Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

St Pope Mark, 49th Pope of Alexandria (EDITED / RECORDED)On the 22nd day of the Coptic month of Baramouda we celebrate the life of St Mark, the 49th Pope of Alexandria.Mark was from Alexandria, and he was an honorable and educated man. The pope of Alexandria at the time, Pope John, ordained him a deacon for he was an eloquent speaker. His voice was sweet and all those who heard him rejoiced in him. The Pope handed him the administration of the papal place, and he did nothing without his advice. When Pope John put on him the garb of monks in the monastery, one of the elder monks shouted saying: "This deacon whose name is Mark shall, rightly and fittingly sit upon the throne of his father Mark, the Evangelist."When Pope John departed, the bishops unanimously agreed to choose Mark as the next Patriarch. He fled to the desert, but they caught up with him, brought him back, and enthroned him Patriarch on the 2nd day of Amshir, in 799 A.D..He tended to the church’s needs, and restored those that were in a ruinous state. He returned many of the heretics back to the Orthodox faith, healed many of the sick, and cast out many with devils. Telling them: "What happened to you was because you dared to partake of the Holy Mysteries with irreverence, so keep yourselves henceforward from the evil words that come out of your mouth."In his days, the Muslim Arabs conquered the Greek Isles, captured many of their women and children, brought them to Alexandria, and started to sell them. The Pope gathered money from the believers, and was able to pay three thousand Dinars to save and free them. He wrote for them bills of manumission and set them free. He provided those who wished to return to their country with whatever they needed, and those who wished to stay, he gave them in marriage and protected them. He restored the church of the Redeemer in Alexandria. But evil and possessed men came and burned it down. So Mark restored it again. When the Lord willed to give him rest, he became sick. He prayed the Divine Liturgy, partook of the Holy Mysteries, bid the bishops that were there farewell and then departed in peace. He sat on the See for 20 years, 2 months and 21 days.Lessons from this storyI think if I was to give a title to Saint Mark, 49th Pope of Alexandria, I would call him the restorer. Not just for his unwavering persistence in rebuilding the church of the Redeemer, but early on we read that he restored many to the faith. Some who had become heretics, while also restoring many back to purity.Restoration of anything requires patience and a tedious attention to detail. Many of us today have seen TV shows where a person is restoring a car, a house or an artifact back to its original glory. That is truly a patience and careful person. Sure the show’s glam over the tediousness of the tasks, as they do not want to lose their audience, showing only certain highlights until it is fully restored. But returning anything to its original glory can not be captured in a 30 minute TV show.I had an occasion to visit the vatican on a rare house tour. One of the rooms was displaying certain arts that were in various stages of restore. Paintings, sculptures, trinkets, frescos, etc. I asked the curator what the duration was, and he mused, pointing to one of the paintings “Not in my lifetime will it be finished.”St Mark spent his life restoring souls, just as the Creator gave His life to restore us back to our original glory as well.PrayerOh Father helps us always appreciate the many gifts you give us each and every day. Help us also appreciate the sacrifice you made for us and guide us when the time comes that we too may help restore someone back to you. May the prayers of St Abba Mark the Restorer, 49th Pope of Alexandria be with us all, Amen.

This is a story about the people that came before us, amongst them were two men from the Children of Israel who were partners and who are included in the meaning of this verse of The Holy Qur’an. Abu Ja‛far Ibn Jarir recorded that Furat bin Tha‛labah Al-Bahrani said concerning the verse, (Verily, I had a companion The Holy Quran Chapter 57 Verse 51). “There were two men who were partners and had collected eight thousand Dinars. One of them had a craft and the other did not. The one who had a craft said to the other, ‘You do not have a craft, so I think I will divide the money with you and leave you.’ So he left him. Then the first man bought a house, belonging to a king who had died, for the price of one thousand Dinars. He called his companion and showed him the house saying, ‘What do you think of this house I bought it for one thousand Dinars.’ He said, ‘How beautiful it is.’ When he went out he said, ‘O Allah, this companion of mine has bought this house for one thousand Dinars; I ask You for one of the houses of Paradise — and he gave one thousand Dinars in charity.’ Then as much time passed as Allah willed should pass. The first man married a woman with a dowry of one thousand Dinars, and invited his companion and made food for him. When he came, he said, ‘I have married this woman with a dowry of one thousand Dinars.’ He replied, ‘How beautiful this is.’ And when he left, he said, ‘O Lord, my companion has married a woman with a dowry of one thousand Dinars; I ask you for a wife from among houris of jannah ( beautiful fairy from paradise) — and he gave one thousand Dinars in charity. Then as much time passed as Allah willed should pass. Then the first man bought two gardens for two thousand Dinars, then he called his companion and showed them to him. He said, ‘I have bought these two gardens for two thousand Dinars.’ He replied, ‘How beautiful this is.’ When he came out, he said, ‘O Lord, my companion has bought two gardens for two thousand Dinars; I ask you for two gardens in Paradise’, and he gave two thousand Dinars in charity. Then the angel of Death came to them took their souls in death. He took the one who had given his money in charity and put him in a house that he liked. There, there was a woman who was so beautiful that the ground shinned under her, then he (the angel) took him to two gardens and gave him other things which are known only to Allah. The man said, ‘This is like a man who has such and such.’ The angel said, ‘That is exactly what it is; this house, these gardens and this wife are all for you.’ The man said, ‘I had a companion who used to say: Are you among those who believe?’ It was said to him, ‘He is in Hell.’ He said, ‘Will you look down’ So he looked down and saw him in the midst of Hell. At this, he said: (By Allah! You have nearly ruined me. Had it not been for the grace of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought forth (to Hell))” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jannah-firdaus-mediapro/message

Uh-oh, this is a week of contrary opinions on XENA: WARRIOR PODCAST. Vera, Katie, and Livy wax poetical over the improbable gem, 1x13 “Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards,” which despite being a clip show -- that much loathed episode format usually considered a waste of valuable tv plotting space -- actually breaks a ton of new ground! We talk about Gabrielle’s surprising choice to leave Xena behind, the utopian ultra-supportive artists’ collective she establishes with her many charming BFsOTW, and the imaginative editing techniques this episode uses to depict the bards’ different storytelling styles. Then we go against the fandom grain in 1x14, “A Fistful of Dinars,” and give this seemingly well-liked episode a big thumbs down. We puzzle over why Petracles’s hair is the way it is, why the gods created ambrosia in the first place, and why this episode is named after a spaghetti western when it’s more of an Indiana Jones serial?? Just...so many why’s.   The power, the passion, the podcast!   iTunes: http://apple.co/2f0NAIM Twitter: @xenawarriorpod Tumblr: xenawarriorpodcast.tumblr.com Facebook: facebook.com/xenawarriorpodcast ———————————————————————— Vera: (@hollywoodgrrl) Katie: (@katetocci) Livy: (@PonderousLivy) Music: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/A_Hawk_and_a_Hacksaw/

Nobody doubts that the US has a responsibility to rebuild Iraq, but US taxpayers are paying six times more than Iraqis, while Iraq banks draw new wealth from rising oil prices. Also, NATO scolds Russia while pledging to help Georgia rebuild, and the Summer Olympics -- beyond Michael Phelps.

Because we spend approximately a fourth of our lifetime eating, Miles and Cara consume baklava and a veggie curry sampler with names ridiculously impossible to pronounce at Ziggurat on the corner of Tigris and Euphrates streets in Makati. We are so not kidding! We don't know if they named the restaurant Ziggurat because of it's location, or if they renamed the streets so that the restaurant would be "cradled", or if they built the streets around the restaurant. This is the Philippines after all. Your money (especially OPEC currencies like Dinars) will do miracles of religious proportions. While a Malaysian TV crew films a travel special at Ziggurat , Miles and Cara contribute to the challenges of the TV sound guy by talking and laughing really loud, and interviewing one of the Malaysian guys approximately two feet away from the camera crew. Ozzry (above), is from Malaysia who goes to uni in Sydney. He's on holiday and seems to be enjoying the touristy fare of Embassy and Prince of Jaipur. Nothing much is known about Ozzry except that this is not the real spelling of his name, he's painfully cute, and that he likes to photograph things. We assume he doesn't have much friends because he's not used to shout outs. Or, he's so highly educated and wealthy that he has his scribe write his greetings on parchment and has these sent via homing pigeons. We're kidding and you're a good sport, Oz. Miles uses big words he could barely handle like prevalent and partake, and fails miserably in using the word aerodynamic. Cara is so enthused by the Med dessert called Baklava. You know why. "The Nana Song" is another original by Miles, and can be downloaded at www.myspace.com/milessanchez
