David Eubank returns to the Break It Down Show with Pete A Turner. David is a former Green Beret who's post service work focuses on providing aid in conflict zones. He and his Free Burma Rangers have focused on war relief in Syria, Burma, Ukraine...basically, anywhere where there is a need, FBR goes to help. The bulk of David's mission is conducted in Burma. But, FBR ran to Afghanistan when it fell, and they'll continue to venture out where help is needed. Even if the war isn't frontline news, FBR is working to reduce harm and render aid.

Episode #271: During the anti-military protests of 1988, the man known as Monkey was just an observer. A friend asked him, “Are you a man? If you are a man, why do you just sit and look?”However, over the next 9 years, Monkey had the misfortunate of becoming more personally acquainted with the terror of the Tatmadaw, which regularly brought death and destruction to his community in Karenni state. When he reached his breaking point, he joined a Karenni resistance group, but he found that he was still looking for something more. His prayers found an answer in 1997, when he came into contact with David Eubank, the American missionary who founded the Free Burma Rangers (FBR). Monkey took advantage of their tutorials in basic medical aid as well as photojournalism. While their mobile medical clinic provided relief, Monkey conducted interviews and filmed footage to document the Tatmadaw's ongoing atrocities. Monkey eventually became an FBR trainer both in Myanmar and abroad. Although the Christian faith animates much of the work that Monkey and the wider FBR team do, they do not limit their service to Christian communities.Since the coup, Monkey and the FBR team have more than had their hands full in training the many Burmese youths who have flocked to their camps. Monkey is primarily charged with teaching them photojournalism. “We want the world to know what is happening in Burma,” he explains. As bad as the current times are, Monkey sees an opportunity for a degree of unity and solidarity that he has never before witnessed in his country. Still, he has seen too much to naively assume that disparate groups banding together could be enough to stand up against the Burmese military's cruelty and inhumanity that knows no bounds. This is largely why he is so focused on raising awareness through photojournalism, so that the story of what is really happening in Myanmar gets out.

This week David Eubank from the Free Burma Rangers (FBR) joins the podcast to talk about his missionary calling. David talks about doing justice, but we need to avoid revenge. While not easy, we need to instead correct the injustice with love. FBR respond by getting the news out in war torn areas (Burma, Sudan, Kurdistan, Iraq, and Ukraine) and supplying first aid treatment, while sharing and showing the love of Jesus. There are three rules in FBR: You have to do if for love, You can't run if others can not run (don't be a coward), and Be able to read and write. David shares his harrowing stories of being under fire alongside his family. David discusses how he has learned to allow God to move by praying, here is my request, but if not. While Washington has expressed “strong opposition” to a new Turkish military operation in Syria, sources have also indicated that Turkey is spurning all mediation efforts. Turkey is threatening to mount a fresh ground assault against the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces in northeast Syria after a wave of airstrikes that left 11 civilians and numerous Kurdish fighters dead. US officials say they are trying to de-escalate the situation, but their Syrian Kurdish allies say Washington's response has been weak and is unlikely to stave off another Turkish offensive. David Eubank, founder of the Free Burma Rangers, a volunteer group that assists civilians in conflict zones, came out of northeast Syria yesterday where he witnessed the devastation wreaked by Turkey's latest airstrikes. He told Al-Monitor that the sense of betrayal by the United States is even deeper than when President Donald Trump gave Turkey the green light to invade large chunks of northeast Syria in 2019. What's the difference between justice and revenge? Is it really possible to love your enemy? David Eubank says that the answer lies beyond philosophy and religion. Only the power of Jesus can transform a human heart and cause love to the seeming unlovely. “Real love is never crazy,” David says. Once you recognize that every person is created in God's image, you come to see the intrinsic value of human life. Sacrifice is the denial of oneself for the benefit of another. When we think of sacrifice, we often think of those who bravely give their lives in service of their country - a soldier who gives their life to save the lives of his brothers in arms. But rarely do we see sacrifice offered towards complete strangers. One such man is David Eubank. For over 20 years, David, his family, and their fellow-aid workers have risked everything for the benefit of strangers who later became like family. By telling David's story, we will seek to learn just what it takes for us to lay down our own needs for the betterment of others, and to do it with joy and thanksgiving.  Hosted by Jamie Adams and featuring David Eubank himself, former Army Ranger and member of U.S. special forces and founder of the humanitarian movement Free Burma Rangers. David Eubank didn't know that a single moment on a jungle path in 1997 would prove to be so eventful for not only his own life, but an entire nation as well. Living in Thailand at the time, David was growing distressed hearing about a Burmese military operation that was displacing over half a million people. So loading up four backpacks with medicine, he decided to travel the border to see if he could find anyone who needed help. One thing led to another, and that trip ultimately give birth to the Free Burma Rangers (FBR). In this episode's wide-ranging interview, David goes into his background of 25 years living and supporting those many ethnic communities, sharing what he's learned from the different groups, the various hardships they've faced, and even the strange and exotic foods he's sampled.  As a Christian, David's faith in a higher power has been a major factor in his work. To this day, his faith animates all of his humanitarian work. “That's the heart of why I do it,” he says. Even in these most difficult of times, he draws on the reservoir of his faith; in spite of his first-hand knowledge of 25 years of Tatmadaw cruelty, he still tries to love his enemy. Still, this does not mean allowing entire populations to be victimized without recourse, and David acknowledges that self-defense, whether on an individual or communal level, is a basic human right everywhere in the world. Compounding the Myanmar military's brutal tactics used has been the almost total lack of response or engagement by any international actor, a fact which has surprised and greatly distressed David, especially given the extent of the unfolding humanitarian disaster and Myanmar's geopolitical importance. He believes there is so much good that other nations and foreign entities could still do now, if only they chose to.  Support this podcast

David Eubank, who is originally from Texas, lives in the jungles of the Karen state near the Thai-Myanmar border, along with his wife and children. The Karen people have been fighting the Myanmar military for decades, in the world's longest civil war. Since the military coup on 1 February, the Karen Nation Union has sided with a people's uprising demanding democracy is restored, and has launched attacks on the military. The army has responded with bombings that have displaced tens of thousands of people. David has seen first-hand what has happened. Hundreds of young protesters have fled to ethnic areas, including into the area David is working in. His group, The Free Burma Rangers, has provided survival and medical training to some of these young people who want to continue fighting to restore democracy. He is also part of an underground railway helping to smuggle out politicians, artists and activists who are on the military's wanted list. Doh Say's life work has been leading to this moment. He became involved with the Free Burma Rangers through his longtime friendship with David Eubank, the founder of the group. The Rangers are a humanitarian service group dedicated to supporting the country' ethnic minorities in their long-running struggle against the depredations and brutality of the military.  Doh Say has spent over 20 years training leaders of the country's various ethnic groups in this work. Today, however, his training camps are filling up not with representatives from the neighboring tribes, as is usual, but with Bamar youths arriving from the cities, who have decided to willingly face danger and discomfort in order to learn the skills necessary to support the undoing of the military terror organization. Doh Say has grown spiritually through his relationship with the Free Burma Rangers, noting that previously, “I didn't really know God and Jesus.”  Developing a deeper faith in God eventually challenged him to move beyond his comfort zone. He admits that certain missions terrified him from the outset, given the danger and hardship he would endure, but his faith and prayer carried him through.  Forgiving an enemy that has inflicted decades of terror on local communities is no easy thing. And yet, despite all this, the Free Burma Rangers still encourage defections and welcome soldiers who abandon their post. Towards the end of the interview, David Eubank joins us, and offers up a range of stories. He first shares what Doh Say's modesty precludes him from mentioning, noting the “many times” his own children's lives were saved by his friend. He then talks about accepting a soldier who defected into their community, and was welcomed and forgiven despite admitting to the most heinous of crimes: murdering a pregnant woman. David closes by recalling an incident where he accidentally ran into General Aung Min, and how he invited his adversary, a Buddhist, to join him in a Christian prayer. As for Doh Say, he wants to “send a message” to all communities to embrace forgiveness. This is not an easy task, and he knows it: “It's difficult [to forgive], especially those whose relatives or sisters, brothers, or mother got killed. But this is one of the ways to have a long-lasting solution for our country.” Support this podcast
