, as concern grows over the welfare of Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai. The United States, UK and Canada are considering a diplomatic boycott to protest China's human rights record, in particular its treatment of Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet.
Chinese President Xi Jingping gave a rousing speech to an overflowing crowd today in Tiananmen Square on the 100th anniversary of the founding of China's Communist Party. President Xi certainly remains popular in China and so does his party. And, as parts of the US bake under extreme temperatures, we turn to Ahmedabad, a city that has made a huge investment in combating urban heat. Today, Turkey formally ended its participation in a European treaty to prevent violence against women. Also, the White House coronavirus response coordinator gave an update Thursday: 40 million doses will have shipped out by the end of this week to more than 40 countries.
Were back-la! It's the final episode of season 2! You have Nicque and Amil on this episode talking about "Being Soft and Being Hard" well random shnitz (mostly about TikTok) while drinking. In "What's the Tea?", we have Buknoy (again) and Gabo, the Community Party (updates), and Red Tagging. #TheRainbowBarkada #FollowTheRainbow #ShareTheRainbow #LearningExperience

Chinese government deploys troops that massacre citizens in Tiananmen Square. In 1981, Hu Yaobang became China’s leader when he was appointed the Communist Party’s general secretary. Hu was deposed in 1987 when the party accused him of being soft on college students who had been demonstrating in favour of political reforms and against system-wide corruption. When Hu died in April of 1989, people gathered in Tiananmen Square, located in the centre of Beijing, to honour his legacy and voice dissatisfaction with the pace of reforms. When Premier Li Peng refused to meet with student representatives, and the Community Party newspaper’s editorial accused them of trying to overthrow the government and socialism, students from 40 campuses boycotted classes and marched on Tiananmen Square. On May 20, the government declared martial law on Beijing, only to find tanks and troops kept at bay by defiant students and citizens. At its peak, the protest involved one million people occupying the square. As the government made plans to crush the gathering, protesters unveiled a 10-metre-high structure named the “Goddess of Democracy” on May 30. On the night of June 3, 1989, and into the early hours of June 4th, the government tanks and troops moved into the square and killed 2,600 citizens, according to a Chinese Red Cross estimate. Many more were imprisoned. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
