TIP: Top Academics punches your ticket to the dance. Impact Leadership gets you admitted. TALE: When you take a look at the March Madness brackets for the NCAA Men's and Women's tournament, you learn that they ALL have winning records. These are the AQs: Academic Qualities. They are the best in their athletic conference, be it Pac 12, Big 10, Atlantic 10, Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big East, etc. Their stats and overall winning records earned them a ticket to the “dance.” Was it a fluke that #13 seed Yale Men's team beat #4 seed Auburn? Or that #14 seed Oakland Men's team beat #3 seed Kentucky (with 8 National titles)? How about my Lady Trojans headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 30 years and will face the Baylor Bears who have 3 national titles under their belt? NO. These are the best teams around the country, and each comes with the “goods” of what it takes to win. So what is the difference? How a team shows leadership, endurance, and teamwork throughout the game is critical. Their preparation, work ethic, dedication, commitment, and longevity are paramount. The intangibles such as, passion, grit, belief, and how a team succeeds under pressure and adversity, are without a doubt instrumental to winning any game. These are the PQs, Personal Qualities of a team. For this issue of “Knowledge Counts”, we are speaking with three CIQS members who share the path they took to join CIQS and earn their designations. • Host: Wendy Hobbs, PQS(F) • Producer: Ryan Schriml • Guests: Mykola Pulnyev, Kelly Parker, Michael Gabert About Our Guests: Mykola Pulnyev, PQS, MRICS, PMP, GSC was born in Ukraine, where he lived until he moved to Toronto with his family in 2002 in pursuit of new opportunities. He started off working in construction with a Ukrainian plumber while taking English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at night. In 2004, he was accepted into the Construction Engineering Technology program at George Brown, where he took a construction cost estimation class. His instructor inspired him to join CIQS as a student member and he earned his PQS in 2014. “I have always wanted to be associated with landmarks that will remain on the Canadian landscape for generations.” At the time of this interview, he was the preconstruction manager at EllisDon in Ottawa. Currently, he is the commercial director for EllisDon in Chicoutimi, QC. Kelly Parker, PQS has over 25 years of experience working as a contractor's mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) quantity surveyor in the UK before relocating to Canada and joining Tech-Cost in 2015 as an M&E cost consultant. As a “poacher turned gamekeeper”, she understands how services are installed on-site, which is key when preparing estimates and reviewing change. Growing up, she saw herself as working in a bank or possibly being a brick layer. When her father told her that quantity surveying was a good profession, she “decided to count the bricks instead of laying them.” She volunteers as a CIQS Ambassador and sits on the CIQS education committee, and she is excited about promoting the Institute and quantity surveying as a strong career choice. “As quantity surveyors, the world is our oyster and we are limited only by our own beliefs.” Michael Gabert, PQS(F), MRICS, GSC is the director for BTY's Prairie's region, specializing in Lender's Technical Advisory, Independent Certification, Payment Certification and Cost Management services for public authorities, owners, developers, architects and financial institutions. You go to work every day knowing that you will learn something new.”

During this episode of Knowledge Counts, Wendy and her guest, Michael Gabert will discuss the role of a Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) on P3 projects. Although P3 projects have been used globally for decades, it is only in the last 10 years or so that P3 projects have become common-place in Canada. A P3 project is different from a traditional procurement process as it integrates every aspect of the project into one contract for public infrastructure project such as roads, bridges, hospitals, event stadiums, highways, schools and bridges. These projects could require that the architect, builder, lender and operations team all work together throughout the life cycle of the project. Michael Gabert, Director, Cost Management Services at BTY talks about the various roles a PQS can have on these projects throughout its life cycle. • Host: Wendy Hobbs, PQS(F) • Producer: Ryan Schriml • Guests: Michael Gabert, PQS(F) About Our Guest: Michael is the Director for BTY's Prairies region specializing in Lender's Technical Advisory, Independent Certification, Payment Certification and Cost Management services for Public Authorities, Owners, Developers, Architects and Financial Institutions. There are over 30K high schools, which means there are 30+ valedictorians, class presidents, team captains, etc. While the average acceptance rate to colleges across the country is over 60%, if your child has a "dream college" on their mind, you won't want to miss this episode. How will s/he stand out among a pool of thousands? Be Present. Be Open. Be Uncomfortable. Today, our guest, Ross Mankuta, offers his tips, tales, and lessons on how teaching your child to be present, be open-minded, and be willing to explore and be uncomfortable is the best preparation for the college admission process. And if YOU, as the Parent, can find a way to teach your child to do all of that, well, my friends, you are raising a courageous doer and college-bound teen! As the Director of College Counseling, Ross discusses Early Action, Early Decision, and the reality of applying to highly competitive institutions. Ross also offers surprising tales of two of his most memorable students and applicants, and explains what made each one so compelling in the admission process. Ross truly puts the Community in his school, Milken Community School. HIGHLIGHTS from this episode: IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE, JUMP TO MINUTE 30 AND LISTEN FOR 15 MINUTES. I asked Ross to share a tale about a student that stands out from his entire career. Ross gives a detail description about two students who stood out in the application with their PQs. They found their "coolness" factor and leverage that in the application process. One is a C/B average student in school, but wins a top award while in the middle of application season. The other becomes known in the admission office as "Train Boy" because of application to USC's Policy, Planning, and Development School. Both applicants use their passions to guide their journey to college. They didn't do what they thought they "should" do, but rather, what they wanted to do. You are in for a treat. Take the 15 minutes!! I promise you, it will be worth it. Bio: Originally from Long Island, NY, Ross D. Mankuta earned his Bachelors and Master's degrees from the George Washington University (GW). After spending time working in politics in both the House of Representatives and The White House, Ross made the transition to the world of higher education by working in the Undergraduate Admission Office at GW. After two years at GW and two more at the University of Southern California (USC), Ross came to Milken Community Schools to join its College Counseling & Academic Planning office. During his time at Milken Ross also served as an assistant coach to the baseball team as well as worked to assist the admission office by conducting interviews and sitting on the admission committee. In 2018 Ross was on the steering committee for Milken's CAIS/WASC accreditation process. This past summer, Ross took on added responsibility and was named Milken's Director of College Counseling, Alumni Relations, & Strategic Partnerships. ORIGINAL AIRDATE AND TITLE: December 18, 2019, Be Present. Be Open. Be Uncomfortable.

For Quackcast 265 I wanted to steer the direction toward the idea of future fixes and features for Drunk Duck! We talked a bit about the 2nd wave of fixes that will be happening now- HippieVan worked to gather people's suggestions for the most important bugs that needed fixing (with our limited funds), and features people want added, and then did a survey to find what people though were the highest priority. It was a lot of work and took a few weeks to come up with the results. Bellow is a summery of what she learned:Top results in bug fixes:- Numerous issues with pre-uploaded comics – 61%, 14.5 points- When browsing the “comics” tab, the first page of comics is listed by rank, after which it switches to alphabetical. – 32%, 6.5 points- Multiple page/bulk uploader sometimes ends up with pages out of order. – 25%, 4.5 pointsTop results in new features:- A reply feature for comic comments. – 21%, 5.5 points- Improve the comic search function – 21%, 4.5 points- Add the option to choose the exact time/hour when pre-uploading comic pages. – 21%, 4 points- Active/On Hiatus/Complete tags for comics – 18%, 4.5 points- More options/more customization for page layout – 21%, 3.5 points“Specific results aside, it looks to me like the main issues people are concerned with generally are: pre-uploaded comics, dealing with comments, and browsing via the ”comics“ tab. Issues concerning the front page were surprisingly not in any of the top results - I suspect partly because most of the survey-takers are heavy users who don't rely on the front page as much as newer/more casual users.”Though in all we had about 17 bugs on the list that people wanted fixing. I put all the priority ones at the top of the list but also kept the rest on there because I'd prefer bugs are fixed no matter what. Unfortunately when I gave that list to Alexey, our programmer he said that just fixing all the bugs would eat up most of the budget with very little left over for features (which are a lot more complicated to work on). I might ask him to drop some of the bugs in favour of a couple of the features though because that's really what people would prefer to see added to the site: something new, visible, a tangible benefit. On that subject though we would REALLY love to get into planning for the future features for DD! The sorts of things we're talking about for THAT are BIG changes: like changing the front page to modernise it; choosing a better colour scheme; having a really useful notification area for DD members that have all your info, notifications, favourites, PQs, comic comments and reply comments all in one single place so you can manage all that easily and naturally in one go-for ALL of that we need our DD community to decide what the want out of that stuff and to help design it, not have the designs just forced on them as in the past.Above all we want to capitalise on the two things that make DD stand out above the pack: Our focus on community, and our oddball reputation as a site that welcomes and promotes the diverse and the weird, we are truly DRUNK DUCK, not really some corporate, slick “The Duck Webcomics”. We don't all think in the same way as they seem to on some comic sites, our artists don't work in the same styles; there's a slightly grungy, irreverent, off-centeredness that has always characterised the essence of DD and we'd like to reflect that in any redesign. You can also still donate to our Indiegogo to help us with these future developments!Gunwallace gave us a lovely track for the comic Wounds!Topics and shownotesFeatured comic:Undead 20XX - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Undead_20XX/Donate to our Indiegogo - http://igg.me/at/DrunkDuckSpecial thanks to:Gunwallace - http://www.virtuallycomics.comBanes - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/Banes/Kawaiidaigakusei - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/kawaiidaigakusei/Pitface - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/PIT_FACE/Featured music:Wounds http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Wounds/, by caleb131, rated M.- See more at: http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/news/2016/apr/04/quackcast-265-drunk-duck-updates-and-the-future/

This is a theme for the number 6. That number that a certain user, plymayer, gives to comics all when he feels they deserve it. A 6. A 6 out of 5. This is a theme for a concept. The concept of a supportive DD'er. To plymayer … and to every 6 he has handed out. (Okay, so it's also a theme for X Up … but don't tell anyone).
