This week on Chewing, we talk about plants, Feld, and krill. First, Monica talks to Washington Post Food and Dining editor — and bestselling author — Joe Yonan about his new book, "Mastering the Art of Plant-Based Cooking"! Then Louisa talks to the chef and owner of one of the most polarizing new restaurants in Chicago — and former guest of Chewing, Jake Potashnick of Feld. Monica talks to the owner of Fry the Coop about why he only uses beef fat when frying. Lastly, Monica dares Louisa and Iris to taste canned krill — best known as whale food — but will they eat it?! chewing.xyz chicagotribune.com/chewingpodcast facebook.com/chewingpodcast Insta Louisa Chu @louisachu1 Monica Eng @monicaengreporter Links: Order Made in Chicago: Stories Behind 30 Great Hometown Bites by Monica Eng and David Hammond Music: Theme music: “Zhong Nan Hai” by Carsick Cars Outro music: “15 Minutes Older” by Carsick Cars Segments: "Garden (Say It like Dat)" by SZA “Big Cheese” by Nirvana “Spice Up Your Life” by Spice Girls “Shake Hands With Beef” by Primus

Today, we're joined by one of our favorite writers and thinkers, Vinson Cunningham, to discuss his excellent debut novel, Great Expectations, which tells the story of brilliant-but-unmoored young black man, David Hammond, who finds himself recruited — by fluke, folly, or fate — onto a historic presidential campaign for a certain charismatic Illinois senator. A staff writer at the New Yorker, Vinson also worked for Obama's 2008 campaign in his early twenties. (He bears at least some resemblance to his protagonist.) And his novel provides a wonderful jumping-off point for a deep discussion of political theater, the novel of ideas, race, faith, the meaning of Barack Obama, and the meaning of Kamala Harris. Also discussed: Christopher Isherwood, Saul Bellow, Garry Wills, Ralph Ellison, Marilynne Robinson, Paul Pierce, and Kobe Bryant! If you can't get enough Vinson, check out his podcast with Naomi Fry and Alexandra Schwartz, Critics at Large. You can't log onto a Facebook Tequila group without seeing Cristalino Tequila derided, abused, and generally treated as some kind of punch line. But … do those user groups reflect the average consumer? Does the average consumer matter as much as the more highly engaged consumers that populate these online groups? And does consumption itself matter as much as cultural heritage? And why do I like the average Tequila Cristalino more than I like the average Tequila? That's what I discuss with my past self on this time-travel episode of Agave Road Trip! Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. This episode is hosted by Lou Bank with special guest Lou Bank from the Past and filled with interview clips from Jaime Salas of Proximo and Jose Cuervo Tequila; Juan Eduardo Nuñez of Tequila El Viejito; Tequila-geek royalty Khrys Maxwell; dean of American whiskey journalism, Chuck Cowdery, and Barbara Engelskirchen from the National Museum of Mexican Art. For the first time in over 200 years, two broods of cicadas are emerging simultaneously. While we have answered what cicadas are, where they'll emerge, and if they bite, author and Newcity dining and drinking editor David Hammond is more concerned with how they taste. The author shares with host Jacoby Cochran some of his favorite cicada recipes. Want some more City Cast Chicago news? Then make sure to sign up for our Hey Chicago newsletter. Monica Eng knows a thing or two about how to talk and write about food in Chicago and beyond. She got her start at the Chicago Sun-Times as a copy clerk in high school and spent sixteen years as a reporter on the food scene for the Chicago Tribune. She went on to write for every major Chicago outlet and currently writes for Axios Chicago, where she covers a wide range of issues, from food policy, to dietary health and beyond. You can also hear her talk food with Tribune food critic Louisa Chu every week on their popular podcast, Chewing. Her new book with David Hammond, Made in Chicago: Stories Behind 30 Great Hometown Bites explores the history of some of the city's most iconic delights. Monica's natural curiosity and passion for food and people are crystal clear and on display in a lively episode that explores a career guided by Roger Ebert, the impact of AI on food journalism, her family's chop suey legacy, and so much more.

It's a great week for food in Chicago with Restaurant Week 2024 starting Friday. Hundreds of restaurants across the city will feature special tasting menus, giving Chicagoans the chance to try new spots and dishes. It's also a great time to try foods that were created here in Chicago that you may have not tried yet. Last year, host Jacoby Cochran sat down with Monica Eng and David Hammond, authors of "Made in Chicago: Stories Behind 30 Great Hometown Bites" to talk about favorite Chicago foods, their origin stories, and places you can try them out.
