We hear a lot about harm from AI and how the big platforms are focused on using AI and user data to enhance their profits. What about developing AI for good for the rest of us? What would it take to design AI systems that are beneficial to humans? In this episode, we talk with Mark Nitzberg who is Executive Director of CHAI or the UC Berkeley Center for Human-Compatible AI and head of strategic outreach for Berkeley AI Research. Mark began studying AI in the early 1980s and completed his PhD in Computer Vision and Human Perception under David Mumford at Harvard. He has built companies and products in various AI fields including The Blindsight Corporation, a maker of assistive technologies for low vision and active aging, which was acquired by Amazon. Mark is also co-author of The AI Generation which examines how AI reshapes human values, trust and power around the world. We talk with Mark about CHAI's goal of reorienting AI research towards provably beneficial systems, why it's hard to develop beneficial AI, variability in human thinking and preferences, the parallels between management OKRs and AI objectives, human-centered AI design and how AI might help humans realize the future we prefer.Links:Learn more about UC Berkeley CHAISubscribe to get Artificiality delivered to your emailLearn more about Sonder StudioP.S. Gregory Fitz is a lifelong midwesterner recently transplanted to the PNW. He doesn't work in tech and he isn't a Seahawks fan yet. Minnesotans wear flannel, too, so he might be grunge. After years of chasing migratory great lakes fish with two-handed rods, he is now in the process of getting a beatdown on the hallowed natal steelhead and salmon rivers flowing into the Pacific Ocean. It is an exercise in humility. His fishing writing has appeared in The Fly Fish Journal, The Drake, This is Fly, Swing the Fly and the Mend Provision blog. His art can be seen at www.gregoryfitz.net. In 2001, Jeff Galbraith and his wife Jessie Lu moved from Idaho to Seattle and started frequency: The Snowboarder's Journal. Over the next eight years, that first title would be followed by The Ski Journal in 2006, and in 2009, The Flyfish Journal. Since its inception, The Flyfish Journal has carved out a unique place in the world of arts and letters in fly fishing. Galbraith's dedication to finding the best possible content--and to presenting that content in archival quality issues that will be at home on your bookshelf for years to come--has given the lie to the commonly heard maxim that "print is dead." We all need electricity. It's something we often don't even think about - we just switch the laptop on or plug our phone charger in. But electricity has to come from somewhere - and ideally it should be environmentally friendly. So is wind energy the solution we've all been waiting for? How eco-friendly is it, really? Join us and professor Simon Hogg from Furham University when we find out. Music by Scott Holmes, David Mumford, Rachmaninow played by Vadim Chaimovich and Chris Zabriskie. A sound by GoGo. Today I tell the story of how 4 unlikely partners, 3 hip-hop artists, 2 epic failures and 1 ulcer lead to me becoming a filmmaker. What as the last funny anecdote you heard, or perhaps told. I bet you a million dollars it was tied to yours of someone else's pain, suffering and/or unfortunate mishap. Naturally, you couldn't laugh about it then. But today it's fair game. Why is there such an uncanny relationship between tragedy and time? Pain and posterity? Today we're going to look at that dynamic and use as a case study my short-lived experience as a wannabe hip-hop mogul. Hilarity will ensue. In the second segment of the show I introduce a new segment called "Shooting Sunshine." It's a mini Radio Film School series about the making of a short documentary film series called Mixed in America: Stories of Race Relations & Identity in the Proverbial Melting Pot. This is a personal project I started way back in 2011.Finally, after the credits we have another funny bonus segment. This episode is sponsored by Song Freedom.
