Until about 6-7 years ago A.J. Hegg had little idea what the acronyms CDI or UM were, much less what they did or how they helped hospitals. Today the Essentia Health hospitalist is leading a new physician advisor program and making a big impact on his organization. Both from a quality and financial perspective, but also on the personal lives of a diverse team of physician advisors who have managed to incorporate life balance into their work. Listen in as we cover: Hegg's origin story into CDI, fueled (or perhaps pushed) by director Tracy Boldt His role today—CDI vs. medicine, and division of responsibilities Essentia Health's physician advisor program—services covered, scope of work, and core responsibilities including UM and CDI simultaneously Bringing back old-school CDI as it was once practiced (and still is in some corners)—at the elbow clarifications, conversations, provider education. And how it all meshes with Essentia's existing CDI team. Metrics, assistive technologies, and high-level dashboard Who the team is and how it functions—shift work and task based, structured for work-life balance and an emphasis on positive culture Obtaining organizational buy-in and high-level ROI A favorite hazy memory from the Encore casino in Boston, September 2021 ACDIS physician advisor exchange...
The massive Columbia River travels more than 1,200 miles from start to finish. It crosses four mountain ranges, powers 14 hydroelectric dams and irrigates hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland, among other feats. But its origins start humbly: in a gentle lake in the mountains of British Columbia. Cascade PBS's resident historian Knute Berger journeyed to these headwaters for a recent episode of the Mossback's Northwest video series, but there's far more left to explore. In this episode of Mossback, Berger joins co-host Stephen Hegg to share what it was like to make the trek to that peaceful lake in Canada where it all begins. Berger and Hegg also discuss the fur trade that kicked off an early-19th century era of exploration along the Columbia; the Welsh-Canadian explorer and cartographer known for navigating and mapping the entire river from start to finish; and the existential threat that climate change poses to the ice and snow that feed the river and its watershed. This is the last episode of the season! Thanks so much for listening. We'll be back next season with more. In the meantime, check out the new Mossback's Northwest Special. It's a 30-minute deep dive on the Columbia River, streaming now on Cascade PBS and at CascadePBS.org. For more on all things Mossback, visit CascadePBS.org.
Adelaide Lowry Pollock was an educator, birder, author and believer in the power of civic participation at the turn of the 20th century. In the early 1900s, pioneering educator Adelaide Lowry Pollock was the first woman to be named principal of a Seattle grade school. A lifelong love of birds dominated her curriculum. Her students went on birding field trips, mapped birds' nests, researched bird behaviors, learned bird songs and even built elaborate birdhouses. Ultimately, though, Pollock was interested in more than just the birds themselves. For her, studying birds was a way to encourage both environmental preservation and civic participation. Cascade PBS's resident historian Knute Berger profiled Pollock and her legacy in a recent episode of the Mossback's Northwest video series, but there's more left to explore. In this episode of Mossback, Berger joins co-host Stephen Hegg to discuss how the seed for this story was planted by a single photograph; what those bird-centered classroom activities entailed; what the study of birds truly meant to Pollock; and the chapter of her life following her time in Seattle's schools, which included teaching citizenship classes for soldiers overseas and attempting to improve the lives of both retired teachers and juvenile offenders. Plus, Berger and Hegg take a field trip to Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Queen Anne, one of the places Pollock's students studied birds, to imagine what the place would have been like in Pollock's day and do a little birdwatching themselves. Minoru Yamasaki was among the most influential architects of the 20th century. Knute Berger tells the story. Minoru Yamasaki was born in Seattle in 1912, studied architecture at the University of Washington and went on to design some of the most celebrated buildings of the 20th century. Among them: the World Trade Center in New York and the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. Yamasaki aimed to do something that few were doing at the time. He subverted the bare, minimalist and sometimes brutalist trends of mid-century modern buildings with fine details that evoked elegance and beauty. Cascade PBS's resident historian Knute Berger explored Yamasaki's career and legacy in a recent episode of the Mossback's Northwest video series, but there's much more left to discuss. In this episode of Mossback, co-host Stephen Hegg joins Berger to hear more about Yamasaki's early life experiences and how they influenced his work; his approach to architecture and how it differed from the prevailing cultural winds of the time; and the process of creating his most acclaimed buildings and the blistering critiques they sometimes received. Plus, Berger and Hegg take a field trip to Rainier Tower, a striking Seattle skyscraper and one of Yamasaki's most controversial designs. For more on all things Mossback, visit CascadePBS.org. Join our hosts on the wee Scottish Isle of Hegg (or, rather, the Isle of Mann, masquerading as Scotland if we are being honest about our filming locations) as they review Chelsea's pick: The Decoy Bride. Madison is baffled, yet delighted, at Chelsea's appreciation of the movie and both uncover the real reason why this movie works so well: David Tennant. Sure, the dialogue is witty and the accents and scenery are great, but the cast of the movie is really what elevates it to a height like that of the Hebridean cliffside. While we adored Kelly MacDonald's accent, can we please start letting David Tennant use his Scottish accent? For science? Either way, this movie is definitely worth the watch (and for what it's worth-- this is Madison's favorite episode this season). The North Cascades' bear population thrived in the 19th century, but now almost none are left. Advocates are working to bring them back. The iconic grizzly bear once roamed the North Cascades. Grizzly bones have also been found as far west as Whidbey Island. Today, however, there are almost no grizzlies left in Washington state. Some government agencies have started the process of potentially reintroducing the bears to the region, given their history as a key part of the ecosystem. This idea, however, isn't without controversy. Crosscut's resident historian Knute Berger dug into this history and controversy in a recent episode of the Mossback's Northwest video series, but there's more left to explore. In this episode of Mossback, Berger joins co-host Stephen Hegg to ask what evidence we have of grizzlies in Washington's historical record, why the bears have mostly disappeared and why some want to bring them back. Plus, Berger and Hegg offer some sound advice on bear etiquette. For more on all things Mossback, visit crosscut.com/mossback. Decades after the Civil War, southern sympathizers sought to rewrite history. Knute Berger explains how those efforts were received in the Northwest. When Gone With the Wind premiered in Seattle in 1940, it was an event. Moviegoers who ventured Downtown to attend a showing of the Civil War drama were met with fanfare. The street outside The 5th Avenue Theatre, where the film was playing, was decorated as if for a Fourth of July parade, with one notable exception: the presence of Confederate flags. These flags could be seen in brief footage of Downtown that was featured in an earlier episode of the Mossback's Northwest video series about the Seattle Freeze. And while the production team didn't notice, viewers did. In a recent episode of Mossback's Northwest, Knute Berger and producer Stephen Hegg discuss the feedback and the historical investigation that followed. But there is still more to the story. For this episode of the Mossback podcast, both Berger and Hegg discuss changing attitudes toward the Confederacy and toward race in Seattle as our city's Southern sympathizers attempted to rewrite the narrative of the Civil War. Before listening, we suggest you watch the Mossback's Northwest episode about the Confederacy in the Northwest here. --- Credits Hosts: Stephen Hegg, Knute Berger Producer: Seth Halleran Executive producer: Mark Baumgarten

Jan 24, 2020 From Sean @ Kingdom In Context This informal debate covers the nature of the Father and Son as it pertains to a Trinitarian view, and how does the Messiah save us according to His Father's Torah? Our goal at Kingdom In Context is to encourage our audience to look for context in the passages they are told teach specific doctrines, and the Trinity doctrine is a prime example as it is filled with Scripture taken out of context, poorly defined terms, and subjective semantics. I've decided to help the viewer be more aware of when the conversation derailed from Scripture in this video with some visual assistants. We MUST hold our brethren and "teachers" who promote authoritative doctrines, that have caused so much division and confusion in the body of believers, to the objective standard of Scripture in context. "I think I'm in a perpetual career transition" Restaurant Manager turned Career Coach turned Entrepreneur, Chris Hegg, from @ChrisatPeak joins Cassie on Happenstance to talk about making big career moves, the chaos and challenges behind career transitions and how he has developed a deep dense of confidence when it comes to follow his passions and taking advantage of opportunities. Let's see where happenstance takes us...Episode Topics:- Daily POP (00:02:40)- Guest Introduction (00:07:18)- Making a Mid-Career Change (0025:49)- 10 Years in the Restaurant Industry (00:32:08)- The Start of a 4 Year Career Change (00:37:55)- Making Your Own Career Transition (00:42:46)- The Transition to Entrepreneurship and Reselling (00:44:37)-A Story on Looking Out for Yourself (00:56:46) Guest Bio:Chris Hegg is a solopreneur, career coach, content creator, reseller, and curriculum developer who is dedicated to being a catalyst for thoughtful career change. Chris began his career managing restaurants before launching his first big career transition at the age of 30. The “what everyone sees” version of this story is that Chris went back to grad school and became a Career Coach. This sounds like he took one giant step, and voila, transition complete. No! The “real” story of this transition involved dozens of small steps (and mis-steps), all during the Great Recession of 2008. This includes quitting a perfectly fine job, arranging countless coffee meetings, volunteering in the community, working a half dozen part-time jobs, paying off a mountain of debt, selling a car to fund tuition, and moving 900 miles south to attend graduate school. For Chris, the real magic in that change was taking small steps, lots of them. After earning a Master of Arts in College Student Development, Chris worked as a Career Coach at universities and career schools. He soon established his first business, Peak Opportunity Coaching. During his 10+ years of experience in career education, Chris has taken part in tens of thousands of conversations about work, life, passion, money and change. He has drawn inspiration from the brave career changes of his clients, and how the modern world presents so many new avenues to explore and carry out career change. Cue big career transition number 2. While working full-time as a Career Coach and growing his career coaching practice, Chris built a successful side-hustle selling used clothing on ebay (insert a bunch of small steps that nobody sees here). This side hustle grew quickly and he stepped aside from career coaching to focus on his growing used clothing business, Peak Opportunity Outfitters. Chris then started a new side-hustle too. Under the name @ChrisAtPeak, Chris shares candid videos of his entrepreneurship journey, especially the small steps. He shares this content to inspire and encourage others to pursue their own side-hustles, and to roll those side-hustles into big, brave career moves.

Today's episode is about movies that deserve a second chance. We've all seen movies that we don't enjoy and will likely never watch again. But, sometimes we get a second chance to see a movie, and for whatever reason, it was better this time around. What about movies that we enjoy, but no one else seems to? Can you think of a movie that got mixed or bad reviews and you didn't understand why? For today's episode, we each chose a movie that we feel might deserve a second viewing. We could have chosen a movie we didn't like the first time around, or an unpopular movie that we enjoy. If you like our show, please consider supporting us here: https://www.patreon.com/blackcasediaries Movies Mentioned today: The Decoy Bride (2011) Starring David Tennant (Dr. Who, Broadchurch), Kelly MacDonald (Brave), and Alice Eve (Before We Go) This film takes place in Scotland on the fictional island of Hegg. Lara Tyler (Eve) and James Arbor (Tennant) are a famous couple attempting to get married in a private ceremony. Despite their best efforts, the paparazzi have followed them even to the remote island of Hegg in Scotland. Katie (MacDonald) is a local woman who agrees to pose as a decoy Lara Tyler during the ceremony. However, due to some confusion, James and Katie end up getting married by accident. Lara, trying to evade media attention, has gone into hiding as the newlyweds need to find a way to divorce. It earned a 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, 6.2/10 on IMDB, and 42% from Metacritic Cars 2 (2011) Directed by John Lasseter and Brad Lewis This was the first Pixar movie to not earn an Oscar nomination. Monsters University (2013), The Good Dinosaur (2015), and Cars 3 (2017) also fall into this category. This was also the first Pixar sequel that was not part of the Toy Story franchise Lightening McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy/Daniel Whitney) head to Europe to race in the World Grand Prix. Things go awry when Mater gets mistaken for an American spy and his focus is no longer on helping McQueen with the race. It earned a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.2/10 on IMDB A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) This Nickelodeon Studios film starred Jim Carey (The Mask) and was directed by Brad Silberling It is a loose adaptation of the book series by Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler) Thomas Newman composed the score which we linked to here. Wealthy orphans Violet, Klaus, and Sunny must navigate an unfriendly world after the sudden death of their parents. They are placed with an evil and eccentric "relative" named Count Olaf, who seeks to take their fortune. Surrounded by unhelpful adults, the children must look to each other to save themselves from danger. This movie was adapted from The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, and The Wide Window. **We were not intending to compare the movie to the TV show. Where the movie succeeded, the show did as well in almost every case. It's our opinion that the show is a fantastic adaptation that covers the source material better in many respects. Allow me to elaborate on this concept further using a quote from author Tim Hegg, one of the teachers at Congregation Beit Hallel in Tacoma, WA, as well as a significant contributor of materials for FFOZ. In his excellent work about the Apostle Paul ‘The Letter Writer’, Hegg, in the Prologue, makes this important note regarding the original languages of the Bible: One of the major difficulties we encounter in our discussion of “trust,” “believe,” and “faith/faithful,” is that there is no corresponding verbal form of “faith” in the English language. We have no way of saying that one “faithed” or that someone is “faithing” in God. Yet in both the Hebrew and the Greek the word group expressing the concept of faith also contains a verb built on the same root. To put it simply, noun and verb are cognate. For example, the Hebrew verb [‘aman], “to be supported” from which we derive the verb “to believe,” has the corresponding noun [‘emunah], which means “faith” or “faithful.” Likewise, the Greek verb [pisteuo], “to believe,” has the corresponding noun [pistis], which means “faith” or “faithful.” Unfortunately, many English readers do not realize that “believing,” “having faith,” and “being faithful” all derive from the same word group whether in the Hebrew or the Greek… This has all but been lost on our modern-day religious communities. “Faith” is considered almost exclusively to mean that one is “convinced” of this or that without regard to any outward action. Yet the very words used by the authors of Scripture indicate this was not their meaning. What both the Hebrew and the Greek word groups tell us plainly is that the internal, mental activity of genuine faith always shows itself in outward obedience: “faith” and “faithfulness” are bound together as two sides of the same coin. This division in the Western worldview of the “internal” (which is called “faith”) from the “external” (which is called “faithfulness”) is foreign to the biblical way of looking at things because it is foreign to a Hebrew understanding of “faith/faithfulness.” Since the Bible was written by Hebrews and those who had come to adopt the Hebrew way of looking at the world, it only makes sense that the biblical teaching on “faith” would flow from a Hebraic perspective. That this concept is firmly rooted in the Torah proper is paramount to understanding such writings themselves. Can we expect to find these concepts of “faith” and “trusting faithfulness” working in tandem played out in the writings of the Renewed Covenant as well? You bet! Observe (notice particularly the author’s conclusion in verse 31): 21 - "But now a righteousness from God, apart from [Torah], has been made known, to which the [Torah] and the Prophets testify. 22 - This righteousness from God comes through faith in [Yeshua the Messiah] to all who believe. There is no difference, 23 - for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 - and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by [Yeshua the Messiah]. 25 - God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- 26 - he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in [Yeshua]. 27 - Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of [legalistically] observing the [Torah]? No, but on that of faith. 28 - For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from [legalistically] observing the [Torah]. 29 - Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 - since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31 - Do we, then, nullify the [Torah] by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the [Torah]." (Romans 3:21-31, NIV)
