Student Pastor Mike Massaro - "A Different Mindset" (1 Corinthians 2:10-16) | This message was from our 10:30 AM Worship Service on December 31, 2023. If you want to dive deeper into today's sermon, check out our "Beyond the Sermon" series which is released every Wednesday.
Flywire CEO Mike Massaro does not take credit for building the once-struggling tech startup into a global, publicly traded company. The credit goes to the company's “flymates,” aka employees, Massaro shares in the latest episode of PNC C-Speak. Massaro, who once considered himself unprepared for the job and thought he'd be “the shortest-tenured CEO in the history of tech CEOs,” was the recipient of the 2019 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in financial services. During Flywire's early days, Massaro says, the company's culture was unearthed but not defined. Now it's part of the organization's core values. So are diversity, equity and inclusion. Massaro credits Flywire's Chief People Officer Gary Cunningham with making him realize “if you can solve for equity and inclusion, you will inherently become more diverse.” These days, Massaro considers Flywire to be a “uniquely diverse company.”Listen to the episode to hear more about how Massaro worked toward building a great culture at Flywire; the best advice he has been given; his outlook on Boston business; and what makes him laugh these days. This week, Mike Massaro shares how important it is to set the narrative. Mike's quote was, “If you don't set the narrative, the narrative is going to be set for you.” In this episode you will learn: How transitioning from a private company to a public company created an entirely new audience to communicate to and how to embrace the challenge. Making sure that you communicate in various ways so that employees feel comfortable when they are listening to your message. Understanding what motivates a team and what they ultimately want. It isn't how many times you say something, it's how many times it resonates. 24 Hour Challenge: What makes you feel fulfilled? Write down the top three things that make you feel fulfilled both professionally and personally. If you are not fulfilled, figure out why. The app that Mike mentions in the episode: https://bigvu.tv/ About Mike Massaro: As CEO of Flywire (Nasdaq: FLYW), Mike Massaro has grown the business from a concept into a leading payments enablement and software company. In this week's episode, we finally get to have the CIA plant himself, Stand-Up Comedian Mike Massaro on the podcast for a strictly CONSPIRACY themed episode. This one was such a doozey, the CIA or the FBI or the NSA tried to deystroy the podcast while we were recording it, but we thwarted their plans to supress this neccesry information. Here are some links Mike provided for context and so our conspiracy-minded listeners can see the sources. My guest on episode 198 has a passion for going after the big problem and doing what people think can't be done, as well as a genuine intrigue with the power that disrupted companies can have on just about any individual. In fact, Flywire CEO Mike Massaro likens the time spent in fintech companies to dog years: It may be five years on paper but in terms of experience, it really is so much more. This episode is sponsored by Citizens Pay. With Citizens Pay, merchants have the security of a leading national bank and an omnichannel platform designed to streamline the buying process. If you want to learn more about Citizens Pay, visit https://citizensbank.mvk.co/2hycr where you can find additional information about Citizens Pay and the buy now pay later payment model. For those of you who may not know, Flywire is a fintech company that sits at the intersection of software and payments. They offer best-in-class, enterprise-grade software for specific industries, as well as cutting-edge payments technology. Their target market consists of clients in industries that have been left behind and their ultimate goal is to digitize these industries and bring them up to speed with more modern offerings when it comes to their back-office capabilities.Originally going to market as a payments company specifically for the education sector called Peer Transfer, Flywire went from a startup model with roughly 30 employees and hundreds of thousands of dollars in potential revenue to a publicly traded company with thousands of “flymates” and hundreds of millions of dollars in potential revenue. As for their competitive advantage, they cater to the market need with market-leading experts and cutting-edge technology versus generic solutions backed by generic teams.Tune in to hear Mike talk about his journey to CEO, why he refused the offer at least twice before saying yes, and where he sees the industry going in the next 2 to 3 years including more payment methods and a back-office protocol that functions seamlessly without requiring multiple system integrations to support it.

Davey Segal welcomes on pit reporter Mike Massaro (9:10) to discuss his extensive career in motorsports broadcasting. Starting in the Northeast at Stafford Speedway, Massaro outlines why he gravitated towards the microphone rather than a steering wheel, tells some hilarious stories from the track involving legends Mike Joy and Jack Arute and how that sent him on a path to work in racing. He also details his first time meeting Dale Earnhardt while auditioning for MRN Radio, his time at Inside NASCAR on TNN, how Allen Bestwick helped him land that job along the way, landing at ESPN to help spearhead their NASCAR coverage and the unthinkable first assignment he was put on: the 2001 Daytona 500. Massaro explains why coverage at the event was a logistical nightmare, how they navigated it, the delicate nature covering an event like that race takes, lessons learned that year and how they were applied in 2014 while covering the Tony Stewart/Kevin Ward Jr. incident. After leaving ESPN due to the NASCAR television rights change, Massaro landed at NBC Sports for a short period of time. He explains why he left that job for the betterment of his own mental health, but why he wishes he didn't all these years later. He also discusses the here and now: being back on pit road for MAVTV covering the ARCA Menards Series with many familiar faces, how that opportunity came up and how good it felt to put the headset back on. Plus, what is there still left for him to accomplish in broadcasting? Davey briefly touches on Denny Hamlin's Richmond Raceway victory, provides an update on his time dealing with COVID-19 and Papa Segal pays homage to "The King Maker."

You can Subscribe to this podcast and stay up to date on all the stories here on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and iHeartRadio In this episode John talks with Mike Massaro, CEO of Flywire. This is one of a few interviews that we recorded on site during Boston fintech week. In this episode Mike shared a story that is basically every business leader's worst nightmare. After burning through $6,000,000 and having the company close to bottoming out, Mike was extremely close to relaying that information to one of his most important stakeholders; his wife. Luckily (luck being defined as dedication and focus) and against all odds he was able to raise an A round that kept the company afloat and on track to the giant it is today. Mike admitted that it was mis-allocation of funds that was the result of chasing too many opportunities and not focusing fully on the missions/goals that would make a difference. Most investors would not fund this company given the state it was in at that time, but Spark Capital and F-Prime believed in Flywire and did. There's a fascinating story behind it all and was discussed during this episode. Tune in and Listen.
