In the last (for a little while, at least) of our one-artist focused podcasts, the boys take a deep dive into bassist/composer/bandleader Ben Allison's latest four releases. Ben's an exact contemporary of our intrepid podcasters, if a bit better looking and more talented, and they followed his career from early days until a few years back when they stopped picked up releases for a hot minute. Anyway, here's all the news on two projects by Ben's new trio as well as two quartet projects with slightly different line-ups. In pop-matters, Pat discusses some recent pick-ups from the seventies while Mike has made it all the way into the eighties. Ben Allison – LAYERS OF THE CITY, TELL THE BIRDS I SAID HELLO, HEALING POWER: THE MUSIC OF CARLA BLEY, MOMENTS INSIDE.
They say that three is the perfect number, and so we have decided to go "three-by-three", focusing on three musicians, Nicole McCabe [pictured], Herbie Nichols and John Hadfield, and featuring three recent tracks associated with each one of them. The playlist also features Dolphin Hyperspace, Louis Cole, Logan Kane; Ben Allison, Steve Cardenas, Ted Nash; Fay Victor; Enrique Heredia; Layale Chaker, Sarafand; and Rachel Eckroth. Detailed playlist at https://spinitron.com/RFB/pl/19033914/Mondo-Jazz (up to "Improvisation 1"). Happy listening!
Featuring a brand new jam from NYC songwriting legend Jesse Harris; the beautiful world of Italian composer Olivia Belli; Colorado meets Switzerland in the minds of Hawkfather and Kwest; the genius of Charlie Mingus; a long-running NYC trio of legends—Ben Allison, Steve Cardenas, and Ted Nash; a creative staple of NOLA aka the New Orleans Klezmer All Stars; British new music legends Azimuth; and the crushing groove of Mr. Shuggie Otis.

Back when I was in college, I studied with a great jazz guitarist in New York City named Steve Cardenas.Steve is a fantastic jazz musician, tours around the world with lots of different artists, and has recorded albums. In all senses of the word, a very accomplished musician and seasoned jazz player. In one of our lessons, one time, when I went up to his house in Brooklyn, he told me something that was slightly disturbing, at least to the way I was thinking about learning music and jazz at that time. And that was, he told me that he had never transcribed a jazz solo before. And this shook me because many of us understand that conventional advice for learning jazz is to learn jazz solos by ear, transcribe jazz solos and he didn't do that, and that kind of threw me in a whirlwind and kind of turned my world around. So, today, I'm going to talk about 5 reasons why you actually might not want to be transcribing jazz solos to learn how to play jazz and improve your solos. In this episode:1. What is transcribing in the jazz context2. Transcribing solos is time-consuming3. Transcribing solos is frustrating4. Transcribing solos doesn't always translate to better solos5. Transcribing solos won't help you develop your own voice6. Transcribing solos may not fit your learning style Important Links:Free Guide to learning standards by ear: Learn Jazz Standards the Smart WayLJS Inner Circle MembershipListen to the Learn Jazz Standards PodcastLIMITED TIME OFFER - Start your 7-day trial of the Inner Circle for only $7 (March Only): https://members.learnjazzstandards.com/sp/inner-circle-sales-page-podcast-direct/

Twelve months have gone by so fast, and so much has happened... At the beginning of the year we were still under various degrees of lockdown or social distancing, now we have a war, weather patterns and a financial situation that are crazier than ever, etc. One positive thread through these months, however, has been the relentless pace at which creative musicians have brought us album after album of gorgeous music, which confirmed once more that musicians may be the last social group that can still be trusted! The Movie we are discussing in this episode is, "Mighty Morphing Power Rangers The Movie" , with special Guests STEVEN GARCIA AND VICTOR OCASIO Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie is a 1995 American superhero film. It stars the ensemble cast of Karan Ashley, Johnny Yong Bosch, Steve Cardenas, Jason David Frank, Amy Jo Johnson, and David Yost alongside the villains cast from the original series and Paul Freeman as Ivan Ooze. Much like the television season that followed the release, it used concepts from the Japanese Super Sentai series Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, Gosei Sentai Dairanger and Ninja Sentai Kakuranger. It is the first Power Rangersproduction from Saban Entertainment not to feature any archived footage from Super Sentai. It is the first installment in Power Rangers film series. The film was released in between the second and third seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but is incompatible with season three, which provides a different explanation for the Rangers gaining their Ninja Ranger powers and Ninjazords, indicating they are set in different continuities.
