What happens when compassion, science, and family come together to reshape the way we understand addiction? In this powerful episode, I talk with Dr. Carrie Wilkens co-founder of the Center for Motivation and Change (CMC) and co-author of Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change. We talk about the origins of CMC and how that created a blueprint that challenged the “tough love” approach so many families have been told is their only option. Together, we explore what has changed in addiction science over the past decade, what remains misunderstood, and how kindness continues to transform lives. You'll hear us dig into:• What's new in the 10th Anniversary Edition of Beyond Addiction—and how the science has evolved in the last decade.• Why relapse doesn't erase progress and how parents can reframe it in ways that bring more peace of mind.• The harmful oversimplification of “choice” in addiction and how to think about it in a more accurate and compassionate way.• How parents can move beyond the paralyzing fear of “enabling” and make decisions that truly serve their family. This is a conversation filled with wisdom, validation, and forward-looking hope for families who want a different path. Send us a text! (add your email to get a response) When does our help cross the line from supportive to harmful for our loved ones with mental health challenges? In this episode we dive deep into the complex dynamics of "unintentional reinforcement," a less judgmental term for "enabling" that acknowledges how our best intentions can sometimes backfire.Drawing from personal experiences with addiction, depression, and avoidance behaviors, we explore how our actions sometimes shield our loved ones from the very consequences that might motivate change. Whether it's financially supporting a partner who refuses to work, making excuses for someone's alcohol abuse, or accommodating anxiety-driven avoidance, these patterns can gradually trap both parties in cycles that feel impossible to break. What makes these situations particularly challenging is when we feel stuck between either "enabling" destructive behaviors or dealing with other consequences. When we point out the problem, they often retreat further into problematic behaviors. Through practical examples and psychological insights, we discuss strategies for shifting these dynamics without abandoning those we love.We highlight that boundaries aren't selfish- they're necessary. By intentionally encouraging healthy behaviors while allowing natural consequences for unhealthy ones, we can boost motivation for positive change. And by recognizing when our own needs for caretaking or control might be part of the problem, we gain the clarity to make difficult but loving choices.Ready to transform your relationship with someone struggling with mental health or addiction? In the more than four decades since Wisconsin’s first soy checkoff program launched, growers often wonder where, when, why and how checkoff resources are directed toward funding research, creating value-added uses and increasing market access. The Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board (WSMB) is inviting growers from across the state to get a closer look this summer by applying to participate in WSMB’s second statewide See For Yourself (SFY) mission Aug. 12-14. The tour’s first iteration was held in August 2024 in Wisconsin and Illinois, comprising WSMB and the Wisconsin Soybean Association (WSA) leaders. This year, WSMB is inviting grower participation from beyond the board. “We welcome the opportunity to be transparent and bring in our state’s soybean producers to join us and see for themselves how the soy checkoff is driving profitability and innovation at every turn,” WSMB Executive Director Adam Kask said. The board is offering spots to eight active Wisconsin soybean farmers. The delegation will also include WSMB farmer leaders, staff and University of Wisconsin researchers, including Dr. Shawn Conley. Expenses, which include two nights lodging, meals and transportation, will be provided by WSMB. Checkoff check in The tour will begin Tuesday morning, Aug. 12 at the Arlington Research Station, where Conley and colleagues Damon Smith and Rodrigo Werle will showcase the latest advancements in checkoff research. “We work with farmers a lot,” said Conley, a WSA director. “They want to know what their checkoff dollars are being used for, so my biggest goal is showing the work and significant amount of research dollars that farmers are supporting, and how we take very seriously the opportunity given to use these monies in a good way.” Conley said he’s also excited to demonstrate the latest technologies in drone and sprayer technologies. “There’s a lot of tools we’re developing in AI that we want to show growers,” he said. “Farmers like to see the cool things we’re doing with our technologies.” The delegation will then head to an area cranberry facility before visiting Chippewa Valley Technical College for an outdoor demonstration of SoyFoam, a soy-based firefighting foam created by Wisconsin native Dave Garlie’s Cross Plains Solutions. “SoyFoam is a project our board continues to be passionate about as a value-added use that protects our first responders, and we’re seeing that momentum behind a soy-based firefighting foam spreading across the country right now,” WSMB President Jonathan Gibbs said. On Aug. 13, growers will tour Alsum Farms & Produce and later visit Crave Brothers Creamery to learn more about how dairy cows, the state’s largest consumer of soymeal, add demand to Wisconsin soybeans. Day 2 is capped by another WSMB checkoff investment, the DeLong Co.’s Agricultural Maritime Export Facility at Port Milwaukee. The terminal is estimated to increase exports through Port Milwaukee by as much as 400,000 metric tons per year. Kask, who’s toured the facility multiple times, said WSMB continues to search for new international markets for the state’s soybean farmers, who export around 60% of their commodity. “Diversifying our markets, promoting new uses and sponsoring some of the nation’s most advanced soybean research – those are all core priorities our farmers are depending on to improve their bottom line,” he said. The SFY tour will conclude Aug. 14 with a return visit to the Arlington Research Station for a plot tour. Click here to review the tentative agenda. Interested SFY applicants can click here to apply for the SFY mission by July 22. Farmer applicants approved by WSMB will be July 25. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Why Judge Wilkens Did Not Approve the House Settlement on April 7, 2025

In this episode, I break down three key reasons why Judge Wilkens declined to confirm the House v NCAA settlement during the April 7 hearing: 1) Future Athlete Impact- Judge Wilkens expressed concern that the settlement could unfairly affect future student-athletes who weren't part of the case and had no opportunity to object, potentially settling a troubling legal precedent. She asked the attorney to provide legal precedent to justify the 10 year Injunction which will impact future student athletes.  2) Roster Limits - She challenged the immediate implementation of roster size limits, suggesting that current student-athletes should be "grandfathered in" to protect their roster spots or that limits should be phased in over time.  3) $600 Dollar Review on Third party NIL Deals - Judge Wilkens questioned the logic behind questioning deals over $600. She pressed the attorneys to explain how the $600 limit would benefit student-athletes.  Go to my home page to jillmcbridebaxter.com to set up a meeting.  https://linktr.ee/jillmcbridebaxter  Get on my email list or sign up for one of my free classes.

Wisconsin will look prettier today, but winds will still be gusty. Stu Muck paints a picture of weekend weather. A relatively new group has published an important piece of guidance for policy in Wisconsin. Bob Welch, executive director of the new Rural Policy Institute, highlights what the groups goal is, and also explains a new report they've released. "The Rural/Urban Balance in Wisconsin" is a detailed, scientific research paper that breaks out geography and demographics of the state. Late one evening in the summer of 1922, Henry Wilkens burst through the doors of the emergency room covered in his wife's blood. But was he a grieving husband or a ruthless killer who conspired with bandits to have her murdered? To find out, the San Francisco police turned to technology and a new machine that had just been invented in Berkeley by a rookie detective, a visionary police chief, and a teenage magician with a showman's touch. John Larson, Gus Vollmer, and Leonarde Keeler hoped the lie detector would make the justice system fairer, but the flawed device soon grew too powerful for them to control. It poisoned their lives, turned fast friends into bitter enemies, and, as it conquered America and the world, transformed our relationship with the truth in ways that are still being felt. My guest today is Amit Katwala, writer and editor for Wired in London. His book is called "Tremors in the Blood: Murder, Obsession, and the Birth of the Lie Detector." Judge Wilkens did not Approve the Settlement in the House vs. NCAA case. In a nutshell U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilkens said "Taking things Away from People is not A Good Idea" She didn't like the restrictions the parties placed on 3rd party collectives, the cap of 20 million dollars, or the fact this settlement would apply to a person who is 6 years old and didn't have representation in the settlement. The parties have 3 weeks to come up with a more fair and consistent settlement.  Are You Ready to Have Jill Help You Reach Your Coaching Career Goals! If your ready to invest in yourself!
