It's the shock of the new as the boys take on three 2022 releases that stretch our heads in various directions, including a solo guitar outing, a visit to a mythical cave, and a trumpet excursions that goes even stranger places. After that, a chill-out album from Blue Note is a welcome change of pace if nothing else. Pop matters delves into this year's edition of the Chicago Jazz Fest, so stay tuned. And watch out for those falling trees. Gordon Grdina – ODDLY ENOUGH THE MUSIC OF TIM BERNE; Tony Malaby – CAVE OF WINDS ; Natsuki Tamura – SUMMER TREE; Gerald Clayton – BELLS ON SAND.
Featuring the new single from internationally acclaimed saxophonist Shabaka; the masterful Catalan guitar stylings of Oscar Peñas; Danish six-string wizardry courtesy of Thor Madsen aka Thor de Force; CDMX meets Tejas on Sly5th Ave and Roberto Varestegui's collab “Agua de Jamaica”; the mesmerizing atmosphere of Jon Solo's “Naneum” solo project; NJ/NYC sax colossus Tony Malaby and Sabino; NOLA electro-pop duo Say Sway; and finally, two Mount Rushmore nominees: Ella Fitzgerald and Coleman Hawkins.
The beautiful debut album of an emerging artist like Zoh Amba [pictured], previously unreleased tracks from the legendary Village Vanguard concerts by Geri Allen, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, the edgy new project by Vincent Peirani and the guitar saxophone interactions of Walter Smith III & Matthew Stevens, Dave Gisler & David Murray, and Tony Malaby & Ben Monder are just some of our favorite things of this month. The last eighteen months have affected Tony Malaby's music and personal life in a drastic manner. An early bout with covid created a necessity for Malaby to retool his saxophone playing from a physical standpoint and at the same time it created the space for him to revisit the music that informed his playing in his earlier years. In this episode of LINER NOTES Tony speaks about the music that he created in this time, his new position of professor of saxophone at the Berklee College of Music, as well as a new record on Sunnyside Records recorded live at the 55 Bar with guitarist Ben Monder and drummer Tom Rainey, the week before the shutdown last March.

Every age has a number of defining musicians, who stand-out for their innovations and distinctive voices. For us growing up musically in the 1980s and 1990s and interested in forward looking music Bill Frisell is one of these foundational figures. His instrumental style is certainly unique and has shaped the way the following generations have approached the guitar, and--more and more so--his compositions are being embraced by his peers. His tunes integrate sources as diverse as country music, rock, pop, surf music or American contemporary and classical music into jazz. They contain many familiar traits which are hard to pin down because they've been revisited through Frisell's original vision, creating a brand of Americana that has become influential well beyond the confines of the US. With tunes like "Throughout" or "Strange Meeting" having been covered by tens of musicians, Bill Frisell' songbook is becoming as influential as his instrumental style Here we'll explore renditions of his songs by Michael Gibbs; Wayne Horvitz; Unscientific Italians; Elvis Costello and Metropole Orkest; Molly Johnson; Steve Argüelles; Aljosa Jeric; Charlie Haden; Tony Malaby; Noël Akchoté; Dylan-Thomas Vance and Griff Bear; and Jerry Douglas.
