GUEST HOST: Sheila Gunn Reid Justin Trudeau's friend Craig Kielburger tried to nickel and dime the Canadian taxpayer during his time on the debates commission. Then GraceLife Pastor James Coates on his new book, God vs. Government.
Marc and Craig Kielburger's WE Charity routinely misled school-aged children and wealthy philanthropists across North America for years as it solicited millions for schoolhouses in Kenya in its Adopt-A-Village program, an investigation by CBC's The Fifth Estate has found. WE denies it has misled donors. Today, Mark Kelley explains what the team found over the course of the investigation, and the obstacles they faced while reporting the story.
Craig Kielburger was the Greta Thunberg of the 90s – a 12 year-old kid from the suburbs who dreamed of freeing the world's children from slavery. His activism made him famous, and he was endorsed by Oprah, the Pope, the Queen, and the Clintons. His campaign became a global movement and a powerful brand. But right from the start, there were uncomfortable questions about money and exploitation. Decades later, it all came crashing down. But the seeds of WE's self-destruction were planted right from the start… Official responses from WE: According to the WE Organization: neither the WE Organization nor Marc or Craig Kielburger have ever been investigated by a law enforcement agency, currently or in the past. The WE Organization maintains that all financial transactions between its various entities, both charitable and for-profit, have followed all applicable laws. In his libel claim against Saturday Night Magazine: Craig Kielburger said that the article was false and led people to wrongly believe he was keeping the money for himself. According to a reported statement by a Free the Children accountant, donations made prior to the organization becoming a registered charity were deposited in a separate bank account, and the group was being run as a charity pending Revenue Canada's approval of its application. 2018 investigation: https://www.canadaland.com/all-of-wes-answers-to-canadaland-and-letters-from-their-lawyers/ 2019 investigation: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21044335-we-responses-to-canadaland-2019?responsive=1&title=1 Further reading: Canadaland's reporting on WE Charity: https://www.canadaland.com/?s=we+charity The WE Charity story, according to WE: https://www.we.org/en-CA/about-we/we-charity/our-story WE.org Transparency page: https://www.we.org/en-CA/transparency-reporting/we-charity WE.org Financials page: https://www.we.org/en-CA/about-we/we-charity/governance/ ME to WE Transparency page: https://www.we.org/en-CA/transparency-reporting/me-to-we Music by Audio Network This episode contains source materials used under the Fair Dealing provisions of the Copyright Act. Craig Kielburger became aware of the problem of child labor and the exploitation of children after reading a newspaper article about the death of a 12-year-old boy from Pakistan. At age four, Iqbal Masih was sold into slavery and shackled to a loom to make carpets. When he was ten, he escaped, and at twelve, he was murdered. Shocked by the differences in their lives, Craig researched the issue of child labor, then organized his friends and classmates in Ontario, Canada, to form the children's organization Free The Children. Today, there are more than 100 chapters around the world, working with governmental leaders to make the education and protection of children a priority and raising funds to create alternatives for children who are abused and exploited.

What does it mean to be a global citizen? 15-year-old filmmaker Kasha Slavner is traveling the world this Spring to document the answer to that question, by filming people who wake up every day with a desire to make the world we live in a better place, not only for themselves, but for their communities and all life that shares this planet. At 8 years old - after seeing Craig Kielburger, the founder of Free the Children, give a talk on the work of his organization - Kasha decided she was ready to start making a change in the world. Kasha became quite active very quickly - joining social justice clubs, raising funds for issues she was passionate about, and participating in campaigns for a variety of charities. In March, 2013 Kasha was selected as a youth delegate by the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace to attend the United Nations for the 57th annual session on the Commission of the Status of Women. Now, Kasha is taking a giant leap to make a difference by starting The Global Sunrise Project and convincing her mother, Marla, to let her take a semester out of school to travel the world using her love of photography, film and change-making to create a short documentary and book on global citizenship. The duo is seeking support and funding from others who believe in the project, through their Indiegogo Project for the documentary - "The Sunrise Storyteller©" -which will focus on stories of hope and resilience where people, despite what challenges they may face, are doing good things to make a difference in their own lives and in their communities - people who are "being the change they wish to see."She and her mom, Marla, will begin their 6-month trip this Spring. They will experience a completely different side of life from what they’re used to in their home of Toronto, Canada — the adventure will take them to corners of the globe where life isn’t always so easy, and they’ll be living out of one small bag with just a few changes of clothes.Kasha's mom, Marla, believes all of this experience is part of what she calls "educaring" for Kasha - which goes beyond just a traditional education.Join Julie Ann as she hosts both Kasha and Marla on ConsciousSHIFT, to explore the choices we each can make to positively impact change.
