Toespraken die werden gegeven verspreid over enkele tientallen jaren.   Op dagen waarop het erg warm was bleek het taalgebruik in deze toespraken minder complex dan op dagen met een gemiddelde of koude temperatuur.   Het is niet voor het eerst dat er een link wordt gesuggereerd tussen hitte en verminderde cognitieve vaardigheden. Dat dit ook een impact heeft op het taalgebruik van de mensen die belangrijke beslissingen moeten maken is dan ook niet geheel verrassend, maar iets waar we misschien niet zo vaak bij stilstaan.  De onderzoekers gebruikten de data uit Duitsland om ook nog in te zoomen op leeftijd en geslacht. Bij oudere politici was het effect op taalgebruik groter dan bij jongere politici. Ook dat sluit aan bij bevindingen in andere onderzoeken.   Hoe erg is het dat taalgebruik op deze manier verandert op warme dagen? Misschien leidt het wel tot beter begrip onder het publiek. Wat een positieve bijkomstigheid zou zijn. Een minder goed functionerend brein is dan weer nadelig wanneer je belangrijke beslissingen moet maken die een effect kunnen hebben op een hele samenleving.   Maar eigenlijk geldt het natuurlijk voor ons allemaal: als onze hersenen op warme dagen minder goed functioneren, dan moeten we daar misschien wat meer rekening mee houden. Sommige beslissingen, meetings, of discussies dan toch misschien maar even uitstellen tot na een hittegolf.
