What if you could help someone completely transform their career in just 45 minutes, not by training them to be someone they're not, but by revealing who they've always been? In this episode, Steve Woodruff, author of "Clarity Wins" and "The Point," shares his unexpected journey from Vanderbilt astronomy student dreaming of becoming an astronaut to becoming the "King of Clarity" who's spent 20 years helping professionals discover and communicate their true identity. Through a pivotal relationship with a manager-friend who made one simple observation ("Let Steve run with sales and Rob run with service because that's what you're good at"), Steve discovered that fitting people into their strengths, not training them to overcome weaknesses, is the ultimate key to success. From consulting with pharmaceutical giants like Pfizer, Novartis, and GSK to leading 100 emerging leaders globally during the pandemic to transforming his own pastor's preaching, Steve has developed the Clarity Fuel Formula, a brain science-backed framework that helps anyone cut through noise and connect powerfully. His philosophy is simple but revolutionary: "You can't read the label of the jar you're in." We need someone on the outside to reveal who we really are. Steve reveals how he helps people experience that jaw-dropping moment when someone finally sees them (and they see themselves), why the first 15 seconds of any interaction matter most, how "memory darts" beat elevator pitches every time, and why his biggest professional thrill is attaching the right words to someone's identity and watching their entire career trajectory transform. [00:03:59] The Journey: From Aspiring Astronaut to King of Clarity Childhood dream: becoming an astronaut Started at Vanderbilt University studying astronomy Hit a wall with calculus and physics, realized he loved words more than numbers Shifted to psychology, fascinated by how the human mind and communication work Moved into business sales and marketing [00:07:39] What Steve Does: Revealing Who People Really Are Works with corporations (pharma/biotech primarily) on communication training Developed the Clarity Fuel Formula: framework for clear communication in every format Real passion: entrepreneurs, solos, small businesses, and individuals Specializes in helping people discover their identity, purpose, and how to articulate it [00:09:23] Most Impactful Result: The Infrastructure Builder Met Jason, a sales training manager at pharma company, for networking lunch Through conversation, Steve identified Jason's core strength: infrastructure building Gave Jason the exact words to describe his superpower Jason found perfect role at training organization in disarray [00:12:00] Pandemic Pivot: Training 100 Leaders Globally via Zoom Companies forced to move training online during COVID Steve led personal branding workshop for 100 emerging leaders globally All done from his desk via Zoom, no travel for days required [00:14:38] What Inspires Steve: The Jaw-Drop Moment Most people (including himself for years) are only half-aware of who they really are People are guessing, trying different things without true north Has unique ability to ask questions and see themes emerge quickly The magic moment: 45-60 minutes in, holds up "figurative mirror" [00:17:04] The Relationship That Changed Everything During first 10-year career job, Steve and colleague split country for sales/service One person better at sales, other better at service, but both trying to do both This insight plus reading StrengthsFinder completely revolutionized Steve's view of work [00:21:41] Recent Impact: Transforming His Pastor's Preaching Steve's work applies 100% to church settings, not just business Pastor came to dinner, Steve discussed "memory darts" concept Memory darts: short, vivid ideas using analogies, illustrations, or stories instead of elevator pitches Pastor wanted to improve preaching and asked Steve for help [00:23:58] Where to Find Steve & His Resources Company: Clarity Fuel (clarityfuel.com redirects to stevewoodruff.com) Most active on LinkedIn with newsletter and regular posts about clarity Two books: "Clarity Wins" (branding, niches, pigeonholes) and "The Point" (universal framework for clear communication) The challenge: "The Point" is for 8 billion people, anyone, any role, any place, anytime [00:26:40] The First 15 Seconds: Why They Matter Most Success boils down to the first 15 seconds of any interaction Must earn attention with something interesting, relevant, and compelling Get rid of the elevator pitch (telling and selling) Learn to answer "What do you do?" in 15 seconds that makes people say "Huh? Tell me more" Biggest problem: TMI (Too Much Information) KEY QUOTES "You can't read the label of the jar you're in. We are not able to be objective about ourselves. We need someone on the outside who can look at us and say, this is really who you are." - Steve Woodruff "I'm not here to train people to become what they're not. I'm here to reveal to them who they are. When you try to train people to be what they're not, you're setting yourself and them up for a world of hurt." - Steve Woodruff "We have stewardship over our lives. We have one life. If we're wasting it, even with good intentions doing the wrong thing, that's a terrible shame." - Steve Woodruff "People don't need information. They need to know why they should care." - Steve Woodruff "Nobody wants to hear your monologue. They want to hear something that makes them say, 'What in the world are you talking about? Tell me about it.' And we're off and running." - Steve Woodruff CONNECT WITH STEVE WOODRUFF

Send us a textIn this episode, Dr. Daphna Barbeau speaks with Dr. Paige Terrien Church and Dr. Ashwini Lakshmanan about one of the most delicate yet essential aspects of neonatal care: communication. Drawing on their recent articles, the discussion highlights how the words we choose in the NICU profoundly shape families' experiences, hopes, and perceptions of their child's future.Dr. Church addresses the discomfort many clinicians feel when discussing disability, emphasizing how entrenched medical training and ableism can unintentionally bias conversations. She introduces the concepts of microethics—the subtle, everyday interactions between families and providers—and how language choices like “risk” versus “possibility” can dramatically shift tone and meaning. The group explores how framing outcomes around abilities and opportunities, rather than limitations, helps families make sense of uncertainty with dignity and clarity.Dr. Lakshmanan's qualitative work brings in the voices of parents, revealing how uncertainty permeates the NICU journey and affects bonding, mental health, and confidence. Together, the guests highlight strategies for building trust, addressing parental guilt, and creating systems of support during the transition from hospital to home. This episode challenges clinicians to pause, examine their own biases, and recognize language as a tool as powerful as any intervention delivered in the NICU.Support the showAs always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com. Joe Tamburino stops by to provide legal analysis of today's tragedy. They explore multiple layers and questions stemming this morning's mass shooting at the Annunciation Catholic School's church in South Minneapolis.

Well if that was the last Grand Prix at Imola for the forseeable future, it didn't leave us with a sour taste in the mouth and while it wasn't a classic race it was still better than some of the parades we've had round the circuit for the last 5 years since F1 made a return there in the patched together 2020 season. This week we take a look back at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the first of 2 Italian races this season and the start of the European races to boot. Could McLaren and in particular Oscar Piastri keep up their dominant form from the first quarter of the season, now we're not flying away as much, or with the appearance of a few upgrades (as is traditional at this time of year), would we see more than the papaya cars in the mix?The answer was both sort of yes and sort of no as Max Verstappen spoiled the papaya party this week by completely turning around a RedBull that he wasn't overly keen on up to Saturday afternoon to pull out his most Max-like performances of the season so far. After "that move" on turn 2, there was seemingly no stopping him from running away with it. Especially when McLaren decided to let their drivers race rather than try to strategise a win!Obviously we're as tangent heavy as always (for some reason that you'll hear) and we've ended up with Franz Ferdinand as our featured band of the week (when did this become a music pod?) And as a bonus, while he's not here this week, Dan has promised to be on more shows this year!If you want to join in with the chat during the races (along with practice and qualifying) head over to our Discord where there's always a great crowd of people to watch along with. Edward Fishman, author of Chokepoints: American Power in the Age of Economic Warfare, is back to discuss the immense power of tariffs, and economic leverage—and how Trump's understanding (or lack thereof) of these tools. Plus, Trump grumbles to British PM Keir Starmer that Ukraine isn't paying back U.S. aid, and in The Spiel, what Democrats can actually stand for beyond simply resisting Trump. Mark Cuban suggests it's about execution, not slogans. "I would rather find what makes us similar than what makes us different." "What would it take for you to feel confident in the work that you're doing?" In this long overdue episode of the Better Call Daddy podcast, host Reena Friedman Watts reunites with her old friend Jaime Cohen for a candid discussion that transcends the ordinary. Jaime, a passionate communicator and advocate, opens up about her journey through the complexities of identity, trauma, and the search for connection in an increasingly polarized world. As they dive into the nuances of being neurodivergent, Jaime shares her experiences with bullying and the impact of anti-Semitism throughout her life. She reflects on the transformative power of community, recounting how her time at a summer camp in Wisconsin helped her embrace her true self in a world that often felt hostile. The conversation takes a poignant turn as they explore the recent events surrounding October 7th, a day that shook Jaime to her core, leading her to reassess her relationships and the importance of empathy in times of crisis. Reena and Jaime also discuss the significance of open dialogue, highlighting the need for curiosity and understanding in conversations about differing perspectives. Jaime emphasizes the value of vulnerability and the strength that comes from sharing one's story, encouraging listeners to reflect on their own journeys and the legacies they wish to create. With a sprinkle of humor and heartfelt insights, this episode is a beautiful reminder that true connection lies in our shared humanity, regardless of the labels we carry. Message by Larry Osborne on November 2, 2024. Our job is to represent Jesus well. But influence and persuasion take more than just true words. It takes the right words, at the right time, in the right way. The Apostle Peter tells us exactly what that looks like as we continue our study through his letter to a persecuted and scattered group of early Christians. As emotional as the service, music and eulogy were, it was a tender moment between two of her grandchildren that brought me to tears. Let me explain.

For many physicians, having serious illness conversations with patients — talking about a dire prognosis or the futility of curative treatments — is one of the most daunting aspects of patient care. But to palliative care physician Shunichi Nakagawa, MD, these conversations are fundamentally about communicating the honest truth in an elegant, considerate, and humane way. Dr. Nakagawa, the director of the Inpatient Palliative Care Service at Columbia University Medical Center, joins us in this episode to discuss both his unique personal journey, as well as his insightful approach to figuring out what really matters to patients during critical moments in their lives. He shares what it was like completing his surgical training in Japan, than coming to the United States with the hope of becoming a liver transplant surgeon, before having those hopes dashed when he found out he was ineligible to work as a surgeon in the US due to his hepatitis carrier status, and finally discovering his true calling in geriatrics and palliative care. We also discuss cultural challenges in thinking about the end of life, why it is so difficult for physicians to communicate with their patients about serious illness, how clinicians ought to approach shared decision making, and why, when done well, this can be one of the most meaningful and rewarding parts of doctoring. In this episode, you'll hear about: 2:34 - How Dr. Nakagawa entered a career in medicine in Japan5:33 - Dr. Nakagawa's unique journey through medical training, from surgery to palliative care 16:25 - The three-stage process that Dr. Nakagawa follows when communicating challenging medical information to patients28:10 - Delivering medical advice in a succinct way when speaking to patients and their family members 36:14 - Lessons on what works and what doesn't work in sensitive patient communication Dr. Shunichi Nakagawa can be found on Twitter/X at @snakagawa_md. A picture is worth a thousand words, but are they the right words? Professional photos build trust, credibility, and emotional connections with your audience, making them essential for building your online presence and growing your business. However, entrepreneurs often make common mistakes during photoshoots, such as not taking a variety of photos, using poor lighting, or wearing clothes that don't match their brand colors. Creating a lookbook with styles that align with your brand and being mindful of backgrounds and clothing colors can help minimize post-shoot editing. Additionally, regularly updating your professional photos every couple of years, or more frequently if you are highly visible online, keeps your brand image current and authentic. Being in front of the camera can be intimidating, but as with so much in life, the best thing you can do is relax and have fun so your best self can shine. Quotes “It does make your website look incredibly good when you have high quality photos of yourself.” “It is another form of positioning, how you want to be perceived or, you know, authentically projecting your image online.” “We can put our words out there, but putting a photo along with those words on social media posts just helps it stand out more.” “Remember, the brain consumes images, I think faster than text.” “ If you're a speaker, or a podcaster, great to get photos with your microphone.” “Have yourself photographed in your element.” “Another popular tip that we often give our clients is make sure your hands are visible in photos because that is a trust builder too.” “I think our designer would be really upset If we didn't mention, think of the color of your clothing before you do your photoshoot. She's spent so much time photoshopping people's clothing color, so it matches their website and their brand colors.” “Common mistakes entrepreneurs make when it comes to personal brand photography, and how to avoid them, I would say they don't take enough variety of photos. Having more is always better.” “Most of the time, we are our target audience, just a few steps ahead.” “It's so important to tap into who you truly are, and not try to project an image of yourself that you're not when doing a photo shoot.” “Just be who you really are, and your right clients will be attracted to you. And it's okay if your photos don't resonate with everybody, because everybody's not going to be your ideal target client.”
