Today on the show we are talking about American fashion, specifically Empresses of Seventh Avenue: World War II, New York City, and the Birth of American Fashion, the brand-new book from Nancy MacDonell, out August 27. Prior to World War II, American designers were nothing short of second-class citizens to the French. But, after the Nazis invaded Paris during the war, everything changed for French fashion, and by the time the war ended in 1945, the American look was in fashion. What is the American look, you ask? Nancy answers that for us today, as well as introduces us to a fascinating cast of characters who helped birth American fashion: Elizabeth Hawes, Eleanor Lambert, and Claire McCardell, for starters. Soon, American fashion began to beat the French at their own game, and this is all a leadup to the Battle of Versailles, which we interviewed Robin Givhan about on the show last year. American fashion is thriving now—at $500 billion, it's the largest fashion industry in the world—but there would likely be no Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Tory Burch, Halston, or Michael Kors without the Empresses of Seventh Avenue. These women have largely been forgotten to history—that is, until Nancy MacDonnell came along. Nancy is a fashion journalist and fashion historian that writes The Wall Street Journal column “Fashion with a Past,” which explores the historic roots of current fashion trends. Nancy has written everywhere from The New York Times to Elle, Vogue, and many other publications, and she's written five books, including The Classic Ten: The True Story of the Little Black Dress and Nine Other Fashion Favorites. In addition to her work as a writer, Nancy is also an adjunct lecturer in fashion history at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Let's take a listen to what she has to say.
Introduction: Time: 0.10- 1.54 मई. We will talk about everything Met Gala. Body: Time : 1.45 - 8.26 नमस्कार,अदब सत्श्रीअकाल मैं हूँ Sahiba Khan और आप सुन रहे आपका favourite podcast - FYI यानी कि For Your Information. उसी का सीक्वल है इस साल का थीम - In America: An Anthology of Fashion, or “Gilded Glamour” Met Gala में people go all out. Well, दरअसल नहीं। MET Gala. Majowe wydarzenie przyciąga miliony osób na całym świecie. Dlaczego?

To promote this weekend's Austin Film Festival release of the new movie Time Now, we spoke with lead actress Eleanor Lambert and filmmaker and director Spencer King. Eleanor is the daughter of Diane Lane, so we touched on her a tiny bit but mostly we dig into her acting experience and what bits on set and in this film were new experiences for her. Spencer, meanwhile, walks us through the creative process of Time Now and his other projects, and we discussed his life in Detroit and the projects he bases there, including his documentary debut of a late local musician. It's a great time, and if you dig what they have to say, you'll definitely want to check out Time Now when it hits VOD on the 26th!

New York Fashion Week has ended, and the baton has been passed to Milan, London and Paris. With a shortened schedule, and a move largely to digital platforms, New York Fashion Week hardly resembles fashion weeks of the past. And like everything else in the industry, change already happening around fashion show presentations was precipitated by the pandemic. Ever since the birth of haute couture, developed and codified by Charles Frederick Worth in the late 1800s, VIP customers would be invited to see next season’s collection and place their orders. Select press attaches were also invited, as a way to garner interest in the collection once it became more widely available to the public. This worked well in a small centralized country like France but became unwieldy for couturiers in the United States. Thus, Fashion Week was devised by Eleanor Lambert as a weeklong event in New York City, that customers and press could all participate in twice a year. This concentrated event was such a success that it was soon copied in France, as the perfect way to extend their reach to customers and press in other countries. Soon, the tradition spread to Italy, England and beyond. Fashion weeks also correlated with buying seasons, providing the perfect opportunity for store buyers to choose the looks that would end up in their stores six months later. This also provided a safeguard to designers, as it gave them a chance to test their styles in the market before going into full production. Fast forward to today, and fashion week is now primarily a consumer-focused event, largely due to social media and the ability to share information instantaneously, direct to the general public, an audience that is not even invited to attend the physical shows! This means that the press can no longer time their coverage to the season, which essentially puts the system completely out of balance. What’s more, buyers are much more likely to be working one-on-one with brands to develop exclusive styles for their stores, long before fashion week, which means that buyers are primarily showing up to support what they’ve already bought. On top of this, as customers become more value-based in how they shop, brands have to contend with issues of sustainability and transparency. Holding big expensive shows with celebrities feels out of touch. Many brands have been toying with solutions to these problems in an effort to rebalance the system, including “see now, buy now” collections to combat fast fashion copies, livestream shows on Pinterest and Twitch to alleviate travel, and augmented reality shows with avatar models to alleviate costs. But these solutions have never really fully taken root or upended the system. But now that has all changed, in a time where physical gatherings are difficult at best, and digital is leading the way. And so, the Spring 2021 shows held this September have largely been used as tests by brands searching for the best way to engage buyers, press and customers. It’s forcing them to think much more individually, while still considering the benefit of scale that a bi-annual fashion event provides. When the fall shows come around in February, we’re likely to see a much more hybrid approach to fashion week with brands approaching their presentations more personally and confidently...no matter if the pandemic persists. fashionconsort.com @fashionconsortagency Learn more about your ad choices. DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR TIPS FROM THE GURU OF FRUGAL MARKETING AND PROMOTION! Carolyn Howard-Johnson, is best known as The Frugal Book Promoter, but she is also a literary writer, poet, and all round smart and giving marketer. As a college freshman, she was the youngest person ever hired as a staff writer for the Salt Lake Tribune—"A Great Pulitzer Prize Winning Newspaper"—where she wrote features for the society page and a column under the name Debra Paige. Later, in New York, she was an editorial assistant at Good Housekeeping Magazine. and also handled accounts for famous fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert who developed the first "10 Best Dressed List." It was her fun job to write releases for celebrity designers of the time including Pauline Trigere, Rudy Gernreich, and Christian Dior. She was given the Woman of the Year in Arts and Entertainment Award by California Legislature members, Carol Liu, Dario Frommer, and Jack Scott and says she is really proud of that. In its first edition, "The Frugal Book Promoter" became an instant best seller as an e-book on ebookad.com and the paperback opened to rave reviews on Amazon. It is now in its second edition, expanded and updated. It became the first in the How To Do It Frugally series. "The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success" was the next. The Book Publicists of Southern California honored her with their Irwin Award and the "Pasadena Weekly" for literary activism.
"I like to dress Americans, they have faith, figures and francs" (Charles-Frederick Worth, 1895).
