Maff takes us a little further back in our time machine to 1963 this week! But despite hitting the cinemas then, it's later on when it really becomes a cult classic and a favorite for many on tv. It's Jason and the Argonauts, the mythological fantasy adventure film distributed by Columbia Pictures. Directed by Don Chaffey and starring Todd Armstrong, Nancy Kovack, Honor Blackman, and Gary Raymond. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: Jason has been prophesied to take the throne of Thessaly. When he saves Pelias from drowning, but does not recognize him as the man who had earlier killed his father, Pelias tells Jason to travel to Colchis to find the Golden Fleece. Jason follows his advice and assembles a sailing crew of the finest men in Greece, including Hercules. They are under the protection of Hera, queen of the gods. Their voyage is replete with battles against harpies, a giant bronze Talos, a hydra, and an animated skeleton army, all brought to life by the special effects wizardry of Ray Harryhausen. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thevhsstrikesback/support
This week the team takes a dive into film history and analyzes the groundbreaking mythology film Jason and the Argonuats (1963) directed by Don Chaffey and adapted from the Argonautica. While only getting a little distracted by Ava's Marvel watch through, the team takes a look at how visual effects are changed, how the restrictions that morality codes enforced changed the mythology, and talk about why does Hera's head look like that? Tom Hanks once said that Jason And The Argonauts was the greatest film ever made. But was he right? I mean, yeah, probably. Directed by Don Chaffey, starring Todd Armstrong and Honor Blackman, and featuring an original score by the fantastic Bernard Herrmann, Jason And The Argonauts is perhaps better known as a showcase of the legendary Ray Harryhausen's visual effects, but even aside from those it's got a pace and a feel that's worth catching. Also, it's free on the web archives, so that's a plus! Float along with the manatees as they gush over mid-century claymation, discuss responsible provisioning plans, and demonstrate a consistent and profound lack of Greek myth expertise. On this week's episode we talk about Don Chaffey's 'Jason and the Argonauts'! This film boasts some truly groundbreaking visual effects work from none other than the legend himself: Ray Harryhausen. Is Harryhausen's involvement enough to solidify this film as a classic?

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. The imagination? Whether it be George Lucas, Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert E. Howard, or L. Ron Hubbard, legends are made when their "seed" of an idea blossoms into tales about Conan or Sherlock Holmes. Ray Harryhausen was another such legend. Starting with monsters from outer space to fantasy mythos of Europe and Asia, Ray Harryhausen brought to life some of the greatest and intense creatures in movie history. His brilliant stop motion animation was the place many genre fans got their first glimpse of the "fantastic". Last year, Dark Discussions did a poll on social media asking listeners to choose a film to review based on your co-hosts suggestions. Co-host Abe listed Jason and the Argonauts as a possibility and not surprisingly, the movie won the poll. With this new episode, we go into the film, some background about Ray Harryhausen, and our own experiences with his work. The movie came out in 1963 to critical acclaim. Directed by Don Chaffey, co-written by playwright Alan Beverley Cross, and scored by Bernard Herrmann, it continues to delight audiences new and old alike. Yet this is only the tip of Ray Harryhausen's filmography. Is it a great place to start? Dark Discussions gives their opinions and what they think. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
A szezon első blokkjában három olyan filmet nézünk meg, amelyeknek a feldolgozása idén került a mozikba. 2016-os remake-blokkunkat az 1977-es Pete's Dragon (Peti és a sárkány) című Disney-filmmel nyitjuk, amelyből David Lowery forgatott új változatot, magyarul Elliot, a sárkány címmel. Mikor van létjogosultsága egy remake-nek? Mit akart mondani a Pete's Dragonnel 1977-ben Don Chaffey, és mit akar mondani vele 2016-ban David Lowery? Hogyan írj a főhősödnek természetfeletti legjobb barát karaktert? Melyik animált sárkány sikerült jobban, a '77-es kézzel rajzolt Süsü-Elliot, vagy a '16-os digitális Kutya-Elliot? A Vakfolt podcast első musicalje kapcsán rögtön elszörnyedünk a vidám dalocskák szövegében megbújó borzalmakon, felrajzoljuk a Disney-hullámformát, amit a stúdió legsikeresebb filmjei generálnak, elmélkedünk egy sort azon, mi tesz jót egy alapvetően gyerekeknek készült történetnek, és vitatkozunk arról, hogy árthat-e egy remake-nek, ha a végletekig lecsupaszítja az eredeti sztori premisszáját. Nyugi, dalra egyikünk sem fakad. Don Chaffey). Don’t worry, folks – none of the boys wore a fur bikini while talking about this caveman epic. Download […]
