Today's Headlines: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed four bills into law that restrict LGBTQ rights. The bills include expanding the Don't Say Gay law, banning transition-related care for minors, prohibiting trans people from using public facilities aligned with their gender identities, and restricting "adult" performances in front of minors. However, Democrats are calling for an investigation into DeSantis's use of Florida's law enforcement agency. In this post, our second in a series, Tracy Rigdon was joined by special guest, the talented writer and journalist, Stephen Dare, who is also a consultant to the campaign to elect Democratic candidate for Mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, Donna Deegan. They discussed the challenges that small businesses face in Northeast Florida. Dare talks about how it has been 20 years since either the Republican or Democrat candidate reached out to young business owners in the area. He notes that there are too many regulations and red tape, making it difficult to open a small business. They mention the change of use requirement, which mandates that a private engineer certify older buildings, costing business owners upwards of about $10,000. Dare is in favor of the idea of creating more business improvement districts. They talk about how such a district could help small businesses in the community by providing them with a funding source that they could use for entertainment, repainting the streets, or adding trees. The district would also provide support and membership groups to small businesses without the need for the city's support. Dare believes that small businesses are the backbone of the economy, as does Candidate Donna Deegan, and need more support from the city. They also talk about how cleaning up small businesses would improve the community by creating walkable neighborhoods with thriving little areas and pockets of town. They discuss how this concept has worked in other neighborhoods, such as San Marco, and how it could work in other areas that have empty buildings. Overall, they believe that the idea of creating a business improvement district could be a useful tool for helping small businesses in the community thrive. Dare talks about the importance of planning and zoning in cities and mentions that a portion of the units developed in a city, such as Jacksonville, should be workforce housing. He suggests breaking up the idea of segregating the poor and the wealthy and building affordable housing units along with luxury housing to create a safe environment for everyone. Dare mentions that the current plan of building in floodplains is not viable, and the city should instead invest in building things now that will benefit the city in the future. Rigdon agrees with Dare's vision and adds that Donna Deegan has future vision and wants to leave each part of what she does in a better place than she found it. The conversation then moves to the topic of creating tech hubs in the city, with the recent news of a 500 million dollar pot of money from the feds. Dare talks about the Robotics Place and mentions that Jacksonville has a spaceport that the city has ignored for 25 years, which could be an excellent opportunity to attract someone like Elon Musk. Rigdon suggests that the Cecil Commerce Center is a perfect place to set up high-tech businesses. ** For the full episode, please visit our website: https://bit.ly/DonnaForMayor ** Music Tracks for this Podcast by Alex Grohl on Pixabay ** Feel free to LIKE, SHARE AND COMMENT. Joining me on this episode is local writer, journalist, entrepreneur and consultant, Stephen Dare' "The current political climate and Jacksonville Mayoral Race – Stephen Dare – Season 4 – Episode 6" Stephen Dare is a writer, restauranteur, chef, arts and civic advocate with a background in urban development, planning, neighborhood revitalization and pure old fashioned Southern gossip. Post available here. Here is just some of our conversation: Tracy Rigdon: “Duval County is going through several elections coming up, not only the mayoral, you know, but there is also some city council seats left to be filled. But right off the bat, Before we, I wanted to talk about the mayoral candidates, Davis and Deegan. And I thought that our listeners here should know right off the bat too, that you yourself are actively involved in the Donna Deegan for Mayor campaign. Is that correct?” Stephen Dare: “Oh, absolutely and proudly.” Tracy Rigdon: “… I have indeed run into people on the street and people that I know in Clay County, which is really a red county for sure. Register Republicans that always vote party lines. They're even saying that they believe in their hearts that Donna is the best pick for the job for Duval County.” Stephen Dare: “Yeah, well, I mean, you know, I'm going to give you my objective opinion objective from my point of view, right?” “So I've known Dan Davis for 20 years, actually, 23 years now.” … “But, you know. And just looking at the candidates, he doesn't have the intellectual curiosity that's necessary to run a city like Jacksonville at an inflection point. And make no doubt about it. The country, the state, the city, all of them are at inflection points. And you know, for me, I originally backed Matt Carlucci, who is also a very old friend and someone I love and admire and respect.” “…She got breast cancer three times, as most people know. And the third time, I don't think that she felt like she was gonna survive it. Like she slept with death every night and death was her expectation. And for whatever reason, um, and be the miracle of, you know, medicine and like being healthy underneath. She survived that and it was a crucible for her. Um, like it kind of changed what she was willing to put up with things that she was not willing to waste her time on anymore.” "I've rarely given interviews this past year, but Tracy Rigdon at https://www.facebook.com/TheContrastProjectJax is one of those opportunities to just have an intelligent conversation with a guy who knows what the hell he is doing.I was avoiding the small free range Chiweenie herd and their absolutely invariable habits of howling in four part disharmony whenever I start speaking to pieces of plastic, so I went to the 2nd & Charles to have the chat, not realizing that they would close less than an hour later.Anyways, Check it out. I think I drop a couple of F Bombs, and probably talk to much about the behind the scenes gossip and personalities, but im a southerner raised in a Baptist church. If I cant legitimately gossip and tell tales out of school, then I don't know what this world is coming to." RUN Donna Marathon Weekend starts off on Friday with the Social Shakeout Run. It is an opportunity to meet two of the founders of this race, Jeff Galloway and Donna Deegan. It is a nice and easy 5K through part of the Jacksonville Beach neighborhoods that will host the half marathon, full marathon, and ultra races during the weekend. There are so many people we met who have supported The DONNA Foundation in their mission to find a cure through breast cancer research and support those fighting the disease and their families. It is the kind of event that sets the tone for the weekend, as we say every year. It was even better experiencing it with two members of our Runcation Nation, Josh and Dawn. Thank you for making the start to the weekend so much fun. EAT We were with our crew at Reve Brewing. It is the home of some unique brews and Bones Pizza. We had appetizers, pizzas, and desserts that were so flavorful. The House Bread with pesto sauce was a great starter. The Caesar salad was yummy as well.Their pizzas are so flavorful. We had one with fig, proscuitto, and balsamic glaze. There were so many with the perfect combination of flavors. We would come back again to try more of their unique creations. DRINK Reve Brewing has hazy, sour, and imperial beer. Plus all things slushees with beer. We had to try a few selections. Their flavors are true to the styles they are drawn to create. There are shorter pours to try, rather than flights, so you can have just enough of what you want to try. Their taproom is unique and inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Stop by if you are in the Jacksonville area. THAT'S A WRAP! Thank you for listening! We are looking forward to YEAR NUMBER 5 of the podcast because of all your support! Experiences You Should Have Podcast Show Notes: The Donna Marathon – Breast Cancer Marathon I had the opportunity to interview Dana and Aimee from the Run Eat Drink Podcast at the largest podcast conference in the world, Podcast Movement. They travel to races all over and when I turned to them and asked them that one race that you should experience, they both responded with the same answer: DONNA Marathon. What is the DONNA Marathon and Why Should You Experience it? It’s a race that happens every year near Jacksonville, Florida to help support breast cancer research, survivors and those affected by breast cancer. This is a race for everyone. You don’t need to be an expert runner to participate. This is a special race that the entire community comes together to support and you don’t have to run a marathon to be a part of it. There are many shorter races and you don’t have to run them either. This event is a true community. This race is for survivors, someone fighting breast cancer, and for family and friends of a survivor or someone who may have passed from breast cancer, or for anyone who wants to come out and support the cause. It’s a very special event where it’s much more than a race. The Community The neighborhoods decorate their houses with pink and white balloons. People will pass out mimosas, blueberry muffins, coffee, treats, and the entire community comes together. You are adopted by the community while you are there for the event. Many people will stay in front of their houses until the last runner passes by. Honor Your Family and Loved Ones I interviewed Dana and Aimee above (press the play button at the top to hear the full interview) and they did a great job of painting the experience. Partway through the interview, Dana shared that he lost his mom to breast cancer. That moment still tugs on my heart as I imagine them being at the DONNA surrounded by others who may have been in similar situations and coming together as a community and to walk/race in memory and support of their loved ones. DONNA Marathon History Their coach, Jeff Galloway (former Olympian) helped found this race with Donna Deegan (who this race is named after) because they wanted to help families lower their stress who are dealing with breast cancer. They wanted healing to be the primary focus. It’s an official event of The DONNA Foundation which gives financial assistance and support to those dealing with breast cancer. They also help fund breast cancer research. This was year number 13 for the race, and they do an amazing job of putting it together and building the community. The race is sponsored by the Mayo Clinic, which is located in Jacksonville and is a massive contributor to breast cancer research and treatment. Many employees run in the race, help support it, pass out food, and they truly embrace the DONNA. Also shout out to Andi Sharp who is a doctor for the Mayo Clinic, breast cancer survivor and was the fastest woman at the course in 2019. If you want to help support the DONNA foundation, check out the donate button below where you can give to this incredible giving and caring foundation. Donate to the Donna Foundation When and Where is the DONNA Marathon? It starts and finishes at Neptune Beach just 12 miles east of downtown Jacksonville at Beaches Town Center. The next race is February 7-9, 2020. Friday is a Social Shakeout and 5K to get to know the other racers. Saturday is the 5K and they start the Ultra then as well, while Sunday is the half marathon and marathon. It’s always the 2nd weekend in February. Race Lengths at the DONNA Marathon 5K Half Marathon Marathon Half Marathon Relay Ultramarathon Skills Needed to Participate It doesn’t matter what athletic ability you have, you can participate. But if you are a hardcore racer, this is a Boston qualifying course. But if you’re more like me and you’re not a runner, you can walk it.
This week's episode starts a series featuring one of our favorite race weekends, the 2019 Donna Marathon Weekend! RUN The 2019 Donna Marathon Weekend started with a Social Shakeout Run on Friday. It was a 5k to get us going for the fun weekend of running ahead. I love that this weekend gets kicked off by an easy run where you can meet some great people you'll be running on the same course with during the races like Donna Deegan, the Chief Eternal Optimist and founder herself, Olympian and America's Coach, Jeff Galloway, Dr. Edith Perez of the Mayo Clinic, and Dr. Andi Sharp of the Bouncy HuntERs, an organization that raises money for The Donna Foundation. The course for this fun run is also a preview of a latter part of the half marathon as well. It means so much when we encounter them on the course during the 5k and the half later in the weekend, having heard their stories of strength, survival, and supporting others. EAT The Mini Bar... when you hear that you might think of a hotel mini bar, but in this case, it is made from scratch donuts and creative coffee. It is right next door to Southern Swells Brewing and the perfect breakfast food to refuel after a run. The place has a fun takeout counter that is designed to look like a Volkswagen van. And did I mention the mini doughnuts that take you back to childhood? Tasty flavors based on favorite childhood cereals and desserts make up their menu and cereal lattes to comfort you like staying in and watching Saturday morning cartoons on a chilly day. (It was a little cold on race morning!) DRINK We had to celebrate the start of our great weekend of running to support a great cause with a tasty beverage, of course! So we headed to Southern Swells Brewing. We had a chance to chat with owner Corey Adams about a flight of their original beers. They are focused on citrusy New England IPAs, stouts, and sours. Normally, we don't select these types of beers from a menu, but Corey really set us up with selections that gave us the inspiration to give those types of beer a first glance the next time we look at a beer menu. He gave us a nice education about the different kinds of hops that can used to create IPAs and thus create different flavors than you would typically expect. Thank you, Corey!
