While avian influenza had already been detected in cattle and other mammals, including in the United States, the infection of a sheep will increase concern over the potential impact of the disease's spread. There have been cases among humans which have ranged in severity from no symptoms to, in rare cases, death. But there has not yet been any confirmed transmission between humans. The virus is spread through contact with infected birds or other species, including through touching their droppings and bedding, although people can also catch the virus by killing or preparing infected poultry for cooking. Avian flu has been detected in cattle in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control reporting 41 cases and 989 dairy herds affected as of last Friday. Experts say the risk of avian flu to the general public is very low. Mexico Pushing For More Domestic Pork Facing Trade War Mexico has become a huge importer of U.S. pork, but the government in Mexico City is now talking about self-sufficiency as trade tensions with Washington are about to intensify. In a recent meeting with domestic producers, the Mexican Agriculture Minister pointed out that the country's own pork sector only meets 53% of demand. Imports last year reached 1.4 million metric tons, a large majority from the neighboring United States. President Donald Trump, in early February, threatened 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, imposed taxes on large numbers of imports from both countries in early March and has vowed to tariff most other products on April 2. Canada has already retaliated against some U.S. products including chicken, while Mexico is poised to impose tariffs on exports including meats if the United States carries out its threat next week.  Pork demand has soared as Mexico has become more affluent. Last year, 38% of U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports went to Mexico. By value, exports to Mexico jumped 10% in 2024 to nearly $2.6 billion, more than the next two markets, China/Hong Kong and Japan combined. The value of U.S. pork exports to Mexico has more than doubled from $1.15 billion in 2020, and the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service projected further growth this year before trade policy disruptions. Sustainable Beef Plant Comes To Nebraska A crowd estimated at more than 1,200 people witnessed a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a $400-million cattle processing plant this week in North Platte, Neb., a project that Sustainable Beef LLC originally announced in 2021. The new facility is expected to provide about 850 jobs and expand beef processing capacity in the area in addition to establishing more long-term sustainable growth for local cattle producers and family farms. The facility is expected to process an estimated 1,500 head per day, according to Sustainable Beef officials.  We will have more on Sustainable Beef LLC and its new fed cattle grid pricing system with Red Angus Cattle on next week's program.   RanchChannel.Com Now Has The Futures Markets & New Listings Futures Markets RanchChannel.com now has futures markets at your fingertips!  Feeder Cattle, Live Cattle, Corn, Wheat, Soybeans, Soybean Oil, Milk Class IV, and Ethanol.  Information is provided by DTN and market information may be delayed by as much as 10 minutes.  Click Here for more information! January Beef Exports Above Year-Ago; Pork Trends Modestly Lower

Exports of U.S. beef trended higher than a year ago in January, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). Pork exports were slightly below last January’s large totals, despite another outstanding performance in Mexico and Central America. In this week’s audio report, USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom details the areas seeing growth in exports and how those exports are tied to free trade agreements. January beef exports reached 102,840 metric tons (mt), up 3% year-over-year, while value increased 5% to $804.6 million. Growth was driven in part by larger exports to China and Canada, while exports to South Korea were steady in volume but higher in value. Strong value increases were also achieved in other key markets, including Taiwan, the Caribbean, Central America and the ASEAN. Exports of beef variety meat were the largest in nearly two years, led by larger shipments to Mexico, Egypt, Canada and China/Hong Kong. Pork exports totaled 243,965 mt in January, down 3% from a year ago, while value eased 2% to $668 million. Shipments soared to Central America and were the fourth largest on record to leading market Mexico. Exports also increased year-over-year to China/Hong Kong, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand, but these results were offset by sharply lower shipments to Japan, Korea and Colombia. A detailed summary of the January export results for U.S. pork, beef and lamb, including market-specific highlights, is available from the USMEF website.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's likely that beef production for this year will be  only 509 million pounds – 1.9% - lower than a year ago, the report said. That's a sharp improvement from the expected 8% drop forecast a year ago. Meanwhile, the USDA held steady with its beef import forecast, anticipating a 12% rise, and its expectations for an 8% drop in beef exports. That means that the country's supply of beef per capita is roughly unchanged, according to Steiner analysis.  Beef Exports Fall As Imports Rise Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist recently wrote for meatingplace.com saying that U.S. beef trade continues to evolve in the face of a unique domestic cattle market situation.  Beef exports in February were down 1.3% year over year with the two-month total thus far in 2024 down 2.6%.  This follows a 2023 year over year decrease of 14.3% from record 2022 beef exports.  Beef exports in the first two months of the year are down year over year from most of the top markets; including number one Japan, number two South Korea, and number three China/Hong Kong.  Additionally, Canada, the number five market is down 2.0% thus far in 2024, along with number six Taiwan.  Mexico, which had been the number three market as recently as 2019, is currently the number four market but recovering.  Beef exports to Mexico were up in January and February. Beef imports in February were up 23.8% year over year and are up 31.9% in the first two months of the year.  Beef imports this year are led by Brazil, who jumps out strongly to fill the “other country” quota early in the year, with shipments moderating after two or three months in the face of the over-quota tariff.  Imports from Brazil are up 41.8% year over year thus far in 2024.  Imports from Australia are up sharply so far this year.  Canada is the number two import source, slightly ahead of Australia and up 9.0 percent year over year.  New Zealand is the number four beef import source and is up 48.6 percent thus far in 2024.   Beef exports continue to face headwinds as beef production decreases and beef prices increase in the U.S. market.  A generally strong U.S. dollar adds additional headwinds, making U.S. beef imports more expensive to international customers.  At the same time, decreasing domestic beef supplies in the U.S., coupled with higher prices, attracts additional beef imports, with the strong dollar adding additional incentive for beef imports.  As is typical, beef imports are heavily dominated by imports of lean processing beef to supplement decreasing supplies of non fed beef in the U.S.  Decreasing lean beef supplies, coupled with strong ground beef demand in the U.S. is pushing 90 percent lean prices (and ground beef prices) to record levels.  Fed beef (steer and heifer) production is declining, but the large percentage of yield grade 4 and 5 in feedlot cattle means that the supply of fatty (50 percent lean) trimmings is high relative to lean beef supplies and stimulating strong demand for domestic and imported lean processing beef to increase ground beef production.   UPCOMING BULL SALES ANGUS CHAROLAIS HEREFORD GELBVIEH BALANCER RED ANGUS SIMMENTAL SIMANGUS SOUTH DEVON POUNDMAKER NAVIGATOR   DLCC Ranch:  April 20, 2024, Pierz, Minnesota Four Hill Farm North Country Angus Alliance: April 21, 2024, Bagley, Minnesota Spruce Hill Ranch: May 2, 2024, Bowman, ND BULL SALE REPORT & RESULTS Churchill Cattle Company Van Newkirk Herefords Gardiner Angus Ranch Cow Camp Ranch Jungels Shorthorn Farms Ellingson Angus Edgar Brothers Angus Schaff Angus Valley Prairie Hills Gelbvieh Clear Springs Cattle Company CK Cattle Mrnak Hereford Ranch Frey Angus Ranch Hoffmann Angus Farms Topp Herefords River Creek Farms Upstream Ranch Gustin's Diamond D Gelbvieh Schiefelbein Farms Wasem Red Angus Raven Angus Krebs Ranch Yon Family Farms Chestnut Angus Eichacker Simmentals & JK Angus Windy Creek Cattle Company Pedersen Broken Heart Ranch Mar Mac Farms Warner Beef Genetics Arda Farms & Freeway Angus Leland Red Angus & Koester Red Angus Fast - Dohrmann - Strommen RBM Livestock Weber Land & Cattle Sundsbak Farms Hidden Angus Wheatland Cattle Company Miller Angus Farms L 83 Ranch U2 Ranch Vollmer Angus Ranch A & B Cattle Carter Angus Farms Roller Ranch Montgomery Ranch Jorgensen Farms FEATURING Robby Bondurant, Ph.D. Willard Lemaster Furst - McNess Company https://www.mcness.com/ https://www.mcness.com/legacy-forward-beef/ @FurstMcNessCompany   Austin Henderson Stockmen's Livestock http://www.gostockmens.com/ @GoStockmens @AustinDanJohn   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos   Questions & Concerns From The Field? Henny Sender, after several decades of writing on international finance for the Finance Times and Wall Street Journal, presently runs Apsara Advisory, a New York-based consultancy. She joins Kopi Time to talk about her sense of the challenges facing the Chinese economy, especially the weakness in consumer sentiment. While recognising the wisdom behind self-reliance and trade openness, Henny flags several areas of concern, including property and stock market woes, as well as regulatory overhang. On Hong Kong, where she has lived for many years, Henny is blunt in her assessment. She sees substantial room available for the public sector to address affordable housing, an issue that is at the heart of the city's competitiveness. On India, Henny sees a welcome rise in aspiration and optimism. She would however like to see more efforts to scale up manufacturing, address climate risks, and reduce protectionism for local industries.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The long-awaited Swap Connect program, which is poised to attract more overseas capital inflows into the world's second-largest bond market, commenced trading on Monday.Northbound trading of Swap Connect provides a secure channel for international investors to trade interest rate swap products on the mainland via a connection between institutions in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the mainland. The program aims to facilitate global investors' management of interest rate risks arising from their allocation to mainland bonds, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority said in a statement.Financial institutions such as HSBC, Bank of China (Hong Kong), the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China CITIC Bank and Deutsche Bank executed the first batches of trade for overseas and Hong Kong institutional investors on the first trading day.Guotai Junan International said that its subsidiary Guotai Junan Securities Hong Kong completed the first group of five swap transactions totaling 100 million yuan ($14.37 million). At the online launch ceremony, People's Bank of China Vice-Governor Pan Gongsheng, said the rollout of the program marked an important step in China's financial opening-up and reflected the firm determination of the central government to support the long-term prosperity, stability and development of the HKSAR.Wang Linggui, deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, said the central government supports Hong Kong, and the mainland is continuously improving the level of financial cooperation in order to "attract more international capital to the nation, share the country's development dividends, and enhance Hong Kong's competitive advantages."Under Swap Connect, the China Foreign Exchange Trade System and overseas electronic trading platforms recognized by the PBOC will jointly provide trading services for Hong Kong and international investors. OTC Clear, the subsidiary of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, and Shanghai Clearing House will provide central clearing services for Hong Kong, international and mainland investors.Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said at the launch ceremony that Swap Connect will have a "synergistic effect" with Bond Connect. Initiated in 2017, Bond Connect allows global investors to trade onshore bonds in the mainland bond market through the trading and settlement platforms of Hong Kong."The new measures will provide international investors with richer investment and risk management tools, and strengthen Hong Kong's position as the world's largest offshore renminbi business center and international risk management center," Lee said.Eddie Yue Wai-man, chief executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, said at the launch that Swap Connect is another milestone in financial cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland."It will create favorable conditions for global investors to increase their participation in the onshore bond market, and carries special significance for enhancing the recognition of and confidence in RMB (renminbi) bonds in the international market," Wai-man said. Swap Connect will also provide new opportunities for Hong Kong's financial institutions and strengthen the city's role as a global risk-management center and offshore renminbi hub, he added. The HKMA said it will closely monitor the implementation of Swap Connect trading together with relevant Hong Kong and mainland regulators, and enhance operational arrangements in accordance with market developments and investors' needs.HKEX Chief Executive Officer Nicolas Aguzin said that existing financial market connection programs and Swap Connect will facilitate mainland and international investors making diversified investments in different asset classes. This will also help the internationalization process of the renminbi, as the currency is used for bidding, trading and settlement, Aguzin said.Fan Mingxi, head of China Global Markets at Switzerland-based investment bank UBS, said: "The implementation of Swap Connect will stimulate greater enthusiasm to participate in the world's second-largest bond market. The Chinese mainland's derivatives market has great potential for development."Swap Connect's clearing link is a highly novel arrangement that has not been used between two derivatives clearinghouses before, said Terry Yang, a partner at global law firm Clifford Chance Hong Kong, adding that both parties will need to study the differences of the two distinct legal systems.Inflow英/ˈɪnfləʊ/ 美/ˈɪnfloʊ/n.流入Monetary英/ˈmʌnɪtri/ 美/ˈmɑːnɪteri/adj.货币的,金融的

This week in Asian American politics: - Joe Biden signs the Respect for Marriage Act, which sounds like something conservatives would make up to support a "traditional marriage" but it actually protects same-sex marriage and interracial marriage. All it took was Joe Biden's entire life for him to come around on gay people! - Okinawa is home to 75% of US military bases in Japan, and there are many Okinawans who have protested against the troops for years for leaving military waste in the country, on top of multiple acts of gendered violence. If there's one country where you shouldn't leave trash, it's Japan. - China has been pushing Google to remove Glory to Hong Kong, a song written during the Hong Kong protests a few years ago. Google, surprisingly, says no! - Indonesia published a new Criminal Code, and one section provides protections to sexpats (gross). Tourists' marital status won't be checked at hotels, spas, salons, etc. and for them, having sex outside of marriage is not a crime. tfw when you hate sexpats but need the money from tourism. - VICE published a 45 minute panel with Asian Americans of different ethnicities and political leanings. The panel was on the model minority myth and Stop Asian Hate, and we watched it so you don't have to worry about your blood pressure. -- WHAT'S POLITICALLY ASIAN PODCAST? China has one of the largest queer populations in the world, but what does it mean to be queer in a Confucian society in which kinship roles, ties, and ideologies are of paramount importance? This book analyzes queer cultures in China, offering an alternative to western blueprints of queer individual identity. Using a critical approach—“queering Chinese kinship”—Lin Song scrutinizes the relationship between queerness and family relations, questioning the Eurocentric assumption of the separation of queerness from family ties. Offering five case studies of queer representations, Queering Chinese Kinship: Queer Public Culture in Globalizing China (Hong Kong UP, 2021)also challenges the tendency in current scholarship to understand queer cultures as predominantly marginalized. Shedding light on cultural expressions of queerness and kinship, this book highlights queer politics as an integral part of contemporary Chinese public culture. Dr. Lin Song is a scholar of media and cultural studies, and Assistant Professor in the School of Journalism & Communication at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China. He holds a PhD in Gender Studies from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and is currently working on projects related to Emotional and algorithmic governance in China during the COVID-19 outbreak, and Erotic self-representation and queer cultural production in Chinese DIY pornography. U.S. beef exports posted another strong performance in February, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation, led by excellent value growth in key Asian and Latin American markets. Pork exports trended lower year-over-year, as larger shipments to Mexico and Japan did not offset the continued decline in demand from China/Hong Kong.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
