Mark Visser continues the new series on Lessons from the Life of David, building towards the introduction of David. Samuel is tasked anoint the first king of Israel and it seems God chose the tallest and most handsome young man to be the first king. Was this the right decision? How does David become king when he is not the son of Saul?
In this study on David's life, we uncover key lessons from pivotal moments. Saul, Israel's wavering king, tries to eliminate David, the future anointed king. David's strong sense of identity as God's chosen future ruler is evident. In another episode, David encounters a sleeping Saul. Though urged to harm him, David refrains, aware that God is in charge of rulership. This emphasizes how understanding one's identity provides direction. Just as David's grasp of his identity guided his choices, believers can find purpose by recognizing their identity in Christ. Knowing oneself empowers sound decisions.

David, Saul, and Jonathan 2022 0120 Thursday of the Second Week of Ordinary Time
One of the harsh realities of life is the feeling of sometimes being mistreated by others. Whether in the workplace, on the sports field, by a family member or friend, or even the government. There are times we can feel hard done by. The question is, how do we respond – how should we respond – in these situations? If we're honest with ourselves, either in action or heart motive, the temptation is to strike back. To get even. “Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth!” we cry out! In our passage this week we get to explore this issue by returning once more to the Life of David, this time in 1 Samuel 24. Here we see a man oppressed, and yet who did not strike back in return. In this way, David points us to the radical way of the Cross and the Gospel. A Gospel that has something important to teach both the oppressed and the oppressors alike. Speaker: Timothy Gray

II Samuel 1-5 We are in the Nation Stream. David is now official king of Israel as we read through the International Standard Version today. 7streamsmethod.com | @7StreamsMethod | @serenatravis | #7Streams Commentary by Dr. Drake Travis Lord, these changes we see today were steps in the right direction. Yes, things were turbulent and messy but growth is rarely clean and neat and your hand was upon David in spite of all the intrigue and surprises that were not always pleasant. May our faith be equally as unshakable as we find David's to be - even when our days are stormy. Amen The Book of II Samuel IS the reign of David Saul is gone and what's worse for David is that his dear friend Jonathan is dead. The opening of II Sam. is grief for David. Yes, Saul spent much of his years on the throne trying to kill David. But David had a character rooted in his walk with God and Israel was God's land and Saul was Israel's King and David respected authority. So he had respect for Saul - odd as it may seem. David's reaction to someone who had 'finished off' Saul is another testament to the depth of honor that David had for the Lord's anointed. It is in order to mention that II Sam. 1-6 and I Chron. 11-16 is a different perspective on the same time- period. The two portions are worth reading concurrently so to get the full picture. He was now king of Israel, but needed to grieve a bit. His "farewell song" is a treasure. 2 - David was rightful king now but some of Saul's men just couldn't accept the transfer of power though the time had come and there was no other way to perceive this development. The battles and skirmishes are gruesome and unnecessary but Saul's "groupies" who couldn't see the bigger picture nor the changing times were ebullient and there were needless deaths because of it. It never is wise to be committed to a dead cause. Nevertheless those loyal to Saul had installed Saul's son; Ish-Bosheth as king over Israel. The move was illicit but so it goes. He was there as "king" for two years while David was the rightful king installed at Hebron. He was there for 7+1/2 years These years before he was moved up to Jerusalem there was warring between Saul's followers and David's. During these years David had children with six different wives. That was one way to pass the time... Though David's movement was growing and strengthening, Saul's was becoming weaker. 3 - Abner changes to become one of David's followers and supporters. If he hadn't been so intense and spiteful prior to doing this, perhaps there would have been more credibility to his move toward David. But since he joined with David before convincing everyone of David's men, Abner was murdered. The intrigue and entanglement seemed to mark these years between the death of Saul and David being fully enthroned in Jerusalem. 4 - In another incident, there were two ruffians that went to the house of Saul's son Ish-bosheth and killed him and brought I-B's head to David thinking it would please David. David's reaction was opposite and David had these two men killed. These were wild times in Hebron! 5 - Finally all the tribes gathered at Hebron and David is anointed King. He moves on Jerusalem even though the Jebusites living there vowed David would not come in. But David being valiant, he and his soldiers prevailed and Jerusalem became "the City of David". King Hyram of Tyre soon heard of David's triumph in Jerusalem and sent gifts. The Philistines too heard of David's ascension as King and they marched out twice to end this movement. David was victorious and decisively so. It's still "The City of David" almost 3030 years later!

In this episode, we see David and Saul make some terrible decisions, but as always, there is something we can learn from them looking back. David's choice leads him to the precipice of having to go to war against Israel, his very own people. While Saul, well, he continues down a long road to the dark side and asks for help from a witch. How did we get here? What turn in the road led to here? Listen on to find out. This story is found in I Samuel 27-28.
J.K. McKee of Messianic Apologetics responds to three categories of questions: Tanach (OT), Apostolic Scriptures (NT), and theology/Biblical Studies. 1. If polygamy is wrong, why did God give David Saul’s wives? 2. Is it possible that Melchizedek was a pre-Incarnate manifestation of Yeshua? 3. I do not believe it is Biblically normative to see females in leadership.
Saul pursued David from Keila to Ziph. In Keila God warned David Saul was coming. And so he and his men fled and Saul relented. Later the Ziphites came to Saul to trap David, and just before he was ready to attack David he received word the Philistines were invading and so he left.

On this Episode of More Than Medicine Justin and I speak with Radiologist Dr. David Saul. While David is one of Charlie’s closest friends, he is also a very talented physician. He graduated from Drexel College of Medicine which was followed by a residency in diagnostic radiology and a fellowship in pediatric radiology. While he specializes in pediatric radiology, he has practiced radiology for multiple Philadelphia area hospitals and health systems. Using David’s wide breadth of experience, we are able to follow up on the previous episode’s discussion of pain to talk about the dichotomous role of radiology in diagnosing pain. Justin and I learned a lot and have a new respect for radiologists. We hope you will too after listening to this episode.

Vicar Dave's Sermon from 8/11/19: “The Rise of David: Saul, a heart in Desperation” Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 28: 5-19
https://youtu.be/VM5fQh_IwaM 1 sam 22:6-23 Lots going on in this story- I want to focus on one part of this story- Doeg the edomite Killing the 85 priests. It’s a bloody massacre of a story. Why is it in here? What does it have to do with who we are as Christians in 2019 in Auburn Washington. Why does it matter and what does it mean?Lets establish some things hereDoeg is an edomite, possibly a high official . part of an ethnic tribe that hates Israel. Why was Doeg with Saul? Possibly to convert to Israel, maybe because God wanted him there. Chp 21 makes it clear that he was in charge of Sauls animals. He was a man of influenceThe scripture 22:7-10 makes it clear. Doeg an enemy of Israel, possible convert, high ranking official, zealously executes 85 of God’s priests and an entire city of innocents. Two parts of the plot- Doeg was in chp 21 when David was on the run and in chp 22 when Saul orders the massacre. Doeg agrees- destroys on command. Doeg bridges David sin and Saul SinBut is he the real culprit of this story? David is just trying to save himself- priests go down Saul? He ordered it. Jonathan? If he had given bread to David he wouldn’t have to have eaten the consecrated bread. Is it David? He lied to the priests in 21 and Doeg was there and told Saul. The easy answer is that its Doeg- He killed the priests- he’s the bad guy(Insert sermon about not Killing God’s priests here)For people who want easy formulas to live by (God is good- tragic events are bad) this story creates a dilemmaFirst- not just simply priests. They are descendants of wicked Eil and Phineas. They hold the ephod. They talk directly to God. Doegs massacre is not a random act of evil. It is the fulfillment of 1 Samuel 2:31 Behold, the days are coming that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. READ 1 Sam 2:27-36 This massacre of the priests is the fulfillment of the prophecy from the man of God. This massacre is the means by which God uses to raise up a righteous line of priestsSecondly- Doegs actions are influential to begin the demise of Saul. Saul orders it. Doeg does it. Saul failed as a shepherd, and has now failed in his leadership. Saul goes sideways after thisDoeg makes it happen. He destroys everything. Saul was supposed to destroy the Amelikites and he failed at it- so God pronounced judgement against him earlier- and now he’s doneskiThirdly- Doegs massacre signals the end of Saul. Saul rejected Samuel as priest and placed Ahijah, a descendant of Eli. The priests don’t even support Saul- They protect David- Saul turns from God, His word and has Doeg kill the very priests who could bring him back to God. This massace is a major turn in the story. Saul is completely spiritually and morally bankrupt. Yahweh has removed his protection from Saul and we will see more of his demise in future chpsIts very complex- The Priests are still of God, even tho they are under a curse. They can speak to Saul even tho they are under a curse. Doeg Kills the means of Saul redemption while being the judgement upon the priests. The Edomite- Understand this- the Edomites are from the line of Esau (Gen 36:1) not the chose line of JacobThere is an eternal cosmic conflict between Jacob and Esau and this is part of the conflict of it What do we do with this story? Is God the author of Evil? The Devil? Man? Who is the author There is real evil in the worldThere are enemies of God that are at war with God’s people until the final summation of all thingsRomans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—1 John 5:19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Pastor Evan continues in our new sermon series, "The Story of David." For five weeks we'll bring these stories to life and discover how David was a crucially human example of how we relate to God. Pastor Evan shares on the story from 1 Samuel 18-20. Jonathan and David’s relationship grew among the two most unlikely friends. Jonathan was Saul’s son and the future king. This must have been a profoundly important relationship among friends. Sometimes we underestimate the deep spiritual aspects of our friendships. We underestimate the courage and resilience we have when we are supported by good friends. David remains faithful to God, and faithful to himself. Yet, he stays strong. David had help. It was God’s help and it looked like a soul friend.
1Corinthians 10:16 This cup of blessing which we bless…the communion of the blood of ChristThe good thing about an empty cup is that it can be filled. We can have three cups and pour water over all of them. One is filled and the others are not. Why? One is turned upside down and one is filled up with so much matter that it cannot receive water. It is about being willing to receive, being emptied of what doesn’t matter, and always willing, always receiving. The supply does not stop, just our receiving, or being filled up with other matters. Ephesians 5:18 … be (being) filled with the Spirit…Acts 4:31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. Luke 11:13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”There are many doctrines concerning the Holy Spirit (The baptism, anointing, intercession). We do not need more doctrines of the Holy Spirit, we just need more of the Holy Spirit. God wants us to receive the Spiritual blessings and they have already been given.Ephesians 1:3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. Compare the blessings to Jacob and Esau. They represent to two sides of us, our Jacob self and our Esau self. They each wanted different types of blessings. Jacob felt empty until he reached out hungrily for the heavenly blessing. Esau reached out hungrily also, but for a worldly blessing. Jacob was filled and ended up walking with a limp, to remind him of his struggle to go through anything and to wrestle with everything, even God, to receive the blessing. (Isaac/Ishmael, David/Saul, Jesus/Adam.People cannot relieve the stress of the emptiness of their lives by focusing on emptiness and seeking to fill it with things to have, or things to do, or things to know, but only by having the emptiness filled up with God Himself in the fullness of His Spirit. How do we deal with evil in the world around us - can we eradicate it? No, we simply do not focus on the evil but we fill our world with the presence of God and his goodness. In a similar way, the experience of salvation is not the absence of sin in us but the presence of God. Light removes darkness. In the same way problems and difficult circumstances exist and are always with us. But they do not dominate our inner being. He does not always take our problems away but gives us the Emmanuel answer. How does this make the problems lose their power over us? They simply have to move over because we are not focussing upon them but upon a reality, the greatest reality – the Emmanuel reality. Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. We cannot have our focussed attention on the two arenas of activity at the one time. It is from the place of realized Emmanuel presence that we receive wisdom to address the problems with faith and not with fear or unbridled imagination. Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. The empty cup
Today's podcast episode is a topic we probably don’t find ourselves talking about with others because it can be a bit uncomfortable but it’s one I know we all deal with —it’s addressing our sins of jealousy and envy. It just seems no matter where we are in life we can always find ourselves sinfully comparing ourselves to others. I would think at my age and life stage this would be over, but sadly it's not. How often do I find myself in my head comparing the circumstances of my life to others – too many! Even though it may be just in my head, it's still a sin, and it may seem subtle, but it's not – all sin is an offense against God and one we must continue to do battle with. When we find ourselves dealing with jealousy comparing ourselves to others or envious of others, it's like we're saying to God that we're not satisfied with what He's given us. “If we are to successfully combat the temptations to envy and jealousy, we must mentally bring God into the picture. We must remind ourselves that He determines not only what abilities we have but also the degree of those abilities and the blessing He will bestow on their use.” ~ Jerry Bridges, Respectable Sins Show Notes: Jerry Bridges, in Respectable Sins, a book I most highly recommended you read, describes jealousy of “intolerance of rivalry.” He shares there are legitimate times to express jealousy, like when someone is trying to win your spouse away from you. Our God declares Himself to be a jealous God (Exodus 20:5). Our jealousy becomes sinful when we become afraid someone is going to be more successful or honored over us. King Saul's jealousy over David (Saul has struck down his thousands and David his ten thousand – 1 Samuel 18:7) is an example of Saul's jealousy over David because honor was given to David and not him. At that moment he saw him as a rival and jealousy took root. Envy is defined by Jerry Bridges as: “the painful and oftentimes resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by someone else. Sometimes we want that same advantage, leading to the further sin of covetousness. And sometimes we resent the other person having something we don't have. But we don't just envy people in general. Usually, there are two conditions that tempt us to envy. First, we tend to envy those with whom we most closely identify. Second, we tend to envy in them the areas we value most.” Scriptures & Resources: Exodus 20:5 1 Samuel 18:7 Romans 1:29-33 Galatians 5:19-21 Psalm 103:10 Philippians 4:12 Hebrews 13:5 Romans12:2 Romans 12:5 Romans 12:10 Philippians 4:11-12 Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges Messy Beautiful Friendship: Finding and Nurturing Deep and Lasting Relationships by Christine Hoover Visit ThankfulHomemaker.com for the complete show notes.
