One August afternoon in 1896, the editor of the Emmons County Record greeted a well-known visitor to his Linton office. The editor called him by one of his many nicknames, “Colonel Ben Corbin, the Wolf-Worryer from Wayback.” Colonel Corbin bore gifts — a “nice mess of catfish,” which he taught his host how to skin for the table.

In 2001 a large group of refugee teenagers is rescued from the horrendous war between Sudan and the freedom seeking South Sudan. Many of them now orphaned, had started life as six year old child soldiers who had normalized burying their age mates - dead from starvation, disease and sometimes combat. Peter was keen as a young man to see a free Sudan, but besides knowing how to shoot a gun and communist political ideology indoctrination he possesses little else. The rescue brings the children to the United States where they each begin new lives. Peter Biar Ajak’s remarkable journey of transformation is enthralling. This is a public episode. Bears and Beers preview a Week 15 playoff game vs the Vikings. Both teams are 6-7, one game out of the playoffs, but started the season drastically different. Da Bears were 5-1 and the Vikes were 1-5. Who will prevail today and get to .500? Bears face a tough task with a depleted secondary up against Thielen and Jefferson, along with the NFL's #2 rusher in Dalvin Cook. Da Bears look to continue an offensive resurgence with our revamped Oline making its 4th start together. Will Montgomery get more than 11 carries? Will the offense be tailored to fit Mitch's strengths? We feature Tighthead Brewery and their Longsnapper IPA, made in collaboration with the longest tenured Chicago Bear, Patrick Mannelly. Is CZ a fan of this 6% West Coast IPA? Either way, we love Mannelly and the cool tall boy can! Flipka prefers the 9.7% Old Kaya Dog Barleywine, paired with an Augie's Italian Beef/Sausage Combo! One of the best stories of the year, where Flipka explains how he learned to sneak into old Soldier Field and play 3 on 3 football games! 70 Years after a Chinese soldier stuck him in the gut with a bayonet, a soldier receives his purple heart. The life threatening injury happened when the soldier was but 16-years-old. He was too young to even be in that fox hole, in that battle, but there he was, fighting for his life. What happened? Why didn't he get recognized in 1950 when he was wounded? This is the story of the old soldier getting his purple heart. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/andy-cordan/support

In this session we survey the last letter of the Apostle Paul. As Paul writes his second letter to Timothy he knows his days are numbered. Paul uses illustrations of a soldier, athlete and a farmer to emphasize the disciplined, difficult and patient work of living out the Gospel as disciples of Jesus Christ. There are rules for the life in Christ, and one of them is you must pick up your cross and be willing to follow and suffer for Him.
Thank you for listening to this completely re recorded and re mastered reading of George Washington’s Visions for America. Analysis of this document will be performed in an upcoming show. Source: Originally shared to me by Rik E Shay of the Xirtus Tartary and The Watchmen Discord Servers. Sharing now with my gratitude. I guess we can call it a Prophecy- attributed to none other than the Foundingest of Fathers, known by everyone starting just now as The Neverliar, The Spirit of Virginia, the Mahogany Masticator, and The Delaware River Decamper! Indeed, our subject today is none other than the heavyweight champion of US Presidents, Mister George-No-Middle-Name-Washington himself. The vision that I am speaking of is one that came to Washington during the historic winter of 1777 while in “Winter Quarters” at Valley Forge with his army of Revolutionary soldiers. This was the same winter in which thousands of American volunteers, underpaid and underfed even at that early stage of the conflict- perished of cold and disease while trying to endure one of the worst winters on record since the peak of the Little Ice Age of the 16th and 17th Centuries. Now, I must hasten to qualify the assertion that the visions were one hundred percent for sure that of the then General of the Continental Army.- this vision is attributed to George Washington, but was not heard of before the time of it’s disclosure in 1859 by a then 99 year old Random Old Soldier named Anthony Sherman. Sherman was supposedly there in ‘77 for that bitter winter, one in which it was recounted many times that Washington would “Go to the thicket to pray”. The Old Soldier would recount his story before he perished, that the listener may record Washington’s Vision, which included a sweeping picture of the young nation’s future, marked by three terrible perils. Episode 42: So Long Old Soldier bids farewell to General MacArthur in a podcast experience which has to be heard to be believed! Before we get to the point that MacArthur stood before Congress and gave that rousing farewell speech on 19th April 1951 though, we have to detail how it was that the relationship between President and General deteriorated to such a point that both parted ways. It was not, predictably enough, MacArthur’s choice. Yet, for a myriad of reasons, including MacArthur’s inability to stop flapping his gums, Truman decided in early April to pull the plug on the grizzled General’s career.Truman’s decision is still debated to this day. It seems at its core was the problems that MacArthur presented to American foreign policy. It seemed, in spring 1951, that there were two American foreign policies – one presented by the Truman administration in Washington, the other communicated by MacArthur’s staff in Tokyo. In a world where America’s allies were anxious that the war not be escalated, it was only natural that the President would seek to limit his General’s pronouncements, lest they cause a chain reaction and ruin the original plan. Fortunately for Truman, the end of MacArthur’s career was not an out of the blue event, but an incident which contained several stages that had been prepared in time. It was in many ways the perfect conclusion to a plan set in motion months beforehand, but that didn’t mean the General was going down without a significant PR fight. Let’s see how it all looked, as I take you to one of the most contentious, and vibrant periods of the Korean War!*********Music used:“I’ll Say She Does” by Al Jolson, released in 1919.

From Dave DeBaeremaeker.. Heya folks Just to address Doctor D's assertion that speed limits are slow in the US based on that Top Gear (UK) episode. It is not the case. That road they were on: the Blue Ridge Parkway is indeed maxed at 45MPH. However it is important to note that the Blue Ridge is a narrow windy mountain road, and in a normal reasonably priced car, 45 feels speedy. Fun fact: that road is a National Park, and runs for hundreds of miles thru many states. It is also one of my favourite roads to drive on (which I do a lot as it runs relatively close to my house). The speed limit on the road I take up the mountains to the Parkway is 55MPH. There are plenty of Interstates that do 70MPH on the east coast. In New Mexico I40 is 75MPH, and some roads in the flat states in the middle of the country do not have speed limits. Cheers Dave Nemesis Geocaches.. From Ey Up Me Duck.. Nemesis caches: we only call it a nemesis cache if we have looked for it at least twice & I have just scanned my DNF list and the only ones we have searched for numerous times (including twice with a bunch of Scouts!) are Look out for the Foxes (GC3DF9X) and Devilishly Difficult (GC3FVZW) - both near Colwick Woods. We haven't been to look for a while so think it is about time we went for another look to see if anything looks different. Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do.. Scott Berks. Hi Oh Beep, I see you have been getting on with working out 2 puzzle caches - have you managed to go out and find them yet? February Challenge. As Feb is the month of love and as some people declare their love for each in church, your challenge for this month is to find 5 Church Micros. On Sunday, although we didn't set out to do it, me and The Old Soldier collected 15 Church Micros. I know this is nothing compared to some people who go out and get up to a hundred in a day but it was good for us, especially as we hadn't intended it. Now this should be quite an easy task for Dr D to achieve (unless you have already done them) as there are lots in Beeston area!!!! If others want to try the challenge too and don't have church micros in their area, they can find ones with 'church' in the title. Good Luck Searching Denise aka Ey Up Me Duck GeoFleaz Competition.. Feedback.. From Dave Debaeremaeker.. Heya Mark & Sam I am 2/3rds of the way thru episode 56, but had to pause when I pulled into the parking lot at work. I'll catch the rest on the commute home, but for now I have some comments. First of all, the Americans do have an annoying way of formatting their dates. Month-Day-Year. In Canada (and I believe in the UK aswell) they do Day-Month-Year. I can never keep the dates format straight between the two, so I typically go in the proper sort order:Year-month-day, or just spell it out : January 12, 2015. Second, re: the comment from the fellow who did 800 miles and 4 events in a single day. I don't think you fully appreciate the joy that is a good long road trip. Britain is simply not large enough to get the experience of many many hours spent on the open highway, with the tunes cranked, the engine rev'd, and watching the world pass by your car windows. Driving can be dang annoying when there is a lot of traffic but there are many places in the US where you can drive for hours on our interstate highways and barely see another car. Those are the roads that many a car-based rock anthem has been written about. As for the date of 12-13-14 (Yankee formatting), I also had an adventure that day. I have a group of geocaching friends - we call ourselves Team Awesomesauce - that goes on big adventures together. On the date in question two of our group (FailedApparatus and HoosierSunshine - pronounced: Who's-yer-sunshine) were hosting a geocaching trivia event that evening in Columbia South Carolina.Columbia is about 3 hours from my house, so I left early on that morning, met up with the group in Charlotte North Carolina, and together we cached ourselves to Columbia. Along the way we did some amazing caches. I blogged about the adventure here:http://debaere.blogspot.com/2014/12/team-awesomesauce-rides-again.html I also have a shot of a clock taken at 12-13-14 15:16;17 (3:16 PM) to mark the occaision:http://debaere.blogspot.com/2014/12/12-13-14-151617.html Speaking of interesting dates, Pi day is coming up. March 14th.i.e. in Yankee formatting 3-14. This year is special as 3-14-159:26:53 is pi correct to the first 8 decimal places. There are many folks in the US that are planning events around Pi day (yay for math geeks!) Finally the translation of Doctor D's Australian accent was comedic gold. Well done. Cheers From Ey Up Me Duck Before the New Year me and The Old Soldier sat and discussed (I said what I'd like to do and he listened & agreed!!!) our geocaching aims for the year and came up with the following list. 1- to listen to the Oh Beep show the week after it is aired. I am currently very bad and tend to listen to them in batches, although I have nearly caught up & only have about 10 older episodes to listen to now (the May & June ones) 2 - to find (and log Dr D!!!) 3000 caches this year. This is to go towards a challenge set by Nadiagoescaching during the year. 3 - To try and clear a 10km radius from house 4 - To clear at least another 60 days from our date found calendar (currently at 242/366 days). 5 - To complete and find at least 10 Challenge caches - I think we managed to grab 3 or 4 of these at the weekend!!! 6- To complete DT grid (12 to go) 7 - To cache in at least 10 more English counties (currently 31/46 counties) 8 - Find some Little Quest Caches (currently 1/48) – to get us into double figures at least 9 - To find 20 more caches to help go towards completing the Jasmer Challenge (caches placed – months since geocaching began) - (140/176) 10 - Find any caches in area with favourite points of over 25 From Misha.. I am GC member Misha, Looky what I found while I was listening to your latest Podcast near Truro, NS, Canada. It began as a nice sunny minus 24°C and the sun warmed us to -12°C a great 40 cache hike, I was at #34 Hidez 57. Union Jack GC5EA21 Thanks for podcasting Nemesis Geocaches.. Defined (to end Doctor D's refusal to accept those proposed). A cache must be searched for and not found on at least 3 separate occasions to be classed as a Nemesis Geocache by Doctor D. Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do.. From StaticJay.. Just had two disabled caches of mine found which is weird because the containers are sitting in my workshop. People play their own way, but Geocaching isn't hard. Smartphones make it easier than ever. GO OUTSIDE, YOU MIGHT ENJOY IT! Ask Doctor D.. Doctor D, I enjoy listening to your podcast very much but feel that your offensiving is lacking when it comes to those with disabilities and I wanted to give you a chance to put this situation right. I am blind but still manage to Geocache with my family but reckon the mighty Doctor D must have some advice that might help me be a better cacher, after all you do know everything… and you are a doctor, so please, What advice do you have for blind geocachers? Cheers Paul aka washknight http://washknight.wordpress.com GGH Tips.. The secrets of NiMH (batteries) - GGH 116: Batteries III The Ey Up Me Duck Challenges.. I have also decided to set the Oh Beep team a Monthly Challenge and see how many (of the 12) you achieve by the end of the year!!! I have taken into consideration that you don't like caching much when it is too cold (or too hot) so you have more time to spend at home, sat in front of your laptop or with a pen and paper. Also because January has already started I will give you until the end of February to complete this challenge (but you'll still get one in the first week of Feb too!!!). So my first challenge to you is to work out (solve) and find 2 puzzle caches. I am giving you about 6 weeks to complete this which I don't think is too difficult. Me and Ady went out on Sunday and managed to find 20 puzzles, so 2 in 6 weeks is very doable (is that a word!). Annoyingly when we got in late that evening, a challenge cache had just been published by TeamTriplet asking for 25 puzzle caches to be found in a day!!! - we were gutted BUT far too cold to go out again! If you want to know of some of the easier ones out there let me know and I will tell you which ones to look at! That's all from me for now. I'll be listening every week now to see how you are getting on with my challenge
This week on The Oh Beep! Geocaching Podcast we're interviewing GeoPaulVlogger. Because of Geocaching... None this week Feedback... The Old Soldier came through with his Geocaching police story... 24 Hour Event Police Saga Well as most people have heard various bits of the tale it may be best to let you all know what happened and hopefully save others from the fun and games. We had entered into the first 24 Hour Caching Event set up through GEM by Jacaru. It all started off so well with a quick nap and then off to Lincoln picking up some caches along the A46 before doing a couple of cycle routes we had planned which pulled in quite a few caches and worked up an appetite so we headed into Lincoln looking for somewhere to eat and still picking up Caches as we went. We found a “Clown” that would do us some fast food so after filling energy levels up we thought we would grab some caches showing close by before heading back to Event HQ. The few caches we had spotted were around an industrial estate so we thought they would be easy cache and dashes before the drive back. It started out OK with a couple of quick finds but then at another cache we spotted a car drive slowly passed with two men in it. We quickly re-hid the cache and headed back to the car, noticing the car that passed us was parked up at an industrial unit further down the road. Thinking nothing of it we headed around to another cache, Denise waited in the car while I nipped into the bushes (To get a cache!!). While signing the log the same car appeared again this time parking a short distance behind our car. This left me with the dilemma of what to do next, Denise was safe in the car with the doors locked but I was stuck in the bushes with two strangers sat in a car with the engine and lights off. I gave it a few minutes to see if they would move on but no joy so with time pushing on I decided to just head back to the car and head back to Event HQ. The two guys did nothing until we had taken the first turn when I noticed they had been following but with the lights off!! Now starting to feel very uneasy we realised we either had some sort of security/police on our tail or someone that was hoping for a better place to rob/attack us. Seeing as the best place to do the latter was behind us we realised we had police following us for some reason, the chance to test this arose at a set of traffic lights as we headed for the A46 which I slowed for and then went through on yellow and the two guys tailing us followed us about 5 cars back but decided to run a red by going around other cars! We definitely had police following us. As we got onto the A46 and went around an Island I noticed the unmarked car had been joined by two marked vehicles and as we got onto the dual carriageway the road behind lit up in a sea of blue lights and sirens as we had a marked car shoot in front of us joined by one to the side and the unmarked behind us also showing off his pretty lights. Rather than blocking the A46 I pointed at a sign near us saying parking 1/4mile and motioned for the police to move down to it with us. Once in the Parking area we proceeded to have a chat with half of Lincolnshire’s police force and found out we the suspects of metal theft in the area. Something I found funny as we had the bikes on the back so loading up would have been a slow job! When the marked cars were happy with our status and stories they were happy to let us carry on our way, not before they mentioned one of the guys in the unmarked was a cacher so should have known better. Having a chat with him got to the bottom of the problem as he said he had the app on his phone and that area didn’t have any caches, he was a bit shocked when I showed him the GPSr with all the caches in Lincoln as it turned out he was a not a premium member thinking the official phone app showed him everything and knew nothing of Premium membership. At least he was now more aware of all the caches he could get and may leave some other cacher’s alone. As can be expected we were late back to Event HQ and being fairly new to GEM we did not have any contact numbers so arrived to a multitude of questions from those that had waited for our return. Thankfully it has not put us off at all but we do avoid some places after dark and thankfully have learned about Phone A Friend lists, something that would have been very helpful on that fun evening. This year’s event we will be more prepared with contact numbers to hand and a caching route that keeps us well away from Lincoln!! Ask Doctor D... This CITO event takes place on the Sussex Coast, near Seaford, on the morning of 26th April, 9.30 to 12.30 and coincides with the International CITO Day, gaining both an icon and souvenir. Historically the event has attracted a good number of cachers to help clear the litter from this picturesque area and have a good morning among friends, old and new; this year should be no different. This year Cubs, Scouts, Leaders and families from the 4th Lewes Scout Group will be attending, helping with the litter-pick and providing Tea, Coffee and some cakes to reward all of the participants for their hard work. We grow through interaction with others and daring to explore new experiences and places. Making Treasure happen will be a story unto itself and you can be a part of it! We’re planning a crowdfunding campaign next spring so that we can get our audience involved in getting the movie made. We’re already pretty lucky to have access to really nice professional cameras and equipment but it’s nice to be able to feed the cast and crew, get permits, and create the perfect setting for every shot in the film too! Yorkshire Yellow "Because of geocaching - I've been to some really great places I wouldn't have been to otherwise." Feedback... From Denise aka Ey Up Me Duck... Hi Mark, Sam and Sophie, I have finally got around to listening to your podcasts (although I have just noticed there is one more (the latest) for me to listen to). I have really enjoyed them. It felt just like I was sat in the room with you. I can't remember all the questions you have raised but here are our answers to the ones I can remember. GPS vs Phone - I'm with Sophie on this one as we tend to go out for the whole day and the battery on the phone runs out. We don't mind the phone for cache and dashes and also if there is a new one in the area and we can't be bothered to mess about putting it on the GPS but generally we prefer the GPS and if are in another country then we don't have roaming charges - though this nearly backfired on us last year when we went to Cyprus because although we knew we had loaded 500 plus caches onto the GPS when we powered it up in our villa it only showed 10!!!! We were devastated. Luckily Philip (brother) was due out two days later so he brought the laptop out and saved the day! Caching and holidays - we now tend to plan holidays in places where we can cache too. New Year Caching Resolutions: well last year we had found just over 200 caches and I said to the Old Soldier that I'd like to get to 500 by the end of the year ... we are now almost at the 2000 mark!!!! So this year our aim is get 2000 caches, get over 100 on a day, cache in at least one more country and cache in at least 5 more counties and complete 2 challenge caches. Urban Vs Rural - we enjoy both. If we have a lot of time (or if we are with the Scouts and want to wear them out so they sleep at night) we tend to do countryside walks. But sometimes we only have a few hours spare and so then we do ones we can park near. It also depends on the weather. It is not nice caching in the pouring rain so wouldn't plan to do a walk but might do a few round town. We also prefer trails where we can cycle around due to the Old Soldiers injuries. Most important piece of equipment (apart from GPS and resources). The Old Soldier says tweezers and I say my extending torch / magnet thing. I think that I have mentioned most of the shows you have done - keep up the good work. News & Events...
